The prompt is "The length of your hair when you first started growing. Measured from your front hairline, over your head and down your back"
My last hair cut was a pixie so I think my measurement is from hairline to nape, and I remember thinking that if I'd started at shaved and put 0 for starting length I'd have a foot of growth in the first month.
You do realize you plan to cut back to my current length, right? It is a good length.
Fun photo BTW! Much more graceful than the one I took a few months ago to see how much of a backbend I'd have to do to reach the ground. Sadly it wasn't framed well so you can't actually see what's happening on the ground.

Gossamer, that is stunning. Here's to hoping you'll keep it long for a lot longer than you intended to! A while ago you talked of cutting it shorter. How's that coming along? ;) I'm glad you didn't, don't get me wrong!!!

Oh no, I think maybe I've misinterpreted the starting length entry - maybe mods can help tell me what number I should actually have there? I thought that it meant the length at which you started to grow your hair long, not the length at join date. I think I still grow roughly 6" per year although I've never actually calculated it out.
I consider my start length BSL because that's where, in 1999, I had my super unhealthy TBL hair trimmed back to and began a slightly better hair care routine, including regular trims. I did want to grow long and didn't know where I wanted to stop, so I just kept going in for trims every six months and wearing my hair in a braid most days.
Here's a slightly embarrassing photo of me from early 2000 that gives you an idea of its length: (note tilted head so length looks a little longer than it actually was)
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=21585&d=1455798213
Here's my hair about one month after I joined in 2010:

I hope that makes a bit more sense! Sorry for the confusion! And if I have indeed used the "starting length" field incorrectly, I hope someone will let me know so I don't confuse more members!
Thanks for posting this. Now the math makes sense; you grew somewhere between 1 1/2 & 2 feet of hair in 6 years. That "embarrassing" picture is where my hair is now, more or less, which gives me hope. Your whole post gives me hope. Thank you again. :flowers:

Gossamer, that is one amazing photo.
Wonderful proof of how sexy and attractive one can be with very long hair and NOT in spite of it (though you are a lovely girl)--a one picture answer to every show Tyra Banks ever did with those obnoxious befores and afters.
I hope you and Heavenly Tresses keep photobombing us, and I must add my request also that you keep it that long for at least a little bit longer, though its your right to do as you want, of course. And you would be beautiful even with actually short hair, but your knee length was thudworthy, too. i don't think its all that important to have hair the same thickness all the way down, so see no real reason for you to cut (other than if you wnat to, of course...)

Gossamer, I very much hope you won't cut your hair shorter, I love it so much the way it is. I know you don't like the thinner ends but in my opinion they add to the beauty of your hair and I am motivated by the beauty of your hair - thinner ends and all - to not chop my own thinner ends off.
Don't cut shorter - though you are the one living with it and you must do what you like, of course :)

A "photobomb" is when someone or something intrudes into your photo unexpectedly (think random strangers in the background of a photo waving at the camera). It doesn't really matter how you use it though, I don't think it's an actual "word".

I just *wish* I could attain that length, but it's just not gonna happen. I'm happy at classic, it's my "sweet spot" and I *love* it. And that's what I need to keep telling myself too. I deeply admire those that can grow beyond classic, and just wish I could do it, but... it's just not for me. :)

My last hair cut was a pixie so I think my measurement is from hairline to nape, and I remember thinking that if I'd started at shaved and put 0 for starting length I'd have a foot of growth in the first month.
The measurement system we use is so weird, isn't it? I understand that for the sake of consistency from person to person, measuring from hairline over and done makes a lot of sense. But in terms of the numbers generated actually being equivalent to how "long" the hair is, it doesn't really do that. But if we wanted to get an accurate number for hair length, where would we start measuring from? :silly:
Thanks for posting this. Now the math makes sense; you grew somewhere between 1 1/2 & 2 feet of hair in 6 years. That "embarrassing" picture is where my hair is now, more or less, which gives me hope. Your whole post gives me hope. Thank you again. :flowers:
It takes ages and ages, but it doesn't have to be impossible. You won't know until you try! (where "trying" is equal to actively messing with it as little as possible :p)

