I was looking at hair darkening threads here on LHC and one provided a link to this site about this hair oil
http://www.keralaayurvedics.com/medicines/thailam/neelibhringadi-ayurvedic-hair-oil.html

It sounds pretty good. Does anyone here use it? If so, where do you purchase it from. I tried checking Amazon but couldn't find.

Thanks so much.

I have used Neelibringadi oil for 2 years now with brilliant results. I use the Kama Ayurveda brand. I bought it online in the U.K and then realised I could get it much cheaper direct from India, which is what I went ahead an did. I bought in bulk.

Don't know where you get it in the U.S but there are a few folks here who use it, one of whom is in NYC. Perhaps she will respond.

what kind of results are you getting with this oil...what is it for in other words...reduced shedding, faster growth, conditioning on ends, all of the above? :)

I see from the ingredients that it has indigo in it. I guess it makes hair darker somewhat after long term use.
Gee, I think I need to buy some indian oil someday, these things seem to be really good.

Where does find this oil at a reasonable price in/to the US? I've always wanted to try it but it's hard to find online and off.

About 40% of my hair is white (which I love) and Neelibringadi, despite it's indigo content, does not darken my hair at all.

I have kept up the use of this oil because it has significantly decreased me shedding from approx 250 hairs per day to between 10 and 40 hairs per day.

The conditioning effects on both hair and scalp are marvellous. If the stench wasn't so bad I would use this oil as a leave in 24/7. Unfortunately it is a very strong smell that permeates my house, my clothes and even my dog! That, however, is my only complain about this remarkable product.

I've found it on Ebay, 5.99 plus 4.99 shipping. Is this a good price? Has anyone found a less expensive place to purchase in The States?

Umm.. Hi. :waving:

I use Kama Ayurveda Neeli too, like Othala. It's not the cheapest brand by far but the cheaper ones I found have antimony in them and that's not good. Kama neeli costs $26 here and got mine at the New London pharmacy in NYC. I don't know where to get it online but the Kama site lists the stores where it's products can be found. The oil is called "intensive treatment" on the label.

Ok, found it online here (http://www.zenessence.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ka-iht&Category_Code=ka-00) and here (http://alcanz.com/Alcanz/ShopCart/ProductCart.aspx?ty=B&PID=152).

Othala, where do you order it to get from India? It seems cheaper that way.

I second all the above in that it makes hair smoother and reduces shedding.

Hi there! :) Thanks so much for the helpful reply. I am possibly going to put this oil on my list to get for Christmas, along with some new shampoo bars :)

Neelibhringadi oil is used for hair loss. I have heard great things about this oil and most indians have used this to help with shedding, it prevents dandruff and helps with premature graying. The ingredients are Indian gooseberry (amla), coconut milk, eclipta alba (bhringraj), among others. You can get a 200ml bottle for 9.95 and shipping is dependent on the weight of the item. You can get it at indiaabundance. com

Ok, so 7 ounces for 9.95 is an ok price but how much is the shipping? I tried adding the product to my cart but it still won't show me what the shipping rate would be.

Thank you for posting the site and the oil ingredients... sounds lovely!

Hi Sissy, I don't know if you have already ordered from India Abundance or not but I did. I ordered 38.00 of oils for my hair (5 bottles total) and my shipping was 8.00. The shipping was fairly quick considering it came from India! It landed in NY first so you would get it quickler than I did. I hope this helps...
oh, and the Neeli oil stinks, LOL..won't stop me from using it but it does!

I'm going to bump this way old thread chiming in that i have bought the Kerala Ayurveda bran of neeli oil and it is fantastic. I saw results from the first night in sleeping with it in. My usual shedding of about 160+ hairs a day went down to less than 20. :)
It still works and it's been a month.

eta- it does have a strong smell but i LOVE the smell. It doesn't list sesame as an ingredient, but i think that it smells a lot like sesame and freshly cooked bread. That may just be me. I looooove the smell, though in the morning i find it can get rancid while i sleep with it on, and it smells more like vomit. Ew. lol

I just bought some Neelibhringadi oil for Hair Loss and Hair Fall and I am going to start using it Thursday or Wednesday. From what I read online it is suppose to be used as an overnight pre-wash scalp oiling, so I will wait until my next wash. I'm so excited to reduce my shedding, everyone who mentioned using this oil has said they've seen dramatic effect in shedding being reduced. I will come back and report my results as soon as I have some. Also, I wanted to bump this thread especially since fall shedding should be here for some of us, so I thought it might be a good time to bring this thread back. :D

Have you used the neeli oil yet? I hope you get great results.

I was also wondering if Indiaabundance.com is a good place to order from. They sell two different brands of Neeli oil though I'm not so sure if they contain antimony so I'm hesitating to order.

Yes I have. It's working great, better than I expected. I see a significant decrease in shedding after only 2 applications (a 50% decrease). I'm sold on this stuff. It's awesome. I got mine from here: USAIndiaStore (http://www.usaindiastore.com/proddetail.php?prod=Neelibhringadi) (and it doesn't seem to have antimony from looking at the ingredients). :D

I would love to know this as well, because I ordered some awhile back from that site. I've used it once, very lightly, on my scalp. I didn't notice any adverse effects, but I'm concerned now too and don't think I'll use it again until I can figure it out. Doesn't appear that the ingredients are listed on the site, so makes me slightly suspicious.

Which one did you buy? They sell 3 brands.

The Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakal Neelibhringadi Hair Oil lists these ingredients.
- Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), coconut milk, Eclipta alba (bhringraj), Cardiospermm halicacabum, Centella asiatica, Bacopa monnieri, Indigofera tinctora, Glycyrhiza glabra, Abrus precatorius

I don't see the dreaded antimony, also called anjanakal. But I'm not sure if they have listed every single ingredient. I'll look it up in Google.

The other brand sold on that site is the Kerala Ayurveda Neeli Oil. It has a small pic of a woman on the label.

The ingedients are mentioned in the description but I don't know if all of them are. It says "This blend also includes a number of herbs to support and augment the effects of bhringraj. Principally among these are Amalaki, Brahmi, and Neeli."

The use of "among them" makes me think not all are listed.

