So since I've heard that Bobby pins can be damaging what do you use instead of them? I want to use something that can "hide" in the hair like Bobby pins but are more gentle. Are Bobby pins okay as long as you carefully take them out and not yank on them? I just can't think of any options for other gentle pins. Any suggestions?

I don't have much luck with bobby pins, although the longer, straighter pins that are similar work pretty well. A small fork hides pretty well also.

Amish hair pins work well. You can order them here: http://plainlydressed.com/veils-accessories.html (scroll down to find them).

I've also seen Good Days hair pins recommended: http://www.goodhairdays.com/magic-grip-tuth-hairpins.htm.

Bun pins (http://www.dancewearmackay.com.au/contents/media/t_7.25cm%20bun%20pins.jpg), if you're talking about holding updos.

There's bun pins and amish haipins--of the two, I'd go for the latter. Sturdier and hold much better for me than the former. I actually don't really like normal bun pins much, but they do work.

Good Hair Days pins (http://www.goodhairdays.com/magic-grip-tuth-hairpins.htm) - can be purchased at Sally's for about $3 for a package of ten. I don't use anything else.

Are you looking for anything other than pins, like a different hair accesory that will still keep your hair in place? I know one that works really well, I use it alot!!

U-shaped pins in general work really well for buns. There are lots of varieties, but I'm a bit partial to Amish pins, now that I've tried them. They don't always completely disappear unless you have silver hair, but a bit of nail polish on the bend takes care of that, if you're concerned about it.

One important point: To use them, insert them like hair forks or sticks, so that both prongs touch your head, not perpendicularly as though they were open bobby pins. That makes all the difference in being able to use them.

** This is true of all U- and V-shaped pins, please note, not just Amish pins. Just in case you misunderstand what Anje means.

You can do it without them actually touching your head, but it is important that they work best when inserted approximately "flat", not "perpendicular".
