Shampoo & conditioner safety?

Maybe some of you can help me determine whether or not the common ingredients found in common shampoos and conditioners are safe or not. I go to one site and they say "danger, danger!!" and another says the FDA has determined that "x" or "y" or "z" ingredient is safe for use in cosmetics, hair products, etc. So which is it???? :confused: Are they ok or not?

Haircare products don't go through FDA approval... but if a product really started making people sick, I'm rather certain that it would be all over the news and pulled from shelves rather quickly. Personally I find the doom and gloom people to be a bit overdramatic. I'm certain that some people are extra sensitive to some ingredients, but most of the population is fine using them.