The third brand they sell, the bottle with the white lid, well they've listed these ingredients:

1. Coconut oil
2. Sesame oil
3. Cow milk
4. Neeli (Indigofera tinctoria)
5. Bhringraj (Eclipta alba)
6. Shatakratulata (Cordispermum helicacabum)
7. Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)
8. Yastimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
9. Gunjamula (Arbus precatus)
10. Daruharidra (Coscinium fenestratum)

I don't know too much about herbs but I don't see any antimony/anjanakal. But then again the website copied the description of the second brand I mentioned and pasted it again into the third brand's description box, so I don't know if I fully trust it.

Hi, yeah, I was also concerned with the "among them" language - what else is "among them"? However, I was looking at my bottle the other day and realized that the ingredients are listed right there. I don't see antimony or anjanakal among them, so that does make me feel a bit better. I also googled hair and antimony...so it's toxic, eh? I now almost want to just toss the bottle to be on the safe side, just in case.

McFearless

Hey yes its toxic, but if it isn't listed in the ingredients I think you'll be safe. See if you can find any more information about the brand on Google.

ETA: Time for an update! :D

I use it as an overnight pre-wash scalp oiling. After the first time I used it my shedding decreased noticeably, by the second use I was shedding half as much as I was initially and after the third use I was shedding about 25% of my old shedding rate. My main problem has always been how much I shed during washing so that's the one I notice the most. But even daily shedding is low, I went from 100-150 hairs per day to about 10-30 hairs per day.

Things to note: the smell is truly potent and in my opinion not pleasant at all, it does make my scalp tingle a bit in a nice way and gives it a nice cooling sensation.

Here are some journal updates marking my experience so far. :D

Wed.10.05.11 8:28am
[...] I also ordered Neelibhringadi oil for Hair Loss and Hair Fall which someone on LHC said it made her hair loss decrease dramatically. I will be using that in stead of black tea, because I'm genuinely scared of my shedding at this point.

Wed.10.12.11
Well the oil has arrived and (as I type this) it is on my scalp. I must say it smells pretty bad, but it gives me a cooling sensation which is nice. So apparently I have to use it overnight, every other day for 1-6 months to see results. This worries me because I lose hair during scalp massages, that is probably the main reason I lose so much hair when I wash it. I guess it would be worth it in the long run if it means I will restore my hair to its old glory.

10.15.2011
I started Neelibhringadi Ayurvedic Hair Oil pre-wash overnight oiling. This oil is amazing after just one time I could notice diminished shedding and after the second time more than half the shedding stopped. I'm in total love with this oil. I'm really excited.

Mon.10.17.11
The Oil is working wonderfully! I'm so happy with the results. My hair is shedding at a reasonable rate. I would guestimate it is shedding 4 times less than usual and I've used it 3 times thus far. I am definitely using it from now on. I'm so happy with it I want to do the happy dance lol.

October 25th, 2011 at 09:53 PM
I started using Neelibhringadi Ayurvedic Hair Oil for 15 days now and I love it! My shedding decreased in an amazing way. I'd say I shed about 10% of what I used to shed. I use it as an overnight pre-wash scalp oiling.

This stuff is seriously a hair miracle for me. I've been struggling with too much shedding from the very beginning of my hair growing journey and I finally feel like it's ok. I seriously wanted to cry most of the time I saw how much hair I lose, especially during washing. I have tried other stuff like Castor oil, scalp massages, no poo, no SLS, etc, NOTHING has worked so well for me, nothing. This is a definite permanent add to my routine.

I just purchased a bottle of Neelibhringadi Hair Oil, but because of the cold snap here in Virginia, it is as solid as a rock. What is the safest way to re-liquefy it and get it out of the bottle?

Since it is mainly coconut oil, it should not have surprized me, but I have a question. With the weather turning colder, will using coconut based treatments be problematic?

You can scrape up some of the oil in the bottle and rub it between your palms until it melts then apply it. (this is the safest way)

Another way I sometimes do it is by warming up some water on the stove top then placing the opened bottle in that water and letting the oil slowly melt. I do this when I need more of it than I can place in my hands.

An alternative to these is to scrape up some of it from the bottle then place it in the microwave. I don't personally like this method because it makes the oil smell burnt before it's even completely liquid.

will using coconut based treatments be problematic

For me it's not more so than in the summer (for me it is solid in all seasons) and when it is problematic it's only because the coconut oil or coconut oil mixture is in solid form at room temperature which makes it a bit more difficult to handle/apply.

During winter and summer I also put a warn wool beanie over my head while I sleep with the coconut oil, or coconut oil mixture on my head to allow my body warmth to do its thing on the oil. If you're worried it will go solid on your scalp, it's unlikely because body temperature (98.6 F) is higher than the temperature at which coconut oil is in solid form (76 F).

I hope that helps and that you will update the thread with your results. :D

McFearless
October 30th, 2011, 02:36 PM
It doesnt take much to melt coconut oil so just fill a pot with hot water and put the bottle in. The only problem you may have is if your apply the oil to your length. Coconut oil freezes in my hair and makes it snap off in the Winter, but on my scalp there is no problem. :)

I just got some and the smell reminded me a bit of the old fashioned cough meds and Dandruff 'poos with creosote in them, tho I didn't see that as an ingredient on the lable. I was wondering if there was something I could do to make it a bit less...unpleasant? At this point I doubt I will use it as a leave in, maybe as a pre-wash treatment, but def not a leave-in.

Is there a difference between the Sesame based Neeli as opposed to the coconut based one? Does one work better than the other?

This might seem like a dumb question, but how much oil do you use every time for your scalp massage? I'm buying some of this stuff.

I think my shedding has increased a lot - it's driving me crazy - I think I easily loose 100-150 hairs a day. I think I'll be going bald soon! Thankfully, I'm getting a blood-test soon so I'll see if there's anything else to blame.

Thanks.

I would go with the coconut oil because coconut oil is known to help with scalp problems and it's a great oil all around. However, if you're one of those people who tend to get acnee from it (it has the effect on some people) then go with the sesame based one.

I can't really quantify how much oil I use every time, I just make sure all my scalp is covered in the stuff.

100 hairs per day is about average, the only reason to worry is if you see a decrease in pony tail circumference.

