It's amazing Dessi how long your hair has become since I started to follow your journey growing your hair and it's lovely as always, but I have to say that I get a bit envious as 117 cm is just about classic on me, it's what you get having a long torso and short legs. :D
I feel it will just have to look just gorgeous on you, with the beautiful texture and colour of your hair.
What a beautiful photo, your waves gives me some serious hair envy!
Here is a photo of me from the other day, I had it down for once walking home from an appointment and you can see the braid waves that I got from sleeping with my hair in braids again just like I did sometime when I was little.

Apparently having a baby is good for the hair. ;) Ever since my darling daughter was born (seven months ago, I can´t believe it´s been that long already) she´s kept me so busy that I haven´t had any time for my hair. It gets washed once or twice a week and lives in a bun the rest of the time. Yesterday I finally found some time to do a much delayed trim (I was suppose to trim every month to maintain at mid-thigh length...) and discovered that my hair was barely an inch shy of knee length!
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o33/maria_asa/Mobile%20Uploads/71c97af4-5611-429d-b325-fccd815c1e98_zpsrxjulasd.jpg (http://s116.photobucket.com/user/maria_asa/media/Mobile%20Uploads/71c97af4-5611-429d-b325-fccd815c1e98_zpsrxjulasd.jpg.html)
I trimmed of about half the growth, just over 2", because I just couldn´t decide if I wanted to go on to knee length or trim back to mid-thigh again. (Bad picture, Emma needed my attention and there was no time to take a better one. The short pieces on the side are just strands that lay strange and thus look shorter.)

As always when I trim I do miss the length (funny how 52" of hair can feel short. :D) but the ends feel really good.
And just because, ;) here´s my new boss:

Yay, Congratulations, jrmviola and Agnes Hannah! :joy:
I'm wondering - and maybe this question has already been addressed up-thread, but I didn't see it :flower: - how exactly is knee length measured from the back? It's just that there are 2 "markers" for the knee in the back, kind of this shape ( ) - only horizontal. Is it knee when it passes the second marker or the first? I've passed the first marker, but I don't want to call knee yet, because it's not like the whole knee area is completely covered already... and, I must admit, partially because this thread seems to be so much more active than next milestone(s)... I love how much lively discussion is happening over here!

i remember a lot of talk about the Knee Zone a while back. i'd count anything in the knee zone to be knee since its so hard to find exactly. i think the knee bottom i'd call shin or something because calf moves. but i'm nowhere close so i'm sure i'd be more particular if it was in the realm of possibility.

Hello!
After waiting forever, I can finally dip my toes in this thread!! I made it to Classic!!
I've got very thin ends, so I'm planning to maintain until the end of this year, but then its onwards and downwards whether my ends have thickened up or not. :cheese:
I'm not sure if I can get past Fingertip, but I'm really hoping so.
Everyone's hair looks so amazing at these lengths! I just finished reading this *entire* thread (yes, from the first post on). It took a lot of late evenings and a lot of popcorn (yeah, I literally lounged on the couch eating popcorn and reading this thread) :cheese:
ETA: I have a very bad length shot in my album, and I can't seem to post it into threads from my phone. (It's a bad shot because you can barely see my ends against the horrendous plaid combo I'm wearing.)

Welcome all new classic mane people! Pour your drink of choice, the snack table is to your left.
I see knee at crease, too. But I'm an anatomy geek. So knee length marker, for me, is the popliteal fossa, where the femur meets the tib and fib. All my markers are posterior body.
Yeah, I'm a hoot at parties. ;)

^ A-ha, awesome! Somehow I saw 2 creases instead of 1 (sort of framing the knee). So if this popliteal fossa area (e.g. picture here (https://instruct.uwo.ca/kinesiology/222/Lab6/Lab6_Images/Fig8_popliteal_fossa.jpg)) is the marker, then knee milestone is higher than I thought. Great to know! :D

I was brushing knee but finally trimmed my ends and got to mtl again, it is hard to trim one's hair, no matter what method I use it always looks uneven, oh well, I started with a centimetre and when I noticed the unevenness ended up trimming 2 or 3 centimetres... It still does not look perfect but oh well. Wish my sister was around to trim it because I do not trust anyone but her to do it... Oh well maybe by the end of the year I will be at knee, who cares anyway, right?

