View Full Version : Recreating this style?

I've been watching the new BBC miniseries of Emma, and I love the way Emma wears her hair. She's got SL hair, and as far as I can tell it's curls pinned up and encircled by a (fake) braid.

Could I do pin curls and pin the curls up, perhaps? In the second picture it looks more bunned, but I tried a bun encircled by a braid and it looked horribly lopsided. ETA: At first I thought it could be a sock bun, but if you look at the first picture it's quite flat against her head, not like a sock bun at all (at least, not like mine, which stick out about two inches).

I apologise for the poor quality of the pictures. I Googled and couldn't find anything that showed the style, so I took a couple screencaps from iPlayer.

Try a sock bun then braid the loose ends around it?

Yeah, it looks like a messy sockbun with the ends braided and wrapped around.

You could also try putting half or 2/3 of your hair up in the sock bun and braiding the rest to wrap around.

I can get my wurly hair to look like that when instead of pulling my hair all the way over the sock, I take individual sections and sort of loop/twist them around the sock. That way preserves my curls more and makes the whole thing more full.

To me, it looks like this style (http://www.network54.com/Forum/242462/message/1109551843/Instructions+for+Cheater+Bun----finally+-%29), only with the rolled hair arranged less neatly. I agree that it looks like pinned up curls rather than a bun style.

See, I don't think it looks like a sock bun, or at least not like my sock buns look like. It's closer to the head than a sock bun; my sock buns stick out from my head a lot, and that one's flat. Maybe my sock buns are just fail :p

I might try that style, Zéphine; it looks like a sock bun only less protuberant.

It's kind of similar to this style http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=26

No problem, I was hunting around for some inspiration for my own hair when I saw that style and thought it looked pretty similar to what you were looking for.

I agree with everyone else. She most likely had her hair curled first with a curling iron to get that wavy texture she has in that photo. Then, she had all of her hair rolled into a sock bun. The braid is a false hairpiece that is used to accent the bun.

Here is a great tutorial by Torrin for a braided sock bun:

It looks like in the picture she has wavy or scrunchy hair. If you like that look then you may try leaving it braided or rolled up for a while before doing the sock bun.

I've got something in my photo album (Spidermom tames the web) that I learned from Amoretti's blog called the Spanish Lady Bun. The style you show looks similar, but done with curly hair.

I was just looking at the instructions for that bun this morning (though my mind didn't compute that it might look similar). I don't have nearly enough hair for it yet, unfortunately :(

My hair is barely long enough for it. One side of the braid looks quite skinny compared to the side featured in my photo. I think the style featured at the beginning of this thread must use a pin-on braid.

Yeah, they used a lot of hairpieces and pinned them on. It might be harder to do it with your own hair, but I think it's possible.:)

I thought that looked like Romola Garai! And Jodhi May is in it as well. They were both in Daniel Deronda. :)
