Oh darn, you know - pretty work, but those turned sticks make me think of table and chair legs or those posts holding up the banister. I just can't fall in love.

little_acorn
October 22nd, 2009, 06:58 PM
Yeah I suggested a range of sizes, some that are less ornate, some different woods, different inlay patterns etc etc

- if anyone has any other ideas let me know an I'll pass them on :D
- he's really keen to make stuff for fun that we might like

wg I agree, wendyg. I get so frustrated because some woodcrafters think that the average hairstick needs to be 7" long.

neoma: what I can never figure out is how anyone wears an 8in stick - and you do see some of those.

I'm another who prefers shorter sticks. Shorter sticks also do better with not-so-large toppers IMO, to keep the stick balanced.

It would be nice if he could mail to non-US destinations - but then seeing as you are in NZ, little acorn, I guess you already have that covered .

ClareDee
October 23rd, 2009, 06:05 AM
Very nice sticks. Agree with wendyg - some shorter ones would be great. Or maybe he could offer to shorten any sticks to the buyer's preferred length after purchase.

Oh, and encourage him to list international shipping prices! :)

I messaged him to ask about a custom order. It's in process now, so I'll let you guys know how it turns out!

He's very, very nice and replies very quickly, by the way. I did suggest shorter sticks (he's making a shorter, less ornate one for me, with a malachite inlay).

Ooh, I like those. I'll have to check in in a bit to see how they look a little shorter and less ornate, but the general look appeals to me.

I've got him/her hearted. Maybe that'll translate to getting something (I look a lot more than I buy).

wg I agree. Even if my bun were big enough to merit one, the stick would, well "stick" out past my head on both sides.

chloeishere
October 28th, 2009, 07:55 PM
It arrived! And it's so, so beautiful. He really means it when he says the finish is like the one on a piano, it's incredibly smooth, and very shiny. The inlay work is absolutely incredible! I love it! It came in a black velvet pouched, packed in bubblewrap, packed in a box like ketylos or graydogs come in.

But... I can't do pictures right now. My camera is at home, my webcam cannot do any justice at all, and my camera phone is almost as bad.

I'll take pictures the next time I'm home with cleanish hair, I promise!

:cheese: ok does anyone live near Timberstone Turnings, who are based in Overland Park Kansas and would be willing to give them a hand with a prototype? :cheese:

Doug is seeking a hair model to try out a new prototype hair stick he is working on for wound buns. If anyone is interested in trialling the new stick type out please send me a PM.

I should point out that I don't work for Timberstone Turnings and have no moneitary interest in Timberstone Turnings. Doug's just become a bit of an internet buddy of mine and I would help him out if I was closer. Basically, Doug is obsessed with making things in wood on his lathe and wants to make the best sticks he can for us users.:flower:

Hi! I'm sorry for the wait guys. I can't believe how busy my life is, right now-- but, to make up for the wait, I spent some quality time with my camera, and I took a LOT of pictures. Dial-up, beware!
This is seriously my favorite stick that I've ever owned. I've worn it every day since I got it, though I do have different stick that I wear for sleeping. :p
I really tried to capture how pretty this stick is, but you just don't get the feel from pictures. I did my absolute best, though.
Full length
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_7009c.jpg
Topper focus-- it's different from every angle, and it's really pretty from every angle, but I just don't have the capabilities to capture it.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_6959c.jpg
This is a really horrible messy equilibrium bun that I just did to get my hair off my back while I was carrying a backpack and about 50 pounds of other stuff down from my car. It is a decent view of the topper, though.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_6936c.jpg
Lazy wrap bun:
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_6998c.jpg
Nautilus bun, which I only recently mastered. It's two different angles on the same bun.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_6964c.jpg
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_6970c.jpg

Thank you so much for the compliments on the stick Sha-na-na, little_acorn, Elle, and Tangerine!

I did my best, but t's definitely prettier is person. I should mention that the wood color is closest in this one:
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k152/chloeishere/IMG_6959c.jpg
And the stone color isn't perfect in any of them, it's more vivid, and a beautiful vibrant green that I really couldn't capture accurately. But if you imagine it as a more vivid green with the same variations, you get the idea.

He is apparently going to name this basic style (tapered stick with a larger round topper, with a inlay stripe) the Chloe. Eep! I just looked at the listings he put up, and the name is featured rather prominently. Oh well!

Thanks, Tangerine, it is pretty cool. I don't think it'll ever be an Ursula from Baerreis, but that's okie-dokie by me. He did ask first if it was okay to call it that. I thought it was nice of him to offer, but wow, he really mentions the name a few times there!

