View Full Version : Amusing hair-growing milestones

I was just thinking about all the amusing hair milestones I have had that have reminded me of the progress I’ve made on my continuing journey to longhairedness – the ones that I would gleefully announce to those around me only to receive bemused stares. For me, the first real milestone was actually being able to see my hair. I’d never had long hair before and only ever had a short fringe or quiff, so this event scored highly on the novelty index! Then there was getting it caught in the hinges of my glasses for the first, and sadly not the last, time… :disgust:
Around the time that the “awkward stage” was ending was when I first got my hair caught under the strap of my bag and my hair started getting in the way of brushing my teeth (when my head was tilted forward). This was when I started to feel like my hair was “long” (for a man) and I had to actively start altering my habits to accommodate it.
It was a then a while before anything worthy of “milestone” status happened. Having to flick my hair out from inside my T-shirt after dressing was quite a joy, followed by hair getting in the way of applying deodorant, which is perhaps less of a joy. First getting my ponytail caught under the strap of my bag is also a negative milestone that prompted me to investigate braiding. But finding a hair in my food, then realising it was mine, then realising it was still attached cheered me up no-end.
Finally, the milestone that prompted me to make this topic was sitting on the sofa this evening watching Ross Noble’s “Fizzy Logic” DVD and realising that I was able to easily see the ends of all my hair for a S&D mission. Yay!
I know there is probably some overlap between this topic and the “You know you are a longhair when… (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=2902&highlight=long)” thread, but this one is more about anecdotes regarding the reminders of increasing length rather than the novelties associated with extreme lengths...
Care to share? :)

Oh yes, and this is starting to happen a lot, when I'm sitting or laying and try to move or get up, my hair pulls behind me.

I laughed a bit at all your mile stone examples Shastrix because I'm currently in the process of hitting or have just recently hit them myself...
Seeing my own hair - check
Hair getting caught on glasses - check
Hair in the way while brushing teeth - check
Hair long enough to get caught under [guitar] strap - check
Currently, pony tails and "hair getting in way while applying deodorant" are "In Progress" for me haha. I can make a relaxed pony tail if I wanted but I really like leaving my hair down and loose.
Note: my profile pic here is from April and my hair grows quite fast...bangs are already passed my chin :D

An amusing milestone I've noticed lately is that my hair touches the top of my thighs when I'm sitting on the loo.

I've been recently noticing my hair getting caught under my purse strap. Ow.
Another milestone for me was having to hold my hair back when spitting out toothpaste or mouthwash!

Once my hair got close to waist, I noticed I could no longer bend at the waist to pick up or fiddle with something with my hair down, because it wasn't just in my eyes but also tangled in my hands!
I was overjoyed the day I realized I could no longer put my pants on without my hair up or doing a silly hair-flip dance to get them up and buttoned!
I now have to be careful about sitting on the floor. My hair has been touching the floor (while sitting) for a while - that's nothing new, but I guess it's now at the perfect length so that when I stand up I have stepped on it (several times!) It's already under my foot or knee (I guess it's the way I turn to get up) and I'm able to straighten up a couple inches and then YANK! Ouch...

A milestone for me was being able to lean my head back before I got in the shower and see it in the mirror at TBL (my goal length). Then I chopped off a huge amount of damage and realized I couldn't spit out toothpaste anymore without holding my hair. I hadn't even noticed that my shoulders had been doing that for my for a long time.

I woke up, opened my eyes and thought it was my black cat lying across my pillow but it was my hair!!! I was like "OH, well, it is long then!" but I have dealt with the normal things too, hair being caught in the car window, hooking onto door handles as I breeze by--leading to my constant updos now!--oh the bliss!! Happy day with long hair!!!!

Hmmm... lovely :eyeroll: milestones in (I think) order of occurence:
Ends of hair reverse-braiding themselves while I'm braiding
Having to bring my hair over my shoulder to comb it
Hair caught in pants while getting dressed
Hair dangling on floor collecting dust bunnies while I'm laying on my couch with my head on the armrest
Hair getting caught in lap in between legs when I cross my legs

My hair got caught in the car door recently!!!! But that may not be due to length, just cuz I'm a clutz!!! I also have to hold it back while brushing my teeth!!! YAY!!!! and while I'm eating soup!!!! (also a factor of me being a clutz!!!) :D

When I settle on my favorite sofa to sit and read to "Wimi" & "T-lee", I have to pull my hair up from being pinned behind me:-)

A milestone for me after years of chin-length to barely-shoulder-length hair was the first time it got "kidnapped" by the seat belt winding up!
I was happy the first time my hair was long enough to be sucked out the car window...I didn't care that it got all tangled; it had been so many years since it was long enough to do that, that it reminded me of being a teenager! I was also happy the first time I had to roll down the car window so that i could change the radio station, because my hair was trapped :)
ETA: also, it recently became long/thick enough that if i have it up on a chilly night, i can actually take it down and spread it over my shoulders to keep warm
when i was about 12 years old, my best friend and i noticed our hair was the same length and we were the same height, so we put our hair in side ponytails and braided it together. she had blonde hair and i had brown so it looked really cool. we thought we could stay like that all day because we couldn't stand to be separated and we could just about read each other's mind--but we kept bonking our heads together :bounce::bounce:

For me;
* eating a sandwhich and getting a mouthful of hair
* hair caught in dogs collar
* pinning myself to a chair, by leaning on my hair
* husband pinning me to bed by hair:D by rolling over in his sleep!
* catching my hair under armpits
*catching hair under bra, when doing it up
* being able to do a bun with no clips or bobbles!

There aren't a lot of milestones I've had that "amuse" me...most of them are painful, as in my hair catching on things, or having animals chew it, or being rolled up in windows, or falling out of a badly held bun into a poopy diaper I was changing. So I'm afraid I'll have to stick with the "You know you're a longhair when...." thread. :(

Rolling over my hair when I go to get up from the computer chair. Happens every time--you'd think I'd learn. ;)