Ahhh, the planned cut. I have such a complex mess of thoughts about cutting up to FTL or nearly-knee. As you can tell, even though I've been wanting to cut it for about a year now, I haven't done so yet.
The thinness bothers me, yes, but more than that, I miss being able to wear it down. I know that at FTL I'd still have to deal with a ton of comments, but at least I could do it, you know, rather than now where it's just plain impossible.
Inertia is a big factor, but so is feeling like I need to take all the fun pictures that I won't be able to take with it once it's shorter. But I can't really take them very well myself in my apartment, although you can tell that I do try. I need to coordinate with a photographer friend who lives downstate but we're both crazy busy. I'm sure I could ask my partner, and I have once or twice, but they don't really get why I would want to have a bunch of photos. Lately they've just pointed out a few times that my hair's dragging on the floor and wasn't I going to trim it?
Of course, I also have complex feelings about pictures themselves - once I take them/get them taken for me, what am I going to do with them? Keep them on a memory stick somewhere as souvenirs for myself? Post them on Facebook so people who know my real name can suddenly realize that I have this ridiculously long hair and invite potentially negative commentary? (It's funny, I am much less concerned about people finding out I have crochet as a hobby than I am about them finding out I have floor length hair.) Post them online somewhere under my gossamer/gossycrafts persona? If they're here, on my LHC photo albums, there's only a slight chance that a community member will download them and repost them on "admirer" sites. I've checked around, that hasn't happened yet at least in my cursory surveys. If they're hosted anywhere else, they're bound to get distributed around all over and I'll get the same sort of nonsense that led to me turning off YouTube comments and frequently blocking people who message me on Instagram.
(Sidenote: Skimming "admirer" long hair boards on pinterest and tumblr looking to see which of my pictures have been appropriated has helped convince me of the ultimately non-specialness of my hair, which does help. There are probably hundreds of thousands of people out there with hair longer than mine or in healthier condition than mine, so the world isn't going to lose anything once mine isn't floor length anymore.)
Ultimately, it's probably about me not really being comfortable with the attention or not wanting to be seen as attention seeking through my hair. But! I don't want to just cut back to FTL and start wearing it down again sometimes without having all the fun I can have (which, admittedly, is limited to pictures, not actually real life) while it's this long.
Gorgeous photo gossamer . I feel like a groupie here gauking at your photos but that's the kind of photo that could be hanging on the wall of every women dreaming of long hair
I'm really happy to have a place to share this photo where it will be seen by men and women who are interested in growing their hair long (however long they define that to be individually). :blossom: I know if I posted this online somewhere public I would be drooled over by people with other kinds of dreams of long hair.
Gossamer, your hair is making me cry again! Tears of joy, of course! Is that weird? Yeah, that's probably pretty weird. Oh well!

You know I didn't set out to "attain" any length, right? It's just what's been able to happen given a confluence of factors, most of which i don't have control over like genetics for thickness, texture, and growth rate. I love that you've found your sweet spot at Classic and continue to be happy with your hair there!

I have seen your current signature picture on my Pinterest dash. It was kind of a weird feeling honestly because I got all excited thinking I'd been recommended your own Pinterest, but then it was just another admirer with lots of pictures of Indian women brushing their hair in hotel rooms (I'm sure you know the type). One other time I think I remember seeing a photo with your watermark, but I didn't really know who you were then. Anyhow, none of this really matters except to let you know the extent of your pictures being spread around, and it certainly doesn't seem common since I peruse long hair tags a lot. :)
As for what to do with the pictures, why not frame them and put them around your home? You could even hang them in a closet/dressing room/bathroom if you don't want every guest who comes to your home commenting on them.

Maybe? I'd feel a little weird decorating my home with photos of myself, you know?
I've seen my signature pic up on Pinterest too. Since it's public, even though it's hosted by LHC, it can be pinned. But LHC album photos, even "public" albums that registered users need 25+ posts to see, can't be pinned directly. Believe me, I've checked. The watermarked ones are from when I used to host more pics over on imgur. I watermarked everything hair related there that went up on the public internet and it's served me well. My photos from pre-watermarking-days are repinned/reposted much more than the ones with annoying green or pink text over the middle. :)

Gossamer, you don't have to do anything with your hair other than enjoy it. I am thrilled that you share it with us because the pics are so pretty to look at. I don't think that there are very many people in the world anymore (especiallly not with your hairtype) who have such beautiful hair as you have which is your length, but you certainly don't have to keep it for that reason!
Its a privilege that you share it with us, it is not boasting or showing off at all. I personally wouldn't have known that your hair was possible, and I'm glad to know it, I like knowing that there are beautiful things in the world. It is true that you have to think about putting things in our sad world on other many other venues, due to the image theft, perverts, the jealousy, the people who have time to waste and think they are being funny, etc. etc. but since that's the way it is, thanks for being a brave lady and doing what you can to protect yourself, deciding what's worth it and what's not--and sharing what you feel safe sharing. My hair is only just past knee, but I completely get this. I have been debating a big trim (probably classic or so) for a long while now. I miss wearing my hair down occasionally and some of the shorter options. At the same time, I keep putting it off because I would miss things I can do now. It makes me feel ridiculous, but it is nice to know I am not alone. :) Your hair is gorgeous and will be still if you do cut it. Plus, you can always grow some more (even if that is a slow solution).

My hair's not the problem, my partner's is! I detangle before washing, try to put as many sheds on the shower wall as I wash, and then there's a trap we have over the drain too. Very little, if any, of mine makes it to the drain. Meanwhile, my partner's shorter hair all goes down the drain and clogs it up. Thanks for reminding me I need to call our maintenance guy again about the shower drain!

Yes, same system for me. Detangle thoroughly before a wash, and I have a hair "trap" thingy over my drain as well. But still, some seem to have slipped through. Don't know how that happened.

At first, that seems weird, but because I know how good you care for yourself, I see how your partner is the problem. I hope they know about the good haircare tips you learned here that can save y'all some cash!

