View Full Version : When your hair is that long, what are you going to do with it?

.....Thats the question I was asked today by a co-worker I showed my photoshopped pics to. I said, "I'm going to WEAR it......you think I'm going to work this hard to grow it just to cut it?"

I just thought it was funny that to her that seemed to be the only logical goal. Weird!

I was asked that not too long ago. Know my answer? Braid it and bun that.

I'll do what I do now - play with it, put it up, braid it, whatever I want! :)

Keep it in a shoebox under my bed?

Honestly, what kind of a question is that... :cheese:

I think most people seem to think the only reason you grow your hair long is so you can cut it off and donate it. o_O

I would be doing the same thing that I do now! :P Playing around with hairstyles, admiring that I have gorgeous long hair again, carefully take care of it, etc. lol

Theoretically my hair should be classic by my grad next year (May)! I'm excited. Hope it actually happens.

I think of my hair as a kind of pet, wash it, feed it, clean it, it's something to take care of and love, and admire, and it looks beautiful, growing my hair is like raising a child... :D

I want to braid it into a tomb raider braid. then dye it white. then when I get tired of it I'll cut it off into a short bob and dye it black. and start the whole process over again because I hate short hair on me :P

I honestly have no idea. I mean I love wearing it down but I know I will probably have to do that more sparingly, as of now my hair is already too heavy for a high ponytail which I like so I won't be able to do it then. Maybe a low loose pony tail with scunchies down the length. I could do a peacock twist with a whole lot of tail so maybe that will look like a long pony tail. I'm growing all one length now so I may have an easier time braiding, also if the length pulls out some of the curl that may make the braid easier.

My guess is I'll mostly be fielding questions as to why I won't be donating it!lol

I'm going to wear it down in the wind a lot. Wind in my hair makes me feel powerful, like I'm about to cast a spell or something, heheh. Also, I'll use it to lure fishermen to my undersea castle of course.

Braid it and then HIT people with it.:rollin: I like that! I've been asked that exact question. I think the expectation was that I would cut it when I reached a certain point. My reply is usually something "relax and enjoy it". Why would I take all this time, effort, and care to grow it out and just chop it off??? :crazyq: Why bother to begin with if that's what's going to happen? Why does something have to happen to it when it gets "that long"? I like the idea of smacking people who ask stupid questions with my braid. Then my hair would be useful :D

I don't get it....nobody runs around going, "Wow, you chopped all of your hair off into a chic bob. What are you going to do with that now?" Seriously. Why do people think asking such dumb questions is a good idea? Can't they just say, "Your hair looks great!" or "your hair is getting long!" and have done with it?

Braid it and wrap it around my neck like a scarf!

Or find a way to imitate the Ukranian Prime Minister's braid. How do I get my braid to look this thick?

When my hair is my goal length:

If I like it, I'll keep it, and do pretty much what I do now with it.

If I don't like it, I'll cut it back to here, and do pretty much what I do now with it. :p

We just have a different mentality around here. It's why we can patiently grow long hair in the first place, the ability to get into a head space where you don't continually need to arrive at point B and then do X. Just be. The hair grows and then it is there and then it grows some more and keeps being there. There's no need for any specific doing-ness to happen.

To Rehenna, wow... Do you know if the picture of her with it down (Under "Cultural & Political Image") is recent? Looking at that braid... It doesn't look like the same length to me. I may be wrong, though.

That is a really weird question, even ignoring the lack of social tact. Maybe they see growing your hair as some kind of temporary experiment? Many people don't understand why someone would want hair longer than a certain length, so they rationalize it.

Hmm what am I going to do with my hair, when I´m at my goal length?

Of course I´m going to teach it how to answer the phone, read the newspaper, massage my shoulders and generally do all tasks I don´t enjoy doing. :wigtongue What a question.

Can you tell I enjoy it when people ask such things? :silly: I wonder why they rarely ask anymore.

I was thinking that too! Her hair down doesn't look nearly long/thick enough to make that braid. I can make a braid that goes all the way around my head, but my hair is at tailbone, and the end of the braid is very small.

Maybe there's something in or under the braid, kind of like cheating with a sock bun?

Yeah, that's what my brain went to. My hair is 36", and mine does the same thing as your's when I try that style. I don't know what she's doing, but whatever it is, I want it! :D

Yulia Tymoshenko's hair has been discussed here before, and I think the consensus was that she uses something (presumably fake hair) to supplement her plait. Either that or she's fortunate enough to have little taper and her curls eat up more length than they appear to.

Well my hair IS that long and it is up in a bun all the time. I get all kinds of shocked stares when I "get caught" in the bathroom at work redoing my updo. Most people don't even know how long it is because it's up all the time. :)

And, for the record, I have whipped my braid in such a way that it's whacked someone ON PURPOSE before. He couldn't look me in the eye for a week afterwards.

I was looking for some sort of martial arts application for hair, but instead I found this video of a girl exclaiming "My hair's a weapon!" and then demonstrating that this is in fact true. YouTube Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvGpYnNhGvc)

She's just so chipper about that. :p Love it.

I've said to several people that when I have a long enough braid, I'm going to tie miniature morningstars (old medieval weapon - spiky ball on a stick, but just the spiky ball part) to the braid end and whip people...

I know my mother cut of her ponytail when it reached her bum. She still haves it. It's in a box somewhere.
I'll just let mine grow. And wrap it around me like some kind of Venus. I imagine it must be just as good as a blanket :eyebrows:

Keep it up with pretty shiny things and lots of braids.

"Gosh, why are you buying all those shades of eyeshadow! What a waste!"

It's the same thing. We're just choosing to have some sort of "style" to ourselves. For some it's hair, or tanning, or whatever. It's just physical appearance.

Maybe she has never had hair that long before and was just wondering how you manage hairstyles with the length.

Do these people actually say that once it reaches our desired goal lengths that it should be cut? I am not trying to be rude or anything but, it seems a bit judgmental to assume that is what other people automatically think unless they actually say it.

I know if someone asked me this question I would not be offended and I would reply that once I hit my goal length I want to dress up like a witch on Halloween and wear my hair down with the conical hat like I have always wanted too since I saw Hocus Pocus when I was 8.

A hairdresser asked me why I don't cut it as every time she saw me my hair was up. I like being able to wear it up to keep it off my face (every time I was also at work) and out of my way.

I do believe it's just that long hair is not common place and lots of people, even hairdressers, don't get that you want to have long hair but not always have it down.

I've done this, too. I actually made the bleed! I managed to catch her across the bridge of the nose and the elastic I used had a metal thing on it (pre-LHC membership!), which nicked her skin! Woops.

She learned, after that, to keep her distance from my braid.
