Here is the link to the video tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtqA7NF-TQ8

My hair is too short, particularly as its tightly coiled, to do a figure 8 bun. So I tried to improvise by dividing my hair into 2 sections. Then I wrap one section on top in one direction and the other section on bottom in the opposite direction. But it never quite looks like a figure 8. It either looks like a hair blob:

Or it looks like a croissant.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v194/mwedzi/hair%20-%20part%202/croissantbun2.jpg

I must be doing something wrong. I don't mind, though, because I think it's cute.

Thanks everyone. :D I got the stick on Ebay for pretty cheap. It is not the most sturdy stick, but the styles I do generally don't put too much stress on a stick.

If I can get access to a better quality camera, I'll try to do a video tutorial.

That style looks great -- very nice touch with the rope braids in front.

Wonderful accessories as well - tasteful and unique.

And your hair looks so healthy and thick!!

Thank you! I usually don't go for tasteful, but I'm trying to diversify. :p

I'm sorry for that. :grouphug: (there's a voodoo doll smiley but not a regular hug smiley?!)

That is a spectacular updo. Upon first glance, I would have sworn up and down that your hair was approaching at least bra strap as huge as that bun is. It looks wonderful. Thanks for sharing it with us.

So awesome! I'm curious about the tutorial- I love the figure 8 and won't be able to do it for about a million years yet, so I'm eager to try a shorter-haired version, though my texture won't make such a magnificent croissant as yours!

Thanks, everyone. I just uploaded the video. Sorry about the quality. It's worse than my old camera. Don't you hate when you "upgrade" and it's worse?! I'll add the link here and to the first post:

That is a spectacular updo. Upon first glance, I would have sworn up and down that your hair was approaching at least bra strap as huge as that bun is. It looks wonderful. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thank you! It is a little below my bra strap. Stretched, that is. This is a picture from a few months ago:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3301&pictureid=41996

It will never hang to bsl, though. The longest I've seen non-locked 4b hair on an adult stretches down to the woman's thigh, but still shrinks up to around apl.

I think your hair would look great. Do you ever comb your curls out? I know that's not the desired look for most people here, but it would be the closest approsimation for the hair I used in this updo.

I find it hard to believe your hair is only ii/iii. It looks so thick!

Also, adorable hairstyle. The rope braids in front are really cute.

Thank you. I actually don't know what thickness my hair is. The way people measure is to measure the circumference of a ponytail, but I never straighten my hair. If I straightened, it would be much skinnier.

Awww I think the croissant looks better than figure 8 bun would, very good job!

Thank you. That's a bit of a consolation. :)

Thank you for the tutorial! It makes perfect sense and I can't wait to get home and try it out. I actually do often make updos on combed-out hair, so I'll give that a try for this one. Thank you!!!

Thank you again, everyone.

Pretty! Look at those toys. What toystore do you shop at? :)

I shop all over. I'm heavily influenced by this board. That first stick is from Jasonswoodworking on Etsy. The second is from Ebay. It's quite inexpensive (less than $5), but I dropped one of the two I broke and the top part came off. Oh well, you get what you pay for.