Update:
"Fri.10.28.11 12:09pm
Ok so I just finished washing my hair and I'm a little sad. My shedding is almost back to normal. It definitely increased at least 2-3 fold. Now I want to retrace my steps and see what I did differently. I waited longer to wash my hair, 5 days in stead of 3. Next time I will just wash on the 3rd day. I used CWC in stead of CO. From now on I will only CWC if I notice scalp buildup.

Thu.11.03.11 2:34am
I washed my hair on Monday and it was wonderful. I lost very very little hair while doing it. I'm thinking about taking a photo next time. I loose so little hair these days, it makes me very happy. I did wait only 3 days to wash my hair this time and used CO not CWC. I do plan on restricting myself to CWC only when necessary. I'm not a fan of too much shedding.

Fri.11.04.11 12:10am
So I waited 4 days in stead of 3 to wash my hair because of the 3 exams I had today. BAD mistake. My hair is falling out more because of it. I'm thinking 3 days is the magic maximum number of days I can go between Neelibhringadi Ayurvedic oilings."

In conclusion I can't go more than 3 days between oilings or my shedding goes back to normal.

I thought I'd add my :twocents: if it's of any help to anyone. I live in India and here the Kottakal Arya Vaidya Sala is one of the oldest and most trusted among the Ayurvedic product manufacturers. Kerala Ayurvedics is only a few years old. That said, it seems to be pretty good as well.
However, one of my thesis case studies was the Kottakal Arya Vaidya Sala, :D and all my friends from Kerala (with gorgeous locks, of course!) always recommended this brand.

Well, I got my bottle earlier this week. I applied it on Monday night and kept it on overnight to take it off on Tuesday morning. I then reapplied on Wednesday night to wash it off on Thursday morning. I brushed out my hair with the Tangle Teezer before my shower on Thursday and a whole bunch of hair came out - not what I was expecting.

I'm a bit paranoid now. I'll reapply again before my next hair wash and hope the shedding was just a fluke. Maybe if I had combed my hair rather than used the Tangle Teezer...

I'm just sick of all of this shedding. I've started taking an iron supplement, I've decreased my washes, I'm trying out CO only, even put freaking Monistat on my scalp. Biotin is out - it screws with my skin. I'm just tired of shedding so much. My hair doesn't look thin, but I have to wonder just how much of it there is... I have to run out at some point, no?

A lot of the sites I've read said that it can take 1-6 months of daily overnight use to see results. Also this might be interesting to you, it's a quote of a comment on my page:

Othala
Hi,
The first week i used the Neelibhringadi, I had a big shed. I was OK about this as I was led to expect it and in some way it proved to me that the herbs in this oil have the power to penetrate and affect the hair follicles. After that initial big shed, my hair re-grew and the daily shed reduced significantly down to about 15 a day. My hair grew really well and was thicker than it has been at any other time I can remember. I did have to use the Neeli consistently once or twice a week in overnight oilings to get those results and after a few months, as winter set in, it got to be too much of a hassle to continue. Also the smell kills me. I would still be using it now if it wasn't for the stinkiness of it.
Hope that helps! Link to original conversation (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/converse.php?u=17253&u2=32186)

Wanna know how many hairs I shed yesterday? 10!!!! That's right! I counted them and was amazed! I've only used this oil twice so this is like a miracle. Will be using it evertime I wash. By the way ladies....is anyone concerned about the "small amount of (metal? mercury?)" present in the bottle? It freaked me out a bit

I found an Organic Version (http://www.indiaabundance.com/shopping/sp191_pr2763/Nilibhringadi_Hair_Oil_(Kamadhenu_Ayurveda).html) of this oil which is free of any metals or pesticides etc. :)

Yes I am still using it. My shedding is at about 10 hairs per day. I apply it on my scalp and massagie it in, then I wash it out an hour to 8 hours later.

I am interested in this oil. I've been searching for a good oil. Coconut by itself makes me a bit greasy. I just ordered a sample of the triple moon anointing oil by nightblooming on Etsy, but this thread interests me. Is it the organic oil that you are still using? I would want to get that one because I don't want any metals or chemicals. Is this ever used as a leave in, or would I just use it before washing twice a week? I'd appreciate any info! Thanks!:p

Metals and chemicals? depends where you order it from. I ordered one that was made in the US that had this warning. The second one I ordered from India didn't.

As a leave-in? unless you don't mind smelling like something that just died I would not recommend it. The smell is very strong and not that pleasnt. I only apply it a couple of hours before I wash when I know I won't be seeing anybody.

No I am not using the organic one, I will start using the organic version once I finish the bottle I have now. I just use it before washing. I used it as a leave-in once or twice and the smell was not so bad. I only used 2-3 drops on all my scalp though.

Both of them have terrible scent. For me or my family it is not an issue but my niece for example leaved in overnight and was feeling terribly sick for 2 days. However, I may confirm that it really reduces shedding. :joy:

My niece actually is not so young- She is over 24 :). This is because there is many years diffeence between me and my elder sister. I was born when my mom was over 40 and my sister when she had been 20 :). My niece tried some oils with positive results for her hair but Sesa is very intensive and must have been to strong for hair.

Hi. I'm new and I've been reading everyone's posts. I wanted to chime in to say that I have ordered this oil everyone is talking about and I have been using another east indian oil with great results. The name is Mahabhringaraj oil. All of the ingredients are natural. I also use an herbal hairwash made by Meera. I have been chemical free for about 2 years now. My hair was in terrible shape. Prior to chemicals, my hair was hip length. Now, my hair is back to being incredibly soft. Because my hair texture is 3c/4a, I have to oil my hair daily. I use coconut oil on my length and the Mahabhringaraj oil on my scalp. I'm also doing the monistat challenge ;) I'm very excited about this Neelibhringadi oil. I did my research on the ingredients and I can't wait until it arrives :) Sorry for such a long post. :)

I really like this stuff, I have only tried it once, but I hardly shed any hair once I washed it out which is unusual for me!

You could try soapnuts (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=95), or Indian herbs (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=3). ETA: the second article is really long you can press ctrl+f and type in "wash" then use the up and down arrows to find the wash recipes. There is also a thread about it here: Using Indian Herbs and Oils to grow, Grow, GROW! (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=18424). There is also the option of shampoo bars that are all natural like Chagrin Valley (http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/products/0/48/for-the-hair).

