Mine don't hold too firmly either, I prefer the holdability of the Nautilus bun.

Looks beautiful littlestarface!! I guess with having so much hair, I can totally see why you were having trouble getting your lwb stay up!! You must have at least an extra foot or more of hair than I do!! I guess this is something I should get ready for, but I might have a couple of years to wait for this.....:rolleyes:

Thanks for posting this, LongCurlyTress. It is nice to have people doing videos out there that are actually useful for all of us beyond waist or hip length hair. Sometimes it's hard to figure out how to do some buns after your hair gets superlong.

So it looks like you are at 37 inches now and I am just a bit behind you at 36inches in length now with 42" is classic on me... I am also a iii like you are and you grew out from a buzz cut at 0"? Funny you mention my length. I just went and changed it because I hadn't updated it in a long time. I'm probably past 41" now. I don't measure often. I think for me, classic is probably 45". I decided to leave my goal length for now. I set that goal when it seemed almost unattainable. Now, if I named a goal, it would probably be terminal unless I find a certain length is my happy place.

I am prone to bun envy. Right now, I have serious bun envy whenever I see a really good Helix bun.

I wish I could do those "fancier" buns, but my hair hangs so heavy and pulls strands with the Helix, pretzel etc. buns... I am only able to afix?? the bun at nape length or a bit higher at occipital, but any higher, meaning the buns that the stick goes through the loop at a higher scalp/crownish level, well they really pull on my hairs and bother me. Please post some action pics of your favorite buns!! I know what you mean about having a bun fixation...lol... I too an enamored with the head eating buns... (I am so funny...rofl) but really, I also love those action pics!!! tee hee...:p ETA... just read that you are measuring at 41inches now!! So you are waaaaay ahead of me... ;) At least a year.... :/

Great growing progression pics!! I also have curly hair, so it is a big deal when our hemline is at TBL imo!!!! There is still shrinkage even when we brush out our curls and it is wavy!! Lovely pics!! and Congratulations!! :crush:

Thanks for the video!! I know what you are saying about those on youtube with thick, perfect strands of gold or dark chocolate... ugh... I didn't get those genes either.. my hair is fine, but there is alot of it... hence frizz, breakage, nesting, tangles, etc... and just plain misbehaving thick- hairy- business pranks.. ;( "A whole hair shantytown" LOL!! I thought I was the only one!! ;) haha... My ytube library is marked private since, well it is a bit embarassing...lol... I keep thinking I will rewatch the ones that keep me motivated, but there are so many new ones that ... well... let's just say I hope ytube doesn't start to limit our library/subscriptions!! :(

Thanks guys! I was kind of bummed it took me this long to get here. My hair grew an extra 1/4” through pregnancy and 2 or 3 months afterwards last time. Unfortunately it not do it this time. Oh well, I got here anyway, right?

LongCurlyTress, I use to be able to get my hair pretty straight(ish) by just doing heavy oilings for 24 hours before a shower, and then twisting it (spinning it?) throughout the day. I switched shampoos with better ingredients, and took away cones to try and bring out my waves. It worked great with the waves, but I cant heavy oil anymore and no more silky straight for me... I must finally really be in the curly club because it goes poof now too! lol Not that it put me anywhere near your mass of curly gorgeousness, but I can wave from a distance :)

It was sometimes this last summer I found out I could start doing more buns and things would actually stay. I tried 2, and now I dont stray from the nautilus. I’m kinda boring.

Sorry! I'm confused too. I did not mean anything insulting. You have amazing hair that I have always admired.
Was the use of the term mass insulting or was it saying my hair poofed too? I only meant mass as it you do have a lot of hair (and everyone wants more hair!). And the poof too comment was that my hair poofs when brushed, whereas when it was weighed down with oils I could brush it fine. Oh wait, was it 'waving from the distance'? I was going for the idea that I am not fully a curly girl and not part of the 'inner circle' and more of an outlier just being a wavy. Let me know if I missed the insult or need to explain more so I can make sure I never word something like that again.

Thank you longcurlytress. The short hair photo only a bit of conditioner (inecto) and a bit of oil.
The long hair photo, I don't know. It was just after my visit of the hairdresser. I think stone clay or wax with a curl cream.

It’s amazing the emotional trauma the topic of hair can bring. I hope you are able to over come the haunting of past underhanded comments and learn to take every compliment as a compliment! 



