View Full Version : A Hairy Observation

I have been noticing a lot lately that even though the fashion world tells us long hair is gross, buns are boring, and so on and so forth, not only does long hair persist in our culture (especially for children's shows and films where I am noticing this) but there are also a TON of buns! These are just a few of the sources I am seeing this trend in as I could not find screenshots for all the films and shows.

Granny hair (http://xxlimg.com/images/62473813639349025376.jpg) (Of course they had an older woman with a bun as well, but it's not really "granny hair" if all the young women are wearing it too, right? ;) )

Barbie Fairies (http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/universal/Barbie/Barbie8_L.jpg)

Pixie Hollow Fairies (http://images.macworld.com/appguide/298153386/ss1.jpg) (Three to the left all have long hair past classic)

Tinkerbelle, Mary Fairy, Fairy Queen, and a Fairy man (who has long hair too!) (http://www.stitchkingdom.com/reviews/tinker_bell_and_the_lost_treasure/Tinker_Bell_Lost_Treasure_Photo_04.jpg)

Maybe there is hope that children will grow up loving long hair and not listen to the fashion world? I just thought this was a neat observation.

LOL, Little Orca, the links (4, 5, and 6) in your list showed a lady that I hope was photoshopped..not even Barbie had such aspirations as this woman..LOL

That is the problem I have been getting!

It shows up as barbie for me but turns into crap for other people. Ug, I will take them down until I can find better replacements. Sorry you had to see that, even if you did lol :)

Its ok, LittleOrca...I have seen worse. I found a medical site with some really great close up pix of different conditions and now my mother won't open an email with pix from me...

I don't know. I think where it's linked from is screwed up. No worries, I took them down. The other should work just fine.

Well, at least this thread started out interesting, no?

My kids love Disney and Barbie movies, especially my DD4. Not only are they growing up with Sleeping Beauty, Ariel and Jasmine, same as I did, they are growing up with Barbie who has beautiful flowing long hair, and the Pixie Hollow fairies like TinkerBell (and my favorite is Fawn, the one who has the animal ken - her braid is calf-length! :D I wants it!!!). So maybe at least one of them will be inspired like I have been, and want to keep longer hair than most of our culture.

If they don't, I'll still love them. But they'll be cut out of the will. (Just kidding....maybe... :p)

I had a barbie when I was small that had loooong black hair. My only grouse was that it wasn't like real hair and it was all knotty. Lol. But then I never played with dolls much. I liked Asterix comics more. :S

Yes, I would say "We're Winning!" My daughter is 2 and wants long hair "like a fairy princess". Hers is mid back. She is getting this (http://www.magiccabin.com/product.asp?section_id=0&department=0&search_type=normal&search_value=fairy%20bower&cur_index=&pcode=676) for Christmas, a little fairy bower where she can hide away from her brother. Sorry if that is off-topic a bit but I'm all excited about it.

I love it that long hair is marketed as princess-ish :cloud9: I just wish I had been allowed to have long hair when I was younger, as I think toys like Barbie are very popular when you're small and lots of girls like the whole princess idea :) Now we just need a long-haired toy for boys. Hmmmm. Manly Rapunzel Ken :agree:. (If anyone steals my idea and makes it into an actual toy I will hunt you down and claim the money I am owed :D)

We are winning. Heck we were winning when I was little. I had the best hair in the class and it was always referred to as "princess" or "fairy" hair. But this is good. Although I think they made tinker bell way to skinny this time around. She was very curvy back in the day and I liked her a whole lot better. :D But these are great pictures.

Are there any long-haired male dolls out there?? I can't think of any offhand, but surely there's at least one!!

They make action figures of just about everyone these days... Surely they've made one of someone with longer hair at least once.

Well, it isn't just Barbie and the Pixie Hollow bunch; Disney is upping the ante when it comes to animated hair with the release of Rapunzel. Check this site out http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/07/30/disneys-rapunzel-five-concept-art-images/

This is going to make little girls (and LHC members) the world over start swooning lol. :D

I give you Bodice-Ripper Ken (special edition, but still a real doll with long hair!)

OH, studly Ken doll, where have you been all my childhood? My Ken dolls were always so inadequate, and I always got stuck playing the gross "man" when we played barbies... I demand a redo!

I don't think there's been a single Disney princess with short hair besides Snow White, has there? Unless you count Belle.

I like it that so many characters now have long hair. I was especially happy when I first saw the Tinkerbelle movie because so many of the fairies had buns and long hair.

My 4 year old DD loves Ariel, Jasmine, and Tinkerbelle (and other princess characters, and she likes Captain Jack Sparrow (she snuck downstairs and watched the movie behind us)). Yesterday I did her hair in the caterpillar style and she was excited, thinking it was like Jasmine's hairstyle. I have also used the example of Cinderella sleeping with braids to get her to agree to wear braids to sleep at night. :)