Good luck! :)

Where did you buy the oil sonrisa76 some of the Neeli oils around have black antimony on it which is a heavy metal that can cause shedding/itching.

I have try two versions the organic one which clearly states in the bottle that doesnt contain any heavy metals and the from Alcanz which Mira_chan liked it also doesn't has any heavy metals and I much prefer the second one. It is more expensive but a little goes a very long way, it smells heavenly, relaxes me and leaves my hair just wonderful, the organic one it's great too just couldn't take the smell it was very herbal and weird.

I bought mine here:
http://alcanz.com/Alcanz/ShopCart/ProductCart.aspx?ty=B&PID=152
That one is my favorite, I love it so so much and it's a brand that I trust and I've been using it for over a year.

The other one which is good but I'm not fond of it because of the smell:
http://www.indiaabundance.com/shopping/sp191_pr2763/Nilibhringadi_Hair_Oil_(Kamadhenu_Ayurveda).html

Sometimes even if the bottle doesn't list antimony it has it, I trust the brands I listed because they stated on the bottle they don't have any heavy metals on it.

That makes sense sonrisa76. If you were not itching or feeling uncomfortable at first, I'd suggest trying to leave it on for 1 hour only before washing it out. That way it will still have time to work but not to make you uncomfortable. Some of the instructions I found said you can leave it on your scalp 30 minutes to overnight, so even 30 minutes could work. You might need to experiment a bit.

Also, like wavykisses said you might want to try a different manufacturer. India Abundance (which she linked) has the organic version of this oil, which you can try if you think the culprit might be something other than indigo.

I hope you find something that works better for you. :)

I received my oil from Indiaabundance. I ordered the organic one but I am a bit concerned because the bottle doesn't look anything like it did online. It was supposed to come in a light proof bottle and it came in a clear plastic bottle. It is called Kerala Ayurveda and states that it is all natural herbal hair treatment. It does not state that it is organic however, nor does it state that it is free of metals. There is nothing strange in the ingredients, though. I'm very concerned that it seems different from what I ordered and I am not certain if I should use it. Can someone please tell me if this brand "Kerala Ayurveda" is a good brand? Actually no, that's not it either. I didn't realize there were so many kinds. This is what they sent me : http://www.indiaabundance.com/shopping/sp33_pr4174/Neelibhringadi_Coconut_Oil_%28Kerala_Ayurveda%29.h tml
I emailed them so I should hear something soon, hopefully. My main concern now is that this one was $4 cheaper so I'm hoping they charged my account accordingly.

I will be disappointed if this one had antimony in it... I have been eyeing it for a while. lol! Please reply! I was planning on buying it when I saved up enough money.

Well, now I'm not sure. This is not the one that I was told had antimony, so I'm waiting to hear back from the company. I will let you know as soon as I find out! This is rather confusing...

It smells like really really strong molasses candy. I don't really care for the smell. Here's the thing though: I looked up the rest of the ingredients and it contains galena, which is lead sulfide. So then I looked lead sulfide up and apparently in its sulfide form it is safe to touch, so I'm going to use this bottle (it's not worth sending back for $10) but after it's gone I'm buying a different brand. I'm just not comfortable with the word "lead." I'm going to do a bit more searching. Hopefully using this one bottle won't kill me?

I don't know but I'm scared to death of lead. I'm even worried about using the rest of the bottle, but it's not a big bottle and it is, as it said, in sulfide form so not as bad. I'm still worried though. I'm searching for another one online now. It's so frustrating!!!

I noticed that wavykisses posted this link: http://www.alcanz.com/Alcanz/ShopCart/ProductCart.aspx?ty=T&PID=152, so I, being now thoroughly paranoid, have emailed the company to make sure it really is heavy metal free. Oh too bad about the sulfide :( is so frustrating, the other one from Alcanz is metal free and it smells really good I love love it.

The positive thing about this oil is that it really works, for me more than stopping any shedding is that it makes my hair so soft and so shiny I never had this type of shine in my hair before so for after all the troubles is so worth it. I can't get my hair to shine with anything like with this oil not even with cones so for me this is one if the only HG product that my hair loves to pieces.

So don't give up and I can say that the one from alcanz is worth the price I have mine for more than a year

My other favorite oil after this one is cocoveda from hennasooq, I get similar results with it only thing if left for too long can be a little drying.

Another think that came to my mind is how about making our own oil? In some bottles the ingredients are listed on percentages and those herbs can be found at any Indian market or over the web and for the milk we can always use powder milk and infuse our own oil

Well, I've been using it for about 2 weeks. The 1st day it reduced shedding a lot but since then it is still shedding, including when I put the oil in. I'm thinking my shedding could be due to something else though. School is so terribly busy right now, I've only been getting a few hours sleep a night and I have not had time to brush for very long each night. Do you think those things could be causing it instead of the oil making it worse? The oil has helped with itching for sure.

Itching is associated with indigo (as an allergic reaction), which this oil contains.

I can't say anything about the heavy metals because I don't know anything of it. The version I use is not organic and has never given me any trouble.

Oh, I see. I thought it may have had something to do with the metals. My hair and scalp are fine with indigo, which is great. :)

I do think the possibility of heavy metals in Neeli Oil are cause for concern.
Antimony is poisonous in larger amounts with symptoms similar to Arsenic poisoning and can definitely be fatal.
A quote from wikipedia: Larger doses such as prolonged skin contact may cause dermatitis, or damage the kidneys and the liver, causing violent and frequent vomiting, leading to death in a few days.
Even in very small doses i imagine just like other heavy metals the buildup would be cumulative- so it may not cause symptoms/illness straight away.

My Oil is from Gopal Ayurveda and is USDA certified organic (though purchased from Indiaabundance)

http://gopalaayurveda.com/

I found it very reassuring that they have a link to the USDA government website on their site:

http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome?navid=ORGANIC_CERTIFICATIO&parentnav=AGRICULTURE&navtype=RT

Given that the credentials of this oil check out, Im happy to keep using it.

I found another source for organic Neelibhringadi (http://www.ayur.com.au/massage-oils-en/organic-neelibringadi-oil-250ml.html) oil which claims to have:
"No heavy metals.
No added artificial flavours.
No chemical preservatives."