I just checked my mail and my plain Chloes arrived! They are amazingly prettier than my lackluster self photo skills show.

The finish on them is so smooth and glossy and the wood grain (color) kind of goes from dark brown to a honey in the sun gold.

They're more dainty than they look in the pictures too. Very sturdy and solid feeling though.

I just convo'ed Doug. I said that I was interested in a 5" Gabon ebony or African blackwood Chloe stick with opal (natural or lab-created) inlay.

He replied within an hour or so:

Thanks for your inquiry, I'm loving the LHC based on what I'm hearing in various conversations on custom orders.

A couple of things... 1st, I can't work with Ebony, I discovered several years ago (the hard way) that I'm alergic to the dust, that's the reason I use Blackwood. As far as the finish goes, I use a finish that can't be purchased in a can like laquer or shellac, it's my own formula, and it's very hard (and shiny). You may want to check with Chloe as a reference, I believe she was impressed with it, in fact I think her feedback stated so.

As far as the opal is concerned, I've tried working with the Natural stone several times and my inlay results haven't been good because the stone is extremely hard. It burns up grinding burrs in seconds, and like I said, the results just aren't good. I've never tried the lab created stone (nor did I know there is such a thing), do you know if it's similarly hard? If it's not as hard, I'd be glad to give it a shot, I'd just need to find some.

OK, so I'll be happy with African blackwood. I don't want him to invest in lab-created opal, since I suspect that it will be as hard as the real deal.

Now I just have to figure out which stone I want him to use instead. I want something very neutral, so I can wear it with my work clothes, most of which are black or brown.

What about moonstone? I know Beetnik has done moonstone inlay before so it probably isn't as hard and is very neutral (lovely, gorgeous :D)

I am getting the design that melikai posted, with the inlays on both sides, wood will be blackwood with mother of pearl inlay:cheese:

OK, I just got another convo from Doug. I am blown away...

Just a quick follow-up, my wife is out running errands today and I asked her to go to the gemstone store and see if she can get some lab created opal... if she does find it, I'll do a test inlay tomorrow to see if it's workable and let you know.Wow! Talk about trying to keep your customers happy!

I really hope that she can get some and that he can work with it.

If not, I am thinking that citrine inlay would be lovely. It's prety neutral and would look good with most of my black and brown clothes.

He does have great service. I asked him if his finish was water-resistant or not, and he made up a test section and tested it that weekend to see if it was or not!

I hope he can make the opal work, but if not, either citrine or mother of pearl would both be lovely! Opal is one of my favorite stones.

Yes, MOP is the other stone that I'm considering. The contrast would be lovely.

:D I like the lab created ones, just because of the different colors. I love black, but as you've probably noticed by the hair toys I choose, I also LOVE color. There are so many pretty combinations!
I'm definitely getting a pair of these (http://www.bodyartforms.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=2911) in my goal size with my next BAF order. I had a teal-faux-opal pair that was the same style, and they were amazing in person. I got a lot of compliments.

I received the following convo from Doug this evening:
Well, curiosity got the better part of me after work... and I'm standing by my original statement, it just doesn't look good in our opinion. Not only is it hard as a rock, (no pun intended) but it looks kind of like light blue washed out glass. I don't think you'll like it.

I replied that I greatly appreciated all the trouble that he went to.

I decided on a 5" cocobolo Chloe with double (blue) turquoise inlay. He's going to make one for me. :D

He also said that he has a number of Chloes made up already that he will be posting soon. Not to enable anyone or anything.

You guys are all evil enablers!

His work is truly beautiful. I've had an idea for a hairstick in my head for some time, but I'm not sure if it's doable. It involves gemstone inlay too, and this is the first time I've seen a hairstick artist who comes close to already doing what I have in mind. I'm going to contact him to see if my design idea is even possible on a turned stick.

If it is, I'll be digging through my couch cushions for the spare cash to buy one! :D

I have a question for anybody who owns one of Doug's sticks with a double end - like this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/Swirling-Juliette-Hair-Stick_W0QQitemZ180433707268QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item2a02afe104). Does it slide easily into the hair, or does the thingie on the end make it hard to insert? I've been imagining it being difficult to put in, I'm not quite sure why there'd be a thing on the end.

Uh... I need to broaden my descriptive vocabulary. I rely on "thing" and "thingie" too often to describe things. :D Hope you all were able to follow that.