Oh, but it really doesn't matter for them! They wash daily, use some crazy hair gel, and never condition but since their hair isn't long - no longer than earlobe length ungelled - then why should they bother following the same detailed routine that I do? Trim their own hair too, so neither of us spend very much money on our hair.
The maintenance guy coming to clean out the drain is free, by the way.

lol, I know right? When I had tb to classicl length hair in college, my dad told me he'd much prefer a wall covered in hair than a drain full of hair. I respect that!

Woah.. clogged drains no problem!! My hubby found this thing at CVS called a Zip It and once month I just poke it down the drain and get the clog of hair out.. also looks like a dead rat, but its mostly a clog made of hair, soap and hair conditoner. I guess they sell it on Amazon too:
http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-Products-00412BL-Zip-It-Cleaning/dp/B000BO9204
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkk0-cReLsM
So, since you are renting, go ahead and ask your apt manager to unclog your drain, but literally it takes me 5 minutes to clear out the drain and a couple paper towels to clean it off and an old veggie bag to put the hair clog (read dead rat of hair) in the bag. ;):magic:

Oh wow, that's quite a bit of floor length right there! What are these? 6 inch heels? 4 inch? I'm clueless about heels, can you tell?
*gets out measuring tape* 5 inches. Yikes!
It is sincerely much appreciated.
Thank you, this has given me something good to think about, as so many of your wonderful posts have done in the past. I love hearing from you!
So nice to know I'm not alone too! :) It's funny, i think even LadyLongLocks/JJJ has been planning for a while to cut back to something more manageable (I think she's going to ankle?) but life has gotten in the way
Gossamer, I sneak in here every once in a while to catch a glimpse of the real longhairs. I love the way your hair looks. It's an inspiration to me that you've gotten it where it is. That said, I don't aspire to that length, and totally understand both the desire to cut and the hesitation. Enjoy your hair at whatever length suits you.
This is so inspiring! So if I grow for 7 years...
Gossamer, I love your photo compositions as well as your hair.
Thank you both. :blossom: I think I needed to hear about other ways that my hair photos can be taken. I think critics and "over-admirers" are much more vocal and I let them get to me too much sometimes.
Gossamer, what else can I say, you have surpassed the point where hair ends and EPICNESS starts. It's not only your hair, it's what you manage to transmit with the pictures you take: all the fun, charm and power. You make it so difficult not to dream of growing to such lengths  :)
 Maybe I'll just start responding to people who ask "how long is your hair?" with... "It's epic length." hahaha. :p

Lol, the same thing happens with my husband and I and the shower drain. My hair ends up on the wall and the trashcan with very little in the drain. His collar-bone length all ends up in the drain. I wish I could say I was also able to keep my hair from clogging the vacuum as well.
Don't know much about heels, but do know that that's a LOT! Wow, can you walk comfortably on those?
A platform under the toes makes them a less extreme angle than you probably think of when you think 5 inches. I know that 4 inches without a platform is my "pain" limit, but I once modified a pair of heels to make "hooves" for a costume by cutting off the heel and adding a substantial platform to the toe. They made me 14 inches taller, if I remember correctly. Here they are: http://photo.cosplay.com/49243/2226464.jpg

About the heels, they're only ok to walk in. I've done it once, when I wore them to an event and ended up walking a couple miles in them, but I'm in no hurry to do it again! Alex Lou is right, they do have a 1" platform under the toes which helps a lot.

Of course, I also have complex feelings about pictures themselves - once I take them/get them taken for me, what am I going to do with them? Keep them on a memory stick somewhere as souvenirs for myself?
This is a occasion to hire a very talented pro to take a series. Think of it as your formal portraits. I'd even think of a video, if your hair moves gracefully. I know weight sometimes turns the metaphorical waterfall into Cartoon Character Careening down a Cliff.
That's bun drop for me, now. And I'm at your join photo.
If you are or ever will be an auntie, think of how these photos will delight, in their striking poses and astonishing lengths.
Aside from that, they would be for you, documenting the look you have overall, now. Your personal history with your self and your image.
That is valuable.
I'd even go so far as to suggest a physical photo album of your journeys, both geographic and hirsute.

Did not post for around half a year but when looking at some new pictures i got the feeling i should be here more often. Unfortunately my own hairs, well, left side is about 10 cm/4 inch below nipples, right side about nipple length, so i really can't contribute in here for at least many years without a blushing face. Anyway, i like to hand out my "cheering" and hope to see even more as we go along the length.

I'm glad because I have enjoyed your videos on YouTube. I think you are the first long hair to inspire me to grow super long. My particular frustration is that my hair is so coarse. Have you already decided when/if you're going to cut? And to where? It's beautiful at the current lenght and the lenght you choose to have. I just wonder, did you ever consider growing to terminal before cutting (I understood from another tread that your not at terminal yet :thud:) don't get me wrong, I'm just curious and its impressive to have such a long terminal lenght.
I understand floor+ lenght is not practical and that you want to cut back. I guess even back to ankle would make it more manageable again. I read that you were thinking of FTL, do you have a specific reason for that lenght? Wouldn't cutting cutting back a milestone at a time to see if that makes you happier be a less 'risky' way to find your sweet spot? You can always cut back more but growing it back if you decide it's too short takes a long time.
Sorry I'm asking so much :o
I'm just at hip so I don't understand the classic+ lenght problems yet, it's very inspiring though :) I know for sure I don't want to stop growing by the time I reach TBL.

