View Full Version : Tailbone | Classic

Well, getting real disgusted again, so I must again be getting past tailbone, closing in on classic. Looked at my ponytail this morning, those super long long strands hanging down, is that growth, or just a knot ready to fall out? Lol, at myself for believing I'll one day arrive at classic "gracefully." This is where I've been and cut back before. This annoyed feeling is familiar.

I think it's about time I join this thread. I've been maintaining at about TB/BCL for quite a while now and I think I'm ready to actually commit to growing out to classic. I've held back partly because I still had a lot of mainstream ideas of how long hair should be (and my friends already don't hesitate to tell me that they would prefer my hair closer to BSL/waist) and TB already felt like enough of a statement.
But I've been through a lot of changes this past year and I'm actually quite sick of looking to other people's approval for what I already think is beautiful. So eff it. To classic!

If I'm lucky, I'll make it by christmas :D

Oh, I think I might belong here!
I thought I'd going to maintain my length at tailbone, but... I'm willing to go for a classic!
I'm in no hurry since my original goal was tailbone anyway, so I'm hoping for much joy while growing... :)

I'm not sure I belong here... I hadn't realized how much my hair has grown until a few days ago when trying a bun I had not done in a long time. I will see if I can get a good picture and I will also measure the length of my hair. I haven't measured in a few years :0. I enjoy seeing everyone's pictures.

I haven't taken a pic in sooo long. I had no idea my hair was this long until it was touching my leg in the shower...I thought it was some pieces that had fallen out but they were still attached! This my messy 'been sleeping with a bun' hair. Am I at classic?

I guess I'm popping in here. I've reached TB and am hoping to keep going to classic. I haven't trimmed (other that what I've done myself--maybe an inch or 2) in 3 years. I'm at 41 inches now and a solid classic is 46 inches on me. I used to grow 1.5-2 inches a month, but I seem to have really slowed down to MAYBE a 1/2 inch a month :-( I need to wear it up more and do something other than benign neglect. I'm starting to worry that I'm stalling. Any ideas to rejumpstart my growth?

Not sure exactly when I hit classic but I am there now, about a year after first posting in this thread when I was at tailbone. I had 2 trims in between but my ends are still kind of choppy, so I will maintain here until the hemline thickens up. I need to take a new length shot though hehe :)

So officially joining! I didn't join earlier because I knew I was going to chop off to a bit past hip. So now, 6 months after my large trim (I took off a bit over 6 inches) I'm confident enough on my thickness to go to classic! Although my hair is still thin compared to before the severe case of chicken pox last year most of my thickness came back.
Sorry for the crappy picture, the light in my bathroom is terrible! the top lace on my shirt is classic :p

So much progress and so many lovely heads of hair. Congrats to all who have made Classic and welcome to the many ladies checking in at TBL.
My rear crown layer has mostly made it to TBL. I have a odd one inch square at the top rear of my head that was not moving for the longest and it finally came out of stall mode. Still have 3-4 inches for Classic on those layers. Lower longest layer is 2 inches pass Classic. When it gets to FTP will consider maintaining for a year to let the other layers catch up. For now I will be here a while at least a year for the rest to reach Classic.

It seems I've finally graduated from waist and I'm on to tailbone! Huzzah!
As the ends are a bit uneven, I'll probably hover around TBL for a while, with some trims to even it up and tons of henna treatments before proceeding on to seriously pursuing classic.

Thank you! I use the Red Raj henna from hennasooq, but the key to my very vibrant red henna is that I supplement it with Special Effects 'Blood Red'! It's a semi-permanent, vegetable based dye, so it's non-damaging. I very heavily dilute the SFX into conditioner (vO5), about a 25/75 ratio, coat my hair in it, and leave it on at least for a few hours, preferably overnight. I also add a bit of it into my henna mix. I may write a post about the differences in my hair with SFX. : )

AAAAAAAAAA. So this evening I sat down for dinner and noticed I could sit on a good inch of hair if I pulled it straight (curly it's still up there at TB or a little above). So of course I jumped up, set the timer on my camera, and lo and behold ...

Yeah, I've come to the conclusion that it's not possible to have ends as nice as the length ... it's just older hair and plus after a certain length is liable to get caught in things even wearing it up 95% of the time. I S&D while sitting at my desk at work ... somehow the splits always show up in office lighting but nowhere else. ;) I haven't been able to figure out how to dust because my hair is so many different lengths.

Isn't that the truth? I was getting 1 inch cut off every 8 weeks for nearly a year in an attempt to get rid of split ends, and I have just as many now as I did a year ago. Hel with it! From now until classic length (about a year), lots of growing, very little trimming. I don't think S&D does much good, but I'll still snip splits when I find myself sitting around with nothing in particular to do. My magic split-snipping place is inside the truck.

