View Full Version : Vintage/Retro Plastic Hair Clips - Anybody know what they're called?

My mom used to have a few of these hair clips, in at least two colors (I remember a blonde color and a teal color, specifically), but I haven't seen any at all except for hers. The ones she had have long since disappeared, but she really liked them and has been looking for replacements ever since.

I found one picture online of what I believe is the same clip, but I can't find a single other picture. Here (http://www.eclecticala.com/barrettes/287Lot.jpg) is a link to the picture, it is the second item from the top.

Anybody know what it's called and if it can be found for purchase anywhere? This particular lot is on sale for $20, but it seems hardly worth it to spend that much for one little clip.

I have no clue, but thought maybe a flexi-8 would be a good sub. They look similar??

What about the Goody ouchless barrette? They come in black, brown and some colors. They seem to work the same way. http://www.goodycomfort.com/main.taf?p=1,2 Was your mom's clip big like for updos or small like for ponytail or half-up?

That almost looks like a buch and deichman hair slide (second one from the top, I mean). I'd have to see the slide part to be certain.

I've got one of those from 1982 that I treasure. I've had it quite a while and love it.

If you don't want the hairpins I'll take 'em :- ). I'd love to add them to the vintage hairpin collection.

It looks almost like a beak clip like we used to use in the salon. Maybe try Sally's website?

could be old-time substances known as bakelite or celluloid. google these terms for more info. :-)

I remember those Buch & Deichmann clips, teal was definitely one of "their" colours.

Yup, looks like they were indeed the Buch & Deichmann barrettes. I should tell my mom to sign the petition, LOL.

Oh, Fiferstone, the pins in the picture aren't mine, that pic is just the one picture I was able to find online of a barrette like the one my mom used to have.

Thanks!

Why, yes, almost! I wish they had a picture from the side of that clip, so I could see if it has little grippy teeth (my mom's did). My mom's was narrower, too, I think, but still, it's essentially the same style.

Ooh! The seller has a few more, too. I think they do have teeth, based on this picture (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=33684730).