Lapushka, Thank you for the encouragement. I definitely get you on the one step at a time. I started growing from a pixie cut in 2011-2012 winter. Seemed like my hair would never get to my shoulders then it kept getting caught behind my back and the seat back. Then it seemed like I would never reach BSL. One day poof! I swear, it grew three inches past the strap...lol. right now it is about two inches above TBL. My original goal was to be able to sit on it, so that is about 6-8 inches away. I'm tall so my length is there but body length not so much :-). My hair is too stuff for the soft buns so I have been practising the different braids instead. I have been getting oiling the hair a little first so some improvement but still looking. I am going to try ACV next.... still seem unable to post pictures so I guess I just need to be patient there as well.;)

I'm sorry a lot of styles don't work for your hair! For me, I've found that a lot of the video makers with super long hair can do styles that I can't either. I just can't even begin to do the amazing braid variations that arc691 does. My hair just won't cooperate at all because it's not smooth enough. Lots of trial and error for me to figure out what it is I'm able to do. Wishing you the best of luck and patience as you figure out what works for your hair as you grow it out too! :flower:

I hope I didn't sound rude or something.
You definitely don't sound rude!
To try to respond to all your questions in order, here I go:
I have definitely decided to cut. But I haven't decided when.
I think I will cut to somewhere in the thigh region, but I could also just cut at knee and remove 75% of my severe taper.
Yes, I originally thought I would grow out to terminal length. However, about 2-3 years ago I realized that my terminal length is past floor and revised that goal. I'm no longer interested in waiting another few years to find out where that terminal length is before I cut.
Between ankle length and floor length, I haven't noticed much difference in terms of how it is to handle, other than that I step on it more now when it's down. But you'll have to let me know your experience with the difference in manageability between ankle length and floor length once you get there! :p
At FTL or so, I could wear my hair down again instead of always pulled back in a braid or bun. I think I look pretty with the softness of my hair down but I never get to do that anymore. I have seen some gorgeous photos of people with FTL hair and think that my hair would still look long and nice at that length.
Yes, cutting back to milestones would be less risky, but I'm not concerned about that. It sounds like you are concerned, however. Why is that? It's not like I'm going back to BSL. Thigh/knee is still very long.
gossamer, your hair is amazing!
Thank you! :blossom:
Me too. Do some more hairdos for super long hair, maybe. Because those things are darn helpful to people, I think!
Is that a plant holder you're on?
I'd make more videos if I could think of styles I know that haven't already been covered by other long haired Youtubers. Does the world really need another cinnabun or nautilus bun video? :D I'd love to hear suggestions from you because I'm truly out of ideas! Because my hair is fine and grabby, not thicker and smoother like LadyLongLocks or arc691's hair, I can't do the complicated braided updos that they're so wonderful at (particularly arc691!!).
As for the plant stand... :rollin: Actually, it's a fold-over library chair (https://www.google.com/search?q=fold+over+library+chair&num=100&espv=2&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj3lu-OlPjNAhUEOCYKHd-GBhsQ_AUICSgC&biw=1596&bih=816&dpr=0.9), which we bought because at ~165cm tall, I can't reach the tops of kitchen and closet shelves! Also, I think I'm running out of ideas for fun self portraits I can take of my hair, so that's helping too with the eventual end-date of having floor+ hair. Don't worry friends, inertia is still real and nothing sudden is going to happen.
I know you get this a lot, but I am always amazed at the sheer length of your hair! It's still blows my mind that hair can grow longer than ones height.

(and also because it's a really cool piece of furniture!)
How 'bout a LWB for extreme lengths. Because it's often a challenge to keep it going past classic length. I start to struggle at about that length (from it getting so bulky).
That "plant stand" ;) definitely serves its purpose!

She ended up cutting it ~ George Michael did it

But she encourages people to grow it out long at least once in your life :)
I was surprised that she kept it fully down when she was out; dragging on the floor...unless it was just for the documentary :hmm:

Sorry for the huge size.
I looking back and had a thought. Have you tried getting lengths is ivy to intertwine in your hair braid s? Or strings of pearls or gold chains. I love to braid other people's hair and I would have so much fun with yours.. I fancied up my 11 year old daughter's hair last weekend. She was so cute. I tried to post the picture but sigh I can't seem to figure out how to from my cell phone. She is already 162.5 cm. So tall and slim and blond. She is growing her hair out now to the floor - currently bsl. And I'm just rambling. I guess I'm pretty tried.

I now have prom hair inspiration. I was thinking of getting a fancy hair comb to go with my dress, but this could work with it very well, and I've been trying to find hair jewellery that show off its length anyway (down to my waist, so not too impressive, but still).

