I've been lurker for a long long time and have finally decided to grow my hair out. Right now Im skimming shoulder length with the pieces up top a bit shorter. As my hair grows out I would love to have the option of wearing braids. I see so many women with beautiful bun and braids and that just makes me want to have them too.
Lately, I've been starting up a hair library with instructional hair dvds and books. I just wanted to know what books/dvds you guys would suggest that are useful in growing and styling long healthy hair. I've been looking at Karen Ribble's books and dvds and I know for sure this is something that I want. If I get all four of Karen Ribble's products would it be a waste to get the Klutz Braid book by Anne Johnson? I looked in my local Barnes and Nobles and they didn't carry any of the Klutz hair books. Also, is there anything out there similar to the FLDS hair dvds? I thought it would be interesting to see how to use braids for different wave sets and just to have long hair grooming on tape. Plus I kind of liked their hair styles because the reminds me of one of those gibson girl styles.
Its really important to me that I have dvds and books demonstrating hair styling and grooming. I live in the middle of nowhere Alabama and cant get wireless. Right now I have Hughes net which isn't so great, but much better than dial up. I love what is on youtube but I dont want to slow down my internet speed for the day just to watch a few videos.

That's a good question! I hope the more knowledgeable members give some responses to you because I would like to know this myself.

I think it is difficult to find DVDs/books better than this forum. Everyone's hair and scalp is so different. There is so much info on this forum. I had to try several different products/methods to figure out which one works for me. And sometimes, what worked before might quit working...
This site (http://hairstyledictionary.ztn.net/filter.php?ax=o) has lots of links to different updo instructions. Also the article section of LHC is very helpful. Some are with pictures, others with a video.
If your internet connection is slow, I wonder if you can download .flv files when you don't need to use your computer. Later, you can watch it without internet connection.
Good luck!

I really like the Klutz braiding book you mentioned. I think it would a particularly good choice for you because it has a lot of hairstyles that can be done or modified for the shorter lengths. I think the instructions are pretty easy, too; but I've always found it easy to style my hair, so your mileage may vary.
Two other books I own and really like for braiding are Great Braids by Thomas Hardy and Braiding: Easy Styles for everyone by Diane Carol Bailey and Jamie Rines Jones. I've had these books for awhile, so I'm not sure they're still in print; however, I've also had luck finding older braiding books on Ebay or Half.com. And the Hair Boutique www.hairboutique.com has had styling books in the past, though I haven't looked for them lately.
Don't forget to look in the articles section here under styles, and to visit the hair styling links in Very Important Topics thread (or whatever it's called---it's a sticky). You can actually learn to do a lot of styles without having to buy a thing! Good luck!

Is this the book you mentioned?
Hair - A book of braiding and Styles by Anne Akers Johnson
ISBN 1-57054-018-7
This is an awesome book! It is divided up into hair styles with a variety of each. Very easy directions for people like me who are hair style impaired.
I like it because I can try different styles as my hair grows. Then I don't feel like I'm stuck in just one style. I also can look forward to new styles as my hair gets longer. It's also not an expensive book.
I got my book on Amazon.com from seller Leslie Cook. She is very personable, has quick delivery. She even sent my receipt on pretty paper with a personal Thank you. Good luck to you on whatever media you choose.

The link above is for the book "Grow Hair Fast - 7 Steps to a New Head of Hair in 90 Days". I've looked at this book in the bookstore and it seems to have a lot of really good information, concerning scalp massages, herbs, eating the right foods to ensure proper hair growth and elasticity...a lot of these things we've discussed right here on this site too. It seems like a very useful book for if you're struggling with hairloss or hair recession. :)

I LOVED Karen Riddle's Braid Your Own Hair book. It has been a lifesaver in teaching me how to French and Dutch braid, even how to five strand. I fully, totally recommend it.
