Everyone's length pictures look so nice. For once I might try to take a length shot in the next week. I'm curious to see how much longer it will look than it did 2 months ago, which was the last time I saw a somewhat proper idea of it from the back. It feels like it's grown a fair bit since then, so my curiosity might get the best of me :p.

As for the trimming... you seem to have practically no taper, so I think trimming should be relatively easy to minimize, if that's what you want. ;) When ends get very knotty, tangly, what seems to work for many people are:

1) clarifying to remove product build-up + deep moisturizing treatment (e.g. SMT);

2) chelating to remove mineral deposits;

3) adding more oils, silicones and other ingredients that provide slip, tweaking routine to add more oils, like adding pre-poo oiling, LOC or oil rinses;

4) for some people, hydrolyzed protein treatments (like gelatin masks, silk protein drops, etc) can actually help the ends a lot (but this one is more of an ad hoc, YMMV kind of thing).

According to the gals in the 'post your hair photos here' thread I can actually claim classic now. What say you? I still feel like I need another couple of centimetres until I'm officially there, but maybe that's just the regular 'my hair feels shorter than it is' thing?

I was 5'4 for so long that I forget that I had a late growth spurt in my early twenties and now I'm 5'6. My legs are still short, but my torso got longer.

Clearly, at TBL, you learn that your hair has the potential to loo-dive, and beyond you adjust. :)

I had something similar happen in the front because I was trying to avoid it happening in the back, thank goodness it was post-shower! :lol:

Plus, I also colored it back to my natural color so no more hair dye! Hopefully, this will allow me to thicken up my hemline since it was looking a little scraggly and before I know it, I'll be back at classic...only 3 inches!

I've been dealing with and learning from the unexpected shirt-lifting, hair-diving-into-buttcrack in the bathroom issue for about a month now. Very strange to get used to!

The past few days, though, I've been accidentally buckling my hair into my belt! (Im growing out a slight V cut with layers so my hair in front is an inch or so behind the rest). Very exciting stuff, but so easy to get paranoid about damaging your ends, man....now I fully understand why the super-length LHCers stick to braids and buns. And braided buns. :p

Also, every time I go to put my hands in my front sweatshirt pocket this winter, I end up tucking most of my hair said pocket. Very annoying, but then i just end up playing with my ends inside the pocket....lol.

I need to wear updos more often...but I have large forehead....which is why i took the plunge and cut bangs last week. It was the perfect solution to soften those updos so I'm not tempted to wear my hair down so often . :)

Eve - I love your bangs! They don't suit me though sadly which is such a shame. I got them cut in once a few years ago and was universally told by everyone that I looked better without them :( They are now hanging around at about waist. I'm popping in to say that I'm leaving this thread because I did something crazy today! :o I cut off around 30-35 cm of hair, and it's currently around waist length. I'm so excited! I've been unhappy with my hair for so long, so this feel great. If I want to have tbl/classic length again, it'll only take 2-3 years to grow it back. :D

Thanks! :flower: I have for the most part. My only naughty things are blowing it out in the winter, which if I do is on low and at most, about 3 or 4 times throughout the winter. I wear it up at work, to keep it out of the way, and it's only down when I'm sleeping or out with hubby. I use oils, hair vitamins, natural hennindigo. It is what it is.

Thank you!! I just thumbed through your album- you're right, we totally have a very simliar hairtype (and length) and similar but slightly different henna shade! I don't think your hair looks frizzy and damaged, I think it's beautiful :D :blossom:

I cut it myself. Hairdressers are scary! :p I tried the ponytail on forehead-method first, but something went horribly wrong. I did it the same way I had seen others do it on youtube, but I ended up with some hair at bcl and the rest at waist/bsl. I have no idea what happened, but it looked awful. I fixed it using Feye's method for U- or V-hemline (can't remember which) and cut the rest of my hair up to waist+. Some layers look a bit wonky, but I think they'll be alright when they grow a bit.

I am so close to classic, I just want to get there already! The very tips reach classic when stretched, and is a bit past classic when wet. But it's going to take som time before I can call it classic when dry. The shrinkage! :brickwall Rant, rant! I know I shouldn't complain, as my hair is relatively straight, and there isn't that much chrinkage to speak of compared to others..

