It has been 1.5 yrs since I had my hair cut in a salon. Since then I've been whacking a half inch or so off about every 3 months, but I have been unable to adequately trim the very long layers, so I have alot of hairs shorter than my hemline that are just thrashed at the ends.
And I've looked at the ends under a microscope and saw lots of white dots. Not so many splits, but lots of white dots and lots of ends that look like hairs that have just broken at white dots.
I work outside alot and usually have a hat on and my hair in a braid, but the ends got some sun exposure this summer, which I think has caused much of the damage.
So anyway, I like my long layers and have decided it will be nice to get them shaped up again, even if it costs me some length.
I will try to post some pics tomorrow showing the result.

Good luck! I've been having the same problem lately, though I'm growing my layers out rather than keeping them - does make S&Ds that bit more challenging to have more than just the obvious ends to work on! :)

I wonder if it is a wee bit obsessive to be checking out your hair under a microscope. Are you expecting perfection? If so, perfection doesn't exist even in the healthiest heads of hair. Since you've been trimming your length it is probably very healthy, but your layers which are your canopy are probably in need for a cleaning (not a literal cleaning, lol). Your hair will look and feel better and may be easier to manage if this has been a challenge at all.

 Ah...no and no.
I was just curious. My ends "feel" and look damaged, but I wanted verification that I wasn't just having a bad hair week or something. I also wanted to get an idea of how far up the hair strands most of the damage was going, so I could use this information to decide how much to trim.

Good luck! I also have long layers that I love, they really work for some of us. Looking forward to seeing pics!

I wish I had a microscope to do this! I'm the visual-learning type, and it kind of bugs me not being able to properly see what my damaged ends look like. :p I'd call it more of a curiosity than 'obsessive'.
Good luck with your trim/reshaping, I'm sure it'll look great.
Me too, :)
Also, good luck with the hairdresser!

Well, at times I get obsessive about searching for damage which includes those damaged areas that can be up to two inches above my ends (the hair snaps off easily). It is horrible and my eyes get blurry after a while. Thankfully, there are not that many but they are always there hidden somewhere.
The best approach is trimming a bit at a time until you feel your hair is easier to manage.

I don't have my camera handy, but I got the trim today and it looks really nice. I was reminded how nice my stylist is; I should have her trim more often. She didn't take off more than I asked, she detangled carefully, and didn't try to talk me into cutting more or changing my style. She did offer to flat iron it but I politely declined and just had her blow dry it on a warm setting.
I had her even out the hemline. The very back of my hair apparently grows faster than everywhere else, so I was developing a tail. Now I have a nice V. She also added some long layers. About 1.5 inches came off the canopy, but only about 0.5 inch (or less) of length was trimmed.
I can't believe how much nicer it feels and moves! Will try to post a pic soon.

I love my hairdresser for the same reason - she only cuts off what I want and shapes it beautifully. I love my layers, so its really lovely to have someone who can cut them well! Pics please :D

I have the same type of stylist.....love her to death! Does exactly what I ask, and doesn't get scissor-happy!

Me, too. Plus my eyes aren't what they used to be, so I need the added advantage.
To the OP, good luck on your trim/reshaping. :) You sound like you know what's best for you, so all will be good!
