View Full Version : I just cut some wispy face framing layers!!!

I've been wondering what to do for ages because I just look far too severe when I wear updos with all my hair tied back but didn't really think bangs would suit me. Today I very spontaneously cut some wispy face framing layers and absolutely love it!
I can only recommend it to any of you with the same problem. I now feel comfortable wearing a relatively high ponytail or a bun because it just looks softer. I can't believe what a difference chopping off so little hair makes. Anyone else had the same experience?

Yes; I used to do the same. It's all grown out now, though. It became so convenient to be able to pull everything back when I'm doing dirty, sweaty work. But I liked how I looked in buns a lot better with the face-framing layers.

I really think wispy face framing layers are very soft and pretty. And If they ever get in the way you can always hold them back with a pretty fabric headband or scarf.

I do! Without bangs and a little side 'wispies' I look like my Dad. He's a good looking guy, but I prefer a more feminine look. I agree completely that sacrificing the length of a few hairs is well worth it for some of us.

I'll try and take some pictures and put them in my album, not exactly sure how to cover up my face though, can anyone help?

For a quick way, just open up the photo in your computer's Paint program for editing......and then scribble or run the eraser over your face, lol. There are probably more professional-looking ways of doing it, but I don't know all the tricks, as I've never been hugely concerned with anyone seeing me. I've never been shy and I don't think I've ever said anything on here that I wouldn't say in real life to anyone. ;)
For the record, I love wispy face-framing layers too - I have them myself, naturally. There is a halo of hair all around my head that won't get any longer EVER than a few inches. They really do soften up an other-wise severe bun....but they're murder on windy days when they fly away. :p

Well, some of us, anyway. Headbands slide right off me, unless they're the hard plastic kind with teeth, which pull.

Is there anybody with flat, thin , fine 1a/F/i/ii/ hair here who has cut wispy bangs and had it work? I need to do something because I just look terrible with my hair all scraped back. However, I have no cow-licks, tendrils, curls or body of any kind in my hair. It also gets greasy after 24 hrs and lays flat against my face.
For these reasons I've been afraid to try what the OP has done successfully!

OOh I'd love to see.
I've been thinking about cutting some in too, but then I think, as I already have bangs, do I need it?
You can also hold your hand infront of your face when taking the picture.

If you have the right kind of hair these layers will be very nice. For me, they would be straight little strings by the time I got from home to work. :( I simply must be satisfied with the tight-bunned-mean-lady look. Oh well.
Plus, any face-framing layers would make my pitiful little bun even smaller than it is now.

I've been contemplating cutting just a few locks on the forehead to frame my face, too. But I'm scared I won't like it and then it'll take forever to grow out. shudder:

Ah, I've been thinking about doing something like this, because I love when there's some hair hanging loose to frame the face, but I'm too scared to do it, because I have the feeling my hair will go crazy if it's that short and just fluff into something curly that I don't have any control over. XD

Face framing layers suit just about everybody! They give your haircut just the right kind of shape in the front, and can really help to soften any face. I love all one length hair as much as the next guy, but to be honest it really is a very severe look to have all of your hair just long and hanging in your face without anything to frame it.

Really? Even with straight little strings, like embee said? Very well put, BTW! Describes my bangs to a T when I had 'em. This really is the big question for me. Are a couple of lank, stringy strands around my face better or worse than a lot of lank, stringy long strands?! I don't consider it a problem with my hair down...it's when it's UP that it looks so horrendous.
I was going to start a thread about this today but the OP here beat me to it :). I hate to hijack her thread though, so maybe I will start another one.

MsBubbles: don't mind the hijack at all!! Just wanted to start a discussion about whether wispy face-framing layers look good or not because I was so surprised at what a difference they make on my hair although I hardly cut much hair at all. Feel free to keep discussing here!!

I would love to be able to have little layers like this without them going all over the place and being oddly curly! I also can't stand how they feel against my face sometime...but I think they always look lovely, and if you like them, then that was a wonderful decision to make.

Cool! :)
Did you just start cutting, or how did you go about deciding which hairs to cut? At times I have almost done it on impulse but my hair is so straight, a bad cut really shows.

My thoughts exactly ;)
Sometimes I pull out a tendril or two at the front to soften an updo, but it looks a bit odd, as it's either just a bit of "hairline fluff", or it's a really long strand :p

I took my time with it and pulled my hair back into a ponytail held with my hand. Then I pulled a few pieces out starting slightly outwards from the middle of my forehead - I chopped off these small strands to just below chin level and then pulled a few more pieces out of the pony tail a little lower on my hairline towards my ears. I chopped off these pieces a little longer than chin level. When I saw how small the strands were and how little hair I was actually cutting, I got brave and just went for the chop. It really was minimal hair loss. I don't think my circumference will really measure any different at all. the thing about chopping at chin level is also that you just can't go wrong becuase they still fit back into a pony if you really don't want them showing. I think, if you take your time and keep pulling pieces out and putting them back if it's too much, then you can't really go wrong.

