View Full Version : Rudimentary oil question

Hi! I have been oiling my hair (pre-shampoo) for about 8 months. It just seems, the more I research about oil treatments the more I wonder what they actually do for the hair. I understand how they can benefit one's hair post shampoo and conditioner. However, how exactly does a pre-shampoo oil treatment benefit the hair? Is it like a deep conditioner? Does it moisturize and nourish? Is it worth while to oil your hair if you are going to shampoo it out within 8 hours? I read the oiling post but it does not answer my question. Thank you.

Well for me, when I do a HEAVY prewash oiling, especially with jojoba, it is much easier to detangle after the wash. I find it really moisturizing, not sure about nourishing.

That's my biggest reason for doing prewash oiling. Right now, with the heat just getting turned on and it being so dry outside, my hair is dry and needs that moisture.

I don't shampoo it out. I wash it out with CO. I've found that the more oil I use at night and the more frequently I oil, my hair gets better and better. By that I mean that it's softer, silkier, and feels more moisturized. CO works beautifully. It gets the greasiness out but leaves behind soft silky hair. My hair can soak up a lot of oil in the 6-8 hours it's on my hair. I should also mention that SMT works too instead of a plain old CO wash. I'm a fan of either WR or VO5 for CO washing.

I pre-wash oil and I do hybrid washes. I find my ends a lot softer and far more manageable than w/o oiling. I'm in the same area as LL3 and the forced heat is murder on my hair during the cold winter months...Dry, flaky and very fly away. Using this method works well to keep the aforementioned at bay.

I find that oiling helps most if you are on a non-SLS and no-cone routine. I find that all of the oil isn't washed out with non-SLS shampoo, but enough is to leave the hair conditioned and not greasy. I find it really helps when my hair is frizzy or feeling dry, and I don't have to use a leave-in afterwards (if I do a heavy scalp and length oiling, which I usually do).
It is less obvious if you're on an SLS routine, but I'm certain that it helps. It's like a deep conditioning treatment. Most people who are on an SLS routine and use oil also use it on their length as a leave-in. Its moisturizing and makes it easier to comb/braid/whatever.

I hope this helps a little, this is a very interesting thread. :flower:

It may have something to do w/hair type as well. I use SLS and cones. I can't live w/o either. :D

For me, oiling before wash keeps the shampoo from drying out my hair.

Also, what effects oil might have depends on whether or not they will penetrate the hair shaft or just coat it (Though admittedly there is some controversy over which does what).

Pre-shampoo oiling is said to prevent protein loss, especially during the detangling and combing after the wash... Post wash, while hair is still wet it seals in the moisture in your length, but some say hair still needs to be wet for that. Some do dry oiling, they say it helps them to see how much they need so they don't over do it. Some say it depends on what type of oil you use because some say, ie coconut fans, that the coconut molecules(?) are small enough to penetrate the shaft to actually improve hair, others say this is hooey and oil is oil. I'm convinced that deep-oiling my hair made my shampoo less drying. It also left my hair easier to comb through afterwards
Quite often I'd leave the oil on for a few days, wearing a hat when I left the house. I found the longer I left the oil in my hair, the greater the effects.

Amen to that, I like to oil Friday Night, then wash Sunday night or monday morning. I can definitely tell the difference when I don't for a few weeks.

I have not done a wash since Monday and have oiled everyday. I'm a little under the weather; otherwise I would have washed by now...I have unbraided, sprayed and reoiled everyday since then. I'm really looking forward to washing :)
