Young and Silver

A piece in today's Times by a writer from Vogue UK who started going grey in her teens: here (http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/beauty/article6861713.ece) – her hairdresser refuses to colour her hair :) And the news (I hadn't realised so I may just be out of date) that supermodel Kristen McMenamy (http://www.bigshinything.com/tag/kristen-mcmenamy) has gone grey.

Both of 'em are long hairs. :D

I started going grey at 16 but I had alot of stress and a VERY tramatic childhood, so that could be the cause...

I would like to see Ms. McMenamy in more normal makeup and smiling. Well, and maybe a bit of conditioning treatment on her hair. The other young woman is truly beautiful and her silver hair is a knockout.

Wouldn't it be great if we could see more real hair color?

I think gray can be very beautiful. What makes is beautiful is that the hair is taken care of and not just fried and Poodle-Poofed up and out of the way. A picture of her smiling, I agree, would be nice.

The hair looks nice, but the makeup and scowl makes her look like an angry man with long hair. Think villain from 80s science fiction movie (especially with the ugly suit).

Kirsten's career has not been based on being the ordinary sort of "pretty" – she has her own look, and (from interviews I've read) a sharp mind and a great sense of self.

I went grey at 19 and I hated it...back then it was all the rage for lads to streak thier hair greay and everyone commented on how natural my streaks looked...if only they knew...although I'm the one laughing now because I'm the only bloke with any hair left on his head hahahaha...

I'm 34, and already starting to go gray, and I just recently stopped dyeing. I figure that since I plan to grow out my hair, I might as well stop dyeing it at the same time that I start growing it out to get all the hair trauma over with at once! The gray right now is sparse enough that I won't have TOO much of a "skunk stripe" when I grow it out, but if I wait too long, I'm going to get more and more gray and it'll be waaaaaay harder to stop coloring.

yup I can relate. although I am going white. We don't even go grey. Runs in the family. By the time I reach mid twenties I will be completely white. I haven't decided if I am going to dye it yet. Right now its manageable.

I feel the same way, I actually just posted on here a few weeks ago after spending 20 minutes plucking out all my grays :rolleyes: It runs in my family too, my mom started going gray at 16 and so have I. Just recently they started coming through more. My mom dyes her hair so much, she hates doing it, but she doesn't want to be gray.. I think I'd like to try and embrace it.

So I do have a question, mine are kind of wiry, do they get softer as they get longer? They are around 2" long now.. well, the ones that hid from my tweezers :p

Yes, the silvers are always wiry when they are new. After you let them grow (and don't pull them out!! :D) they get nice and pretty and long.

My silvers have been showing at scary speed after my children were born. I’m about 60% gray and do my roots every 15-20 days. At this moment, I don’t plan to go gray, but I cannot imagine doing my roots every 15-20 days the rest of my life. Kristen is really gorgeous, and an inspiration. Thank you for pointing her out :)

^^^I agree. :laugh: I searched and searched and couldn't find a smiling pic of her. They've trained all the smiles out of her! :p

I will testify that the silvers soften up and start to lie down once they're a little longer.

It is interesting the Ms. Mc seems to have deliberately built a career around her grey hair, partly at least. I realize not everyone can do that, but... very interesting. I applaud her for keeping it when it would be so easy for her to have a different color.

It depends on the person's hair, some have gray that changes texture and others don't.

Our hair grays in individual ways, just like the model Kristen, who has grayed evenly instead of in patches.
