View Full Version : Is henna a drug?

I think that I'm addicted to henna, but in a strange way.... As if I was going back to the same ex-boyfriend with who I know it doesn't work...
I've hennaed 2 times in my life, and both times, I've been waiting 2 years to get rid of it cause I thought it didn't suit my skin tone,
The color itself is beautiful, especially on the sun, but I tought I look like a sort of witch with it...
And now, with the autumn, with my boring hair color, with your beautiful henna pictures, I want to put this mud on my head again...
Did it happened to you?
Is it serious, doctor?
my hair now:

I'm going through that right now too. I was almost at waist with henna but cut it all off to go bleach blond for the summer :shake:
Now I'm looking at all the hennaed hair and coveting it, wanting that weight of mud on my head too, lol. And I know it oxodized into an unflattering color with my skin tone, but still.......
Definately a drug

Unfortunately, their is no known cure except more henna. The symptoms can be managed with a gloss. Do not take intravenously, orally, or suppositorily. :)
ps. It you may like it better if you adjust makeup to flatter your knew hair, or die your eyebrows as well. Or just don't leave it on very long so your natural cool tones come through.

I wear a little more blush as a redhead, and gray, green, purple or no eyeshadows. By eyes are hazel and I'm moon-stone pale, I guess you're a little olive toned though? Seriously, deep down in my heart of hearts I like to think all people can go red in some form. Warming up the skin tone is key for me.
Your bone structure is so lovely though I fail to see how any colour could look bad if you work it!
I know what you mean about lipstick though. So many tubes, so few shades. It takes some serious prep work for that stuff to not slip off, leaving a gorrey cakey ring of sick around the outside.

I think it is a dangerous drug!
Seriously, I hate dyeing my hair. Every time I've ever done it, I can't wait to get my natural color back; I hate the upkeep, and no matter how beautiful the dyed color is, it never seems quite right to me, and I just want my normal, boring hair back.
BUT, every time I am on LHC, I look at the beautiful hennaheads and I hear that little devil, whispering in my ear, telling me "Just one time. C'mon, just a gloss, you won't get hooked, promise...." and I'm afraid I'll give in! Danger, danger!

LOL it IS a drug! I've gone from hip length to close to a pixie over a couple of years trying to get back to my normal hair color. And what did I do the moment my hair hit chin length? That's right.. glossed it. And then a little more... and a little more. Still not up to the uber industrial strength henna I used to do... but still.
I'm back to trying to go natural - in a weird round-a-bout way lol... I'm using Manic Panic now... a lovely (if wacky) hair color product that washes out - so by the time I'm bored with the color, it'll be gone. And then I'll be able to enjoy the natural shade underneath - or color again. I look at manic Panic hair color as what the patch is to people trying to quit cigarettes... it gives that fix - but in a way as to hopefully slowly wean the person off.... :-D
But man... everytime I see the awesome hennaheads on here... yeah. There's got to be something addictive about henna! :-D

Is henna a drug?
I'm an addict if it is;)
I started henna'ng about 10 months ago and I would never go back. I get stares all the time and the shine can not be beat. Although I wish it would thicken my hair more than it actually has......but that's ok. I'll take what I can get. The color is not natural by any means though. I have the bottom half completely saturated and my color is a winey D. auburn.
I do a treatment every 3 weeks. Either a root touchup or a strong fullhead gloss. Can't get enough of the stuff.

I am addicted too. As many times as I have said, "no more!" here I sit right now with a load of mud on my head. There is something so relaxing about it for me. I get so many compliments on the color that I don't know why I resist at times. I think it is the smell, but I can deal with it. ;)

I think it is the smell
I've been trying different add ins to try and help with the smell and I liked what I came up with last root job. I used 50g mixed with really strong chamomile tea, splash of lemon juice to release. Than I put in 2 tbp each of cinnamon & ginger. 2 tbs of dark cocoa powder and a bit of cheap suave coconut co to make it more creamy, although some creme of coconut would due the same thing and it would be more natural, might try that next. I didn't mind the smell 1 bit with this mix.

im with you. i actually like the smell now. doesn't bother me a bit. when i help my sis do her henna/indigo, i get grossed out. weird how you can get used to a disgusting smell by exposing yourself to it on a regular basis. sis only does henna/indigo once every 3 months so that's why i always notice the indigo smell...yuk! makes for gorgeous color though!