Honestly the heavy metals do not worry me too much. I ate fish and seafood every day for months, they all have some amount of mercury and nothing tragic happened. Also I use maybe 10 drops of oil once or twice a week on my scalp so the amount of heavy oils (if they are in it) is minuscule. Personally I'm honestly not worried at all about it. If I have some kind of side effect, then I will be worried, but for now I see no reason to do so.

ETA: Also most of it gets washed out anyway.

Lissandria
April 3rd, 2012, 07:33 PM
You do make a good point in regards to Mercury and fish.
It was also interesting to read that Antimony leaches from PET bottles into bottled water in very small amounts- I guess trace amounts of heavy metals are everywhere.

Im not getting too stressed about it, I still applied my Neeli Oil today (which is still on my hair now) but it is still reassuring to me, that the one I use is safe.

Thanks for the link, that one is in Aus so nice and close I may order next time. Love the blue bottle, too :D

I'm super interested in trying out Neelibhringadi oil because I've recently lost a lot of thickness in my length hair due to breakage around my chin and excessive shedding from scalp irritation.

I'm looking at the two main options that some of you have tried:
1. http://www.alcanz.com/Alcanz/ShopCart/ProductCart.aspx?ty=T&PID=152
2. http://www.indiaabundance.com/shopping/sp191_pr2763/Neelibhringadi_Oil_%28Ayurvedic_Hair_Loss_Oil%29.h tml

Do any of you find the indigo to darken your hair? I have naturally dark blonde hair that I dye with henna/cassia and I do not want to darken it further.

Roscata
April 29th, 2012, 02:40 PM
Indigo dye is instantly released and demises after one hour or so, that's why indigo is mixed right before being used for hair coloring (source (http://www.longhaircommunity.com/forums/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=7)).

Also if you read the thread you will see no one reported any kind of hair darkening.

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks Roscata! It seems that most who have tried the neeli oil on this thread have dark hair, so I was curious because while no one mentioned darkening, there was only one mention of the lack of it.

I wonder if Kama Ayurveda's formulation has changed.

This are the ingredients from Kama Ayurveda Neeli oil sold on the Alcanz website

Indigofera tinctora linn
Cardiospermum halicacabum linn
Eclipta alba
Phyllanthus embilica
Sesamun indicum oil
Cocos nucifera extract
Glycyrrhiza glabra
Rosemarinus officinalis oil
Lavadula angustifolia oil...
When I contacted Alcanz the ingredient list that they provided me with also contained Parfum and Milk and the order was different. I wonder which list corresponds with product content. With the Bhringraj (Eclipta Alba) being the last ingredient on this list, I wonder if its also now the least:
Cocos Nucifera
Sesamum Indicum
Indigofera Tinctoria
Cardiospermum Halicacabum
Phyllanthus Emblica
Pure Essential Oil
Parfum
Glycyrrhiza Glabra
Milk
Eclipta Alba

Last month it seemed that India Abundance was out of stock on the Gopala Ayurveda (http://www.indiaabundance.com/shopping/sp191_pr2763/Neelibhringadi_Oil_%28Ayurvedic_Hair_Loss_Oil%29.h tml) neeli, but I e-mailed them yesterday and they will have it in stock again in a couple of days.

Although it sounds like the Gopala Ayurveda brand smells worst, I may opt for it becuase it doesn't contain Parfum. It also contains two more ingredients, both of which I'm not familiar with:
Arbus precatus
Coscinium fenestratum

wavykisses, have you found one to be more effective than the other?

I used my Neeli for the first time this weekend, massaged in, combed thru, set 30 min per instructions on bottle, then used a mild natural shampoo, and a diluted vinegar rinse. after drying naturally I applied a miniscule amount of coconut oil to my brush and brushed out.

The result; super soft, super smooth hair. I put it up in a pony, then braided tightly a day later and left it that way for a day and a half. I was shocked when I took out the braid. NO KINKS, No real waves other than my own, and still very smooth and soft.

I am looking forward to more treatments now that the weather has warmed and the oil isn't solid all the time making it impossible to get out of the bottle without setting in hot water.

I'm impressed that it only took 4 business days to arrive from India, with no added taxes or duty! I added a note to my order asking that they only send me the Gopala Ayurveda organic version of the oil because it seems that others have had trouble receiving the right product. I also ordered some organic Bhringaraja powder.

I really didn't like the oil from this company...a couple of complaints...

1. The smell was very different from the one I had gotten from the other company (maybe different ingredients)
2. One of the labels peeled of and apparently this is some ayurvedic internal medicine that they are now sellling as hair oil...even though this doesn't say hair oil anywhere. Won't buy again from here. I like the one from USAIndiaStore. Even though it's more expensive I usually get it the next day and it really works. Didn't see the same results with that other one.

some people make their own. here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3fxFJykYMk) to give you an idea.,

I tried to make my own a few times, and to be honest it was just a big pain. the herbs absorb almost half of the oil, the house smelled like the herbs for hours and you have to remake it often since it won't last as long as the already bottled ones...and if even a little water gets in the oil it can start getting funky, you have to strain it a few times to remove all the powder from the oil (actually, if you find the whole herbs that might be better than powdered)...
I didn't find it worth all the time and effort :o

I'm dying to try this, but given that some Ayurvedic infused oils gave reddish tint to my light brown hair with highlights (even Vatika oil), I am afraid of using something with indigo.
Can I make my own Neeli oil (leaving out the ingredients that would stain my hair)? Any good recipes for Neeli out there? I have the ingredients list, but I don't know how to make it.
Also, I am a bit concerned about using something this powerful if you have no scalp condition... Can your scalp get dependent it and get "lazy" (producing less sebum)? I mean, should people use it regularly or only for a few weeks-months when scalp is problematic?

I would NOT leave out the indigo because it is used in a lot of Ayurvedic products for good reason, it really does help and like I said before the dye demises pretty quickly. If you want to be safe and you're making your own you can always wait for 24 hours (just in case) and then test the product either on a strand of hair or on your skin to check for coloring effects.

Also, I am a bit concerned about using something this powerful if you have no scalp condition... Can your scalp get dependent it and get "lazy" (producing less sebum)? I mean, should people use it regularly or only for a few weeks-months when scalp is problematic?