I fall under the category of putting down my own hair. My first post to you was actually a little to close to that but I did not fully realize it until now. I was aiming to compliment you but I also was trying to minimize my hair. I was not even thinking about it, it is just habit that when talking to 3+ hair to try not compare my hair to theirs (oddly, while actually comparing! lol) and letting them know theirs is superior.

Growing up there was no such term as wavy. Everyone was straight (including loose waves that could easily straighten) or curly. High school in the late 90s was very pro straight, but my area loved (3s) curly too. My hair waves much better shorter and there was no denying my ‘curliness’ at that time, however I was never curly enough to ‘understand what its like to be curly.’ I spent most of middle, high school and college going back and forth from straightening, like my 1c sister, to perming to be like my other 3b sister. I have spent a good chunk of that time span as a iii 3a/b with shoulder length hair. (I dont know my actual thickness from back then but am assuming it was a 4-4.25”) I dealt with the poof and the frizz, and resorted to ponytails on those days but thankfully I did not struggle with any backhand comments about volume. I had a few comments that were not meant negative but I took as such, so I understand the feeling there! My mom will never live down the time she said my hair looked like a poodle. She meant the cut made the waves look exceptionally curly, but I was traumatized! lol

To continue with the race analogy, my wavy hair was like being biracial in the 50s. Neither side really wanted to claim me and pushed me away. Because my wavy hair did not have to volume of theirs, I could not relate to dealing with frizz. Because I chose to be curly when I permed, I did not know what it was like to be stuck with hair you did not want. Because my curls where fake, they must be much easier to manage than ‘real’ curls. No one was really mean to me, just dismissive. Dismissive can hurt just as much. I never came to the conversation stating my hair was just like theirs or I knew exactly what they were going through. I just wanted to talk about what my hair was like too. It became habit that if I wanted to say something positive or negative about my hair, I had to proceed it with how much better or more difficult their hair was just to avoid a lecture.

So now that I am at LHC and despite there being a wavy definition that I fit into, it is hard not to be hurt by someone saying I am not curly. Logically, I understand that saying my hair is not curly is not dismissing my hair texture. I have to assume they are just being more specific and that by the numbering system of 1,2, 3 and 4s I fit the term wavy. Emotionally, it is a tough pill to swallow. It does not help that I have to follow many curlygirl ways to keep my hair happy. They dont call them ‘wavygirl’ ways. It’s right back to the race analogy where I feel part of a culture, but also not really.

After lurking for months upon months, I am finally graduating to this thread. :happydance: Currently sitting at 35 inches, one inch above mid-bum. Classic is around 40 inches (yeah, I'm that short), but since the rest of the milestones are less vague than some of the upper body milestones I might switch to claiming milestones by my full wurly appearance of length after air drying on wash day. It seems more fair that way, for the bottom half of me.

I'm not sure how long I'm gonna be here, if I'm going to keep chopping between tailbone and classic to get rid of my layers or if I'm just going to grow on and live with shredded braids, but I look forward to the journey at any rate. :toast:

Hi Nique!! Welcome and Congratulations!! Once you are on this thread, rumor has it-- that our hair grows faster.... ;) Tee hee... I also have layering in maybe the last 2-3 inches of my hair and for a bit that made me want to maintain at TBL to trim it all off, but what fun would that be? I hope to maintain at classic and do just that since so far, knock wood, those thinner ends are not split or anthing, just thinner due to the layers I cut into my hair in June, 2014... Glad you are over here now!! ;) It's fun to scroll down on this thread and check out the photos for some great length inspiration!! :popcorn:

I appreciate the fact that you opened up, it really sounds heartfelt. Instead of seeing people coming off as hostile or easily offended, it's much better to have some insight about their motivations. It makes you understand that the fact that we all have different stories, is nothing to be afraid of! :)

I can relate when it comes to being left out for not fitting into either category, and how it reinforces the feeling of being "wrong", but I have overcome it. My opinion is that this feeling makes absolutely no sense. People easily label something as "different", "weird", "sick", or whatever divisive adjective, because our culture revolves around conformism. If we have the courage to let go of that "ugly ducking" feeling, to not give a frick about conformism at all, to do and be the hell we want at any given moment, if we don't force ourselves to live under our breath, that's when we shine. People are dismissive? Oh well, there are so many other people in the world. If someone doesn't swallow the concepts of fusion and variety in a world where you can travel thousands of kilometers in a few hours, it's their loss, not yours. 8) :blossom:

Hello! I've been quiet on these forums for a while, but would like to join in on the quest to classic (and beyond!) again.