I LOVE Manic Panic!!! Haven't seen it in a while, though... I always used the Rubine shade, which was supposed to be bright red, but on my blond hair it would come out fuchia - and it smelled fruity, too! Good times, good times...
I've never used henna, but after hearing about how it conditions and thickens I am intrigued. I don't really want to change my color, though I've heard tell of a "clear" henna... I must investigate this further! :eye:

Pinkbunny, 'clear henna' is usually known as cassia obovata :flower:
I am another henna addict. I tried it, loved it (Body Shop henna, 'raging red' packet) then discovered BAQ. I hennaed for ages and then quit, but I've now come back. I thought I hated henna on my - nope, I just hate henna left on overnight or longer, with multiple head applications, on me. One 3-hour app of Punjabi Prime is perfect for my skintone and hair colour.
I also love the smell, but my Bf thinks it stinks  I add ginger tea to my mix which cools the hay scent off a bit.

Well at least with 2009 jamila henna, if you don't want it, you can resell it and probably make a small profit. You'll love it though!! it's really creamy, and smooth as a paste. Goes on really well. Jamila is also the best henna powder for treating Hand Foot Syndrome (cancer patients taking certain medications suffer from this at times depending on the drug they are taking).

In some countries they use henna as makeup, but I don't know how safe it is. If you make a mistake in application it would probably take a long time for it to wear off, so you may have crooked lipstick for quite some time.:p

Yes addicted too. When I have a head full of heavy mud I always wonder why did I do I do this to myself. Sometimes I start out just doing the roots and then end up doing the whole head. I did my roots yesterday and I'm thinking about doing whole head tomorrow because I didn't get the back as well as I would have liked.
Even worse my daughter loves the smell and when I have a batch mixed up she kind of sticks her head in the bowl and sniffs. She's blond and I've actually considered getting some cassia for her. I might be passing this on.

It most definitely IS a drug.. One that caused me to dye my hair various unflattering shades of red and dark brown for a couple of years (with a few highlights episodes inbetween).
The only way I have managed to quit is that I'm now so very grey that you could see the roots if I didn't henna once a fortnight. It's gorgeous on other people though, and I miss the condition, but oh boy, I am so much more self-confident with lighter hair.

But after day 3 the effect was a bit too much and I couldn't wait for it to wear off.
Then when I decided I should give it another go it was like remembering an old friend.
I am of course talking about the smell of Henna. :D
The colour and the fact that it covered greys and stayed in hair had me hooked from the get go.

I was about to say that it's because it's hair pempring, which is always nice, but nobody get hooked on SMTs like that, now do they?
Maybe it's because the effect - shine, strengh, color - lasts for longer, so it's not like SMT. If you had an SMT that would retain moisture to your hair for a month, wouldn't you look forward your next treatment?

Ditto. I just did my third henna dye and I am trying NOT to do a fourth one too soon...so hard! :p

Oh no, I have been doing cassia/henna to blend in some grays...for about eight months now. You mean I have been dabbling in a gateway drug?
I admit, I've already considered doing full strength henna. My skin is very fair and when I chemically dyed my hair red a year ago, I got a lot of compliments. Hmmmm. Am I succumbing? Should I try to resist?

In the last month I hennaed so often my hair got too dry (more than once a week - 5 times I think). I believe I should wait for at least two weeks, but I'm not satisfied with my colour. It's too orange, so I want to henna as often as possible to darken it. Maybe if I used more oil or added cocoa butter?

If you're trying to go darker as quickly as possible, I suggest NOT adding any oils or butters to your mix, as they could interfere with the maximum amount of color absorbing into your hair. Also, anything you add to a henna mix dilutes it, so you might want to stick with plain old henna and enough liquid to mix it up.
My color has built up nicely after repeat applications, from an orangey tint to a very rich red, and I've never used anything other than henna powder and water (except when using conditioner to do a gloss).

I started with a dark blonde color and it took me about 3-4 full applications, all day long treatments to reach total saturation in my hair. I do use very strong henna though, henna from yemen. I have NO orange color in my hair at all.
How do you dye release and how long do you leave the henna paste in?

Very interesting thread. I know it is old but I think I am addicted to henna too. I try now to at least wait two weeks between applications and do my roots only, but I have soo much henna in my freezer it is crazy. Henna from all over the world as well as Indian store henna. Every time my husband travels to the middle east I ask him to buy me some. I have over ten killos of henna stacked in the freezer. From Yemen,Egypt,Morocco and now I just got some from Sudan as well. I won't stop hennaying before emptying my freezer I guessshudder:

OMG, this explains it :p I can't remember how many times during the last 6 months or so I've sworn not to touch henna again with a ten-foot pole, as I've been trying to remove my henna (the hard way) and grow out my natural colour, and to say that henna sticks like glue in your hair is a huge understatement... And now I've just recently found out I'd prefer to be redhead after all, but if so, with demi and semi dyes, not henna as it's unremovable; and what do I find myself doing but reading henna threads... :o It seems there's no cure! What can I do to convince myself that I should not.go.back to henna?!?
It's just like the the thread starter said in the first post, like being drawn back to the same ex with whom you know it probably won't work...

