I have just discovered a very interesting website that has loads of photos of retro hairstyles. This link will take you to a page that shows a few interesting 1960s updo diagrams. The four or five diagrams at the top of the page would work for APL or shorter hair, I believe.

Wow, I've been wearing the psyche knot this entire time and didn't even know it! Except I don't wear the band and barrette. I've just always called it my quick, messy bun. :)

Oh wow, thank you! My just past shoulder length hair will be easily styled with these vintage styles for special occasions!
(I figure a vintage dress and hairstyle for a semi-formal school dance is stylish)

This is one of my favorite blogs.
I'm sure it says nothing about me as a person that one of my topic folders in my rss reader is "hair."

Gee, it must have been hard work doing your hair in the sixties. I never spend more than 5 minutes on mine in the morning.

Weirdly worded on some, but I'm sure we can adapt them to make sense. Good for playing Mad Men dress-up.

And did anyone notice that LHC was linked, here (http://beautyisathingofthepast.blogspot.com/2008/12/link-1920s-shingle-look-for-long-hair.html) for the shingles do that member Sunny did?

I browsed through all of the archives on hair styling. Clearly most of are for shorter styles, but I must say that I LOVE this ponytail style (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_p_VRZY3jolk/SlicVnKvzcI/AAAAAAAABFo/6cn4zJqBMGg/s1600-h/RomanticPonytail001.jpg) as it looks on the bottom pic.
And this one (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p_VRZY3jolk/SlicVRXZnJI/AAAAAAAABFg/1mU162ePfPA/s1600-h/RomanticPonytail002.jpg)
Some of these are really cute (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p_VRZY3jolk/SD-VhP-9kqI/AAAAAAAAAIU/2fqgSkGD298/s1600-h/40waystowear.jpg), but she expresses regret she doesn't have a clearer, larger pictures and no instructions.

JulietteWell we didn't have the internet or cable TV back then :p I did a wet set every single night of the week when I was in high school. The brush/comb out and styling didn't take all that long in the morning. The eye make up with the patent leather eye liner took a while :D

It looks to me that it can not be done with very long hair, I tried it and I have too much lenght for this one.

Thank you for sharing these! I really need more ways to wear mine up in more interesting ways!! I have noticed once it gets very long, ones choices seem to be fewer. I will enjoy the journey instead if wishing my hair were longer!! Thanks again!! :)

I managed a modified one! :)
I didn't have a hair tie on hand so I used a scrunchie I found in my drawer, you can see it sticking out one side.
I used one hair pin to secure the top.
My hair is mostly waist with bits of taper at hip.
I looped the scrunchie around twice, there was slack for a third go round, but I left half my length like a looped pony before putting the end through.
The remaining ends are in a loose cinnabun on top of the scrunchie-pony.
The loop of hair kind of turned/fell/twisted sideways, that's what gives it the slightly twisted look on the bottom loop of hair.
I have gel in my hair, so the one flower pin at the top may be all that's needed due to the tacky texture.

This would be better done with a real elastic pony tail holder than a crunchie, and probably needs more pins.
