But I think I have to make a little trim on the way, my ends are very thin :(

I keep thinking...I will maintain when I hit classic, but that is what I said about hip, then about TBL. When I hit hip, I thought, well, I want to be hip in the front, too (ya know, over the shoulder reduces length). Well, I am about 2" past hip in the front and an inch past TBL in back or so.

Do a lot of people cut or maintain here? I am just finding my hair too unwieldly to wear down anymore. My braids get fuzzy after only an hour or so. It just doesn't seem to be as fun anymore as, say, around hip.

Starting to consider a cut instead of a trim this August.

I am having horrible dreams about haircuts, though! I dreamt last night I shaved my head, but left the length on back (like some freakish mullet), but I cut the long part to BSL yet left one lock in the middle down to TBL. It looked horrid in my dream but I kept running my hands over the buzzed part of my head saying "its sooooooo sooooffffttttt" while family kept telling me it looked wonderful. LOL!

The blunt ends thing is probably the #1 thing keeping me from trimming. The last REAL trim I had (not a microtrim) I could not stand the ends. It made bunning almost impossible and they wouldn't all cooperate and lay together or anything. I think it took 6 months for the effect to "wear off". I need the ratty ends to do my do's.

Last year I only trimmed 1/4" and kept my do-able ends. I am afraid that this year I will have to have a real trim and suffer through the ends thing. Of course I could go to FTE's, but I really need to nip some damage before it spreads and I do so like my hemline straight with a slight U.

Spidermom - that's where I am right now! I'm so tired of detangling I'm not bothering most days anymore, just wind in a bun in the morning and detangle it into three separate sections in the evening to braid. I'm just tired of dealing with it! Care to share details of this cut that you're loving so much?

I don't have many details. I told my stylist "remove all the dried out and damaged hair and do whatever you think will make my hair beautiful again, but leave it long." I have long layers, and my growing out fringe is blended down the sides from about breast length. It flows and behaves so beautifully now.

i like it though i think ive already told you that a few times.. and yeah, im too lazy to detangle most days.. especially since even if i did detangle it i would wind it back up into a bun..

I went away for a little while due to school and a pretty nasty Lice-scare... nasty for me, that is. :agape: I was so stressed :tmi:and upset, but in the end I pretty much caught it before it turned into anything, and we're all pretty sure I had picked it up in the bus the same day I found the issue. :justy: Iwas really terrified that I had ruined my hair and expsed my friends and family to a particularly nasty parasite,:shocked: but it was a single louse and I think I found a single nit. :angry: I read through the boards about non-comercial solutions, and I kept my hair soaked in tea-tree laced coconut oil for a week solid, kept my hair under multiple scarves and bandanas and had my spouse check my scalp daily. It was a nightmare. Then I had to try to wash out tall that oil, which took a bunch of washings and almost a full quart of conditioner.:headache: Now my TB+ hair is awful, :no: splits all over, tangles like it is wet, even when it is bone dry and it's weirdly slippery and my pins, sticks and ponytails slide right out after a time... I think another trim may be in order, but I don't know how short I am actually willing to go. If I take off 6 inches, the quality is sure to be improved, but I will be back where I started last May, when I first started lurking and about five months growth from tailbone.:nono:

I might agonize over it for awhile, but I'd go for the cut PrincessBob. It's no fun to fight with your hair every single day, and you might only need to remove 2-3 inches rather than 6. I was prepared to have barely hip-length hair when I told my hair dresser to take off all the damage, but it didn't have to go that short.

Another vote for a 2-3" trim. Just cut as little as needed but as much to have nice hair again.

Spidermom..I thought I was the only one who would bun with tangles and all. :silly: LOL. Glad you are happy with the trim. I am considering the same thing as I feel I have reached an unworkable length (for me). How are you liking the blunt ends? That is what I am dreading.

PrincessBob...I have been through the lice thing before. IT IS AWFUL. :justy: IT IS HORRIBLE. No words can express the frustration of these tiny little invaders. And it wasn't just the hair, but the house and vacuuming and cleaning the couches, etc. UGH. It was a couple years ago for me and I titled it in my journal "the Great Lice Capades". lol. The good thing about lice is, that is you are really diligent, they can be eradicated and never come back. It is people who only half try to get rid of them that get the stubborn reinfestations. Since I was working on my kids every day :suspect: , I think I cold be a professional nit-picker. I feel like I know enough about lice to be an expert. {{{shudders}}}

That being said, it sounds like your hair maybe had a protein overdose or something, or is too alkaline or acidic now. If you really think it is permanent danage and not something that can be fixed with treatments of some kind, I would go with the voices before me and say start with a smaller trim. :scissors: Even as little as an inch.

I went in once prepared for 4" to be lost and the lady only took an inch. I could not believe the difference it made. As I sit here with 3-5" of damage myself, I am taking my own advice on the 1" thing as soon as I can work up the nerve to do even that. I like TBL hair. At this time I do not care if my hair ever gets longer than that. If it would help in any way, I will even be ahaircut buddy with you and we can plan to get our trims the same day. :flowers:

I don't think I'm emotionally ready to sacrifice the length for ease of detangling yet. I've accepted that I can just wind it or braid it tangles and all. And I've dug my old Pre-LHC brush out of the back of my drawer (so glad I didn't throw that away when I moved! I almost did!) and I've gone back to actually brushing it, albeit much more carefully than I did before.

I wish there was some way I could "take a break" from caring for my hair for a week or two where I don't worry about it. I think then I might have some renewed energy for it. I have a strong feeling that it's related to my depression over the weather though, because I don't feel like doing anything other than sit on the couch and browse LHC lately.