I agree I wonder how much a braid would make it shrink?
neko_kawaii
May 5th, 2017, 09:17 PM
I noticed the other day that I had my braid tied off at classic with 6 inches or so of tassel.
Braid shrinkage is going to be correlated to thickness.
Xan
May 5th, 2017, 09:25 PM
That sounds pretty good still right about 3-4 inches shorter than knee. Guess you need a 5-6" longer than knee length hair to have a knee length braid. Perhaps I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. Lol

Every time I think I'd like to stop, it seems like a new goal length pops up. I was just thinking about this today how classic was my "ultimate" dream hair. Aaaand, somehow, here I am, past classic.
I think I just like having my length goals. Not having them would probably make me feel like "Now what?"
I think I'd like to give knee a try. :p

Meanwhile I'm in the mid-thigh abyss. And there is no hole in my hair, it's just the hood of the seal-blouse :) I think the place where the middle of the "tail" starts is knee on me.

Love the seal!
I've been admiring your hair in this thread for a while now. :blossom:
So my plan has been to maintain at Classic for all of this year, but I'm just not sure. I'm not thrilled with my thin ends at this particular length, but after reading through this entire thread and the next over the past month, I've realized I like the look of thinner ends and fairytales at the longer lengths, especially Knee and beyond.
I'm also not sure if my hair will thicken up at this length. My see-through ends used to start around MBL and now don't start until just below Hip, so I think maybe I'll get at least a little thickness moving down. But I'm not sure if I really want to wait around for that, as it's taken around 4 years for that to happen. I know I can get to Fingertip, and possibly 6 inches past, based on how much I have a record of trimming in the years leading up to my first major shed, and how long my hair was at that time, and adding in the 6 inches of growth I didn't get during two years of worse health than usual. So I think I can get to at least mid-thigh if my health improves.
I know I can maintain and thicken up my ends a little. But I got to wondering if that would create unnecessary thinness later on. My reasoning is that each trim takes away from the potential terminal length of each hair, so even if I'm thickening things up in the short term, maybe I'm shooting myself in the foot as far as reaching terminal with any sort of speed. Maybe maintaining will create an artificial taper when I decide to grow past Classic, as whichever of my oldest hairs could have done so will be stuck shorter due to having been trimmed there after entering the resting phase of their cycle? I'm not sure how long the resting phase is. But either way, I'm then stuck at a shorter length until those trimmed hairs have shed out and younger hairs have grown down far enough to take their place.
Maybe that effect isn't really as dramatic as I'm making it sound. But I've been pondering that a lot lately.
Regardless, I guess my dilemma is, do I really want to maintain this year or just keep going?:undecided:ponder:

A question: How far apart are classic length and fingertip on you? They are only 1.5in apart on me, which seems like hardly any.
Fingertip on me would about mid-thigh length. With me being 5ft 1" tall. Mid-thigh length is my goal.

Congratulations on reaching pass classic length!:) Your hair is amazingly gorgeous as always! I have an aunt and a cousin that used to have hair that long on my dad's side of the family, and I'm trying to grow my mine out that long or a little bit longer. Like, mid-thigh length. Hopefully, someday soon it will happen. I have a good feeling that it will. Yeah, I know the feeling of wanting to stop but can't...lol it just keeps on growing. I think knee length would be gorgeous on you!!!

I took a length shot today because I haven't checked since February- and I am just at 44"! Wooohoo!
I don't actually know how long MTL is on me, but I'd like to grow there as my next goal.
Knee seems like a long way off, but I think it's like 53"-54" or something on me, and to be quite honest, I'm not sure if knee is going to be right for me.
But we'll see!!

Your photos are lovely! I think as a wavy, your hair is not as curly 3b as mine is... When/how do you detangle? Thanks...:)
I would also appreciate it if any Classic to Knee members on this thread who have fine/3b/iii curly hair? I would love to know how/when you detangle so I can avoid the breakage if/when my hair grows back too TBL and beyond. Thanks!! Curly fine hair at longer lengths can add a degree of detangling difficulty and am hoping my breakage doesn't happen again. Thanks so much!!

I suffer the same and I feel your pain :grouphug:
I can't wear braids instant tangles which is weird. Combs are evil for me.
They caused horrific breakage. You can see the damage in my 2009 photo in my albums. I had to chop all the way up to apl. In 2015 I again cut right up to chin. Never ever again!
I find my tangle teezer and wet brush help me. Also shea's moisture kids detangler is good for me. It has slippery elm in.
And the LCO method too. Oils are best friends expect coconut oil. Sleeping in a Satin bonnet too.
My hair when it's having a bad day it can get super tangles:wail: and I have to be super careful detangling.