I had a trim about two months ago which took me a little above Tailbone/BCL. Unfortunately, the stylist over-thinned my hair, so the last two inches aren't very much of my hair in terms of volume. It looks fine at this length because it's thick and wavy, but I'm concerned about growing it out and having the ends get worse. I could either maintain at TBL or I could just grow it out full steam ahead. Thoughts?

You can microtrim/dust the ends every few weeks to slowly thicken it up and keep it even while slowly gaining length also. I was doing this until recently, although my hair generally grows pretty fast.. :disco:

As much as I'd like to do that, my hair grows at a pretty average rate of half an inch a month. I've also never microtrimmed before and so I'll probably end up taking off all my growth every time I trim. Ah well.
I'm just going to grit my teeth and wait until December for my trim and decide then.

Well, everyone, I'm needing some opinions!
I thought that I had reached classic-when-wet this past July, but I've been very hesitant to call classic at all. My hair still seems so short to me, and it feels like I'm being a long-hair imposter if I call classic! So, I've been putting it off. However, in my most recent length photo, my hemline is even with the bottom of my pajama shorts, which are just past classic. Hopefully, this link to my photobucket will work so you can all see!
http://i1251.photobucket.com/albums/hh555/kallarina_rose/83436375-209A-46D5-8DBA-CDB79FC38EAF-16553-00000797A863015E_zpsdc61aefa.jpg (http://s1251.photobucket.com/user/kallarina_rose/media/83436375-209A-46D5-8DBA-CDB79FC38EAF-16553-00000797A863015E_zpsdc61aefa.jpg.html)
The only concern that I have now with calling classic is that when I turn to the side, my ends are still not clearing my bottom. I don't have a picture to show what I mean, but from the side, I still appear to be a few inches shy of classic.
So, what do you all think?

Welcome!
leslissocool I also feel like it's taking forever. It's a little frustrating, I haven't hankered after a hair goal in years. I made hip a few years ago, which was my original goal, and then I just coasted along to tailbone when I realized that just a tad longer was more flattering on my frame.
Now all of a sudden, I have something to grow towards and my hair is nowhere close to it. Ugh. And I like having my hair loose so putting it up to forget about it would just make me grumpier.
Also, I feel like my hair is at a length where I feel that even my very trusted hairdresser can't be trusted to only take off what I say. Like, he's thinking "no way she wants hair down to her butt, so I'll just cut off however much to keep it at this length" without realizing that, yes, I do in fact want to grow it longer and yes I only want half an inch off. I also would feel self conscious telling him I actually want my hair past my butt. Where I live, it's quite out of the ordinary and frankly, not even my friends think it's a good idea. They don't badger me about it or anything, but if I tell them I want my hair down to classic length, they simply say, "No."
Of course I have to cross these bridges when I come to them, but I guess I like to worry, haha. :p

Hintofmint, can you get a trusted family member to trim your hair? There is also the creaclip, and feyes method.I no longer feel I can trust my local hairdressers as they disapprove of this length,so far can't find a supportive one, so hubbie cuts and he does an awesome job!! I know what you mean about it being ''out of the ordinary'' in your area,I face that too where I live. The other day I was at a store and a husband /wife were walking/talking right behind me and they did not like my hair as their comments/discussion showed .The man then said to his wife very, very loudly[so to make sure I heard?] ''everytime I see her hair I think she must smell''.Too bad..it's growing longer! They can disapprove all they like,it doesn't bother me.Maybe just grow and don't discuss, and over time, seeing your hair at that length might change your friend's opinions? Many people have been brainwashed by the media and salons that shorter salon styled product filled hair is the way to go.

HintofMint I use a crea clip and ask DH to cut my hair like dulce suggested. Maybe a fellow metalhead friend? The people who encourage my hair are all DH's friends (band friends and band members, some set up shows). I'd trust them to cut my hair, mostly because they all like it.
I don't feel comfortable with any stylist that doesn't have hair that's longer than mine. Sadly, that's true the last stylist that touched my hair was BFF who's hair was 6 inches longer, and she did a great job.

I would love to trim my own hair, but alas, I trust myself even less than hairdressers. I also have blended layers that probably couldn't be replicated with a crea clip. I may just have to hunt for a supportive hairdresser.
For what it's worth (and not that you need my approval), I think your hair looks gorgeous! I can't believe people are so rude, but even more, I can't believe they're so blind.
I know I shouldn't talk about growing out my hair with people who don't really "get" unconventional styles, but sometimes girl-talk devolves into vanity talk and it's sometimes unavoidable. Unfortunately, I've already received (gentle) comments from these same friend who think my hair is too long as it is, so I doubt their opinion will change as it gets even longer. But I think that they understand that I have a very well developed sense of style and I'm far less likely to depend on them for hair/fashion/makeup advice in the first place.