I use this thread for inspiration, I don't know how long my hair can grow, because I've never had it longer than it is now, even as a little girl. When I question if my long hair goals (I just want to see how long it can get, wherever that is) I look here and see your beautiful hair, and it helps. Hubby thinks it's very pretty now, and showing him this super long hair makes him say things like, "just more pretty than it is now is all" and I love him for that. (not that less is less pretty, he's a smart man)
I really would love to do a photo like that waterfall one, I think long hair looks better in natural light, and in natural settings it's amazing.
Gossamer, you're looking for new ways to photo your hair? Have you played with a 3d camera yet? you could hang upside down from one of these with the camera below you! http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/file.php?40,file=250123,filename=monkeybars.jpg

I have been collecting "hair toys" for the last two months. I ordered all these shimmery and shiny doodads. My daughter makes me bring them out periodically so she can decide what she wants to wear to school. She is allowed to only on pain of promise that she will return the items and not lose them at school. Somehow she always seems to pick my favorites... might be something family or whatever... lol

Yeah, but most hair toys I've seen conceal the length of your hair by bunning it up. I want to show the full length of it - so yep, I'll go with your idea of braiding things in.

I haven't seen a lot of options for hair jewelry or accessories to show off the length but I have seen hair twisters at the Renaissance Festival with interchangeable charms.
http://www.hairtwisters.com/ has the twisters as well as hair armor which I love but I worry about it pulling and breaking the hair. They come in small sizes for accent braids or large sizes to include all of the hair.
You could also get hair lacers http://www.hairwearoriginals.com/collections/hair-lacer-collection or if you are crafty you could make your own and they are both really easy to use. Actually you don't even have to be all that crafty to make a hair lacer as it's just some cord with beads spaced along the length.

i went to her website "longhairyo.com" she doesnt say much about her hair care routine, but says i took her 3 years to grow from shoulder to waist, she says she used to wash it every 3 days, but now she only washes it once a week, she uses about 100ml of shampoo and conditioner (no particular brand) she spends about an hour washing it, and she lets it airdry for 4 hours, she also says that she collects and saves all her loose and shed hairs
I used to visit here website many years ago ever since back in the early 2000s, and yes she doesn't sat that much about her hair care routine. The airdrying part my hair is not as long as hers. It BSL, and it takes 5 or 6 hours to airdry on it's own. I think it's because it's so thick. But hopefully one of these days my hair will reach the floor. I don't want it dragging the floor but I want it very close to the floor. Like, to my ankles or something like that.

ii/iii hair is not that thick. I have iii hair and it does take 8+H to dry if left to its own devices. But I diffuse after about 2-4H of airdrying. That and a good towel dry before will do wonders!
I'd go one milestone at a time. It's great to have goals, but patience and taking it one day at a time often helps. ;)

I never saw much of the lady from the first video but I always admired Crystal Gayle since I was very young. Funny to think that now I get asked all the same questions that she has always been asked about her hair.
The air drying time can also vary with thickness of the hair and climate. It is very humid where I live and it can take most of the day to dry. The ends dry pretty quickly but the area from neck to waist can take a very long time for me. I used to live in a very arid climate and my hair could be dry in about half the time. But that was also relative to the condition of my hair--dry climate=dry hair, humid climate=moisturized hair.
I admire your goal for ankle length. It was a good length for me as I was still able to wear it down but it did not drag on the floor to get stepped on or damage the ends. The nice thing about growing it out to that length was that I was able to experience different lengths along the way and adjust to them. If I found a length that was giving me trouble I would either maintain or trim it back until I could adjust to it.

It's so incredible to read about your long long hair experiences! I can only imagine having ankle length hair one day... I would love to experience it, I'm just not sure if that's in the cards for my terminal length or not. It does give me motivation to keep caring for my hair as gently and as well as I possibly can though... who knows! :)

This is great advice, I'm going to remember this when stages along the way bum me out. Ligeia has 15 cm ponytail circumference! That is the superthick! There's also the very fine iii with 10 cm ponytail circumference. Fine hair loves to clump to nothing in a braid. Buns aren't that big and heavy so fine haired can get away with extreme length without neck pains. I have 8-8,5 cm ponytail circumference and I barely feel my hair in a braid or updo. Wearing it down would be the surefire to cutting it off the next day because of breakage. I don't have the superthin strands but my hair loves to catch itself on basically everything.

Yes, Dark40, leayellena is right, Ligeia's hair is *very* thick, on the thicker side of iii; not ii/iii at all.

And yet, when you are younger, that same long hair makes you look so much younger, or so they say, and so I was told by so many jealous people for a solid ten years... Ironically, some of those same people now tell me how lucky I am that I still look so young, yet now they are convinced it must be because of some super-special skin care routine. I've decided that people just don't like the minority with long hair, and will come up with any excuse to try and get them to cut it so that we "fit in" to their nice little mold. Whatever. It's my hair, and I'll do what I want with it, when I want, how I want, because it's what I want, and if it causes someone that much of a problem, maybe they don't need to be around me.

Well, I missed my official join date anniversary of November 10, 2007 but it's still November so I can squeak in right? I guess over the years I have settled into my routine so I don't post a lot and a lot of you may have no idea who I am! When I first found the forum I was searching for others like me that had very long hair. My length was lower calf and I finally had all my kids in school so I could focus more on myself for a change. I was looking for more style ideas and better ways to care for it as it was very neglected taking care of 5 kids. Most of the time it was in a french or dutch braid but some days I didn't have time to even brush or comb it. I tried to put it up with claw clips but had no idea what I was doing and the clips were never big enough. My hair seemed to delight in destroying any kind of hair clip I tried to use to tame it. After finding LHC so many things changed for me! It is in much better condition and I have learned to do so many braids and buns, especially thanks to youtube tutorials.
Everyone here has always been so kind, helpful, supportive and resourceful through the years that even though I'm not here a lot I always love to come here. Over the years I haven't changed a whole lot in my routine and I admit that I am a big chicken when it comes to changing hair products. I am a conehead and probably always will be. I tried the natural, organic, cone-free route and my hair did not adjust well at all so back to the cones I went. My brushing, combing and detangling habits have changed and my hair is in much better condition than when I started here.
I am a terrible record keeper so my growth chart is a lot of guesstimating with some for sure measurements thrown in. From 2010 to 2014 I was keeping it at ankle length, whenever it would touch the floor I would trim 2 or 3 inches to keep it at ankle. I did wear it down a lot and I decided since it was still growing I would let it go beyond floor and see how far it would get before it either drove me crazy or I couldn't take care of it by myself anymore. This time last year I reached 90 inches and have been keeping it there to thicken up the ends a bit. And I'm not very good at that either as it's currently at 92 inches. I may have a problem with procrastination :D I can still do several kinds of braids and buns although I have to be careful which buns as they can be very heavy and give me a headache. It took my a long time to adjust to wearing buns and the weight of them but if I spread them out and distribute the weight they can last all day.
Okay, enough talking, let's get to the pictures!!!

HeavenlyTresses, Your hair over the years up until now is simply gorgeous!!! I'm also planning on growing my hair to my ankles or floor too! I just love those waves and the color of your hair in those photos too!!! I'm glad that as you've joined here at LHC the condition of your hair did improve. Same here for me too. I joined back in 2010, and since joining I have learned a lot on how to take better care of my hair.

HeavenlyTresses, I love your hair so much! It truly is spectacular! Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful progress pictures. Can I ask you how often you trim your hair? Or are you just letting it grow now? Some of your pictures look like it is being kept trimmed, you see, so I was wondering if and how often you trim it.

Sarahlabyrinth Thank you so much! It's about time I start posting again huh? :) I don't have a set schedule for trimming my hair, really I just do it when I notice the ends are getting really uneven. Now that I wear it up all the time it's definitely become more fairytailed. I used to trim it every 3 to 4 months now I do microtrims whenever I think about it which could be 2 months or 6 months. It really makes a difference now that I can't wear it down anymore and I really only notice it when I braid it.

WOW 92"! That is unbelievable! That's over SEVEN FEET!!
Those truck pictures are incredible! You can definitely see how your hair looks shinier and healthier now- good habits really do make a difference!
And it looks like your hair is in fantastic condition- and showing no signs of slowing down!
I've tried no-cone in the past and have found that my hair just needs that extra slip to help it from getting tangled. Which conditioner do you like?

Thank you! I have a longer truck timeline but I haven't figured out how to put that many pictures together in one shot. Right now I am using Suave Professionals, alternating between almond + shea butter and morrocan infusion. I use the almond + shea butter the most and the moroccan infusion when my scalp and the ends feel dry.

Yes, I have that experience now too. I thought I couldn't go beyond classic, but once you grow on, it's like... where is the "length"? It's not long enough.

Not everyone uses their LHC album to show pics but when they do (which HeavenlyTresses does) you will need the 25 posts. If people use another photo hosting website like imgur.com then you won't need the posts.

I used to have my pics on other host sites but I like to keep them here in my album, mostly because I'm scatterbrained and forget which pictures I shared or didn't share. This way I have them all in one spot. The only other place I share pics is on the facebook lhc page and instagram. The facebook page is very good like the forum, with instagram you're on your own for keeping the creepers away. So far I've been pretty lucky there...knock on wood :)

I'm a super simple girl when it comes to washing and detangling. Before I wash, I brush with a tangle teezer (knock off brand) so I minimize shedding in the shower and take care of any tangles. I use a handful of conditioner on the length and squish to condish, leaving it in while I go about other showerly duties. Then I rinse, running my fingers through for any tangles. I let it air dry and try not to comb/finger comb too much because it is wavy and if I comb it out it turns out all puffy and frizzy. The only tools I really use are my fingers, a wide tooth comb and a TT brush and a bit of oil if it feels dry.
How long are your sticks? I imagine they have to be really long. Your buns are magnificent.
Ah, that's a great question! It really depends what kind of bun I make as to what size I need. The Wonder Woman sticks have about 5 usable inches and really aren't enough. The acrylics are 7 inches are a great size but some buns you can barely see them and if I'm gonna buy pretty sticks I want to see them! The forged steel sticks were custom made and are 8 inches and are a perfect length. If I wear both steel sticks the horizontal one is fine but if I use the second one for stabilization I have to keep checking on it so it doesn't slide out as it's just a little bit heavy and sometimes wants to escape. I also have one set of wooden sticks (braided bun) that are 9 inches along with several bamboo chopsticks that work great because I can actually see the decorative ends and still have enough length for the bun.