I can feel your pain with the breakage. I have struggled with breakage for years too, it is hard with curly fine hair! I have very similar hair type to you; my longer hair develops into 3a curls, but my shorter length hair can go into 3b and even some 3c ringlets (I think). My hair tips are about knee length when stretched currently, though most of my hair is about mid-thigh length. I have tried many different things in hopes of preventing damage, though I haven't completely found a solution yet. I am still trying to learn and figure this out too. :) In hair care I usually do the WCC and LOC method.
What I found that helped me some:
Stopped using heavy wide tooth combs, especially the ones with thick teeth (some of my hairs are just too fine and snap like nothing, so even gently going through with a wide tooth comb or my fingers can snap hairs, so I have to use something with a softer plastic that has some give to it that slips out easy to detangle if I do, like a softer plastic wide tooth pick with narrow diameter teeth or tangle teezer).
I very rarely leave my hair length out to curl, since it is such a pain to detangle at the end of the day. I only do this on special occasions and I make sure to wash it the day before with a lot of conditioner. Even leaving it out in a braid (which I do most often) can make it hard to detangle sometimes, especially on days where my curls try escaping the braid and wrap around each other...sometimes I can't even unbraid my hair because they have matted so badly!
I think the easiest way for me to detangle normally is when my hair is just loose from a bun, or damp, conditioned, or has a lot of oils in it. I don't like to detangle when it is soaking wet, since I think it could hurt my hair that way, though I also try not to detangle too much when it is very dry either without something added (like oils), because it catches together and knots easily. I have to really focus on my ends and make sure that they get enough moisture, since they are older and dry out easier and will stick together and snap off without the moisture and slip. I also have to really focus on getting oils/conditioner around the very thickest area of my hair (near back of head and down), otherwise it matts and becomes very hard to detangle.
I think with curly hair it might go through a lot of different phases and transitions as it grows longer, or at least it did with mine. Sometimes some things seem to work, and then the next week it seems like those no longer work and then something else starts working better, so keep hanging in there! I think getting enough moisture is the key for curly hair. I find that when I wash it more frequently (every two days, or more), with a lot of conditioner (WCC method), it becomes easier for me to manage, even though the weight and wet hair can be annoying, but when it becomes slightly dry /still damp it is so silky and easy for me to comb through it.
Three or so years ago I went through a time where my hair was shedding so badly (handfuls) and I also had a lot of breakage, that I really hated it and I was so miserable about it that I chopped back to just above classic, after that I went through so many stalls in growth that I became very depressed about my hair and I thought that it would never grow out again. This last year though it really started to thicken again and started growing again, and this year it has been a lot healthier, so in spite of everything it has turned out alright.
I hope that some of this can help, I know everyone's hair is different, so some of these things might not work for you, but hope you find something that helps!!! Best wishes to you in your hair growing journey! :flowers:

Thank you for the advice. I do something similar (both the WCC and LOC methods). :) My hair is very frizz prone, some days are better than others depending on the weather, the longer it gets, the more a mind of its own it seems to get these days. :D I try to moisturize it a lot, though I sometimes am lazy and don't do enough, so I need to keep on top of it more. Hopefully it will become more tamed soon.

I suppose one advantage of a long torso and large bottom is short thighs (I have 11 inches between classic and mid-knee/knee crease). I also seem to have short arms, because classic to FTL is only 1.5 to 2 inches.

Dark 40 I have checked your pics and I am curious, did you bleach your hair blonde in the past? It looks like you have curly, coarse hair, it might have been quite the transition, how is your texture? It looks thick! Love your picture in the chair, anyway, now you have to start a album here where we can see your hair and progress better.

It may not be as straight like yours but it is as thick! My hair texture right now is relaxed. I get my hair straightened by a relaxer every 2 or 3 months. Throughout my hair journey I have always believed in stretching out my relaxer treatments. Thank you so much for liking my picture in the chair!:) Yes, hopefully soon I will take some more recent photos of my hair and make an album on here so that you guys can see what progress I have made.

