View Full Version : My Trick Ponytail - add a years growth in seconds - no hairpiece

I remembered a ponytail I used to do in high school when I was growing my hair. I had totally forgotten about it. It may well be well known here on LHC but I thought I'd show some pics.

It's basically a half up but you also take hair from around the sides and all the way to the nape of your neck, but leave out the length in the middle of your head.

You need a barette or flexi 8 for this as a hair elastic would most probably make the ponytail stick out and you'd be able to see that you haven't gathered all of it.

I remember a boy who always commented on my hair noticed how I'd done it and said "but that's cheating". I just smiled - who cares - I got length!!

Here are two pics of me. My hair is layered so my ponytail is short anyways. The first is all the hair gathered up in the flexi8 and the second is using my method. Looks like a year or more growth there and you wouldn't know it's not all up in there! The different colours in the photos are just due to the sun coming out.

That's a neat trick. I don't have a flexi but I'm off to experiment anyways.

October 30th, 2009, 08:17 PM
Any regular barette with do. Actually this flexi is a little big for this hairstyle and after about an hour it slides out. I'm going to buy a smaller size flexi anyway but I never had that happen with a barette.

Thanks for reminding me of this neat trick! My mom used to do it to my hair when I was young (and actually had really long hair) and told me she used to wear her hair that way to sock hops in the 1950's.

Oooh, this has promise! Definitely going to have to play around with this soon. Anything to give the look of more length, until I actually get more length!!

Thanks for sharing. :)

Your hair is gorgeous!
Do you think it would work on straight hair? (My hair is straight & fine)

And would these barrettes work? https://www.allinkosher.com/images/Product/medium/22960.jpg
Or if not, is there something cute and girly that anyone on here could recommend instead?

I think I mean hair clip instead of barette. Those that you show there are more of a slide aren't they? I mean something that clicks into place. Whatever you would normally use for a half up would work (except elastics unless you put it in and then kind of pull it down to make it hide the other hair if that makes sense.

My hair is wavy now but I used to wear it straight and it worked very well. Just have a good look in the mirror from the back and each side or take photos. I'm sure it would work on all kinds of hair.

That's lovely! I'm not a half up person but I might try this. It falls so nicely and flatteringly around the neck.... *speeding off to search for unused small flexis*

I remember this from school, it was great!

With flat thin straight hair one must be very careful about what barrettes to use both above and below - elastics just won't work... the top pony sticks out enough to show the lower pony, and then the top pony splits to fall down either side of the lower pony... grrr.

julliams
October 31st, 2009, 05:29 AM
There isn't really a lower ponytail - it's just hair left loose - does that make sense - hence the length.

Thanks for the reminder. We used to do this when I was at school too. A friend told me that's how Linda Hamilton wore her hair in Terminator 2 and I always spend way too much time when I'm watching the movie trying to tell for sure. :)

I love this! I'm always holding my hair up in that way trying to make it work but can never secure it properly. Thanks for the tips!!! I love ponytails but I hate how they make my hair look shorter. No more!

It works, but I would suggest putting waves or curls in first, because with straight, fine hair this style will result in more taper which can look too thin in some cases (like mine!) Also, I have to be careful what I wear with this updo, because low ponytails will drag across my shoulders/back & get tangles underneath.

You can also use claw-clips for this, too - that way, the gathered hair isn't lifted up & it looks like it's all in a loose ponytail. I have to use the kind with rubber grips or extra "teeth" inside to avoid slipping.

That's pretty neat! :) My ponytails, when at crown, are just now hitting right at classic length on my body. It would be neat to have a pony that's creeping towards mid-thigh. :D

This is such a hit! I think we should name it and make it an official LHC style. Let's see...it's more than a half-up and not a full pony tail. Maybe we could call it a "3/4-up," or an "up-down do," or a "piece-of-pie-down updo." Just brainstorming, here. What do you think?

A friend told me that's how Linda Hamilton wore her hair in Terminator 2 and I always spend way too much time when I'm watching the movie trying to tell for sure. :)I loved her hair in that movie. I'll have to watch it more closely next time. I remember reading they wanted her to cut her hair for the movie and she talked them out of it

I used to do a version of that back in junior high. I had layers and remnants of a perm, so I washed and set my hair several times a week. I thought I was "Miss Thang" with my "longer" ponytail :D

It works quite well! Nice trick. I have tried a banana clip, which give the same impression of longer hair, but they slide in my hair and I always got a headache from them. This is much better! Thanks for sharing.

How about making an article from this?

Heidi_234
November 1st, 2009, 10:11 AM
I think it can work with a hair elastic, for those of you who don't have or want to use a barrette/flexi - just do the top ponytail as a topsy tail. ;)

I feel really stupid because I seem to be the only one that doesn't understand how you did it. If you left some hair down in the middle, where is it coming out? I'm confused! :(

CindyLea1
November 1st, 2009, 11:13 PM
I love this do. I do it all the time.

Heatherdazy--It's basically a half or rather 3/4 pony. You don't grab up the hair that comes from the middle of your scalp to the nape. You grab the front, top, sides, and some from behind your ears. You leave a strip, like a mohawk, running from the ponytail to your neck. It is hidden by the ponytail, and appears to be longer from the back.

Hope that helps.

You go to the articles section, there is a link at the bottom left side saing "add article". Click that and ... well I don't know what happens then, I've never written one either. I remember mods have said they trust us so there is no mod approval needed.

Oh no. Now you just ruined on of my favourite films. I'll never be able to not think about ponytails. It's bad enough concentrating knowing what John will be like by the fourth film :eyebrows:

I love that idea, the softness would be good casually dressed up I think...shame I have no barettes.

This is a great idea, and it looks cute on you! I will definitely try it; but I fear my hair is too heavy to stay up in the 3/4 up style. I don't know if any of my flexi's or clips will stay, I think the weight will drag it all down and the clip or flexi will slide off ....

I'll try it tomorrow and see.