Tangerine - I did design it...I asked him for a simple, double-ended Chloe stick, so originally he had it as a double-topper with the Chloe ends, but I was worried it wouldn't insert well, so I asked him to render the ends more equally sized with the stick, tip them a bit, and to include the sort of bump just prior to the ends to help catch in the hair better. (all the while having no idea what he was up to with the magnets! lol) I LOVE my design as it turned out in the end, and I should be getting it in the mail sometime in the next day or so (left it up on the site for others to see but had it mailed Monday). I'll be sure to post action shots. I desperately love the Yellowheart color, but I think this design would also be particularly stunning in the darker wood color as well, so I'm saving up!! :D

he's very talented and he is REALLY great to work with. He was done with my piece and had it listed when I decided I had reservations about the design, and he had no problem taking it off and redoing the ends for me. I highly recommend him to work with!!! (Plus, he'll name the stick after you, and that's just...well, that's kind of cool. :) )

This design is a hairstick lover's dream come true. It's lightweight, but strong, and it slides right in - no pulling, no catching, no issues at all. You can feel the "catch" as the bumps on either side slide into place around the bun. Hold is very secure both vertically and horizontally because of the end bumps just before the finials. Smoothest finish EVER, and it's glossy and deep, it really is like a piano. Sorry I could not capture the color, I had to use the flash and it washed it out a bit. I'll take more pics later...but in the meanwhile, I am SO getting this same design in a darker wood color as well, and I can totally see this as one of my very favorite sticks - and definitely a go-to when I'm in a hurry!!

No, it inserts right into any bun I've tried so far (lazy wrap, celtic, braided, cinnamon, chinese, figure 8) with a little wrist-twist. It's designed specifically to be able to do that no matter which side you are sliding it into - hence the double pointed ends. It stays put because of the slight bump at the end of each side of the usable length. It's pretty much a perfect hairstick design. :D

I received my 5" cocobolo and turquoise Choloe stick today. It is unbelievably beautiful. The design is elegant, the inlay is perfect, the finish is truly like a grand piano -- smooth as glass.

Doug's craftsmanship is equal to Graydog's. In my opinion, Graydog (and maybe Monk) have been the gold standard in hairtoys. Until now, my best hairstick is a turquoise topped, heirloom-quality Graydog that I gladly paid a small fortune for. My new Timberstone Turnings hairstick is every bit as well crafted.

I am already planning my next purchase -- maybe an African blackwood Chloe with MOP crosshatch.

I just paid for my two custom sticks and he already had two sticks up that I REALLY want.

This man is amazing. He completed and shipped my custom orders out within three days(would have been sooner if I hadn't asked for a more difficult length). Then today I broke down and bought another one! He emailed me on etsy thanking me for another purchase, on a Saturday!

I was honest, I told him I'm just greedy and trying to snatch up what I like before he becomes too popular.

I can't believe I've ordered three sticks, without evening receiving my first ones yet.

With his beautiful work, quality finishes, and customer service, I hope he becomes wildly popular. Has he been added to our sticky thread of hair toy artists?

The left one is the crosshatch chloe in cocobolo with mother of pearl inlay. Sadly the machine he uses for the crosshatch cannot(as far as he knows, but I think he's working on figuring out if he can) accommodate the longer length that I wanted. It is JUST long enough, and I'm sad to think about when I will outgrow it! The right stick is the princess style in lacewood with mother of pearl inlay also. Those are beautiful! What's the functional length of the Chloe? These sticks are so lovely, something that strikes the idea of being an heirloom to pass on to a few generations. If you're into that type of thing of course :).

Longlocks3

The functional length on the chloe is 5 inches. I wanted 6 but if he figures out how to do that design on longer length I might just ask for a custom order of the exact same stick.

They are super pretty. I'm only 20, so if they can last throughout my life they certainly would be an heirloom!

I just ordered an African blackwood Chloe with MOP swirls. It's based on the crosshatch Chloe, but instead of the crosshatch, I asked him to extend the ribbons up into the top finial and end in a solid band of MOP.

He's going to make the first band where the bottom finial joins with the stick.

I'm really excited about this hairstick. He's going to ship it on Monday. This calls for dancing cheese and bananas. :cheese::disco:

Thanks shrimp and Neoma!

It really IS that colour, here's a somewhat better picture of the bun

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/5804/timbblmal.jpg

Here's the Pencil Bun video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0k3dD4qX34

It took me a little while to master it, because I'm not very good at grasping instructions! Keep your fingers sticking out of the loop, and twist the loop right up to the top of the head. The pencil must go right through the loop and out the other side, catch scalp hair, flip and through coil right to left, catching a bit of coil on the way out.

It's great for shorter hair, stays very well, copes well with layers and I like the fact that it's not twisted. It's quite informal-looking, but the little "tail" that protrudes bottom left can be tucked in with an anchor pin or Amish pin to make it look a little more polished (if you so desire/can be bothered!).