Sarahlabyrinth, two inches is so close! You'll make it in no time. :)

I'm supposed to have only two inches left, but I must've mismeasured when I originally set my goal (or my backside has grown :P). I'm not in a huge hurry to hit classic though. I've been trimming a bit to help more of my hair reach TBL before setting my sights on classic.

Here's my latest length pic! Shame my photographer didn't think to mention my wonky hairline, but nevermind.

Hello! I've been quiet on these forums for a while, but would like to join in on the quest to classic (and beyond!) again.

Sarahlabyrinth, two inches is so close! You'll make it in no time. :)

I'm supposed to have only two inches left, but I must've mismeasured when I originally set my goal (or my backside has grown :P). I'm not in a huge hurry to hit classic though. I've been trimming a bit to help more of my hair reach TBL before setting my sights on classic.

Here's my latest length pic! Shame my photographer didn't think to mention my wonky hairline, but nevermind.

I know exactly how you feel!! Are you noticing any other "smaller" goals being reached, such as a fuller hemline now with any shorter lengths finally catching up? On months where it seems like my hair is in a holding growing/stall pattern, I am noticing the hemline filling out and becoming thicker...with the shorter hairs catching up... just small nuances, but still growing forward, nevertheless. My hubby says the longer hairs are guiding and encouraging the shorter hairs on how/where to grow longer!! :o

Well, the micro trimming is doing wonders for thickening up my hemline! I have come a long way but still a long way to go. It is wonderful to see an improvement though :) I love that I can micro trim AND still gain length!

LOL... I know... I am always complaining about the runners, how my clumps of hair strands grow in an arrow shape, and I always want to trim the pointy part off and then my hubby says this... lol... I think the amount of patience we need to continue growing onward and downward is so much!! When I see extreme length hair, pretty much classic and beyond, I now have so much respect for the amount of patience and diligence these ladies have had to have.. so admirable!! Cutting is always just such an easy option, but the amount of regret would be incomprehensible..kind of like going off a diet... just when I reach my goal weight... :knit:story of my life...:p

So that is your secret for such a pretty, even, thick hemline! I just trimmed off 1.5 inches in mid -March, and I am hoping to not trim again until 6 months from then... which I guess is in mid -September. Many follow the solstices and equinoxes for trimming so they can remember to do it then... also during a full moon helps too, so I have heard... Well, your hair is very pretty... I can't wait to reach classic as this is my length goal, for now anyways. What is your goal length? :blossom:

@ Saige --That is a great idea to maintain at classic until the rest of the year. I am realizing that my haircare/regime is becoming a bit more challenging at TBL with tangles, longer drying time, thinner hemline as the ends grow unevenly, heavier buns, especially during damp bunning, I just give in now with damp buns and use two claw clips, one on either side since my bun gets so heavy when it is wet... a hairstick just creates pulling on strands when my hair is wet, but claw clips support the weight better. Also wearing my hair down, in a half up seems to get more stares out in public..as in.. wow, that lady's hair is long and so unusual... Men seem to be noticing me more though which is fun when you are 58. Younger gals seem to be a bit more snarky though, especially if they have shorter hair, which is really a riot! Anyways, I am hoping to reach classic in 2018 but already I think that is going to stay my goal length after (hopefully) I grow to there. Good luck and I hope your hair days at classic are healthy ones!

I've also found I have to braid before I bun my hair so it distributes the weight better. At least we can adapt as our hair grows!

I usually detangle when my hair is completely dry. I've found I get a lot of breakage if I detangle when it's wet. I can imagine longer lengths would make it difficult to detangle in the shower :)

Thank you so much Saige for your encouragement! Please don't kill me but I just trimmed off probably over an inch to trim my hemline. So, I am probably back in the waist to TBL thread now... but I am very happy I did this since now my hemline feels really thick and healthy. I think I finally trimmed out the rest of those layers that had been driving me nuts. I think my hemline is now in a U shape but it is hard to tell with my curly hair. Anyways, I just soaked my fresh ends in sweet almond oil and hope to take a new pic once my hubby gets home. I will still stop by this thread to see how you all are doing... but I probably won't be back here for a few months. Good luck everyone with your hair growth! ;)

Personally, I think if you make it to a milestone and then trim less than 2 inches you should be considered an honorary member of the longer-milestone thread anyway. After all, you do intend to come back and it's not THAT far off. :blossom:

I might make it by the end of the year after all... and then probably chop back to where I am now anyway to get rid of more of my layers. But, today I woke up and got sad that I just set myself back at least 3 months when I was "only" 4-5 inches from Classic... ;( Now, my length at 35inches is back where I was in January, so I am a bit discouraged.. however, my hemline is alot thicker now and looks alot neater (siggypic is from yesterday). Hair grows so slowly and I go through this remorse everytime after I trim. Oh well... guess I should go enjoy my fresh ends!! Thank you for your encouragement!! :cheese:

I love my hair long but at this point in my life it's becoming more of a bother than it's worth.