I am not really sure what you mean by powerful. The only oil that is similar to sebum is jojoba oil (http://suite101.com/article/the-secret-of-jojoba-oil-is-sebum-a150735) and Neelibhringadi Oil does not have that in any of the versions I've seen posted on this thread.

I've been wondering this, too. Can regularly using any type of oil create a deficiency in the scalp's ability to produce it's normal amount of sebum?

I honestly don't think so, but I have no evidence for this. I believe that using oil does not affect the scalp's ability to produce it's own because of SLS shampoo (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=78667). I get a lot more sebum production when using SLS shampoo (https://morroccomethod.com/educational-resources/chemical-sensitivity/176-your-shampoo-may-be-hazardous-to-your-health) ending up with perpetually greasy hair. However, when I switched to sulfate free shampoo/conditioner that overproduction has reduced, and it does come back when I go back to SLS shampoo. I have read on LHC that I am definitely not the only one who goes through this in regards to SLS.

This to me says that sebum production can be affected, but it is only affected while using a certain product. Now oil in general is not anywhere near as harsh (or "powerful") as SLS so I don't believe it can cause perpetually dry scalp. I've been using oil on my scalp for over a year and a half, and Neelibhringadi oil for about 8 months. When I stop my scalp is not dry. But that could just be me and if this is a real concern you may want to do some research or just skip oil on the scalp all together. It's your body, do what you think is best. :)

I agree with Roscata on the sebum thing. I dont think there is any way to permanently affect the production itself besides from removing the sebum glands, though you can stop the sebum from leaving the scalp by various coatings etc. for a while (it will eventually start to flake away anyhow).

I ordered from them and didn't have any problems. In fact the package arrived very fast, it took less than a week, I was pleasantly surprised. (I waited until the package arrived to respond, that's why it took me a while)

But be ware of this post: 148 (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpost.php?p=2134644&postcount=148). I haven't personally tried it yet but I will update with my results as soon as I have used it for at least a couple of weeks.

This thread has sparked my interest. I have successfully used ramtirth oil, but I'm always up for finding the next best thing :) The milk used in this product, is it coconut milk or cow's milk? I very recently found out I have a dairy allergy and I'm not sure if that means I am not supposed to put products with milk on my skin, or if it is fine to just not ingest them. While I want to try this, I would probably have to allergy test it on my arm, and then possibly be out the money :(

Roscata
June 22nd, 2012, 03:02 PM
Depending on where you get it it can have goat, cow, buffalo and/or coconut milk. If your dairy allergy is digestive I doubt anything will happen (because this oil is not to be ingested, it is to be massaged into the scalp), but if you're worried you can try testing it first. You can try testing actual cow milk on your skin, or do a yogurt hair treatment, if you want to risk it, I've done those and while it left my hair smelling iffy, it did make it feel very soft.

Yogurt is said to be able to lighten hennaed hair from what I read. Neelibhringadi does not change hair color.

I haven't tried adding EOs to it, but the organic version (http://www.indiaabundance.com/shopping/sp191_pr2763/Nilibhringadi_Hair_Oil_(Kamadhenu_Ayurveda).html) doesn't smell bad. I guess you could add some nice smelling EOs, especially the types that are used to prevent hair loss. Examples:
"basil, cajute, carrot seed, cedarwood, clary sage, cypress, eucalyptus, juniper, lavender, orange, peppermint, rosemary, clary sage, thyme, ylang ylang, lemon, yarrow, lemon balm, parsley [source (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=25)], bay, grapefruit, sage, and sweet basil [source (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=134)]."

I have no idea, why or how, I just noticed my hair doesn't grow much if I mix it with Castor oil. *shurg*

ETA: Castor oil is primarily used for thicker hair, or to prevent hair loss. Some people get faster growth too, but not everyone. I use it because it gives me a halo of baby hairs.

While I was using castor, I remember I was complaining a lot about "no growth", then after a few months I refined my statement and said "it does grow, but in the 'wrong' direction".

That is, it thickened up my hair significantly when I expected length change from it. I think it also grew longer but it certainly wasn't skyrocketing (=what I expected).

Yes I do use shampoo bars. Usually I just add shampoo a few times on the same spot in order to remove oil. I run the bar on the same spot about 4 times for each section, then spend a good amount of time massaging the scalp (~5 minutes). It works every time. But I always check to see if my hair feels oily after the first wash and if there is still oil in my hair, I apply shampoo again and repeat what I did the first time.

I'm not sure I'll be able to use neelibhringadi at full strength straight out of the bottle, but I've added it to my oil mix, and oiled my scalp per usual after this morning's debacle. I ended up taking a second shower this evening, and the oils came out with the bar just fine and my hair feels great, plus I noticed a lot less "butt floss" :p
Even if it's a pain in butt, I think this is turning out to be worth it!

I think mixing it with castor oil would slow growth because I find castor oil cleansing. It purged my face of blackheads and clogged pores so I assume it would do something similar with the scalp-draw out build up. With a growth encouraging oil you want it to penetrate your scalp so maybe the castor oil was conflicting with that.

I have been washing with soapnuts for a month and I loved them; they left the hair so shiny!
But now, I'm shedding majorly and its either the soapnuts or neeli oil. So, I'm doing an experiment.
I've made soapnut extract today and I'll wash with it tomorrow without preoiling. Today I washed with Sunsilk shampoo to clear up any oil residue left behind. There was way less shed today than yesterday when I'd used soapnuts to wash out the oil.
If I have a lot of shed tomorrow I'll know soapnuts don't suit me.
I hope it is the oil and not the nuts.
I've posted this in another thread as well but I really want to tell you guys.

I've never noticed this before when I didn't use neeli oil so I hope it is neeli oil which doesn't suit me because I love soapnuts way more.

I tried it awhile back. I liked it, it had a nice herbally smell to it. It seemed to be gentler than regular shampoo since but it didn't always remove heavy oilings (but I get carried away with oiling). BUT I read alot of people on here said there is sulfates in it not listed on the ingredients list because it does lather- where regular just herbs don't lather. I know soap nuts kinda lather though, but I can't compare if it's similar (it's been years since I used soap nuts, and still haven't tried them again). It seemed ok to me though, didn't hurt my hair- it's pretty cheap if you can find it in the stores, I didn't feel it was special or different enough to make it worth going through the trouble to just order it and pay the shipping for it though.