Also, for what it's worth, the average head of hair grows 0.5"/month (or 6 inches per year).

When I wash my hair and rinse the hair with putting my head slightly back - I can clearly feel my hair under my butt....... Damn the dry hair shrinkage ;) But this means I am on the way now... it is still lots to grow, but at least I can feel in shower that it is close :D :joy:

It's not my natural color. I have very dark brown hair but don't suit to my pale skin and i love myself in golden blonde;) Now i dyed only new hair and one on year all of it;)

My grow rate is super slow... with the small trim at a New Year I got only about 3,5-4 inch of growth in a year. I didn't seem to get any stalls, it just grows that slow :D But I do not really stres about it. It grows - and that is all that matters , and I know many who's hair would never grow as long as my allready has.

ArchAngelin, your hair looks so shiny and healthy and natural! I would never have guessed, that it isn't real! Do you use any specific methodes to get the golden shine ?

My grow rate is super slow... with the small trim at a New Year I got only about 3,5-4 inch of growth in a year. I didn't seem to get any stalls, it just grows that slow :D But I do not really stres about it. It grows - and that is all that matters , and I know many who's hair would never grow as long as my allready has.

ArchAngelin, your hair looks so shiny and healthy and natural! I would never have guessed, that it isn't real! Do you use any specific methodes to get the golden shine ?

Growth is an average of 0.5 inches a month apparently - depends on how many inches there are between Hip and Classic for you! :)
Butif you aren't at BCL/TBL yet, my guess would be maybe 2 years?

I'd go for TBL first, to be honest. You're not likely to reach classic from hip in a year's time unless you have double the growth "regular" people have. Normally you get, like DS said, half an inch a month.

Hi all you awesome people, I'm back in this thread after trimming off a great deal of mechanical damage during last year.
The result of 2013, a year when I wasn't in a good place and didn't have it in me to take care of my hair properly.

On a good note I feel I finally have a routine that works well for my hair, a good washing routine, keeping it up and how I detangle and my ends finally looks and feels okay again, a big improvement from a year ago even though I am still working on thickening up my ends.

I have been microtrimming about once a month using this tutorial since September last year.
As my hair was in such steep V I'm trying to slowly to work myself towards more of a U-shaped hemline with a more blunt cut as the end goal.

Im going to try and see if I can cut back on the frequency of my trims, see if I can gain some length, but I'm doing S&D regularly and I think I will need to keep trimming to not end up with my ends thinning too much again.

Otherwise I co-wash about once a week first washing it using a Swedish brand called Neutral and using Tresemmé Vibrant Naturals in my lenghts.

The big trouble I have had is to find a good way of wearing my hair at night.
Worn it in a simple English braid for years and then for the last year I have braiding it using a paranda, as I thought using a hairtie around my ends was a contributing cause for my ends sad state.

I finally realized that it was the braid itself that was the problem, the cause for the frizz of my ends was the tiny braidwaves my ends got, since the end of my braid was so thin due to my fairytale ends.
That was why my ends turned to a frizzy mess and tangled so easily, with a lot of breaks as the result.

So I talked it over with a very good friend of mine that's also a longhair and she have had the same problem, keeping her hair braided too often, also making her hair frizzy and causing breaks all over.
What she have done for the last 3 years or so is to wear her hair in a Nautilusbun at night that she slides down her length, so her hair is loose nearest to her head and her scalp gets some rest during the night.

It has made her hair gain so much length compare to before, when her go to updo in daytime was an English braid as well and after realizing that she just started to wear buns instead.
She has gone from about midthigh to about 10 cm from the floor when her hair is wet, since she started doing that. :)

So I have been bunning my hair at night for the last couple of weeks and I feel a difference already, my ends feels so much smoother and is so much more easy to detangle because of it.

Hopefully I will reach classic again this year, but no matter what I'm glad that my ends are looking so much better.

My waves are really prominent at times, but has a will if their own, so I am happy for those good hairdays when they really show.
I was at classic and hope to be soon again, with a more solid hemline then before, it was worth it to me cutting it back.