Neoma
November 30th, 2009, 09:14 AM
Thank you for the instructions, Tabitha! :flowers: Not to hijack the thread, but it's amazing to me how many variations on wrapped buns there are. This one is similar to one that I do, except that the hand starts out under the pony instead of on top of it.

OK, I tried this. My hair is fine and waist length, so I have to wrap the excess length around the base of the bun a few times before I insert the pencil. It looks great, and takes about 10 seconds. Thanks, Tabitha!

TimberstoneTurnings's Shop Announcement

********** NOTICE **********
Effective 12/2/2009 we can no longer accommodate custom design requests until maybe after the first of the year. We're happy to customize any of the existing hair stick styles with selected woods and gemstones, however new design requests will be put on hold. With the Holidays approaching, and inventory which needs to be maintained, all combined with the fact that I have a "real" full time job, there just simply aren't enough hours in the day for me to dedicate much time to new design requests.

He deserves to be successful, he is so nice to deal with and does such amazing work.

My hair might be a little too short to accommodate beautiful buns like many of you have, but the stick I ordered is one of the shortest I've seen on his site, and I'm sure I'll grow into it anyway.

It should be on my front porch when I get home from work today! And I'm going out for birthday drinks downtown with a friend, so I hope I can figure out how to wear it for the special occasion!

I'll put up photos as soon as I have it and know how to use it, haha. For now, this is what I'm sitting at work (on the computer, gah!) getting excited about:

I just sent him a request for a pink ivory Chloe with a malachite or green turquoise "vine" trailing up the stick and a lapis butterfly on the finial. When he's better, I hope he can make this one for me. In my mind's eye, it's beautiful! :D

Hmm, I don't know if he'll be able to do the butterfly on the finial. I wanted a gemstone inlay on the finial as well, but he told me that would surely snap off since the finial is only 1/8th of an inch around at the thinnest point. I had to rethink my design without any finial inlay. Just so you know.

Hmm, I don't know if he'll be able to do the butterfly on the finial. I wanted a gemstone inlay on the finial as well, but he told me that would surely snap off since the finial is only 1/8th of an inch around at the thinnest point. I had to rethink my design without any finial inlay. Just so you know.Thank you, Wavelength. :(

Thank you, Wavelength. :(

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Don't take my word for it though -- check with Doug to make sure. I'm just repeating what he told me.

The BigSky stick whent into the hair great and stuck together BUT when you try and wind the hair round to do a wrap bun the stick bends. The magnets are strong enoough to hold the sends together but not straight when it has hair pressure on it. I sent a series of photos to Doug I'll load them up later so you can see what I mean.

Ahh, yep, I can see that happening. In other words, the tension of the hair pulls the magnets apart when you try to wrap it around the stick? That's too bad, it was a nice idea. Looking forward to seeing the pics.

I hope his injury heals fast! His inlays really are so cute! I'm not a cat fan but that's adorable for the cat fans out there.

Too bad about the Big Sky stick not working out. It looks pretty clever. Maybe if they could screw together like more traditional double kanzashi (?) style hairstick it would work out? Or one end of the stick bulb part thingy.

Trollkjerring, I've just seen your ginkgo stick ... :thud: it's so gorgeous!

Neoma, Doug has just posted a Butterfly stick (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=35977057), that seems to be the Chloe shape and works very well so I do hope he can do something like what you were wanting (not sure what you meant by the finial? I took finial to mean the top, because I always thought finials were on the top not the bottom of things, but it's just occured to me you might have meant the arrowpoint).

Didn't Doug make the most wonderful gingko leave inlays for me? I am so looking forward to get this stick:)

Of course there will be action pics from both of my sticks!

I received my Chloe style hairstick in the mail yesterday (it's African Blackwood with inlaid mother of pearl). It was waiting for me when I got home from work. I'm actually really surprised that I can get my short hair to stay up using it... and I know it'll only be more fun to use as it grows longer! Yay! :)

I just saw the hummingbird ones. He wasn't kidding when he said in his description that he used his entire arsenal of gemstones. Gorgeous!

PS: And the gingko one is beautiful, trollkjerring. Thanks for the link, AngelInDisguise!

Only on the newer ones with detailed inlays, though.

Ya, you know, I am not that interested anymore due to the price. I mean, a Chloe went for $30 before, and that is about all I am willing to spend. Beyond that, it had better be mighty special or a custom piece.

I like the new inlays though and the designs, but all I will spend for those is about $40.

I think the Chloe is still reasonable priced>

This listing is for $25, and shipping is usually $5.

I have bought three sticks from him and after the first of the year I will probably buy at least one more. I cannot sing his praises enough, and it's not just because of the pretty work he does.