My hair recently passed tailbone length (or at least i noticed only recently :D ) and is now slowly creeping towards classic. I'm not sure if I want to go all the way there, it sounds like it might be a bit problematic, but on the other hand, I don't think I'll be able too keep myself from trying to see just how far my hair can grow and still be healthy from roots to ends. :D

I've already received (gentle) comments from these same friend who think my hair is too long as it is
Everyone I know thinks my hair is long enough as it is.
It's approaching the end of the year. My ends are 'Can I call this classic' but I will be trimming about 1/4-1/2 in. in a few days

I'm going from TBL to classic, by default. If not for the coconut oil on dry ends, I wouldn't be close to that length. It is getting a little harder to handle, I've never had hair this long. We shall see.

I've been here pretty much for two years. I keep cutting off three inches or so each year, so I feel like I haven't made any progress. I just have so much breakage!! I'm finally just going to go for it, not cut my hair until I reach a solid classic length. Wish me luck!

Good luck, ConstantKi! :)
And hi everyone, I am officially joining this thread. I thought it would take me until after the new year to reach tailbone but somehow it snuck up on me. DH took a pic for me today to celebrate!
So far, things seem to me to have gotten easier the longer my hair gets. I suppose I might just be gradually getting used to it, and gaining skills such as putting it up and getting it to stay up all day long as I work, but either way it's gotten easier not harder. There is a lady in my town who has knee length and I think it's glorious. I'm not sure that I personally want to go that long - fingertip seems good to me right now - but man is her hair gorgeous. And she wears it down all the time too!

I'm just past TBL, and really hoping I can get to classic in the next few months! My hair has been growing an inch a month rather than half an inch a month recently (probably because the ends are in better condition rather than that it has decided to actually sprout from my head faster) so I might get to classic sooner than I thought. Currently hoping for classic by March/April next year.
I didn't think my hair would actually be able to get this long, but it seems to be doing fine, and the ends are in better condition than they were at BSL before I found the LHC, so fingers crossed...

Well, I can finally join this thread!! :hollie: Sooo happy! I've reached tailbone a month o maybe a little earlier but my ends were very fine so I was hesitating to call it an actual tailbone. I wish I had pics to show you guys... :( but no camera at the moment so there's it. I'll see if I can post some later.
As my signature says, my goal is classic and I'm so exited to see such lovely inspiration in this thread :inlove:. My growth is so much slow now because of previous chemical dye... it's a breakage party lol. So this weekind I'm going to take the plunge and henna my hair for the first time hooray! I hope it helps mantaining my ends healthy, as keeping it up and handle it the less I can.
My ultimate goal is a thick hemline, glossy and healthy red classic lenght hair for my 23 birthday (july next year).
Happy growing everyone :o

My hair had finally reached TBL. I wear it up so often I was shocked when I was in the shower and felt something brush my tailbone region, I jumped thinking it was a spider (I live in the woods... we get a ton of them), only to realize it was my hair!!! Yippee!!! Because I am so short (5ft tall) with a super short torso (my pants inseam is a 31.5 inch) my hair only had to be 34 inches to reach TBL. I am hoping I will reach classic with my hair is good condition. Any tips people can offer to ease into the process?

Hypersensitive, it looks great! Congratulations!
Rosiedeam, welcome! Wearing hair up is probably the easiest way to deal with growing for two reasons. First, it keeps it out of the way to avoid mechanical damage from tangles and friction. Second, it helps you be more patient when you justwanttogettoclassicrightnowthankyou! Out of sight, out of mind. Another thing I'd recommend is to increase use of oilings and deep treatments (if your hair does well with them). The hair is just older so it's probably a little more delicate, even if it's not damaged.

LOL I'm the same, being short is amazing to grow hair :p congrats on reaching tailbone! Are you already oiling your ends and wearing it up often? That's the best to keep the ends protected. And I guess dustings/microtrims help with hemline thickness.
Leslissocool: don't worry! You'll get there eventually, when you're not expecting it. How much of bleach damage is left? Your hair looks beautiful from you avatar pic, I wouldn't have guessed it has damage!

I think that depends on you. I personally only call a length when I reach it in my natural wavy state. I call it "can I call" when it does it straight. It's all personal preference though. You can be here either way though. That's the great thing about this site. ;)