Mahabhringaraj Oil

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035CFY24/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00

This stuff really works for shedding hair. Seriously! NOTHING ELSE has worked for me, I was panicking because I was worried I would end up with bald spots on my wedding day next month because the shedding would just NOT stop.

Now there are some annoying aspects to this oil, the fact that it smells. Not awful, but like very strong cheap perfume (even though it does not say there is perfume in the ingredients...) AND you have to use it religiously. I have to use it every three days, the night before I wash. That means that my poor fiance has to put up with the smell a few nights a week, though he is good and doesn't complain much.

It makes my hair so nice and silky, and after the first week I had such a huge reduction in shed hair. I really have to be careful to use it consistently and never miss an oiling. Though I think after I run out of this one I might try to find a brand that doesn't stink as much.

(I did use this exact post for an amazon review, I'm not a spam bot, I swear! )

I had posted last year on this thread but I had not tried the oil for again for such a long time. Last night I was at my parents' house and found my bottle of the oil and tried it out and so far I love it. I plan to use it when I wash once or twice a week. I don't remember why I stopped using it before. It made my hair very shiny and silky, and it's so smooth it feels thinner, which I'm not used to, and it's very hard to keep pins in (might also be due to my parents' soft water) but it looks so nice. I'm hoping it still works at well with the hard water back at home. I'm also hoping I have time to rinse it out before my hot water runs out at home, but we'll see. So far I like it.

Honestly I am not sure. I went through a really bad and long shedding phase about 3 months ago and nothing seemed to stop it ( I wasn't using neeli at that time)..then I reordered the oil and used it and there wasn't much change after about 1 month of use, but I think after that it slowed down abit. I got sick of tracking the shedding and counting the hair and all that madness so I can't say for sure how much it decreased or if it is because of the oil BUT even if not for the shedding I actually found it to be one of the best oils for my hair. I feel like it's not too heavy or light and not so hard to wash out. It doesn't break me out as coconut oil does and the shedding thing is a bonus. I haven't been obsessing over my hair like before but I believe the oil to be very beneficial. It's obvious it's full of herbal goodies and the instructions say it can be used for only half an hour prior to washing so an overnight oiling is not always necessary as other oils. I also love to layer my deep conditioner with 1-2 drops of this oil and it seems to increase the moisture and benefits of the conditioner without greasiness. I haven't tried other ayurvedic oil so maybe there are better stuff out there but compared to other organic oils I found it much better (and believe me I have tried A LOT of oils).
I really recommend it because my hair thrived last year when I was using it and when I ran out I couldn't get a hold of it anywhere (it's not locally available and no online vendor was offering it) then I finally found it again couple of months ago and my hair is finally getting back on track.

I've been stalking this thread for so long and now I can finally contribute to it! Yay!

I'm too lazy to go back through every single post and see what has and hasn't been said, so I'll just give my overview.

Neeli oil is my personal God send. I used to shed in masses (200+ hairs a day) and now I lose maybe 10-30. I wish it darkened hair, I love dark hair but mine is a medium-dark brown, but I'm not complaining. I can't say much for conditioning seeing as my hair already is ultra-conditioned, but really, I doubt it'd do much, simply because it's supposed to be applied to the scalp and not the ends of hair.

My hair sheds like nobody's business when it's massaged or when moisture touches my scalp. The first time I used neeli oil my hair shed like I've never seen it shed before. I put it on at night before bed if I plan to shower the next morning, so every other day pretty much. Put on a shower cap and go to bed. I did this, and the second time I put it on my hair shed considerably less. And it kept getting smaller the more I used it. Now I slather it on and maybe two hairs shed? So it definitely works.

I live in Texas and order mine from indiaabundance.com, just type in neelibhringadi oil. I think there's only one kind, and it's organic. It's about twenty bucks with shipping and lasts a while. The bottle is bigger than what I expected. There is an older and more time tested brand everyone recommends, however there was a controversy over some sort of metal or toxin called antimony being in it. I can't think of the brand off the top of my head, but it's probably somewhere in this thread already. I will say that that oil has a lot more ingredients in it than the one I'm using now. People also say it makes your scalp feel cool and tingle, but I've never experienced that with my organic one. I think once this bottle runs out I'll try out the non organic brand I keep mentioning but can't remember.

My dandruff and scalp itching has also improved tremendously. If I care for it badly my scalp will still itch, but if you stick to a good, gentle routine you'll see great results. I'm usually that one person miracle products and remedies never work on, but this time it did work. Good luck!

HappyFoo, thanks for the update. It's been almost 2 weeks since I started using neeli oil from Kottakkal brand. I haven't noticed any less shedding since using this oil. So thought I should probably use the KPN brand and yesterday I ordered a bottle from USAHenna.com. Most of them in this thread vouch for it.

Oh my ... Another oil I now want to try! I have to make my mind up, castor, cocoveda, my own homemade ayurvedic herb infused oil, this miraculous-sounding substance... ;)

Hmmm, I've been thinking about getting this oil. Do you (those who've tried it or know about it) find that it actually helps hair grow faster? Or is it mainly for stopping hair shedding so much? Or both?

I haven't had anything like hair growing faster, just drastically decreased shed. I mean less shed than I've ever experienced in my entire life. BUT, I will say when you stop using it, your hair will start shedding again after several days. I gave myself a break and a few days later went back to shedding masses, lol. Back to the neeli oil for me...

I personally would recommend it if you're having hair shed problems like me, but if your main concern is accelerated growth, neeli probably won't be your best bet. Although I will say neeli did give me tons of baby hairs I'm ecstatic about. :cheer:

I just received this in the mail today all the way from india! DH gifted me an amazon card for Mother's Day, and I've been eyeing this stuff for months. I got the little organic one with the purplish label spelled 'nilibhringadi'. Yea the smell isn't the best. It was packaged up so cute! Tied canvas on the outside of the package... Plus the estimated arrival date was 6/6-6/26 and it just arrived today! I know my goal is growth but I also would love more thickness (who wouldn't?) and figure a nice neeli massage a few nights a week can't hurt anything! I plan to use before bed (it's supposed to help with a sound sleep!) and CWC out in the am. I'll report back any interesting results! :)

Good Luck, tbonita. I love using neeli oil, use it regularly before every wash which is minimum 3 times a week. Applying it before bed is perfect. I did a few times leaving it overnight. But nowadays I apply it 2 to 3 hours before washing my hair. Somehow I like the herbal smell of that oil.