Thank you for answering all our questions and sharing! I have maybe a silly question, but do you bump your sticks on things all the time? I find even wearing 6-6.5 inch sticks I will bump them getting in/out of cars, getting too close to the corner of a wall, just silly random things will catch and jerk my head back a bit LOL. Does this happen to you frequently? Sorry if it's a silly thing to ask.

Thank you so very much, HeavenlyTresses! :flowers: So detangling doesn't take you too long, even after a wash? Do you have to detangle every day or can you get away with detangling less frequently?
That's really comforting to know that detangling is reasonably doable even at such great lengths, because I want to keep growing and have seemingly similar texture. You are a great inspiration! And thanks so much for the information on the wide-tooth comb and the Tangle Teezer (I love them, too, especially the "Thick & Curly" edition of the TT (with slightly longer teeth)).

Sorry for the very late response! That's not a silly question at all! I think the only time I really have problems with sticks is getting in the car. Sometimes I don't duck my head down far enough and catch them on the doorframe and yowzer does that hurt! Oh and sometimes my husband is very thankful he wears glasses or he probably would have lost an eye by now

I don't have to detangle too often because my hair is mostly in a bun. I try to brush it before I wash it to detangle and get rid of shed hairs so I don't lose them all in the shower. I used to brush before I washed so as to let it air dry and not frizz out the waves. Now since it is beyond floor it's always in a braid or bun so it doesn't matter anymore. I do miss being able to wear it down though.

When I pull my braid tassel straight I can step on it while standing up straight! I discovered this while getting ready in the morning with my sleep braid hanging loose and I noticed it brushing the backs of my ankles but it was curling up so I wanted to see how long it would be without the curl. I pulled my braid over my shoulder grabbed the tassel with my toes stepped down and was able to stand like that without any uncomfortable pulling. Now I need to remember to bun my braid or loop it around my neck or something when walking around.

Fun! Maybe time for three braids then braided together? Eats up length like almost nothing else! :D

"Almost" being the operative word, as IIRC you demonstrated the hair crotchet technqiue - that eats up length like nothing else. :)
When my hair is loose, I'm having to be careful about backing up... because I'm prone to step on the 10 or so strands that are at (or just a bit past) floor-length.

That's awesome! I don't think my braid will ever be long enough to stand on!
If you are patient enough, it just might! I never expected my hair to get this long. I planned on stopping at ankle if I could get there. There were threats by various people to cut it off in my sleep if it ever reached the floor and I am very happy They haven't made good on their threats

3 braids braided together = 4 braids= 4*(amount of time spent braiding my hair now) + (extra time due to more links for thinner sections of hair)= 4*~5minutes)+(extra time due to more links for thinner sections of hair)= minimum of 20 minutes = more time than I am willing to take for an everyday/sleep hairstyle.

Crochet braids do eat up length a lot but always feel lumpy if loose and are hard for me to bun. :(
I also step on my hair quite a bit when loose. I have to stay still while brushing my hair or I step on it and now it seems I will start stepping on my braid soon.

Congratulations! There are still milestones to be reached even after floor length :) I remember feeling my hair on the back of my calves and I just thought that was the most awesome thing ever. Then the first time it tickled the tops of my feet.....well, first I thought there was a spider but after I realized it was my hair I was happy. I still haven't figured out how to keep my tassel from dragging on the ground other than doing a couple of crochet loops at the end. Looks a little weird but it's better than stepping on it.

Multi-strand braids (e.g. 5-, 7-strand braids, etc) eat up length (the more strands, the more length they eat up), but are quite fiddly, especially at great lengths.
I think I'd simply loop a simple English braid (fold it in two) and tie it like that with a ribbon or just do a knot or two with the braid. Knots made with a braid don't tangle hair up like knots based on loose hair.