Congratulations on reaching TBL, Rosiedeam!
As HintOfMint remarked, keeping your hair up is the best way of protecting it from tangling and getting caught on clothing, etc.
How you detangle also makes a big difference..i.e. always detangle with a wide tooth comb before brushing. I found that detangling in small sections and working from the bottom of the strands up to the scalp, helps isolate any tangles more easily. Always take apart the tangles with your fingers (hold the snarl/knot/tangle horizontally while you work on it).
I'm a firm believer in brushing with a pure bbb every day. It's an excellent way of exercising your hair follicles and daily brushing helps remove the dead cells from your hair (and lint). Brushing also imparts a lovely shine to your hair. If you brush in the bent at the waist position, your scalp will also benefit from increased circulation among the follicles.
I've noticed that boredom with hair seems to be a stumbling block for some here at LHC, so if you haven't done so already, start experimenting with new styles.
Here is a link to an easy two strand crown rope braid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPHEzUr5bWQ
Torrin Paige on You Tube has many excellent tutorials to inspire you.
How you shampoo your hair can make a difference. I don't mean the products you use, I mean the physical motions. Always brush out/detangle your hair before shampooing. I personally found that if I divide my hair in two sections via a center part, shampooing is easier. Also, when shampooing, try and move your fingers in one direction only. Start at the top of your head and work down to the nape. Don't go willy nilly all over the scalp...and never scrub your scalp with your nails. Use your fingerpads instead. I wash in the bent at the waist position but some find that that method is too tangle prone. I definitely recommend trying to wash one side of your hair at a time...and keeping it separate from the rest.
If you can stand it, rinse off with water as cold as you can stand.
When you're ready to blot your hair to remove the excess water, put a towel over your hair so that it hangs vertically on both sides. Wrap the towel around your strands, then using your palms, press down the towel wrapped hair to the ends. Repeat this again, then remove the towel. Take a fresh towel and wrap your hair in it and then wrap the towelled hair around your head. Finish your bathing chores and cleaning out the tub/shower, then undo the towel and begin to gently detangle it with a wide tooth comb. Finish with air drying (if too cold, you can use a small heater to help with the drying. Some folks use fans...or their blowfryers on the cold setting.
Stretching washes is a great idea and just remember that the more stuff you put on your hair, the greater the attraction it has for stuff flying around in the air. Less is more! Good luck!(

So I've decided that I want my hair to be not only classic length when wavy, but also grow out my V-shaped hemline into a straight across hemline with very blended layers. Because heaven forfend I choose a goal that's not going to evade me for years. I'm currently at tailbone (I've been saying that for a while, whassupwitdat?) but my hair is over-layered and V-shaped. I have 6-7 inches to go, but that's not including trimming away three inches in the bottom "tassel" and who knows how many inches of microtrimming and maintaining at classic to get a straight hemline.
Sometimes I feel like I'm going to be in this same thread 6 months from now going, "I'm still at tailbone..."

I've been lurking in this thread for a little while now. I'm officially at tailbone, which was my original goal. Now, I want to go to classic, but I'll be hanging out here for the next year micro-trimming to get rid of some of the leftover bleached hair and thicken the ends. I have as much FTE as I care to put up with, and if I let it keep growing, they will be thinner than I want them, so I'm exercising patience to get to classic with a nice, thick hemline. Fortunately, I'm short, and I lost a lot of weight and my butt shrank, so it shouldn't take as long as I originally thought to cover the distance. ;P

I'd like to join this thread, too! My hair is just to TBL, depending on the weather and how curly/wavy/straight it is. I've only gotten into deep conditioning in the last year or so, and I had a question: Can you do it too often? I live in an area that is rather dry and windy (lately) and I've yet to figure out how to dispell all that static. I don't even own a hairbrush anymore, relying solely on finger-combing because brushes and combs of ANY material produce a static build-up to where I can hear it crackling. (I also get shocked a lot when I touch my car and other metal things, so I'm pretty sure it's just me). Is it possible to oil/condition too often? My hair loves oil, aloe not so much. I just got a Gold 'n Hot heat cap yesterday, tested it out, and several time today wondered if it would be bad to spend just 10-20 minutes with it, it felt so nice and worked so well. I don't want to get shriveled, oil-adicted ends and have to set back my classic length goal by a few years....

You've tried wooden brushes/combs and had static with those too? Those were the magic trick for me. Also, carry around some dryer sheets. Run those over your hair, or keep one in your winter hat too. That should help.
If you live in a dry area, aloe might not be the thing for you. My hair doesn't like it either. I think it's a humectant (I might be wrong there) which means it takes moisture out of moist areas and puts it into dry areas. If the air is dry, it's pulling moisture out of your hair and into the air. Strangely enough, I've had good results with adding honey to my shampoo. It's also a humectant, but in my shampoo, it keeps the moisture in my hair.
As for oiling too often— if your hair is looking especially greasy, then it's too much oil on at once, but you can oil all the time. I put oil on the ends daily. Before I wash, usually the night before, I'll put lots of coconut oil in my hair and leave it overnight or for at least a few hours, then I'll put on a tiny bit after as a leave-in. My hair loves oil, and it gets what it likes. Coconut oil soaks into the hair shaft, which is good for me. Oils like olive oil don't soak in as much and work more like a sealant/protectant. The best oil to use depends on the person and their hair.
As for deep conditioning, if you're using a conditioner and not oil, then just do it when needed. That could be twice a week or once a month. Depending on the ingredients, your hair could react differently. Mine gets straw-like with protein conditioners, but other people's hair loves the stuff. Try to build things up slowly and one at a time so you know what is and isn't working. Also, keeping your hair up in cold/dry/staticky weather will help keep it from drying out too.