May I suggest a Tangle Teaser? I finally bought one after reading about them on LHC for months and I don't know how I ever lived without it now. Detangling does not even cross my mind anymore and my shedding is so drastically reduced it was well worth the $10. I was very skeptical, but it really is amazing. You use it the same as any brush, start at the bottom, work your way up, but it doesn't pull and make knots like so many brushes do. I don't use anything else for detangling. You can even use them in the shower but I did not like to. You can get them at Sally's or online. Just a thought!

I am loving this cut! I had one moment this morning when I was combing it out and thought "OMG; it's so short!" But only taking 2 minutes to comb out from sleeping on it wet more than made up for the loss in length. All my favorite buns still go up just like they did before.

I agree with WaitingSoLong about the Tangle Teezer. This does less damage than my wooden comb!

Thanks for the support. I think I will start with a 1-2" trim and see if it helps. My spouse is my "hair dresser" so it's not the trauma of a stranger (who has no idea about the trouble I've gone through to keep and care for my hair) hacking away at my hair, it's just that it takes SO long to grow back for me. It's not that it grows inordinately slow, I'm just really impatient! Well, here goes. I'm setting the clock, I will have the trim by April 7.

Well, between Spidermom, PrincessBob, and a few others I have seen share their trimming issues, I decided to go ahead and trim a little today using Feye's self-trim method for a U shape. Seems like I have to I add a step to her instructions, probably because I part my hair so far to the side. Anyway, the results seem good. I took off about exactly an inch when it was all said and done, knowing I may need to take off another inch later. Sort of surprised me, I felt like I was taking off 2 inches really.

It's times like these I wonder why I put it off so long. I guess because I am trying to reach a goal or something, but I think I like TBL and may actually maintain here awhile, who knows. Anyway, I am still TBL+ after the trim and I did an SMT before the trim so my hair is nice and soft. The U is barely noticeable but I just do not like a perfectly straight hemline on me for some reason.

Anyway, just thought I would share. I don't think I have as much damage as I thought. I cannot find any splits on the ends now but there are some further up and on the shorter hairs around my ears (they are only around BSL to waist length). In the end, at least as best I can tell half an hour later, I am very happy I did it and pleased with the results and need to remind myself that trimming is not an evil thing!

I find myself creeping closer and closer to classic. I don't have a specific length goal, other than to be able to do a full crown braid. I am so close! My braid ends a couple inches before meeting the base of the braid, but the tassel completes the circle. I never thought I would be able to put up with my hair at this length but I am pleasantly surprised to find each difficult stage passes.

It seems like I'm only about 3 inches away from solid classic. My ends are starting to get pretty thin though, and it's been probably 6 months since i last trimmed so it's getting a bit scraggly.

I'm trying not to mess with my hair too much this year as I've got my wedding in november. I'm not messing with any chemicals or dyes, I'm just trying to get my natural growth as long as possible in the meantime.

If anyone has any suggestions for vintage 40's inspired hairstyles for tailbone to classic length I'd be eternally greatful!




Just wanted to add, I had a TMI "Holy cow whats that touching my butt!' in the shower yesterday. It was my hair touching new places :D

I don't think it can be healthy for my hair to get this knotted before being pulled apart... I'm trying not to trim until June, then I'm going to do a mini-chop before my wedding to even the ends out so it looks healthy and full. That's the plan anyway.

I was combing out my hair yesterday and asked my BF, who was sitting behind me, if I was near classic yet. He said I was still an inch away, and then commented that if my butt didn't stick out so much, I might make it there, because my hair had to use up some length to travel around my curves and didn't just hang straight! If I swayed my back so that my hair just hung down straight, it was closer to classic. I found this amusing and thought others would too! :D

Thanks :D You can definitly feel the texture difference between my virgin vs dyed hair. It's even more wavier. Any chemical process straightens out all my waves.

I hit tailbone a couple of months ago, and while my ultimate goal is classic, it's probably going to a very long way off. :o I had a long-lasting, heavy shed last year that left my ends pretty thin, so I expect I'll be trimming for a long time, until the hemline thickens up.

So I'll be sticking around for a while. ;)

Small trims every 3 months; that's the plan. I think growing without trimming was my problem. The damage compounded exponentially until it seemed I had far more damaged ends than good ones.

Brianna: I am going to maintain at TBL for awhile and cut out some pretty damaged ends so I will probably be here a couple years at least. IF I don't cut it all off! Grr.

So I am not really for S&D but yesterday the lighting was just right and I saw an area of heavy splits so I did an S&D session. I am sort of like Spidermom and think that S&D may actually lead to more splits. I bought new scissors and that is all they have ever been used for, but I still do not think it is the greatest thing to do (S&D). So anyway, I was appalled at how many splits and white dots I have. It is mostly the canopy hair or hairline hair all the way around. I know you cannot really tell, my hair appears healthy to others and in photos.

Also, I noticed I have a decent sized lock of reddish hair. It is in the back and underneath so apparently I have never noticed it before. It is a beautiful color but contrasts starkly with the blonde. Now I really want to shave and start over and see what my virgin hair is like.

I am wanting to wear my hair down more. My focus seems to have shifted from getting long hair to being able to enjoy my hair. But this conflicts with my desire for healthy hair as it seems I get a lot of damage wearing it down as it is always getting stuck places or caught in zippers, etc. I get frustrated and put it up. I had the same thoughts rather hard a few days ago, but I've been stuck in this rut for a long time. Lately I've been sitting on it when I don't pay attention, and I'm not sure I like it this long. It looks awesome down, but I rarely wear it that way. It's up almost all the time, or in a braid maximum, and even then it gets where it shouldn't. I always cringe when I pull it from somewhere and I hear a hair snap. :(

It is MUCH easier on my hair than the twisting and pulling of wearing it up or back.

But that's not really why I'm doing it.

I just like it.