Thought I'd pop in and revive this thread today. Still 92 inches, closer to 93. I said I was going to maintain at 90 but since the ends are okay I've just let it go. Pardon the unfinished pool deck but I have limited locations I can use to show the full length :)

Thank you Dark40! I have always cut my ends to have a blunt hemline and now I just let them go. I guess it's a new adjustment to go through to have fairy tail ends. Sometimes they do feel dry and grabby and I feel like cutting off 3 or 4 inches but the more I inspect them the shorter that trim gets and ends up being a quarter of an inch to maybe an inch. Hah, even at this length I have trouble letting go :D

Okay, enough talking, let's get to the pictures!!!

soldiersong Thank you! I guess I haven't had a real true haircut since I was 10 years old. I am 46 now but over the years I have always trimmed to maintain an even hemline. Every 4 to 6 months I would take off an inch or two but over the years I cut less and less. When I reached ankle I maintained that length for several years. Even though it may not feel like it your hair is always growing. It may seem like it's taking forever for it to grow but I promise with some patience you will reach your goal :)

You're welcome! Oh, ok cool. Yeah, I also trim ends every now and then to have a blunt hemline too. When I trim off a cm that mostly evens off my ends pretty well! Yes, it is hard adjusting to fairy tail ends. I really hate fairy tail ends. Yes, when they do start to feel dry and grabby it is best to cut off 3 or 4 inches or inspect it more to a shorter trim. Hah, yeah I bet even at your length you do have trouble letting go. :D

yay, I'm so happy to see that there is a floor length + thread! :D (at least I can't remember writing in this thread, and I can't click my own profile and see my own postings, so I will never know, lol!)
my hair is beyond floor length for a while now, and it kind of sucks, because even my braids are too long at this point, but I also don't see a reason to cut my hair shorter, because a "comfortable" length would be like classic, and that's too short for me. So I'm wearing my hair in a bun all the time ;) Worth it, I still love my love hair!
I love when people post their long hair pics, but I don't really have the guts to do it anymore. I posted pictures of my hair online when it was shorter, but since classic length I'm super paranoid about posting pics online, because there seem to be so many sites that download them and post them on their ... uhm.... special blogs. I'm not sure how I would react if I would find my pics on those blogs. How do you all cope with that? Maybe I'm a little bit too shy and paranoid about that. I posted pics of my hair on my Instagram account, but I don't use tags and pray that no one beside my friends is seeing it. :alcoholic:

Pictures from the back only so my face is not attached to it. I also do my best to ignore the existence of blogs of the sort you mention. I only ever post hair pictures to LHC. I don't let other people send/post pictures of my hair if it is attached to my identity. Some people take pictures of my hair when I get it done at the Renaissance Festival but most people ask and get told pictures from the back only. I have no clue what they do with those pictures and I put bad possibilities out of my mind.

Heavenly Tresses, just thinking about the tips tickling my feet makes me smile, they already touch my heels when I lift them for walking..
About privacy, I have no issue with it, whatsoever, I have a youtube channel and also share my photos on pinterest and my album here is public. All my photos are of my back and my videos never show my face, that is essential for me but apart from that, I enjoy people sharing my photos and enjoying them.
I watermark them too, so they know they are mine but that is it, share away people, while I and you can, hair is not forever, unfortunately, and while in good condition, I want to show if off and enjoy it.
Suffice to say, if you do not want your photos shared, you might as well not posting them at all because once uploaded, even if it seems like it is private, there is always a way to grab it.
Let me end by saying, I would love to see your hair ;), I promise I wont steal the photo for my gigantic, private, ******istic album where you all are!!!!

Alright so I'm quite far from floor length, but the reason I'm posting is I do notice that comet buns eat up ALOT of length.. Maybe that's partly because I have thick-ish hair too. At your length, I guess that would depend on how far beyond floor length you are, too. Would a braided comet bun allow you to wear your braid loose and swinging?

Seems you both remember this much better than I have (more than 11 years ago now); I don't remember joining such a site, but I vaguely recall somehow stumbling upon the images in question and that they were "appreciated" (ahem) in that certain way, which was hilarious as the "appreciators" had assumed they were seeing only women. :p (I remember the pictures referenced, but I don't remember anything else, so if either of you would like to send me a PM to remind me of those details, please feel free to do so. Quite possible that you are remembering the whole story and my memories have inflated over the years...likely from the ensuing discussion here.

Oh, I mostly just remembered the reaction to the discoveries. Lots of amusement here. And, there were two distinct events/photos. One with you and me (Muir Woods, IIRC?), and the other (different time and place) with a couple of women and I braided together (with me in the middle).

I claim age related memory loss or...ahem...memory enhancement. But the entire incident had feathers flying all over the chicken house...so to speak.

I did some new length shots today. The first since my hair was above knee length. My ends are a bit hard to see because they are currently died light pink starting around ankle/floor length.

:agape: WOW!! :thudpile:
Y'know, on LHC I think we can become somewhat desensitised to amazing hair because we see exceptionally long and exceptionally healthy basically every time we come here (if not every day, especially if we are owners of 'superlong' by conventional standards). But seriously, what a treat to see your hair for the first time, and truly my reaction was what I typed :D Thank you so much for sharing!!

Thank you. I have a couple of pictures dating back a few years in my album if you want to look at some older ones I posted.

Thank you. I'm currently growing longer. The plan was to bleach my ends light blonde and have fun with color without care for damage for a bit then chop back to ankle because I was tired of stepping on my hair, but I've been enjoying the pink too much to cut it now, so still growing longer.
Oh! I love the pink ends!
Thanks.