Ha! I am using Surya Henna Cream for my little not-really-henna fix. Because too much henna and indigo led to me inadvertently getting black hair, which looked pretty unnatural on me.
I Color B4-ed my latest Lush henna off because I thought I could quit henna and go back to a golden brown colour. One week later I have just fished the rest of the Caca Brun brick out of the rubbish. Luckily it was covered up and didn't get dirty. So I guess I'll be glossing when I get enough grey through to bother me. I was missing the dark brunette look. I've been waging this on-off battle for a few years now.
On the plus side, my hair looks SO healthy. :D And I don't have to go to the hairdressers. Frankly, I'd rather go to the dentist (no offence to any hairdressers who may be reading).

I henna my grey roots every two weeks...and the rest of my hair! Every time I intend to just do the roots, but...as I'm mixing it up it just seems silly to bother with the mess and the waiting and everything just to do roots. And it makes my hair so shiny...and strong...and the heavenly hay scent mixed up with drops of rose and lavender and patchouli essential oil...
And soon I am in front of the bathroom mirror with 200 grams on my head, scraping the last little bit out of the bowl to get a little extra along my hairline. Yes, I am at full saturation, a deep wine/burgundy and if the compliments are any indication, it suits me well. If it didn't, I think I would still be at saturation and loving it anyway. It's nice to be addicted to something good for me!

One or two - involving involuntary mulletings, pixie-ings and uneven bobs. And I am always super-polite and friendly. I self-trim too, but a really good professional haircut is better - just can't guarantee I'd get one! The cut I had to remove the black was the ugliest ever, and so unlike the picture I took in.

It's official: henna is a drug! At least for me. I have been a henna user for many many years on and off (13 years maybe?) but last week I was a bleached blonde who wanted to get warm golden tones and used 1/2oz of henna with yogurt...great shiny result and beautiful golden tones.
Tonight I was watching and reading the henna thread and admiring all the beautiful results...and I thought: "I loved my old henna hair! I still have 1/2oz of it...". So there we go, second application of henna w/hot water and I am now a strawberry blonde...and I LOVE it! I already purchased fresh henna because I bet my dying won't stop. What can I say? I am happy again :D I didn't use gloves and my hands are just slightly orange, I don't mind because they smell of the drug we are talking about!
I would post a picture but my hair are still wet...and I must go in front of the mirror admiring my new henna look!!

I just hennaed for the first time and its definitely a drug! I'm already plotting what to do with it next time. I'm not quiet sure if won't fade or something. I know its not suppose to fade, but I've only used chemical dyes so my brain can't comprehend this simple concept yet. My sister tells me my my skin is too dark and has too much yellow to look good with red hair. I never let that stop me from dyeing red, burgundy, black cherry, Ronald McDonald Red, etc. I am hating my dark roots but I figure I'll end up doing sloppy root jobs that turn into full applications and the chemically treated part will darken up in time.:D

Yes. I am happy being an addict. I just did like my 10th whole head application since october. I like the cool mud on my head. I love the smell. The feeling of incredible clean one gets during and after hennaing is simply the best it feels divine.
I will admit as someone with naturally cool coloring that henna is not my best look. Especially when it was orange brown at first.... :( but after many applications as it gets more true red it is starting to look a lot better.
oh yes and the extra .75 (2.75 to 3.5) pony circumference is enough to make me a henna head for life!
oh...and that shine
Oh and those indestructible ends....I may never have to trim as long as I henna.... Ok I'm going to go before I get carried away talking about my favorite thing in the world...

I can't stand the smell, dislike the mess and the feel of it dripping down my neck after a few hours, and yet I still keep coming back to it. My hair's just so shiny! And pretty! And RED!

This thread cracks me up! And YES it is indeed addicting. I hennaed my hair red, got bored and tried to do brown but came out with this awful burghundy plum color, decided I was DONE with henna, grew it out and stuck with it for an entire year, caved and hennaed straight to black, kept it for 9 months, tried to lighten it, immediately missed it and re-hennaed. It's a love hate relationship but I believe I am a henna junkie for life.

Though I must say, a henna/indigo mix is truly not the same as straight henna. Thats what I miss the most.... the feel, the shine, the SMELL! Indigo smells like tar and gives me a headache... blech. Wonder what would happen if I switched over to straight henna, I wonder if monthly full head applications would ever be dark enough to blend with the henndigo black length... wishful thinking :(

It might blend pretty well, espcially since it might redden up the hennindigo ala the Girltron method.
