View Full Version : Two years of growth! (Encouragement for shorties!)

Two years ago this month I got my last big haircut to an ultra-short pixie.

I hated it and wanted my long hair back. I decided to hop back on the LHC forums for encouragement soon afterwards and began the journey.
Here is one of the first length shots I took from the back in January of 2008:

Here is my hair as of two weeks ago (October 2009) with hair straightened by the hairdresser after my first trim in two years:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=502&pictureid=51544
In that time I have had one trim (just before the last photo) and she took off about an inch at the most and evened it all out. I put the decent growth down to good genes, healthy eating, tying it up and forgetting about it, and investing in hairtoys so that I could focus on something else apart from getting it cut.
My goal is now about hip length, and I should be there in the next couple of years. It is very exciting, and I'm thankful for the LHC with all of your encouragement and tips (and enabling :p ).
Thanks, guys! :grouphug:

Very pretty hair! It's grown out quite well. I know how hard it is to grow from a pixie.

Wow! You're hair looks great and I can't believe how much it has grown in two years. This actually gives me a lot of encouragement. If I can just stop cutting my hair then maybe it can be as long as yours is in less than 2 years!

I'm so glad you posted this. That is a lot of growth for two years!!! It does give me hope as I like you was dumb and cut my hair. (Oops not saying you were dumb but that's how I feel about what I did.) Seeing this helps. I know when I get back to my original 29" I will do a happy long hair dance!!! My goal is still waist but to get back to where I chopped I will finally get over the stupid decision I made.

WOW!! You give me hope for my almost shoulder length hair. It has been almost shoulder length for a very long time, but I think now that I finally leaving it alone, it is making some progress in length.

Beautiful hair!
That is encouraging...considering I want mine a bit shorter than yours is...perhaps it won't take forever. :)

Thank-you for all of the lovely compliments, everybody! I appreciate all of them. :)
All of your support has meant a lot. Between all of you and my husband (who the other day pointed at my jeans hemline and said sheepishly that he would like to see it get to at least that length) it has been nice having a group of people who understand the desire to have long and healthy hair rather than the latest salon chop-fried look.
Beautiful, Inspiring! Congrats!
Yes, a hairtoy purchase is more fun than a haircut!
Looking at the collection, it seems that I have been having a lot of fun over the past two years. ;) Actually, the amount I have spent on hairtoys is extra motivation to grow, because my husband would kill me if I then went and chopped it all off anyway. :p

I know what you mean about being dumb, don't worry. ;) I'm past the point I was at when I chopped it short, so I know how happy you will be when you get there, too.
At the time it seemed like a good idea but it took so long to get back there that in the end I'm sorry I just didn't baby it, tie it up and leave it alone for 6 months. Live and learn, I guess.
I have found a hairdresser who said (when I went for my first trim in two years) that if I came to her with hair like mine and told her I wanted it all cut off, she would encourage me to do other things first to make it more manageable. I wish I had gone there two years ago! :p

Yes, leaving it alone was the best decision that I made. I had tried growing it out twice before and going to the salon regularly, but it fed my addiction to straightening irons and slowed the growth down so much that I got bored. Join the "wear it up for a year" group/thread and you won't be sorry. :D

Ooh, I have a question for you ... during the time you were growing your hair did you use the blowdryer to get it to behave or did you just suffer through it? I'm wondering because it looks like you might have a similar hairtype to my own. My hair is kind of strong willed. I'm thinking of just growing my hair out as is and delaying getting a trim for at least 6 months or more if I can stand it. How did you deal with your hair when it wasn't long enough to put up?

I have only straightened it three times or so in the past two years, and have never blow-dried it, as this would have dried it out and caused a lot of damage.
If you have a look in my albums you can see my natural hair texture. I would definitely recommend not getting a trim for as long as possible. I tied it up from the second I could, even with loads of clips and things. Before that I used headbands to keep it back and a little bit of product to get it to behave. Headband + product can be helpful! I also wore hats on some days when I wasn't at work/in clinical situations. That said, if blowdrying it a little helps you avoid trimming, then so be it. I'm sure there are members on here who blowdry, too. Good luck!