Well, turns out I shouldn't have been posting in this thread pretty much all year as my last trim took me well above BCL/TB and I didn't even notice! I've been growing back out to TB all this time and here I thought I was stalling. Silly me.
I'm getting so impatient with growth these days. Unfortunately, I like wearing my hair down, so wearing it up to forget it would just make me more unhappy. I wish I could be more zen about the journey but frankly, I just want my hair to be at its goal length and be done with it. /end rant.

I'm hoping to reach classic by my birthday! Sadly my camera broke and my other needs a new charger cord, SOoooo as soon as I find one I should be able to post some pictures that were not taken by my phone
My hemline is actually the thickest it's ever been, it's really hard to get a decent picture though with my phone, they are all blurry and by myself it's hard to get my hair not to move around and be weird! I trimmed a lot last year, half of my growth, so I'm hoping for no cuts in 2014. I'll find a way to get better pictures!

Gorgoues, Lippytoes! Love the braidwaves. I'm 1a and braidwaves are the closest I'll ever get to a curl... sigh.
I'm thinking that I *might* be able to reach classic this year. So... classic by 2015? What about the rest of you? When do you predict reaching classic?
Thanks! I wear my hair in braids such a lot that I almost always have braid waves. And my 1c/2a hair holds the waves quite nicely. :)

Same here, if, BIG IF, I don't have to trim away too much (or get too much trimmed away by accident). Northeast winters have not been kind to my hair and apparently (I'm in California at the moment) the northeast has been hit with a monster blizzard. I'm going to have to baby the hell out of my hair this winter. Usually by May, I have to cut off two whole inches thanks to winter dryness. With my growth at half an inch a month, so 6 inches a year, two inches in one haircut (I get it cut twice a year) is a big setback. I really need to make it clear to my hairdresser to ONLY cut off half an inch this time around.

OK, YAYYYY! Go hair, grow grow grow! Glad that there are others who think the might make classic by 2015.
Yes, I know damage can take it's toll. I do my own trimming these days, but yes, HintOfMint, tell your hairdresser to hold back on trimming off the inches! I try to have a light hand that way. From what I've read here, you can get every bit as much of a good effect from a 1/8" trim as a 2" trim. So here is hoping we have a relatively damage free year and can keep on growing! :)

I have been oiling the ends of my hair for about 6 months before washes, I am now trying to lightly oil every night since my hair seems to be getting a little dry (probably the weather). I'm wearing it up pretty much all the time now... I find myself experiencing a lot of sheading and I'm freaking out. I've started measuring my poney tail circumfrence and I've found it to be holding steady at 3.5inches. However, I feel like it is really thin. Any tips for decreasing sheading?

I recently had a trim to make things a bit more even (growing out layers), but I'm back at tailbone. :) I'm growing to classic length, and then to mid-thigh. That's dry classic for me, dry classic is my dream length.
My current hair routine: I've been doing CG (curly girl) method for 1.5 years and I love it, but with this length (and thickness) it's becoming too much of a hassle and too costly (used almost a full bottle of gel each time, said gel was $6...) so I'm forced to quit, from now on I will only use CG when I have a special occasion or something.
So right now I just wash and condition. Sometimes I wash with a very light conditioner, and sometimes with a low-poo. Then I condition with a very rich conditioner, full of oils and hydrolyzed proteins. After washing I seal my ends with an oil (grapeseed oil usually), which works fantastically and really prevents split ends. From now on I'm just going to do this daily and on a larger part of my hair than just my ends. Every now and then I clarify with a shampoo that contains sulfates, the night before that I oil my hair with avocado oil to protect it. Sometimes I do deep/protein treatments, I use my bonnet dryer for that. I used to do a lot of chamomile cold tea rinses, my hair loved that. I sleep on a silk pillowcase.
What I should do a lot more is wear my hair up though... >.< my hair is having a harder time to gain length lately, and with this length it can sometimes be a hassle to wear it up. But I suck at doing updos, haha. I should buy some hair sticks...
Anyway, here is a picture of my current length. Hair is still slightly wet here. When I manually stretch the curls, they reach tailbone :o

Emanuelle - You have such pretty curls! I'm in the same boat as you regarding just having trimmed a few inches to get myself closer to being layer free. Post-trim I'm back at tailbone, and planning to get another 2 inches cut off in 8 weeks. I reckon I should hit classic by or before the end of the year since my growth rate is a solid inch a month. Here's hoping it all plays out for us all! :)

Hi all. I tend to describe my hair as waist length but I took photos yesterday as I'm going to have it hennaed tomorrow and I can see I'm past waist and on to tailbone. Not sure how far I'll go. I'm lucky that my hair does pretty well left alone but I'm thinking about a bit of a trim after the henna. Any thoughts or advice?
Here it is before I go red tomorrow!

Ceridwen Iris; I would wait until after the Henna job to decide on weather you need a trim or not. Your hair looks pretty healthy down to the ends in the pics. Henna will probably only improve that, especially if you follow up with a moisturizing deep treatment. Once done, you may feel you don't need a trim ;)
Scarlet_Celt
January 27th, 2014, 01:41 PM
Ceridwen Iris: I agree with Hairitic. Your hair looks healthy, so I wouldn't worry about trimming, unless you feel your hair could use it after you henna it.