Lol, I feel like such a quitter, tapping out when I'm less than 2 inches from classic. (I'm classic when wet, if that counts for anything...) You'll still find me lurking around here, though. I want to wish all of you the best of luck in your hair endeavors, and happy growing! :flower:
Oh no!! I know exactly how you feel, but trust me... a couple of inches will give you the change you are seeking without the trauma.. You would be surprised just how much different and more manageable your hair will be with just a couple of inches shorter.... maybe just do this first.. and trim gradually??

I am 3b, but F and iii like you are and I know all about the tangling, at TBL ... I hope you try to just trim a couple of inches first... hold with that for a few weeks before going any shorter. You have worked and loved your hair for so long to grow it to this length!! ;) Hugs!!

Well, most of my layers have reached my tailbone (and slightly past) and I've decided I want to grow it to classic length, so I'm joining this thread. I don't think I'm going to go any farther than classic, but as soon as my hair is that long I'll be working on getting rid of these horrible layers. I'm going to try doing a micro trim myself next week. I hope I don't mess it up and get terribly uneven ends, but if I do, at least I live right by a Great Clips. My hair is so thick that I still can't squeeze it into a lot of buns, so I definitely want classic length. I also have a short torso, so my hair is probably shorter than I think. I'm going to buy a soft tape measure soon to see how long it really is.

I think I may join this thread too. My shortest hair is about hips, the rest TB and longer. The longest Part of my V-Cut ist halfway down to classic. I don't know how far I'm going. I have very thick hair so I will keep my V-cut. But once in lifetime I want most of my hair classic length. When I have reached that goal... Don't know.

GORGEOUS! :) Its hard to type hair like yours especially when it's so long. I wonder what it would look like shorter... is it curlier? If so when you type it I'd lean on the curlier side because even if your hair stretches with length, it's still the same hair type and curlier hair need to be treated more delicately.

Well, the waves are more bouncy when its shorter, I suppose, but definitely not curly. I don't really have any pictures of the waves when it was shorter. The thing is, I never knew my hair was wavy until I joined here and did my first hair-typing. Then, I never bothered to learn how to keep the wave pattern intact, so after I stopped handling it when wet it still usually looked more 1c-2a. (If you really want to see it, here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=10663&attachmentid=23520)'s my only hair typing pic from when it was shorter, but it was a bit damaged and the layers make it difficult to see the wave pattern.)

Technically, if I take a small section of hair and wet it, then let it dry while holding it away from my body so it's not touching anything, its a stretched out ringlet.

It is fairly susceptible to damage (mechanical being the only kind of abuse it's subjected to anymore) so I try to be careful. My biggest hair-sin is my hairbrush. I keep trying to give it up, but I just haven't been able to yet.

In regard to the 'when to detangle' question, I brush my hair twice very throughly before I shower, with something similar to a tangle teezer in terms of bristles but my father told me he and his brothers used in the late 50s/early 60's. I then use this comb/brush hybrid to help me wash out shampoo, and get conditioner evenly through my hair. I bun my hair while it's wet and put a towel around my shoulders to catch any water that runs down my neck. I usually do this before bed, when I let my hair out to dry overnight. I don't brush my hair until after it dries again. For reference i have thick 2ish hair (it gets distorted due to my constant bunning, so I'm not entirely sure)

The bun in my avatar is a cinnabun held with U pins, the twists are kind of like 'Edwardian style twists'.

So, I have a few questions: should I just cut to the bottom of the layer and be done with it? I'd cut to just above the dotted line. This would kick me out of the tailbone club :o
Should I alter my hem line to have a U instead of a blunt cut? Would it look cuter/more interesting?
Do U hems make it hard to braid/bun?