I know that some people (not here, thankfully!) believe that a 57 year old woman shouldn't walk around that way. And in a way, that IS why I'm doing it. I've had this hair for 45 years. It's healthy and happy.

By the way, I realized as I posted in another thread that my signature photo is out of date. My hair is 5 or 6 inches longer than shown in the sig photo, but I'm useless at taking photos of myself and will need to get someone sometime to take another. Unless I get a trim first.

I've been pretty much forbidden by my husband to wear my hair down in the kitchen. Nobody likes to find a 3-foot hair on their plate or in their food. But - shhhhhhhhhh - I had it down when I made coffee this morning. In fact, it's still down. I washed it last night and puddled it above my pillow overnight, so now it's full of springy ringlets. I don't want to comb those out and put it up, though I will when I get around to house-cleaning later. Vacuuming; it must happen. But for now I'm sitting in front of the computer transcribing imaging reports and visiting my friends at LHC, so it can stay down.

Spidermom, I always wear my hair up in the kitchen if I am cooking, but not if I am just makigng coffee or cleaning. No one has ever said anything about my hair and food. However I am careful never to finger comb or otherwise mess with my hair pretty much anywhere except my bedroom where I do my hair. I hate finding my hairs on the floor and since we moved, we have wood floors and I can see them floating around. It drives me nuts. Call me anal but I pick up any hairs that have made their way to the floor DAILY, or pretty much anytime I detangle, and I neurotically clean my brushes after each use. I have a hair trashcan. NO JOKE. lol. A couple weeks ago in church I apparently had a hair on my shirt. The lady next to me pulled it off and said "one got away" and then DROPPED IT ON THE FLOOR. I thought I would die! I went looking for it and never did find it. SIGH. This is probably one reason I wear it up so much.

Jane53...I have often wondered how much damage I do wearing it in buns or braids. I figure it cannot be worse than wearing it down. Yet sometimes when I am undoing a braid there are hairs that seem hopelessly tangled and I cannot figure out how it happens. I am very slow and careful. At this length the only bun that holds like a rock for me is the Hypnobun. The part where you divide the hair and stretch it over the bun just seems very damaging to me. Oh and yesterday I had my hair in a cinnabun and we were mushroom hunting when a briar reached out and ran completely through my bun. It was held in by spin pins. It took me 5 full minutes to free myself fromthe briar, but the briar was still in my bun. My dd helped me. There were about 6 thorns on a 2" piece stuck in my hair. I ended up having to break one part off and push it through, kind of like you woulda fishhook.

Nymph...I agree that my hiar looks great down but I rarely wear it that way. It just gets in the way/doesn't seem practical. Unless I am sitting at my PC, there is little I can do where it doesn't cause problems. Cooking, cleaning, yardwork, horses, driving... Seatbelts are always a nightmare. I have learned one technique, though, if I put it in a cinnabun for awhile then take it down but don't detangle it, it just lays in one spiral down my back and stays out of the way for awhile before it starts to come apart.

Wearing it down means I have to detangle more and I definitely shed more or cause more breakage from detangling no matter how careful I am. If I wear it down I am detangling several times a day, as opposed to once or twice if it is up.

I know how hairs tangle up when I braid - it's the shorter hairs that work their way out of the braid. It's a nightmare sometimes!

I tend to shed more hair when I do braids and topsytails. I'm not sure if it's just getting pulled out or breaking off? If I do my regular english braid or leave it down I don't get many shed hairs at all.

I find my major problem is my chemical damage. If you look at the last photo I posted in this thread you can see the big difference between my natural and dyed hair. I'd love to finalyl cut it off, but i have no desire to go back to apl.

Here ya go! I made small braids going down the center of my head, and daughter painted the color onto those. What I wanted is ribbons of color, and that's what I got.

I should have joined this thread a few months ago. That initial excitement of growing my hair has gone down but now I'm at a calm happy place with it. I'd say I'm about 2 inches away from classic? I just did a henna n placenta treatment then an SMT after washing. Hopefully it helps that last inch or two. I'm not gonna put any oil in it because I have few special days coming up. I'm charging my camera right now so I won't procrastinate when it comes to taking pictures! I suppose my goal for this year is to get to classic...which shouldn't be to hard. Then trim a bit and perhaps maintain there for a few months until my ends decide to get along with me again:luke:. Then maybe finger tip length? Ha :D Looking forward to it. It took a while but I'm happy with it. My 2A hair still has some waves especially when wet but I'm pretty sure the length is taking some of that away. Its a shame I really started to love them. Glad to be here though! ^_^

I think I can join here now, since like WaitingSoLong I am hovering at TB. In my case I am trying to thicken my hemline. Growing out 3.5 years of semi-permanent dye that I stopped using 2 years ago July. I start to fairy tale about waist length, but with very regular if random dustings of 5 mm I am still slowly gaining length while my hemline is slowly getting better.

did it take you guys long to get from tailbone to classic? I find that for me it takes a very long time (it also took me a very long time to get to tailbone properly) and now I have the same problem with classic. Very fairytaled ends (longest is one inch away from classic) but it looks like only 2-3 inch past tailbone (very annoying). it just feels like most hairs take a lot longer to catch up or so. I also found a million split ends all of a sudden which I cut out. I wanted to reach classic first and then maintain but now I am not sure if I can make it there. I have cut my hair last month (2inches) and now I won't cut this month but next month. So little to go so hopefully I will reach the length in about 6months from now (including the trims I will do).

The thickest part of my hair is around hip length but do you guys think that maintaining at classic will give me a better (thicker) classic length? I know I am not at terminal length because it still grows and a few years ago it was a tailbone but the thickest part a little above waist length.