Tonight I got my sister to trim an inch off my ends. I'm very happy with the results. I haven't had a trim since last May, so it felt good to make the ends even more blunt than they were before, and help reduce my braid taper.

Took a length shot this morning. I just washed my hair yesterday, and I've been using a shea butter curl lotion and moisturizing/oiling a ton more since I last took a photo in October..... I know it's longer because I can feel it brushing against my butt, especially when it's wet, but it doesn't look much longer! Though it's definitely got more defined waves this morning than it did, so I think much of my gained length is pulled up. Maybe some day it will all be the same length, but to level it out now I'd have to chop half of it off!

I've only done a few micro trims and s&d, and cut about an inch around December in a futile attempt to even my tails out a little (you can see how well that worked!)

I am someone who would absolutely have grown floor length if it had been possible (and I know it didn't work) but with all the care tips here I hope I can nail classic and improve the condition of the length.

I think it's understandable that people are tempted to compare themselves, but honestly if you're the type of person who wants hair that is not only long, but healthy (etc.) then it will take considerably longer to achieve than someone who is simply growing their hair and doesn't cut it. Either way, long hair isn't something that happens quickly, so I just try to grow my hair however I want to grow it, and try not to worry too much about what other people are doing :)

Good luck with getting to classic length. I'm sure you'll pick up a few things that will help improve the health, and in turn length of your hair. 2 inches is definitely achievable :)

I don't get that at all. Everyone has their story and their journey and it might at one time have been very difficult for them to grow past a certain length as well, so I don't compare for that reason.

I don't get jealous of these folks because I think of how much better my hair will look when it gets to that length than theirs because I trim and take care of it. I know several people like this in real likfe, even though they never cut it they dont grow much past tialbone or classic because they always wear is down and dont think about it rubbing on stuff and the ends are really fuzzy/ugly. So try to tell yourelf that "you'll show them how its done" lol.

Of course I do wish mine was as long, but not in the same condition... So no I'm not jealous of them. I do feel a bit jealous when I see extremely well taken care of hair in a hair type i could never have though. I dont know how to stop myself wishing I had someone elses hair when they have perfectly straight silky classic length hair

The average growth rate is ~0.5'' a month, so if your hair grew 1'' in 2 months, you have an average growth rate, and Classic in less than half a year away (if it's ~2'' away and you don't trim) or a bit longer if you microtrim somewhere in between... If you got this far, I'm sure you'll make it to Classic too :)

I get less breakage that way and can preserve length! Silicones for the win... truly!

I'm at a good point now where i can admire super longer hair, but do not envy it. I think "ooh pretty, mine will get there some day too." And i am one of those who wears it down and it just grows. haha I'm not going to make my wait take that much longer just because the racer ends are showing. Patience comes in many forms. Benign neglect is a good one for hair.

My hair texture though. ugh. It always looks awful in the not curly-but-not straight either department. So even when i do baby my hair it doesn't look any better than when i dont, and the fuss causes tangles.

I've noticed the drought has been hard on my ends in that the dry air is making them more prone to splitting, not to mention the static. I've had to switch back from organic shampoo/conditioner to 'cones just to help protect it. But I did find a plastic bowl large enough that I can dunk my head in it and have been figuring out how to apple-cider rinse, scalp shampoo, rinse, and condition without actually turning on the shower -- takes about five bowls worth of water. I lean over the tub -- the kitchen sink it too high -- with my hair hanging forward in front of me. Hard on my back, though, but my hair and I are doing our part!

Thanks for encouragement, but I seriously fear this is approx terminal for me since in the 20 years I in no way trimmed enough to lose length. The measurement I take in July will be much more interesting, providing a better comparison to see if my measurements are actually accurate. The good thing is that since I only ever ponytailed of braided in the past, it may have been a false terminal and nothing would make me happier. :-)

You should try using a paranda (if you don't already), that way your bleached ends won't have to bear the brunt of hair tie tension. 6" inches of actual fully bleached hair isn't too much. Do you plan on gradually trimming them off?

very nice! Is wool important? I would like something soft that is still grippy. All the yarn i have is acrylic so that would be too rough. :(
And thanks! I've got a 50% taper so far, so it feels really thin at the bottom. Glad thats not the impression. :D

And another question: my "bangs" are right along with my hem, so doesn't that mean it'll be much longer? I was under the impression that the front section stops early and the back is what grows longest. My taper comes from my nape/ears seems like. [so much fuzzies!] Or it might just be all over.

Oh my goodness, I usually never brush my hair when it's damp, but tonight I did a long conditioner soak and wanted to pretend for two minutes that I have straight hair, so I carefully brushed it out and... I'm officially at Classic When Wet!!!

I'm such a slow grower I kind of thought it would never happen! My ultimate goal is finger tip length with no taper, and now I have a little bit of faith that I might actually get there. :D

So, my hair is classic length, and the taper is finally growing out. It'll be another year maintaining at this length before I have no noticeable taper, and I said classic was as long as I would go... but now I'm wanting to grow to fingertip length. :justy: WHEN WILL IT END???

I'm graduating to this thread! I've recovered from my last haircut and am at tailbone again. I have never been longer than this length before. My mother and my sister have never had hair past this length either, so I've always thought of it as my own personal terminal length. I'm now going to see if I can go longer--not because I want longer hair, but just to see if I CAN. Is that weird? I actually really want to go in for my annual haircut so my hair isn't so heavy--but I will resist! If I go in for a cut and she takes me back to waist, I feel like I'll never know.

Welp, I think I'm joining you guys! I was at tailbone when my son was born but cut back to hip shortly after and maintained kinda between there and BCL for a year-ish but I'm back at tailbone now and feeling the itch to go for my original goal, which was Classic. A friend totally enabled me by pointing out that if I did grow that long, I'd have enough to donate (to somewhere reputable) once/if I got sick of it and wanted to go back to hip, so all the fun of what I've always thought of as "princess hair" (Classic +) and then a good deed if I cut back. I'm at 39 stretched now, and Classic is 44 stretched so not too far off, although it bounces up a ton with bun curls. I never wear it down anyway at the moment with a toddler around so it doesn't really matter how long it gets... Ha ha, I thought I'd escaped the urge to grow but it was just dormant I guess :laugh:

I have no idea what my growth rate is right now since I've been in hardcore benign neglect mode, I wash every few days, stretching washes as long as I can get away with, put up wet into a nautilus bun and only take it down for a few seconds to re do it, even wearing a loose high one for sleep (the plus side of never wearing it down is that I only need to comb before I wash). I used to get an inch - ish per month but since giving birth it's slowed to a crawl - I'm still breastfeeding 3 times a day so I wonder if it will pick up again once he's weaned? I hope so :( I think it will take a long time to get to Classic since I'll probably trim a couple of times along the way, I like fairytale ends on others but not so much on myself.

Meteor - Kind words, first of all. :) Thanks to a whole thread dedicated to my own mystery hair color issue, I'm officially settled on dark honey blonde or light chestnut. Right between 7G and 6G. I'd always hated my color, and thought it kind of ashy/cool-toned/mousy until I started taking LHC inspired photos and suddenly found very little cool or ashiness in there at all. Serious identity crisis ensued - I almost hennaed it red. But LHCers saved the day, and now I'm settled and happy with my color. I'd like to see yours!

I also found out today that I can finally do milkmaid braids! Before, my long tassels resulted in huge lumps, and the braids themselves were really too short to pin. Now, though, I don't have to pull the braids so tight, and they not only stay in place but cover the ends well.

Thanks, and I'd love to see a photo if you do try the braid on yourself. I'm not skilled enough to braid my own hair like that. My hands would completely get lost if I tried to braid the hair at the back of my head, but I'm so impressed that other people can do complex braids on themselves. Congrats on reaching classic!

actually i've noticed in the cycle of fashion that the spring after everyone chops to a fashionable influx of pixi styles, waist length is a summer-must-have and extensions come back. Great ploy for hair-manufacturers, and rewards those who dont follow trends! looong hair though...i have not seen. I guess its not do-able for most people's genes, and that kind of extensions are tacky and too expensive. :/

I definitely agree with your comment, for sure :agree: , except I suspect many people only *think* or are told that it's "not in their genes" to grow long. Really, I hear so many folks say they aren't able to grow longer than shoulder or whatever but when you probe, it turns out they are totally healthy but they get big trims/cuts... and quite frequently.

By the way, another salon trend I noticed resurges every year is that every spring people are "supposed" to get lighter foil/balayage highlights/ombre put in, and then every fall - get low-lights and get darker, richer dye and get glosses/glazes a shade darker. :lol: Ah, the beauty industry! Always trying to do what nature is pretty good at doing anyway. ;)

I know its been talked to death on this board, but people generally don't seem to get the fact that getting it cut every month = no lenght gain.
People ask me, like I guess they've asked all of you at some point: how did your hair get so looong? And when I answer that I stopped cutting it, they just can't believe it. No, it must be more, something else. And then they say that "well, my hair dresser tell me I have to get it cut at least every six weeks to keep it healthy." yeah, of course they tell you that, you pay their bills! (Note: not all hair dressers are like this of course)

Agree with you. Today was my wash day as well, and my hair got diffused (as it always does, every week) for about 4 to 5 min. I love the feel of freshly washed but *dry* hair!

Lapushka, how do you fold your beach towel on top of your head so that it won't be super-heavy? Is there a technique? :)
(I have to just drape my hair over a towel (after squeezing out extra water of course), because it's too heavy otherwise. :( )

Also, how do you manage to diffuse so extremely fast? :bigeyes: Or do you leave hair wet after 5 min blow-drying to let hair air-dry on its own after?

I don't like having a towel on my head; it's much too heavy. I use a long t-shirt to wrap my hair in when wet, but I only do this for about 20 minutes because my scalp doesn't enjoy being wet for extended periods. After that I try to wear it down for a bit, and then put it up in sections. At some stage I either damp bun or use my hair dryer on the cool setting. There aren't enough hours in the day to take my hair from wet to totally dry without a hair dryer.

I use two microfiber towels turned turbie twists.
I wrap my damp hair with one of them, then when it becomes wet; I take it off and wrap the second one. 30 min in total, I guess.
After that I air-dry for a couple of hours.

Lapushka, how do you fold your beach towel on top of your head so that it won't be super-heavy? Is there a technique? :)
(I have to just drape my hair over a towel (after squeezing out extra water of course), because it's too heavy otherwise. :( )

Also, how do you manage to diffuse so extremely fast? :bigeyes: Or do you leave hair wet after 5 min blow-drying to let hair air-dry on its own after?

Just the seam of the towel in the middle of my head and then it just falls down. Then it's a matter of twisting it and pulling it up. It is secured at the nape with a claw clip, otherwise it comes tumbling down.

My hair is in the towel 15-20 min. and that gets most of the wetness out. Then I airdry for 1h to 1h30 min., sometimes it's even 2h. I think because of the products in LOC the hair dries quite fast (and I've been known to need 8h). Then it is sectioned off for drying: top, back, 2 sides. Each side gets 30 sec., then hair is flipped to the side and randomly diffused here and there, flipped to the other side, same. It's all done in 4/5 min. By then my roots are pretty much dry, but the ends are still damp (but that doesn't matter so much to me).


I don't like having a towel on my head; it's much too heavy. I use a long t-shirt to wrap my hair in when wet, but I only do this for about 20 minutes because my scalp doesn't enjoy being wet for extended periods. After that I try to wear it down for a bit, and then put it up in sections. At some stage I either damp bun or use my hair dryer on the cool setting. There aren't enough hours in the day to take my hair from wet to totally dry without a hair dryer.

Cool. For me a shirt just won't soak up enough moisture. But maybe that's me. :)


I use two microfiber towels turned turbie twists.
I wrap my damp hair with one of them, then when it becomes wet; I take it off and wrap the second one. 30 min in total, I guess.
After that I air-dry for a couple of hours.

I'm at the point where a regular turbie no longer fits. :o No matter how the hair is folded. Woopsie. :lol:

I modified both of my microfiber towels in this way;
I took the towel and folded it in half lengthwise, than I stitched together the two halves of the short part, as a kind of hood.
When I put this hood on my head, the whole length of the towel is hanging down, almost to my thigh. So I can wrap all the hair easily.
It works better than a regular turbie and isn't too heavy. :grnbiggri

This is what I am experiencing and it is discouraging, especially the shedding part. I am sure the shedding is due to the excessive tangling (when detangling with conditioner in the shower) I am having with being at 34 inches and I am 3B. Do any curlygirls who have achieved TBL have any suggestions for less shedding during detangling? I'm not a curly girl, but I'd use conditioners with a lot of slip (silicones). I find them especially useful on longer hair.

I just wanted to point out that you might not actually be experiencing excessive shedding. Curls hold onto each other well, and the longer the curly strands are the more they hold on, so curly hair doesn't lose already-shed strands easily. Since curlies don't usually brush, they don't have that extra help removing the sheds either. I imagine it takes the extra slip of conditioner and the force of running water to help most of them move out.

If you're stretching washes also, you're likely just seeing several days' worth of sheds working their way out instead of 1 or 2 like you used to. And then if your hair is twice as long, the same number of shed strands will have twice the volume when gathered into a pile or ball.

There are a lot of factors that come together to make it seem like you're shedding a LOT when little or nothing has changed but your length.

I think hip to tailbone probably took me about 6-9 months, although I can't say I paid too much attention. I haven't had any stalls so far during my hair growth, but I did experience some atypical shedding a couple years ago when I was around waist. I'm pretty sure that was due to my haircare practices at the time (I was putting a lot of oils on my scalp). I know this might sound strange, but maybe your hair doesn't like being detangled while wet. I know some people find that their hair prefers to be detangled dry or wet, and that this can affect shed rates. Personally, if I properly detangle when wet I will shed like nobody's business, so I don't detangle until it's totally dry. It does make detangling more tricky, and time-consuming, but it's worth it to me.

I lose a small mammal worth of hair if I attempt to detangle while wet. I just don't do that anymore. I will let it mostly dry, Apply some oil or coney serum, and leave it alone until it is completely dry. Then detangle and style.

LongCurlyTress, I'm not long enough for much advice yet, but I do have sympathy. My longest hairs are shedding out, effectively keeping me from quite reaching Tailbone yet, and it's annoying! :blossom: It could just be a seasonal thing in your case, or any number of things, really. I detangle with conditioner in the shower, too, and if I'm having trouble with too many tangles I add more conditioner (or sometimes partially rinse it out and reapply) and let it sit a while longer. Usually for me that does the trick.

And then I just put the flexi through the 2 parts that the first topsy tail thing creates on the sides. I had to do the style a few times before I got it looking decent and secure. I'm not sure why it's so smooth looking :P I guess it's just my hair type. In my last picture my hair looks a little frizzy and wavy but I think it must be the humidity plus being outside where it's windy, cause my hair is normally more straight and sleek than that.

I got my partner to take a picture of the messiest ropebraid waves ever this morning, but it's the first picture I've seen from the back since my postpartum shed so I'm very pleasantly surprised by how much fullness the ends still have :cheese:

I'm solid tailbone now, right to the very bottom of the bone when straight, and my jumper is about 1" below Classic.

I touched up my roots today. And since I now have a fresh picture, I thought I'd check my check length taken today.

Behold, Slayer of Things, freshly bathed in the blood of his enemies.

I only dyed the roots. The length has only had a single "touch" up via mixing deposit-only color during a co-wash a month ago. Otherwise, its still pretty spot on from the day I bit the bullet two months ago. The roots were done with the same stuff I used on the whole length but with 20 vol developer.

I have ditched shampoo altogether.

Excuse the mess on the counter. I'm still cleaning up my mess from the touch up. (that container also has the last bit of my conditioner that I couldnt' get out from the pump. It will be later mixed in with MP's vampire red and pillarbox red for a full length hue sometime in August.

ETA: This is his texture, by the way. I wish I could get a deeper wave but, alas, his fatkins pulls them straight. On DC washes it gets wavier as well as when it is super humid.

Have I told you how much I love LHC? I never thought I could get this shade, let alone this length and health all at once...ever.