If anybody wants to see what face framing layers do for wavy hair, my taming the web photoalbum contains up-dos with all my face-framing layers out (second row down toward the right), some of them, and none. As my hair grew, I could get more and more of the layers to stay in the up-do until this year; now they all stay.
How it was cut: I sectioned out about 1-inch of bangs measured from the hairline at my forehead toward the top of my head, then took as straight a line as I could down to just in front of each ear. I pulled the rest of my hair back, then took the fringe section forward to line up with my nose, twisted the section to the right and snipped straight across so that the shortest section would be about nose length, then twisted to the left and cut straight across the bottom again. This broke up the layers so that they weren't chunky but more feathered. Later my hair dresser ran her scissors down the outer perimeter of the sides of my hair so that I've actually got a U that started at the shortest layer (which is now longer than collar-bone).

OK I know this is an old thread...but I just did this! I didn't cut off much hair and it's only a few wispy bits around my face at chin-length...but I feel strangely liberated from the severity of my updos :D. I think this lightweight section near my face also allows me to - dare I say it - fake a bit of height in a bun! * Gasp! * Never thought it possible with my hair.
I combined what the OP said with what Spidermom said and I think it worked. We shall see. Tomorrow is my greasy 2nd day updo necessary evil, so we'll see if the face framing layers look halfway decent. If not I'm ok just washing them every day. Anything to stop my face looking so darned morose.

I have bangs and face framing layers, I cut them myself several months ago. I absolutely love the look, and I can slick everything back and pin it if I have/want to.
So much fun!
I can't remember a time when I didn't have at least some kind of face framing layers other than childhood really. They give so much life and spunk to everything.

How did you 'cut them yourself'? What was your thought process about where and what to cut, or did you just trim what was already there? Mine were all the same length as the rest of my hair so I had trouble knowing where to cut. I want to make them thicker, i.e. cut more hair, but am afraid I'll butcher it. I have no waves so a bad cut is really obvious with my hair.

I'm working on growing out my bangs, and they've hit that nice face-framing layer phase now. And I really don't notice them getting any greasier any faster than the rest of my hair, unless I start playing with them. However, that all is oils from my hands, and not from my head, so...

I cut some face framing layers about a month ago, and I'm really happy with them :)
I used Spidermom's method, but only sectioned off a centimetre's worth of hair (instead of an inch). Since my temple hair doesn't grow past chin legth, there wasn't a lot to cut.
I cut to about collarbone length (stretched) first, and a week later, when I was feeling braver, I shortened it to shoulder length when stretched, so now it's a little past chin length when wavy.
I love how the layers soften updos (no more ballet class look!). I also find that if I brush all my hair back for an updo, the layers don't appear - it's as of they weren't even there.

Definitely! Last time I had my hair cut (two years ago??) the stylist made the bangs way, way too wide - I grew two sections at the sides down, and when the got to chin, i realized my hair curls all the time just in those two places - ds's hair does too, it's so cute! - so i left it at that length.

yes! The severe pulled back look has bothered me since I was a little kid and being the naive little kid I was I cut the wispies myself. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't know how to cut hair at all, so instead I have these two strands on the sides of my face that are blunt cut and looked funny. Even then I thought it looked better than the severe pulled back look.
I have blunt bangs with face framing layers around my face. It looks much better now than it did when I was a little girl. I don't think I can live without some amount of hair framing my face to soften updos.

Interesting thread; I've been contemplating this myself.

This is my situation, too--two large sections of bangs that are now between chin and collarbone and curl around my ears, whether I let them dry tucked in or not. I like having something there, but these chunks are very large and unshapely. I am hesitant to cut anything else until they grow out long enough to stay securely in a low ponytail, but this will give me something to consider in the meantime.

I need to trim my face framing layers back. I have been growing out a heavy blunt fringe, which turned into beautiful J shaped long bangs. I'd tease them round my fingers so they'd curl up slightly making a J shape so they weren't just straight. They're now shoulder length so a bit too long to frame my face and get put up with the rest of my hair. Plus they stay straight now and won't curl up any more.
I think I'll cut them again back to chin length. You can always pin them back with bobby pins or little hair clips. I love face framing layers :)

That sounds like a really good idea. I tried bangs for a while but they were just too much trouble. They looked good one day and horrible the next. :P Maybe someday I'll get brave and try cutting some soft layers.
Do you have photos?

My hair type is very different from yours, but I've found that dampening the hair and letting it dry on a large roller keeps it from getting stringy.

You are lucky! Anything wet or moist = flat, straight hair for me (i.e, its natural state). I tried blow drying them on huge rollers after they were dry. They poofed for 15 mins and then were gone. Strings again.
Tendrils ain't gonna happen on my hair! When will I finally learn that?!

I love the way wispies look, they are super cute. However, they make my face itch all day!EDIT:Even if I have bobbies or a hair band, I can never get all of them in! I wish it wasn't so, cause I think they look feminine and versatile, especially with updos.