Be careful when choosing oils. I've tried two different brands of Neeli oil, one was amazing and smelled wonderful. It was a dark brown-black color. The other stunk and wasn't a good oil, it had a greenish color. There had been bad reviews about that second oil afterwards as well. The brand is not so great.

Ok so I transferred the oil into a 1-oz argan oil bottle with a dropper, which makes it very easy to apply to the scalp. I use 2 droppers to cover my scalp. I then use vatika oil on the "lengths" (all 2 inches of them). Then I do an inverted scalp massage for a good few minutes. I sleep in it. I quite enjoy the smell. Maybe cause it's mixed with the yummy vatika oil? I don't know but I certainly do not mind it, call me crazy. It COs out easily in the am, and I don't need a heavier 2nd conditioner even though there's damage underneath all this henna.

I got the organic one Gopala brand in the brown glass bottle, with the purple label spelled nilibhringadi. It was $13 on amazon. This one doesn't have that toxic heavy metal in it as it lists the ingredients and has all the organic labeling - it states NO HEAVY METALS. I can list all ingredients if anyone is interested.

Update: since I've started with this oil, there are little baby hairs sprouting at the temple region of my hairline. I have pictorial evidence but they're so tiny you kind of need a microscope, but *I* can see em clearly!! If and when they proliferate I will post a good pic w flash :) Team Neeli Oil

ETA: created album with progress pics 2 weeks in... Will update if anything changes in next couple of weeks! Maybe it is visible in photos...

tbonita, glad to know that Neeli oil is working for you. I use it regularly, bought several bottles, don't ever want to be out of it  I too have several short hairs which are around 4 to 5 inches long now. Can't wait for all those hairs to reach my pony.

Happy to read you are having a good experience with the oil ....

I have a question, we are supposed to shed some hair, correct? That is the cycle ... What are some adverse consequences, if any, of not shedding that hair?

You mean keeping the hair in by artificial means after the follicle is done growing and holding it? if it's artificially, follicles could get inflamed. If it's not shedding out after it is done growing, it won't grow any longer and just sit there, that's normal for a certain amount of time. Then it sheds out and a new hair grows in it's place. You won't get the new hair till the old one sheds usually.

Thanks for your reply. I asked because this oil helps with shedding, correct? So, I was thinking... what if I am meant to shed this much? Wouldn't be adverse not to do so?

I'm talking about 'normal' shedding...

Hair does shed no matter what you do, that is normal. This oil helps hair to stay a bit longer on our scalp, and helps with all three phases of hair growth. The anagen, catagen and the resting phase which is the telogen phase. That's all I can think of. I am no expert on hair, what little I know is reading about it online.

I see that mira-chan has tried to explain, and she has done a good job explaining it well.

Anything that makes hair grow like a weed is worth trying!!! I have Mahabringraj oil that I use, its also a blend of oils, I can list the ingredients when I get home from work. I think it helps stimulate my scalp. I like it, it smells strong....is this similar? Tbonita, do you think its the henndigo that makes your hair grow? I can't use henna because I am trying to recover from a chop after trying to remove henna. I use cassia though.

So, I couldn't use the oil last Friday cause of schedule issues. But I did use it on Saturday. Here are my first thoughts:

a) It arrived a bit solidified. I'm assuming because of the coconut oil in it. Right now is melting a bit more, but my first impression was "Wow. This thing is spoiled"

b) The smell is not as strong as I expected it to be. Maybe my nose is not than sensitive. Nothing different from using amla or shikakai. Since I've used those before, it didn't bother me that much. After I washed, I didn't notice any residual scent.

c) It is very easy to apply. It is very runny (nothing like castor oil). I applied it with my fingers, but I will try to apply it with a syringe to get better coverage.

d) I used it for over 4 hours (I was at home doing daily chores so I was not in a hurry to wash it)

e) Simple CO got it out with no problem. I use a very diluted VO5 kiwi lime conditioner.

f) * This one take it with a grain of salt * I saw more shine in my whole hair. Perhaps was the placebo effect... Who knows?

g) To ease the application for the future. I puncture the plastic cap that comes inside (it is kind of a non refillable cap - for those familiar with whisky/alcohol lol). That way I don't have to touch the oil that goes back in the bottle and perhaps, extend the life of the whole thing.

So, I think the above covers the initial experience. I have not seen changes in my shedding (too early for that of course) and if I do, I will make sure to share them with you.

Yikes, I'd say that's not a good sign. :( Maybe you have a sensitivity to something in the oil? Which kind of neeli oil did you get? There is some variation in quality and ingredients by different brands of neeli oils...

It must have been the not washing (I'd probably die of itch if I didn't wash my hair for almost a week...)
I have used that same neelibhringadi oil without any problems, though of course I only do pre-wash oilings, and don't usually leave it on for more than an hour, or sometimes (very rarely) overnight.

True Rosetta... I remember Spidermom mentioned in one post recently about how we go crazy trying to stretch washes and avoid cones, etc. (not implying is wrong; just saying that is not for everyone)... and how this caused her SD...

Anyway, just to be sure I clarified this morning and did LOC as usual... let's see how my scalp feels... I will go back to my every other day washing or every two days; and see how that works... This 'winter' I've been feeling how my hair gets oily faster than during regular 'summer' season

^ I absolutely agree with Rosetta! :agree: Scalp oils are normally applied as pre-poos, so maybe from an hour to overnight before a wash. Leaving scalp heavily oiled for a week is bound to attract dirt and irritate scalp, so itchies and flakes are to be expected. Maybe try it as a pre-poo next time and see how your scalp reacts? :)

Hi everybody :waving:,

I continue to use the oil sporadically (life gets in the way and it's hard to follow a set schedule) and I think even when is too early to say this oil has helped to stop the shedding, I think I might have thicker hair... who knows? One thing is for sure... it feels really nice ... could be the added moisture I am getting from the rinse-out oil method? but it does feel nicer... I will continue to oil and see what happens... I think Roscatta mentioned up in the thread that you need to consistently oil for at least 6 months in order to see results....

So, how are you guys doing with it? Any news? updates?