I always felt my hair felt longer when I would cut a bit to thicken the hem so personally I would trim enough to get the hem you want! But it just depends on what you prioritize more, length or an even hemline/ no layers :) For me, I never found a slight u-hem made braiding or bunning more difficult. I guess it's not as drastic as having layers in terms of having different length hairs

You're welcome! The reason I agreed with cutting it is the same thing Caraid said: I feel my hair is longer after I trim because the ends are blunter. Hmm, if you want to still wear it down, you could try side twists to jazz it up. That's what I do when I want my hair to look fancier.

You can cut a tiny bit lower than the dotted line. I wouldn't cut anything off the right bit and even the rest up with that small piece.

Oh :p i didn't even think about it! I'm glad it stands out just the same ^-^ I wear all sorts of funky things, and never really paid much mind to how my hair looked on it. The dress is actually a mustard/goldenrod type yellow, I'm sure if I wore a light taupe or khaki something my hair would hide more.

Totally shocked me to discover that it's grown so much, I knew that my hair was fast-growing, but that's 9" in less than six months!! Is that even possible? I don't take hair-growth supplements or anything, I thought that 6" per year was considered average??

Either way, it's hard to actually see the growth since my hair super curly and my shrinkage hides at least half the length, but I figure if it's tailbone stretched, I'll call it and check in with everyone here. I don't have a recent length photo now, I'll try to get one soon.

Considering it's growing at an inch and a half per month rather than half an inch per month, that's three times faster than the average growth rate! Awesome! Though my instincts say there's a possibility of mismeasure, but if not, then wow!

You could be right about a mismeasure, especially with curly hair where it's hard to say whether it's ever completely stretched out, it could have been longer to start off than I had thought. Either way, it's now at tailbone and it wasn't before, so I'm happy!

I keep flubbing when I try to get a picture of my hair pulled straight for length comparison, but I finally compared wet to bun wurls (its usual state) and I don't get as much shrinkage as I thought I would, at least? Just a couple of inches.

The wet shot also makes it clear how much layering I have with the visible thinning. The bun wurls make it look nicer, but I'd definitely be happier with the hemline if the bottom 5-6 inches were chopped off the bottom. But, that can wait until the end of the year or next spring when it won't throw me back into the previous thread. Then it's chop-chop time. :patrol:

Congrats Agnes!!! Thought I'd check in with everyone. I've been dealing with more mid-shaft breakage (1-2 inches above my ends) and have been doing some aggressive S&D and some microtrimming to get ahead of it.


I also did two Olaplex #2 treatments (my hair isn't dyed, just fragile). I've microtrimmed 1/8 inch a week the past 3 weeks. I think I'm finally getting on top of it, because my hemline looks loads better. I'm still hovering around TBL right now.

ETA: I just measured my hair and I'm 36 inches. Classic is 42 inches on me. 6 inches of growth is not likely before the end of the year, I'm afraid.

The hair at my temples is very fine and wispy compared to the rest of my hair. All of my hair is actually thinner than it normally is because of stress and poor diet.

She really didn't take off much, but the girls at work always tease me about how I don't really get a hair cut. so I took a picture of the floor bits :p
It seems a lot longer, even though it's shorter, and I think it looks thicker too. Plus it's less straggly and I like that. Since she didn't cut ALL the ends I ended up with a softer hemline than I do when I get a real blunt cut. I like it a lot.

It looks great! That is exactly what i plan to do... cut my hair a couple inches once it's a bit past tailbone to even out the hemline. It really does look longer and so thick and beautiful!

I keep flubbing when I try to get a picture of my hair pulled straight for length comparison, but I finally compared wet to bun wurls (its usual state) and I don't get as much shrinkage as I thought I would, at least? Just a couple of inches.

The wet shot also makes it clear how much layering I have with the visible thinning. The bun wurls make it look nicer, but I'd definitely be happier with the hemline if the bottom 5-6 inches were chopped off the bottom. But, that can wait until the end of the year or next spring when it won't throw me back into the previous thread. Then it's chop-chop time. :patrol:

I'm TBL now, and about 5" from classic, I believe. So another year of growing until I hit my goal. My most recent length shot is my sigpic from May, and my hair's definitely grown since then. I think at the end of this month, I'll do another length check-in.

Thank you for the positive comments :) Having hair this length is really enjoyable for me, scraggly ends or no, I do love it. I sport bun waves pretty much all the time because I'm at war with my natural texture(s).

Yes, the hair at my temples is different. It is thinner, curlier, a different color, and breaks easily. If all my hair were like the hair at my temples, then I'd have to baby my hair to the extreme or not be able to grow long hair at all. Postpartum, all that hair shed and is growing back now. I don't really mind that it doesn't grow long since I like a fringe.