This morning I just did that measuring I do every two months, and I had a great surprise: the tape showed 46“! Which is one inch longer than my initial goal! For sure, I reached solid classic lately, but I wanted to wait to see the numbers before I made it official...
So there it is!!!!!!!
Some people are asking whether it's long or not to grow from tailbone to classical, but I found it pretty short. I think it took not much more than a year for me, with very little trim and a plenty of other things on which to put my mind. Actually, since I reached BCL in may or april last year, it might have been less than one year between tailbone and classical!
So there is the question: what to do now that I reached my goal? My hemline is not very thick, but it's not anywhere near fairytale neither. I don't really feel the need for a trim... So, let's continue? :D
I'll post pictures soon... I promise.

For me tailbone is 39 inches, and my honey measured for me yesterday at 40. Classic is 45, so I expect to be a little over a year getting there. (Maybe even longer, since I may do some trims to try to fill out my hem.)

Boukje, with no trimming, it took me one year to get from upper tailbone length to classic length. However, I then had to cut back to tailbone because my ends were trashed. This time I am growing with regular small trims, and I hope I reach classic length without damaged snarly ends. In the past, with trimming, I averaged 5-1/2 inches of length gain per year. With no trimming, I gained 7 inches, but it was so damaged that I had to cut it away. I've learned my lesson. For my type of hair, trimming is a must.

I don't know how long it will take to reach classic length with this new plan. Stay tuned.

I've been wearing my hair down--completely--a lot lately. Even and especially to work.

It is MUCH easier on my hair than the twisting and pulling of wearing it up or back.

But that's not really why I'm doing it.

I just like it.

I know that some people (not here, thankfully!) believe that a 57 year old woman shouldn't walk around that way. And in a way, that IS why I'm doing it. I've had this hair for 45 years. It's healthy and happy.

By the way, I realized as I posted in another thread that my signature photo is out of date. My hair is 5 or 6 inches longer than shown in the sig photo, but I'm useless at taking photos of myself and will need to get someone sometime to take another. Unless I get a trim first.

I think I belong here now! My hair has a V hemline, but a good chunk is now at tailbone length.

It's always very easy for me to reach this length, I've been here many times before. But growing from here is torture! I've never made it to classic and I can't wait to see it at that length!

My final goal is knee length... but classic is going to be an awesome milestone!

Finally I can join this thread! I reached 38.25 inches this month and trimmed back to 38, which is tip of tailbone for me. I would've gotten here a year ago but I had nasty thin ends so I trimmed a bit all through last year.

I'd love to reach classic (43 inches on me) but I still have another 6-8 inches of thin crunchy nastiness so I'll probably take my time getting there.

My hair is know at 38,5" which is well below TB on me. :) I just had some growth spurt lately and I have calculated that I should reach classic around the end of the year. I have FTE, but I like them and I will grow them to classic without trimming and when I am there I decide whether to trim or to let it grow for another 6 month until I reach my final goal, where I will maintain to grow out damage from chemical dye.

I am just starting to feel long-haired. :)

I just blow dried my hair a couple of days ago (haven't done that in a long time) and I was really surprised at how much longer it looked when straight. I naturally have a wave plus I twist and bun it when wet so it's spiral curls.

I still don't consider it LONG and I'm about a hand width from classic. The ends are a little whispy and I know I need to cut off a little bit but I just want to reach that classic length!

So I really thought I was going to stick it out in here until Classic but I just am so frustraited with it stuck betwen tailbone and classic. The last length I really liked was hip so I think I'm going to cut it back to that length. how tall are you? yup my hair is almost exactly 41 inches. i am 5'6".. i have longer hip bones than what would be normal for my height since if my back wasnt the way it is, i would be 5'9".. this means i have longer to grow than the average american woman.. i think my canopy just hasnt caught up to the rest of the hair yet. it grows much slower than the rest of my hair.. the last time i got see through ends it was from the canopy being slow..

I am 5'4". Classic is 42" on me I guess, going by measurements several different ways, it all comes out to 42". Longest my hair has ever been is 39.5", a month ago before I trimmed an inch. I am back to 39. I get a consistent 1/2 a month. I have no idea if my thinner ends are canopy growth issues. I just assumed it is breakage. :shrug: Doesn't really matter since I don't plan to do anything about it but that is interesting I never considered a different reason.

Sorry for trespassing in this thread, but from your sig about 6" above the very ends looks like where the top of your U-shaped hemline starts. It might look tapered in a braid, it looks beautiful down. :)

My hair always seems to halt at tailbone. I think a big part of it is because I'm paying more attention to it... much like the old saying, "The watched pot never boils". But, up to this point it seemed to grow incredibly fast. Maybe this is a bit of a plateau point for me.

Gotta just put it up and forget about it for a bit I suppose. Easier said than done.:wail:

LOL I don't have a U shaped hemline. That is just some of my terminal length hairs from the sides of my head. I have had a trim since my sig photo, too. Guess I really need to update that or remove it. I do not trim exactly straight across, there is some curve to it but only about 1/4th inch.

My hair is not yet waist length but I am am on a mission to classic length! My hair was to my tail bone and I felt funny and like I didn't fit in, and cut it to my shoulders :( Two years later and my hair is almost touching my waist. The other day I looked in the mirror and realized that when my hair is hanging from the front it completely covers my breasts and is only about 2 inches from my waist! I have a feeling, my hair will be down to my waist by the end of summer, and touching my tail bone my next spring time. Another 2 years and I will be at my goal of Classic Length. I feel I am half way there! Yesterday my Fiancée commented me on how long my hair is! It's such a good feeling. When I had tail bone length hair I used to be so shy with compliments, but now I love it, I feel so at peace with my body image and hair image now! I feel like long hair makes me more of a woman! I am so inspired by Renaissance Art, I may never want to cut my hair again! I needed to share this with you all!

I, too, have considered fingertip. My original goal was TBL. I have been here awhile. I will probably be Classic by year's end, or "can I call this Classic?". I really like the fingertip look but just don't know if it is for me. I keep changing my mind.

As of now, I have no plans to go past Classic. If I ever get there. My hair seems prety thick until about waist, then it really tapers fast. I wouldn't mind trimming/maintaining awhile to see if that can be thickened up or not.

Then I looked at LadyLongLocks pictures again yesterday. SIGH. Her new preofile pic is stunning!

On the contrary, I find it is easier than ever to make buns at TBL. I&#180;m especially pleased that I&#180;m now able to make looser buns using a four-prong 60th street (learnt how from the lovely Hypnotica). My go to bun is the one in my avatar which I don&#180;t have a name for. (It looks a little bit like a raspberry, so maybe should call it raspberry bun? ETA: unless it already has a name I&#180;m unaware of.) On days that I study at home and don&#180;t leave the house I usually use a braided bun or a lazy wrap. My scraggly ends makes the bunmaking easier as well. Even if they annoy me.

I find I can do some buns now I couldn't before and vice verse.

Nautilus is definitely my go-to but I am forever re-doing it. My hair spits sticks and I do not have the hang of my fork yet. Cinnabuns with spin pins stay all day. So does a hypno-bun if I do it properly. I still do an infinity bun a lot but I use a different method because I have never been able to do the coil method. Unfortunately the video has been removed from YouTube :O(

Lately I have been doing half buns...I twist the hair up in a half nautilus and let the tail hang down. It looks really cute but does nothing to protect my ends.

My go-to has always been a celtic knot. It stays all day without an issue and I'm figuring out how to get the extra ends tucked in now. I was really scared that I was going to outgrow it for a while, but I've got a few more inches at least that it'll work!

I'm about 2" or so from classic, but I'll probably be trimming back here pretty soon. I want to thicken my ends up before my wedding in July. Losing the length is going to be hard, but I think I'll be a lot happier with it.

Hmmm. So far I haven't noticed any diffrence in my buns. One advantage of painfully fine hair, I guess.

I do my...no idea what to call it, but it's my "everyday" style, which is bascially coiled hair pinned forward on my head, and braided buns a lot. Neither has changed, as far as I can tell.

My go-to bun is the Gibraltar, but I've been trying to branch out and try more. I think I've finally figured out the Nautilus. I can do an infinity/figure-8 no problem. Cinnabuns just don't stay well in my hair for some reason.

I´m not sure I can explain it well. It just happened one time I was trying to copy one of Hypnotica´s buns. I like it because it holds well with only one stick, and it is really fast to do. I might try to make a thread of it later, after my exams.

I wore a lazy wrap bun yesterday and today thanks to this thread. Hooray new styles!

TheBluffs, I do my Gibraltar a little differently than 4ypn0tica, but same bun overall. Start with a ponytail, twist your hair, and let it coil around, but settle each coil underneath the previous one, like a bee butt bun. When you've got all the hair coiled up, go back to the first and largest coil on the top of the bun. Grab that coil and gently tug it just a little as you rotate the entire bun in the opposite direction of how you coiled it--just a little bit, like 1/4 a rotation. This will widen that top coil. You can then pull that coil down around the rest of the bun and stick a hair stick through it. Voila, Gibraltar bun, like a rock!

First off, you have my complete sympathy. The same thing happened when I had my last child -- I actually started looking at wigs. It had been a LONG time since my previous child, and I thought I was literally going bald.

I would suggest that you pick a point and maintain there. Your ends will indeed thicken up, though it will take a while. (They're starting from zero, so it's going to take years to get it all to the same fullness.)

Nonetheless, there is no reason to sacrifice your length. Nurture your hair when you can, keep it tied up out of sight and out of danger as much as you can, and try to learn to appreciate wispy fairtale ends until yours grow out.

Even though I had only three hairs at the longest length, I did that...and one day, when the baby was grown enough for me to have alone time again, I took down my hair and discovered that it was looking pretty decent after all. ;)

I sat on my hair again today... seems that after I trimmed it, it's growing back with a vengeance. However, everytime I reach the "sitonit" stage, I seem to find heaps and heaps of split ends? Would this mean that damaged hair is starting to show or it it just a difficult time to grow through?

I would definitely maintain at classic and know that it will grow thicker and gradually come on down. I had big sheds after each of my babies were born, and since it was pre-LHC, I did big chops about 3 months after they were born. Those were my last big chops and I'll never make that mistake again! {Hugs} for the shedding...

Ugh... today I measured my hair. The last time I measured was 6 months ago. My hair is the same length, 35 inches. Fortunately, more of my hair is at that length now. My hemline is a soft U, instead of a V.

But it's frustrating to have your hair grow grow grow fast, and then stall. I'm sure it has to do with breakage and the aggressive S&D I've been doing.

So no more S&D for a while! Here's hoping I actually gain 3 inches over the next 6 months!

thank you so much for all the great comments. I was really feeling down because of the shedding (which is still here at the moment). it is starting to slow down a little now I think. I had it really bad until about 5 months after my first child was born and all of a sudden one day it was gone (and left me with the usual few hairs that I loose every day). Now my second child is a little over 4 months and it is still pretty bad but the bald patches on my head already have baby hairs on them again (when I look closely).

I am happy to see the hairs will grow back (and I won't stay bald forever) but it is still hard to see the ends so thin (it took me many years to get them better). I am a little under an inch away from classic (but it does look between classic and tailbone because it is so thin) so I will let it grow to classic. Not because it will look nice then but then I have reached a big milestone and that makes me happy.

I always wear my hair up so no one will see that it is thin. I plan to maintain it at classic then for at least a year (to see how it will become) and when it thickens up nicely I will cut every other month after that (because my ultimate goal is mid thigh). I know this is a long term plan which will take years but I don't mind. Growing out hair (very long) takes a lot of time and that makes it special. I never thought I would be able to reach classic so I am happy to see I can. it just takes longer for the bulk to catch up I guess. I had the same problem with tailbone too!

I am pretty sure I can reach mid thigh too but that is something for the future. I will ofcourse keep you updated on my progress (and I will make some photographs as soon as I start to trim) to see some progress. so from August I will maintain woohoo!

boukje, I too had shedding after giving birth. I didn´t get bald patches but a general thinning of the hair. Also my hair colour changed and became darker. (Don´t know if the last thing would have happened anyway.) The thickness did grow back!

Hello everyone!:) I've been wanting to join this thread for quite some time now. My hair was at 5 cm from classic, but I had to cut it, due to tapering ends. Now I'm again at tailbone, but my ends seem to be tapering again.:( I think that if I really want to be at classic I will have to accept my ends...

Despite this, my hair loss has significantly decreased from some months ago. I used to shed approximately 100 hairs per day, since I was 10 years old. Now I only shed 10-15 hairs, but I still shed about 100 hairs on wash days...This is my only problem now.

I am annoyed by the fact that it seems I cannot measure my hair properly. Even though my hair is stick straight I get varying results when I measure. :( It is really annoying. Does anyone have a good hint how I can improve the consistency of measuring? With the standard measureing method I seem to have sometimes hugely varying results and sometimes not.

I did trim a about 5mm 2 days ago and I had a 8mm Trimm end of May, My "hemline" was less that 10 hairs, so I decided to trim. Now I have about 25 hairs down there and if I would cut 1" I would have ~100 hairs. It really thickens quite rapidly, but I am still aiming for Classic by the end of the year, which should just be fine. My computer has calculated that I will hit Classic on 31st Dec, but it uses the values where I had a 8 month stall as well as the normal growth rate ones. So it underestimates the growth a bit.

Hmm, I just make sure I place the tape in the exact spot on my front hairline, which is easy since I have a good peak, drape it over the top of my head and hold it there firmly with one hand, then use the free hand to guide the tape down the center of the back of my hair and let the tape dangle. The weight of the end of the tape thing keeps the tape straight. Then I smooth my hair out and down to a point in the back, gathering the tape with it. When I get to almost the end, I grab it firmly then pull it forward and read the measurement.

I have to measure or I swear I am not growing. It amazes me how I can gain an inch or more but it doesn't look even the slightest bit longer.

Can't believe I'm so close to classic. I guess that's what happens when your paying attention to other things haha. I defiantly want to get a small trim. My hair has been a bit dry. While I was staying at DBF's house I showered there for like a month and it got so silky and soft. I haven't changed anything in my routine. I think his water is a lot better then mine here. Which is disappointing and nice at the same time. Can't just buy a small bottle of clean water. Though now I know why it was behaving funky here. I'm over there more so I guess it works out. It gets soft to the point of me being annoyed when it won't stay in up-dos. He washed his hair here and said it gets greasier faster. He also saw how much i comb out there and here and said I comb out way more hair at my house then at his. I guess the water you have has a really big effect. I can't afford a filter especially since I don't live at home much..but I do wonder if a Brita filter would make our water as good as his to use on my hair. Still enjoying my hair. A lot of times I'm with him running around so sometimes it gets neglected in a bun for a bit before I care to redo it. The only thing I really wanna work on is combing more patiently and a way to sleep. I found a scrunchie and that cap I got from Walmart turned inside out (because the outside is for some reason softer then the inside) seems to keep it more tamed then just leaving it in my bun with a hair fork. Not to mention more comfy >_<! Even though it was behaving a million times better at his house I still want to get a trim. I'm thinking it will probably be once I get to classic though. I wish it would hurry up and get there! Then I'm sure I'll maintain there for a short while...and grow to finger tip length. Though I may just do trims while growing. Who knows haha. He can get to be about 15 feet long, but his current length is about average for a male Burmese. They are usually a color somewhere between brown and green (in shades). Albino isn't common (but isn't rare, either). Buster is one of a kind because he only has one eye.

The females can get longer than 20 feet and heavier than 200 pounds! I'm glad we have a male.

The character Daria had beautiful classic length hair, and since my hair was already tailbone, I thought about growing it a little bit longer! Do you wear your hair up regularly? It might be that the ends break when they touch TBL.

Once you are longer than that your ends are free again and don't break anymore.

Another thing might be, to switch to a even more gentle routine. But I would try wearing them in a bun for at least half a year and check if you see any improvement in length.

Well lately I've worn it down/loose because it's been winter/cold so it's like a blanket lol. But now I have a new job (more professional dress) and it's getting pretty hot so I'll be wearing updos and braids a lot more.. maybe that will help. But I doubt it'll grow that much in the next 6 months..

I have only been here about a year, but I feel stalled. I am going to measure after my next wash and see if I have gained any length at all. I have a TBL night cap and my ends have been just peeking out the end of it FOREVER now it seems. I did have a 1" trim a couple months ago. I think, though, I was barely at TBL or "can I call this TBL" a year ago, then it was just below TBL, then the trim, and because my TBL itself is a couple inches or so, it just doesn't seem like I have grown any but I don't think I am at term yet!

I am finding the length from true tb to classic is going fairly quickly (and I'm surprised!). I am somewhere within 2 inches of classic, though I only measure at the end of the month so I'm not sure exactly how far. I was so afraid of a stall or slowdown as I got to this length, but I think my monthly trimming has kept the ends from getting too old and damaged, so the growth is still coming! :cheese:

If your hair grows like that you have an average of roughly half an inch per month, which is similar to what my hair grows. :)

When I hit Classic I will definitly start trimming 1cm every two month to thicken my non-existing hemmline. :p

I trimmed my uneven hemline this week, and now it's all at classic. One chunk of my hair had been roughly at fingertip length (the rest a little bit past classic), but such an uneven hemline didn't look good.
But then, at least I know I can get to fingertip length! I had been beginning to fear I had reached terminal, but I think I've been stucked between tailbone+ and classic for a long time because I didn't use to trim in the past :rolleyes:...But now I'm back to caring for my hair, and I'm maintaining at classic until my ends thicken up more and I get rid of most of the split ends in the last inches of my hair. So I'm staying here for a good while before moving to fingertip and, possibly, mid-thigh (if my hair makes it)! :D

I am a bit unsure of exactly how long Classic will be on me. I have a pic of my hair at 38" and it looks almost classic (like an inch away) yet at 40.25" I am at least 2" still to go. Pics don't tell accurately unless taken from the side I guess. Anyway, so I am thinking I need to mark places on the wall while I am barefoot and standing next to it and then I can just see where my hair falls against the wall? I am sick of measuring. I measure to make sure my hair is still growing but the inches don't really matter to me, as long as it is not stalled.

Chances are I will cut back to TBL once I hit Classic as my ends are geting pretty rough looking.

It took me ages to get from tb++ to classic too (I mean the part of my former uneven hemline that was at tb++, the rest was already past classic...I did a very unexperienced microtrim half a year ago :o). I suppose that hair takes a lot more time to achieve more length at this stage...Don't lose hope, I'm sure you'll be at classic very soon!

My torso is long for my length, I'm sad to say...
But I'm happy with my hair and I'm going for classic, and I hope that my hair keeps most of it's quality and thickness and it will grow that long. :)

This last step to Classic seems to be the absolute longest to endure! I cut off 1 3/4" a couple of weeks ago in the shower. I don't like having thin little ends so when I was in the shower, rinsing out condish where my hair is all hanging straight and coming to a point where the water runs off, I reached back, pinched the point, and cut it off.

I did that for a couple of years, cutting off 2 or 3 inches of the point every few months, and it really made a nice difference in the hemline thickness. (like now compared to my profile pic). I was about 2" from classic but just that tiny bit of an end and that's not what I want. I want it straight across at Classic.

Maybe if I can keep the scissors off of it, get it to Classic and THEN maintain there to thicken it up... :)

It will be much easier than wrestling my bad shoulders around behind my back trying to get a ponytail holder to slide down! I also don't like thin ends and have been doing lots of little trims for the last year trying to thicken my hemline. Your technique will make the job much easier.

pittsburghpam, we can be "maintain-at-classic" buddies when we get there...I keep being tempted to trim more before I get there, but I'm keeping it to 1/4-inch trims each month so I am still gaining length. Once I get to classic, I plan to maintain a while to thicken my ends, if they will.

Either way (trims now or later), you will eventually be at classic with nice thickness...it looks great so far!

The longest of my longest hair has finally touched classic! I will be done my first goal sooner than expect. :D With the way it grows, I will have all of my hairs at full blast classic in 2 months!

I am having stall issues (not completely, more like slowing down) as well and I am seriously considering trimming back to just at TBL because my roots seem to be growing but not the length so it must be breakage. I plan to wait until April, however. My trimming month is April and I only trim once a year. Wow that is so far away...6 months! I change my mind about every week, though. LOL

Funny, my ends don't look horrid. I did an S&D for the first time in months the other day and really didn't have much to do. My last 6 inches have taper/thinness the rest does not. I know the last 6" is also still old dye from several years ago. It needs to go! I should be well past Classic by April but with this stalling, who knows. At any rate, I may as well take a seat as I will be here (this thread) for probably at least another year.

Its fun to be able to sit on my hair, but I don't enjoy when other people can do it too.......that drives me crazy and always forces me to trim back.
I don't think I can ever really get used to it at longer lengths.

I just decided to start trimming now. My ends are finally past my butt, well at least the part where they touched it and now hanging free again. I am not quite at classic yet, about 2"shy of classic, but as the ends hang free again I can start trimming now. :)
I will trim 5mm per month to get rid of old damage and letting slower growing hairs catch up.
Even with trimming I should be able to reach my final goal of 45" within the next year, but hopefully with something I can call hemmline. :wink:

I was not unhappy with way my hair looked then, but now it looks just a bit better and definitely feels more healthy and it's more easy to detangle.

Sounds like a real dilemma!
But maybe you should trim it just a bit or you just reach your goal and have to cut it?
I can only hope your ends not that in such a bad shape as you think, 'cause 1 or 2 inches to go, that's great! :cheese:

Wow, rhodugune, you're absolutely right! I'd guess the second picture at very near classic length.

I'm about ready to get a hair cut, maybe a big one. I'm so tired of fighting split ends. I don't heat style (but I used to), I don't blow dry, I'm gentle and careful, yet still my hair splits and tangles up like Velcro. I hate it! (but I also love it)

Spidermom, I am about there with you but I keep vowing not to (plus DH doesn't want me to cut but that won't completely stop me LOL). Didn't you do a serious cut about a year ago? Like from Classic to above TBL?

It is not really splits for me but the quality of my "old" hair, at least 6" is so inferior to the rest I am so tempted to chop it at times. It is just that I had 4" off one time and I MOURNED my lost hair and so I am afraid to do it again. Plus, when I have too much of a cut, I always have trouble getting my hair into a bun because the ends are NOT velcroe and just slide out. On the other hand, the 4" may have been traumatic because I went in for a 1-2" cut and the lady cut it crooked and by the time it was fixed I had lost 4" so it was not a wanted change.

PLEASE don't cut because then I may not be able to resist cutting! I will never get to Classic that way LOL.

So today I decided to do a "Messy bun". Well it sure was a mess all right. :D I used one thick elastic and 8 metal bobby pins 7 of which must be thrown away. The point of this post is: Do certain lengths of hair just not work for specific styles(question). I would think a messy bun would work for almost any length. It looked cute, but all those pins now in the trash does not sound right to me. :confused: Wait, I forgot I also used two ketyo sticks. Yes! TWO! :rolleyes: *I did want this in the tailbone to classic thread so I would get sisters with my same length~did not mean to change the subject, I'm sorry if this is an error*

I had another reason to not cut for myself, personally (these things I write in a journal so when I am tempted to cut I can remember why I don't and save myself a heartache.). If you look at my album, I have some recent braid pics in there. I REALLY love the look of the double dutch braids that form into one braid and had forgotten I even did that until I looked at the pic again today and at my hair length I think the look is awesome and just don't think it would be as stunning (yes, I am complimenting myself LOL) if my hair was shorter. Funny, the longer my hair gets it seems the more length is eaten up by braids.

I am beginning to wonder if my hair age is just incopable at this length but for now I am blaming it on old dye in the bottom 6 inches. As I said before, my ends are not horrid, but the taper/thinness is really getting bad on that last half foot. I now I am having new-found issues with hair getting into things it never got into before (pants zippers, seatbelt buckles, I am sitting on it from time to time in the right sort of chair) and I refuse to wear my hair up all the time. I am really doing more braids and I think the braid band damage is part of it (there was a recent thread on this topic in which you posted a helpful tip I have yet to try).

I know when my ends get that really frizzy thing going on that I need to clarify. Funny only the ends really show signs of needing it, I guess it is the inferior quality of the old hair. Ironically, of course, is that sulfates (drying) are needed to clarify. I did this last week and my hair is super soft and shiny and slick right now so I know it was not so much damage as build up.

Mine's pretty solidly TB length (BCL at the least) but still looks like hip! For some reason, that's a very important differentiation for me... :( I'm probably going to reach classic at about 44 inches. Hoping that happens sooner than later.

Yay, my longest strands are at classic. Classic is 41" inches on. When it gets to 42" a more definite classic I'll start maintaining.

I did a 1-inch trim with the compact layering method, and then about 1/4 inch off the ends for a Feye U-shape. Then I put my scissors into an inconvenient place and plan to wear my hair up pretty much all the time for awhile. Every time I start S&D sessions, I end up hating my hair and wanting to cut a bunch off.

I finished the evening by massage coconut oil into my canopy and ends, then braided for the night followed by a braided bun this morning.

I'm about 2 inches above classic length now, which is better than 8. I would probably have loved my relatively split-free new ends, but I'm sure I would have missed the length. I felt that I was over "the long hair thing" when I got the 7 inches cut off in March, but I found that I really did miss the length (although not the bad condition of the ends). A hair cut is always plus/minus for me, and I do my best to ignore the minus.

I really like the way my hair looks long but I just don't think it is manageable anymore.

I wore my hair down while I went out today and I fought it the whole time. I had to detangle it about 4 times. Hip was a really good length for me. But I could trim about 3" and still be at TBL.

Funny, depending on what pants I wear, I look Classic in some and nowhere close in others. They are all snug fitting, not sure what the deal is there. Some of them must squash my rear into other places LOL.

I like haivng "butt length hair" and don't really care WHERE on my butt that happens to be. I had really hoped to get to thigh length some day but I am not sure I can handle it. If I can't ever wear my hair loose, I am just not sure it is worth it. I do like braids, though, and may stick with those for awhile. My braid is about TBL now which was a long time goal of mine. I am also over the demarcation line from the sun-in. It has almost been a year and the jaggedly line looks like CRAP when I wear my hair down.

I just bought material to make another sleep cap because I outgrew the one I had (which was Just barely to TBL). SIGH. I will still not do anything. I would never make the 2 week waiting. I will doubt myself until my ends are so fried I have to cut 10". Ok, sorry, just ranting. I am really hating my hair today.

I was wearing my hair down on the beach as well and it tangled, not bad, but it did. I guess that is just normal, as it was quite windy.

I suggest get a got detangler, I use the one from Eqyss (it's for horses but fine for human crossover) and then don't worry too much when enjoying it.

If your ends are in a really bad condition, try S&D them first. If that does help a bit you could also try a silocone product on the ends only to prevent them from tangling.
If nothing seems to help try cutting off 1" only and see how you get on with it.

I'm sorry your hair is hassling you today, WSL. I don't mind wearing my hair up; it's far less of a bother that way. I get through a lot of "I hate it!" days that way. You need something like that, a go-to style that gets your hair out of your way.

I have a fairly high and generously coconut-oiled infinity bun today. So far, it isn't sagging or pulling; hooray!

If I keep my hair oiled, it does not tangle, but I cannot wear it down (because I slather the oil on LOL).

I realized I missed my wash day this week. Perhaps that is the reason my hair is so unruly (where did Tuesday go?). I am about to wash it now, having missed my pre-wash treatment because I simply forgot about my wash day (in my defense, I have been really busy).

I still think TBL is about as long as I prefer it. Maybe even hip. Now that I am sitting on it from time to time (which I always dreamed of doing) I dislike that very much! Especially when it manages to get in the toilet. Plus it is grabbing doorknobs as I walk by. It is just a pain.

Ok, I will stop complaining. I look back and I have really been unhappy with my hair for about a year now. My growth has slowed down this year and I think I will have to maintain at a certain length for awhile until my ends are thicker/healthier or I decide that my hair cannot BE healthy at this length and trim it back to somewhere above TBL.

I will say I have gotten over my urge to shave my head. THAT almost a year. Perhaps my hair is just at a difficult length and once it is past Classic it will be better, but I just don't see how. I am over the "long hair thing" at the moment. I took a break from LHC for about a month for this very reason and maybe I need to do that again.