I bet it wurly from the waist down, and that someone can see it. Oh yes, I will have to get someone to help me take some recent photos and post them on here. Yes, I know that it would be useful for whomever may have the same texture as I do. I had a high school classmate that had hair to her hips. Or, it might had been BCL, and it was the same texture as mine. Which is curly and thick!!! And a year later after we had been good friends at the beginning of her last year in high school she came to school with it pin-straight!!! Like, she had gotten it chemically relaxed or straightened!! I was in total shock!!! It was gorgeous!!!

If your measurements are accurate, it will take you much longer than that. It took me 6 years to get from chin to FTL+, and I only trimmed about 6 inches in total during that time.
Oh my I know what you mean and I was saying everywhere not longer than knee and now I am considering calf. Nuts!
I'm less annoyed about it now than I was before my trim, but FTL was when I started getting annoyed at my hair and finding it too long, so that's why I'm hesitant. I guess it will depend whether I find new ways to deal with it. But I like wearing my hair down sometimes, so that sort of limits length.

I can relate to this. My hair was getting too thin at FTL so I cut it back, and I've enjoyed the trim. I'm back to classic now, though, so FTL isn't that far off! Here's to hoping I can make it there with a thicker hemline this time around.

Finally back over here since my big chop to get the bleach out and slow growing back.
http://i.imgur.com/Cpq7J3a.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/JW2YH5F.jpg
Classic is ~43" on me, I am 42.75 no matter how many times I measure LOL. Close enough. It LOOKS classic.
I have been to FTL before (45"). I will get there again. My hair grows about 1/3" a month so very slowly. Sigh.
Like others, after TBL my hair gets hard to wear down and I find it annoying. I am going to grow until I graduate in May next year (yes, I am an older college student) so I will surpass FTL and 45", my personal hair length record.
I'd like to go to knee but my hair is getting so thin at the ends already.
Hip to TBL is best for length/updos/and wear-down-ability for me. There is a good chance I will cut back after graduation. Knee length would be cool, though. If I get there (50") I could maybe maintain and thicken. I am not sure. I don't think I would be at term judging by how it is at this length and my FTL from the past.

I just hit classic and DH asked me what my official TLHC length is. I told him Classic. He said...is that the same as mid-thigh? I explained, and he thought my hair was like a foot longer than it is. I am still trying to figure it out.
He also sees you moving around and it is more noticeable during the times where you look up and cheat those markers. Like, wow-thats down to your knees when you do that-must be really long. I know i notice my hair more as it accidentally brushes my legs than i do just sitting around at classic. Plus, i chopped back a foot from classic to bcl and NOone noticed. Anything past waist is like ignorably long for most people

My poor DH has been sucked into my hair journey since I joined the forum (8 years ago). He has measured for me, taken pictures, but I do everything myself now. He really doesn't care what I do with my hair. I could shave it off and he'd be fine with it. He does know the markers, it must be JBEs theory below...

I kind of don't measure at all anymore, WaitingSoLong, definitely less frequently the longer it gets. :agree: Also, I don't see my full length in the mirror, so I rarely realize that growth continues... I tend to notice growth a bit more in shower, due to the added weight of water. My hair even reaches the floor now somehow when I wash it bending forward. Definitely didn't expect something like that to happen so early. Either my hair is getting longer or my back is getting more flexible.

How often do you all measure? I measure less frequently the longer my hair gets. I measure once every 3 months and then update my charts.
When I first joined LHC, I tried monthly measuring. Being short, I quickly decided on landmarks, because those were getting met, even though inches were fewer.
Once in the long dark teatime of the thigh, I started measuring as I remembered, since landmarks are few.
Still not measuring often. Quarterly might be right.
I'll measure if I've forgotten my number, or if I want to guess a month that I might hit knee, without trimming.

Your hair looks amazing! I think it will look beautiful at knee length! Keep growing!:) I think you can use products to thicken your hair and ends. Like, Herbal Essence Shampoo. I have fine/thick hair, and I use that shampoo all of the time. Or, I would use Pantene Pro-V Moisture Balance Fusion Shampoo. It thickens my hair up pretty well!!!

Sarah, I remember when I was classic and you were still growing out to classic and could hardly wait. I have cut back to hip, and you have kept growing. And now almost at knee. Wow! Amazing! :applause

Yes, I remember being so desperate to reach classic :) Classic to knee doesn't seem to be taking very long, and I'm happy about that. It seemed to take forever to reach classic!

Thank you! Yes, it's growing! :happydance:

New profile pic! It looks and feels a bit longer than classic but it really isn't. Still, I am hoping to achieve "can I call this FTL" by year end.