I don't think there really is an average. It varies widely. I have about 5 or 6 inches I think? It depends on body shape a lot.

Also, I think some people call TBL at different places, so that makes it vary more.

For me there's only about half inch difference at the most between BCL and TBL so I decided to just wait until it was touching the end of my coccyx. I'm also going by my longest layers, not the middle or shortest. Even with my layers my hair isn't that thin at the ends, so I figured it was fair enough.

I can't wait to get to classic :p. I have a bit of an ambitious goal of classic by 2017. I suspect my hair grows about an inch per month, but I only just started to measure my hair today. If my hair is closer to the .5in average per month, I likely won't hit classic by 2017. I'm still debating on maintaining at classic until my layers are gone or just growing it out slowly while microtrimming.

That depends on the person. TBL, at least where I can actually feel the end of my coccyx, is about a half inch or an inch lower than BCL. For some people it's a bit more and for other's it's the same. It's like how classic is the same as finger-tip length for some people.

Congrats ;) you'll get to TBL before you know it. What's your goal? Mine's classic (43" for me), but I'm really thinking about growing to the middle of my thigh (48"). I'm thinking I'll probably end up going to 48", but I'm going to see how classic looks first. I also have to figure out when I want to try and trim out my layers and how gradually to do so.

Thanks, Decoy! My first goal is Classic at 42" for me. Once I almost got there, but that was before I wanted to grow my hair really long. It just grew so fast those days, but that's years ago.
My second goal is knee or just above knee, whatever is more becoming on me. And if my hair will grow that long... That is some 10" more, around 52-53". That will probably be my final goal, but who knows ;-)

Yeah, my hair length goals have been in a near constant flux since joining this forum. At first I thought I would just keep my hair at this length and grow out my layers... then I started wanting classic, and now mid-thigh. I have long thighs, but short/stubby calves, so I think anything knee or below might make me look a little stubbier than I already am :p. I have a hunch that I could probably grow my hair to knee with blunt ends and that my terminal is very very long, but I don't think I'll ever grow my hair to terminal. I like the look of thick, blunt ends.

I think the point is that waist-length on person might be tailbone-length on another, though I could be wrong. If you look at the graphic, the line that marks waist on the right-most figure is about level with the tailbone of the middle figure.

its more showing that body proportions are different on different people. not that one person's tbl is also their hip, but figure3's waist is between bcl and tbl on figure 2...even tho they're around the same height because of leg proportions and body length.

on the same body, if you have short arms,or are rather round, ftl can be classic.

Well I am rejoining this thread. I was maintaining between TBL and hip awhile and have finally decided to grow longer again. It will be a short stay, I think. Probably only until the first of the year when I should be Classic.

I am on a regrowth journey having cut back from FTL to waist some time ago to get rid of bleach. I had layers put in after that to finally remove all of the bleachy bits. I am now growing virgin color hair. I have been slowly trimming out the layers so have not gained much length in the last couple years. I still have about 3" of layers but they are not bothering me and help my ends stay in updos.

TBL is 38"
Currently 38.5"
Classic is 42"

I am toying with growing longer than I have before, which would mean surpassing 45" (FTL). We will see.

I get short-hair envy pretty easily. I have to NOT look at such pictures. It is usually APL to BSL that lures me.

I'm in a similar place, I was just past TB then cut back and have been maintaining at hip-ish for over a year but I'm pretty much back at TB now and thinking of going for Classic, which was my original goal.

I think it's personal preference. Other curlies can chime in, but it seems like some people like to call it unstretched and some stretched. You kind of get double the milestones that way!

I'm not sure I understand. Why is it a problem that waist and classic are so far? Waist is usually quite far away from classic. Even on my unnaturally short torso at 5'2" it's about 13 inches, so for anyone taller or with more average proportions it should be even further. You may even be measuring your waist too low (it should be the narrowest part of you, or where your torso folds when you bend or twist, usually near the bottom of the ribcage).

I'm 5'4". Waist to Classic for me is ten inches (32/42). Classic to knee for me is 8" (42/50). BSL to waist is about 6" but I have not measured BSL, it is a very inconsistent mark to measure, every bra is different. I am not sure what bust level would be either. I have shortish legs going by the fact that most pants are always too long for me. My torso seems to be a bit long going by most shirts being too short for me. TBL is where my half-height is.