Thanks guys. I'm sitting here with a big gloop of henna on my head, which is starting to drip down my back and I alternate between excited and terrified about the new colour. My ends were a bit fried so I might chop of an inch or so if that is still the case after the henna.

Hi everyone! My hair got to tail bone ish at the end of last year (I am very confused about where tbl is, but I'm calling it 37" on me). I am at 38.5" today after trimming about 1.5" last night. I think classic is about 42". Might get there by the end of the year!
This length seems to be very tricky on me. My ever dependable nautilus is falling out every 5 minutes! Really hope I can find a new, easy bun that stays put. :)

Oh my oh my! I was thinking 'well, it's time for a length shoot' just because I was bored. When I saw my pics I was so surprised to see the very tips of my hair reaching classic!!! I.... I still don't believe it, I'll call it classic when my ends become more thick. I did a small trim on the equinox and wasn't expecting a lot of growth.
And joining the falling nautilus crowd lol. Last week I couldn't manage to get my hair in a bun that last so I just let it down. A whole day down on it's own :shudder: at the end of that day I had a rats nest on my head. Had to do a moisture DT and be extra gentle with it.
Well, here's the pic! The ends didin't really show with those jeans so I added the one with shorts

My hair is now only half an inch or so from classic. It is starting to feel a bit long to me now. It still doesn't feel very long, but it does feel longer than it did at tailbone, which is a relief. Clearly it is growing faster than the hair dysmorphia!

Measuring in at 39.7 there's really not so mich of a difference between BCL and TBL for me, i rarely have something i would dare to call bum anyways. Just i find it still doesn't look long on me. I'm 182cm (kinda 5'11") with a short torso, so this really doesn't seem long at all in proportion. I was predenting to be shorter in front of the mirror, bending my knees, lol, and this way it does look long. If i'm not satisfied at classic i should conside leg amputation and call it a day. I mean, what the... I'm looking at many other pictures and think "oh wow, this is so much longer" while it's actually the same measure hitting at the same part of the body, but still it looks different, even my hemline is pretty full and blunt, doesn't help anything. Meh, frustrating.

When I reach classic, I think I'll grow for just a bit more, because this is the longest my hair's ever been... But then I'm probably going to cut back to somewhere between hip and tailbone. At this length, my hair's a bit too unwieldy for me to wear down. But it's pretty awesome to have almost-classic hair for the first time ever, nonetheless :D

I'll take a length shot next time there's some proper light in my flat! It's been so grey and rainy that it's really hard to get a decent picture.
And yes, let's celebrate our current lengths! It's long even if it's not quite classic yet :)

I'm checking in! I've been at tailbone for a month, but was reluctant to join this thread before more of my hair had gotten to that length. I finally feel like I'm ready now. My siggy pic is from last month, and the line shows approximately where classic is (the skirt had been sliding up and it was right below my cheeks when I took that picture, but I didn't realise it until after I was done :o ). I'm so excited, my hair has never been this long before!

Thank you for the compliment! I cut my hair into a slight U-shape, but it's definitely awesome to have it pretty much one length. I get enough wispies in my braids as it is, so it's nice not to have to deal with layers. :)
It's good to take hair pics sometimes (I mostly forget to), because then you can actually see the length and go "holy crap, okay, that IS long!" :D

Well i think it looks perfect this way, you have a very slim bodyframe and a blunt hemline would just look to heavy, thats the reason why i am trying to grow mine out and slowly approach fairy tale ends as i'm growing towards classic. I love the silkyness of straight hair, but if you like curls, don't lay off the styling options completely, after all we should be having some fun with our hair. You could try something like sponge rollers instead, i think it is as gentle as it gets and looks amazing.

It works pretty well, even on my naturally messy waves it gives much more definition and movement without any heat. Super easy, like 10 minutes before going to bed, sort of rag curls but much quicker and they come out tighter. If your hair holds a curl well, i think this is the way to go. I'm not totally against heat, but if in able to achieve a style without it, it's great to do it more often. :D
Looking forward to read how it went and see your pic.

I don't know if I belong here yet or no (I think I'm there when wet!), but since I was grappling with the idea of cutting and going back somewhere between BSL and waist, and in the end decided to go for a classic instead... I decided to join you and patiently wait for my hair to arrive at classic. :)
It will take time and a LOT of patience (first of all, I must hide my scissors since they get happy somewhere at this length of mine!), but I'd really like to see how the classic will feel.
Right now I'm a little bit bummed about the fact that my hair is starting to be difficult to manage when wearing down (and I like to wear my hair down), but on the other hand, I'd really like to skip my favorite almost-waist-to-taibone journey this time and try to go further.

How everyone else doing on their growth ? :D I am kinda considering if i should or shouldn't cut an inch or so to even my hemline. Or should i just first try get to classic ? Was doing a S&D today and found about 8 hairs that had some split ends, i guess no too bad for this lenght ?
And i have a question, should i start oiling my ends daily or continue only oil prewashing and after washing once ?
Nymphea
June 1st, 2014, 11:04 AM
Well, I oil my ends daily - I take a little bit of oil, but it helps a lot.
As of cutting, I will stick to the needs of my hair. So, if I have a little damage of which I can take care of, I will let it grow. I will do some smaller trims sometimes though (1/2 inch or so), just to thick up the hemline.
I'm pretty much relaxed about going to classic, which is kind of odd, since at my hairgrowing journeys I'm usually excited to see some new length. It is as I'm actually experimenting with getting to classic now - I admit it's something that I haven't planned at all, but it will be interesting and exciting anyway! :D

Welcome, StellaKatherine and Nymphea :o both of your manes look amazing!
Well, a long time since I posted here, and this is going to be a quick short post as I eat a kiwi and get ready to sleep.
I've reached Classic two months ago more or less. But it didn't look like classic, because of my thiiiin lame ends, actualy I could count how many strands were at classic lol. So I did a little trimming a month ago, and now that it's 2 cm longer than classic, the ends look as bad as they looked a while back. I want to trim again but I don't want to lose length if my ends will look the same in a month. What should I do? Cut a lot more, get thicker ends and let it grow again or maintain with little trimms every month? I don't know anymore :horse:
Nymphea
June 2nd, 2014, 01:56 AM
Hello, Khristopher and thank you!
Microtrimming does miracles for me - that is the way you don't lose much length and in the same time you keep you hemline thicker as the time goes by. It may result with a little stall in growing, but it's worth if you are aiming for a thicker ends. Just be patient (personally, this is the hardest part for me) and it will even up just nicely. :)
I don't know if you have some damage - if you do, then some more concrete trim could help (and by that I don't mean big trim - sometimes an inch does miracles)! :)
Ingrid
June 2nd, 2014, 01:58 AM
I think a good way to avoid thin ends is to trim a maximum of 0.5cm a month, less if you can. That way you can still gain length, and removing thin ends will let your hemline to thicken up. I got to Classic length with a thick hemline using this method... before I cut it all to a pixie :( Now I'm in the process of doing the same to grow my hair again and gradually get rid of dye-damaged hair.
EDIT: Seconding Nymphea :)

I just measured my hair and it came to about 42 inches (107 cm)! I ignored my hair for a few months and it grew! :disco: (The last time I checked it was 41 in)
Looking in the mirror, I'm about 2, maybe 3 inches from classic, so my estimation of 45 in was pretty correct!
I'm planning to trim off about an inch soon, so I'm not so sure that I will make it to my goal by the end of the year, but I ought to come pretty darn close. :)
I really need to start to regularly s&d, but I just get sooooo bored and impatient while doing it, and there are just so many split ends that it seems like an endless task. ugh.

As for me and my hair: after cleansing it Saturday, I checked and I'm pretty much on track for Classic by August as I have about an inch to go. Then I plan on getting an inch trimmed off an semi-maintaining for awhile to thicken up my hemline.
In addition, after the cleansing, I decided to try for some curly girl type texture. So, I forced myself not to Tangle Teezer out the tangles while my hair was wet the way I usually do. So, I let it dry after doing everything else I normally do (detangler spray, leave-in conditioner, Monoi Oil.) Once it was dry, I finger combed only, then sprayed with a Strengthening spray containing herbs and ACV. WOW, I've got some lovely wavies and my hair looks thicker. I'll try to get a pic later today and post it. I'm Happy to be able to get a different look and to discover that Henna hasn't completely eliminated my curls. ;)

Right now I try to forget about my hair and just to put it in a bun. I feel so far away from classic! On my body hip and classic are pretty much far away and that is one of the reasons that almost every time I give up length for fresh ends feeling somewhere at hip-to-TBL.
I'll try not to do it this time.

I've got the same problem! I do a braided bun all the time, and I really don't know a more comfortable style. :(
It might be a thickness issue: thicker tresses need to get "organized" (braided or sectioned) before going up comfortably and securely. Otherwise it either pulls on sections of scalp or falls apart or both.
I have another question:
Did you guys notice you needed to tweak your routines after TBL in order to keep ends looking good? Do you use same amounts of oils, conditioners? Any new treatments you've added?
I haven't changed anything in my routine in a long while and I'm wondering if I could improve on things.

I do sectioned buns or double buns most of the time. I've also found that many buns (like orchid bun and logroll) can't be held comfortably with stick, fork, ficcare or flexi-8, but I can get them to work if I use long bobby pins or claw clips. I've bought a lot of medium sized claw clips on Ebay recently, and I have some large ones on the way too. I think they're brilliant. Right now my hair is up in an orchid bun held with 4 medium claw clips. Very comfortable :D

I have very dry hair, and up until two washes ago, I solved that problem by putting a lot of panacea/salve on it before bunning. Then suddenly I felt inspired by Lapushka and all the other folks in the LOC thread, and I decided to try that method after washing. I put on leave-in conditioner on wet hair first, let my hair towel dry for a bit, then I mixed a small amount of Nightblooming's Freya salve with 3 drops of Triple Moon Anointing Oil, and applied all over my hair. I've only done it twice, but I can safely say that the LOC method is amazing! My hair has been super soft from roots to tips, and I haven't needed to add any panacea/salve to my hair after drying.

*ranthat* My hair is finally progressing beyond TBL, after a bit of a stall, but my ends seem so THIN. It's making me want to cut them off so I can have a nice thick hemline, but then I'll lose length! This happens every time I grow past BCL... >< *ranthat off*
In all seriousness though, I think I'll try to push for classic and then maintain there to see if my ends will thicken up. Anyone else in a similar boat?

Thank you very much, KittyBird! :) LOC is great for length retention, I think it protects ends a lot. I love using leave-in conditioner + oil + panacea or shea butter post-wash, but I'm not sure if I'd count it as the traditional LOC method, where the final "C" is a styling cream or gel, as I don't use any styling products. Since I'm not a curlie, I feel I should be able to get away with just oils and conditioners for styling.
In the LOC method thread some people change the method dramatically and still call it LOC, so maybe I could call what I do a "mini-LOC" too. ;)

Why not? Some substitute the Oil for a serum (me), some substitute the styling Cream for a gel (me) - and it's still the LOC method, inspired by the curly girl method. Many roads lead to the same destination. ;)

i've been trying to decide if i should maintain for awhile, my ends are always varying degrees of wavy so i have a hard time deciding if they look too thin or not. I finally got someone to take a length shot for me and i STILL can't decide! :D I'm liable to just keep growing it, it's not like it's ever hanging straight down my back anyways, if it's down it's pulled to the front over one shoulder so i can keep an eye on it.

^ Very pretty Hele! I love the color!
And guess what?! My hair reaches tailbone!!:joy: I'm finally joining this thread:D I hope to reach classic next year. It's only about ten cm (4 inches) away, but I trim a little form time to time. Its not easy taking a picture of the lenght, but I will try. Perhaps I can convince someone to do it for me.

I am so THRILLED to announce that I now qualify for this thread - and the company of all these wonderful heads of hair. It has been quite a journey. I have just hit TB at 41.5 inches. Yes I am tall, 5'10 3/4" to be exact and have a long torso. From here to classic is only about 4 inches (!!!!!!!!) so I hope to be there next year this time. maybe sooner.
In the past year I have done 3 self mini trims and gained a length (in spite of trims) of 5 inches. The prior year, with 3 or 4 salon trims, I gained no length. I also have had 2 major surgeries in the past year and had remarkable sheds. The last 6 to 12 inches of my hair are pretty thin. Well, other people don't think so, but I do. But I also have all of these new hairs growing everywhere that are 4 to 6 inches long. I call them my whispies.
SO, Valkyriejae and Hele, I am having the same end thinning issues you are, and my decision is: I want to get to classic. I want to know that at least some of my hairs can do that. I will continue to S and D and treat my hair very well (I wear it up every day, and other endless care obsessions) in order to get there. Since classic is my current goal (tho that may change, it has every other time I have achieved my goal) I am pretty sure that once I get to classic I will maintain and thicken up those ends. If, after a time, the ends don't thicken, I will consider cutting a little shorter. Even when I first reached hip, the ends were much, much thicker.
My texture is so similar to both Stellakatherine's and Hele's and close to Stellak's color. Someday I will learn to post photos. There are some photos of my hair on the meet report for Seattle that were taken in April. If anyone can give me a tutorial on how to get pics from picasa to here, I would be forever grateful.
Thank you for listening!

I've been absent for awhile due to work and grad school, but I'm back now. My hair is just past TB length and I fear it's going into a stall. About 4 months ago I cut 4 inches off, and I'm now back yo where I was before my trim. Ill try to post a pic later, but it's not the best. Actually, the picture prompted my to come back because benign neglect it's not working anymore. My ultimate goal is ftl, but Classic is my next milestone. So I will be joining you and trying more updos.

...I'm pretty much at classic now! I'll post pics when I get the chance to take some.
Tailbone to classic has been a bit of a test for me - this is the longest my hair's ever been (and it's been pretty long for most of my life). And I have to say, even though it's rather great to have "super-long" hair, I think I'm going to cut back to hip or so in a while. At this length it's just beginning to be a bit of a hassle for me, tbh. I've never worn my hair down much, and since I passed tailbone I've basically stopped doing it, because it just gets in my way and is cumbersome. Also, my hair's getting a bit heavy for my chronic-pain neck. :/ So, if I cut to hip, I'll be able to wear my hair down again, and probably still be able to do the hairdos that I can do now. It's going to be an adjustment, but I think I want to cut. However, I'm going to enjoy classic for a moment at least!