I only made 1/4 inch growth this month, so I finally gave in to the chop urges I've been having since March and trimmed about 1.5 inches. As soon as my brain gets over being disappointed in my inability to stick to a goal (a problem I've had my whole life) I'm sure I'll feel much better about this decision. :laugh:

I'm not sure if I want to maintain around tailbone (I'm about a half inch short now) until more of my layers are gone, or chop back to BCL (especially if you'd all still have me as honorary tailbone, since some folks still call tailbone at that length anyway), or see if my hair will start to gain more length again. I'm gonna think deep and self-reflect for a couple of weeks before I take out the scissors again, for sure.

I called tailbone in Sep of 2014 and only now it is tailbone when dry and unstretched (past classic when stretched) on first day of wash--it shrinks on subsequent days to any length it wants.

Sounds like your hair and my hair are in the same stages. I have about 3" of layers left but I am letting them be. They will eventually get trimmed out. The 1/4" growth is super annoying. I grow better in summer, it is in winter my hair stalls or crawls. My solution? Stop measuring. I know, that is really hard, but it is what it is whether I measure or not so why stress and obsess?

As far as sticking to goals? Well, here is my life's motto: I can only make the best decision I can with the information I have at the time.
The fact is, life is constantly changing and throwing other things at you, you know, the whole "best laid plans of mice and men" thing. Changing your mind is not a bad thing, it shows flexibility to be able to assimilate new circumstances. But...

I suspect maybe you are talking more about self control. In that case, perhaps set yourself some attainable goals that do not take months (like hair) and practice the self control thing.

Otherwise, just ignore everything I say because YMMV. :lala::magic:

I am currently hovering at TBL-- 37inches and classic on me is 42inches. I measure my length stretched out since imo the hair is actually that length and otherwise the length is too inconsistent when curly/wavy...:D:p Plus the curls/ringlets are dropping out due to the weight of the length. So... imo a hair's length is exactly what it is when stretched out. :wigtongue

My hemline is starting to get very raggedy and I am trying to resist the trimming urge... since it isn't really split... just very uneven probably due to the layers I am still growing out:rolleyes: (See siggy pic.)

If you look at it closely, it's not real clear in the siggy photo, the hemline has layers still in it that are 1 inch apart throughtout the last 2-3? inches of length. I hate it when I do a braid tassel and the different lengths stick out and the braid tassel is... no joke ... about an inch at the most-- in circumference compared to 4 inches at nape!! No joke! ugh...:disgust: But thank you so much anyways!! :flower: The actual hemline edge is sort of even due to 1.5 inch trims every few months... but the layers are still in there...;( sigh.... :alcoholic:

Awww Nique!! I am kind of in the same boat as you are... 37 is TBL for me and the bottom part of my hemline is reaching at that length... but like you, my hemline is in layers that are growing out so only the very tips of the ends are at TBL .... but I won't trim those ends off. I almost did last weekend but DH wouldn't let me!! ;) He is my official brusher/photographer/measurerer.. and wants me to wait until those ends reach classic and then I will trim off an inch or so to even off the hemline. Are your ends splitting? tangling excessively? If not, then just let them be, even if your hemline is uneven and inbetween trims. That is what I am doing...;) Just wanted you to know you are not alone with hovering at TBL and dealing with layers still growing out. :/

If you look at it closely, it's not real clear in the siggy photo, the hemline has layers still in it that are 1 inch apart throughtout the last 2-3? inches of length. I hate it when I do a braid tassel and the different lengths stick out and the braid tassel is... no joke ... about an inch at the most-- in circumference compared to 4 inches at nape!! No joke! ugh...:disgust: But thank you so much anyways!! :flower: The actual hemline edge is sort of even due to 1.5 inch trims every few months... but the layers are still in there...;( sigh.... :alcoholic:

Sounds like your hair and my hair are in the same stages. I have about 3" of layers left but I am letting them be. They will eventually get trimmed out. The 1/4" growth is super annoying. I grow better in summer, it is in winter my hair stalls or crawls. My solution? Stop measuring. I know, that is really hard, but it is what it is whether I measure or not so why stress and obsess?

As far as sticking to goals? Well, here is my life's motto: I can only make the best decision I can with the information I have at the time.
The fact is, life is constantly changing and throwing other things at you, you know, the whole "best laid plans of mice and men" thing. Changing your mind is not a bad thing, it shows flexibility to be able to assimilate new circumstances. But...

I suspect maybe you are talking more about self control. In that case, perhaps set yourself some attainable goals that do not take months (like hair) and practice the self control thing.

Otherwise, just ignore everything I say because YMMV. :lala::magic:

Stopping measuring is easy enough, and another thing I'm thinking about now that I'm not tracking my distance to classic actively. But, my brain has faulty wiring (as I like to put it) so it's not as easy as changing my mind or self-control after I set a goal, I have a lot of guilt and shame and "you can't give up on THAT" attached to goal-setting which sends me into some bad mental spirals. That's why it's so frustrating for me, and why I really need to learn my lesson and avoid setting specific goals in the future. If it's not attached to a goal I have no problems with flexibility in general, it's just this one quirk that my childhood burned into me. (But thank you for the suggestions anyway. :heart: )


Awww Nique!! I am kind of in the same boat as you are... 37 is TBL for me and the bottom part of my hemline is reaching at that length... but like you, my hemline is in layers that are growing out so only the very tips of the ends are at TBL .... but I won't trim those ends off. I almost did last weekend but DH wouldn't let me!! ;) He is my official brusher/photographer/measurerer.. and wants me to wait until those ends reach classic and then I will trim off an inch or so to even off the hemline. Are your ends splitting? tangling excessively? If not, then just let them be, even if your hemline is uneven and inbetween trims. That is what I am doing...;) Just wanted you to know you are not alone with hovering at TBL and dealing with layers still growing out. :/

That's the thing, I tried to just let the ends be, for the whole year so far. I don't have any significant amount of splits or visible damage at my ends, but the thinness was what was bothering me so much. That, and not being able to trim at all because of the goal I'd set.

I don't just have a couple of inches of layers at the bottom of my hair, either. My layers are spaced out over the whole bottom foot or so of my hair. It looked fairytaled (which I can appreciate on others but I don't want MY hair to look that way) even though each individual strand had no thinning toward the tip. Extremely deep and evenly spaced layers, as a result of a modified compact cut.

I usually tell folks to wait it out, too, but sometimes it's not that easy, and those times it's more important to be happy with your hair in the short term (by means of trimming) and put off the long term goal a bit so that you don't drive yourself literally crazy with frustration in the meantime. For me, that meant some of the bottom of my hair had to GO. Everyone's got different needs, that's all.

On the plus side, with a couple of days' reflection on the situation, and after a wash and air dry, I am much happier with my hemline after the trim. As I knew I would be. It looks visibly thicker, even though hardly anything came off. From here I'm gonna take it week by week and see if/when I really feel the need to trim more off. If I don't, then I grow. If I do, I'm not gonna let it build up for seven months again. :laugh:

Thanks!! I trimmed an inch + at the end of May? something like that... and here it is 2 months later and now I can tell that it needs it again, but I am just going to say no!! And put it up....;)I find that if I leave it down, I obsess on the ends more, brush them more, look at them more etc... pontificate about them more...lol.. so just going to leave them up and try to forgetabout them since they are not split/tangling/excessive shedding during detangling, etc... Hopefully I will trim in December at the moon equinox or something that avante garde...;) Thanks for your encouragement...;)

I know how you feel...my layers have almost grown out/been trimmed out... but they were 10 inches into my length.... so you are in a different situation I guess than I am now... mine are in the last 2-3 inches now... I did trim 1 1/2 inches every 3-4 months to get them out... so yes, that does help to even and thicken up the hemline as you are growing out your layers. Don't worry! Eventually, they will be trimmed out. Guess we have to learn our lesson the hard way to trim as needed for our own hair growing success. I know that is how I am!! Well good luck growing!! The time will pass quickly and your layers will be grown out!!

I had to do another trim after all but only a fairly small one (about another 1.5 inches) and it made the world of difference. The hemline looks thick when loose and doesn't even look ultra thin when wet, my braid tassel isn't 6 inches long or tapering down to nothing unless I do a REALLY poor job of distributing it at the start, and I'm about 1000 times happier with it overall. It does set me back to not much past BCL/traditional tailbone stretched, pretty much where I was at the beginning of the year really, but it still touches my lower back after my wurl shrinkage so I can live with it. Now I feel like I can stop measuring my hair every month and just set myself on the road to classic for real and at my own pace, whatever that might be.

So, I'll probably still lurk in this thread (mostly because I spent so long there that I don't want to go back to waist to tailbone again :wigtongue ) until my usual bun curl pattern looks tailboneish and then I'll be back for realsies. :cheer:
