View Full Version : Addicted to Oiling

I tend to get addicted to new things fairly easily and my hair is my latest obsession. I've discovered oiling and have oiled my hair at least 3 times in the last week and a half.
Should I do it only once a week or is it ok to oil so often.
I started with olive oil but ordered coconut oil today and have it in my hair as we speak.
I've even oiled my 10 year old daughters hair and she commented on how soft it was the next day - yey!

It is ok to oil so often if your hair likes it :)

Do it as often as you like, it's best to do it before every wash :)
Oiling is one of the things that you can't overdo ;)

Yup, as Brownie points out, you can oil as much as you want, or more accurately....as often as your hair likes. At times i've kept my hair soaking in heavy oilings for months at a time and it only helped :)
Oh, a word of warning.....the oiling obsession just gets worse! Trust me, i know lol ;)

Hey julliams: I am a new member like you, and my hair seems to enjoy the new thing oiling it as well. I imagine frequent heavy oiling can make me wash my hair more vigorously and more often to remove the excess oil.
My own hair and scalp is naturally dryish, but I also wonder what is the reasonable frequency of heavy and smaller oil applications
.

Me too! I am addicted to oiling and i found that i ended up washing my hair more than needed so i started oiling very little after every wash when my hair is wet. This doesn't make my hair really oily but still i get the benefits of my oil....

My hair responds very well to oiling at home where the water is soft, but I'm visiting in a different state where the water is hard right now, and oil made my hair crunchy. Odd.

Thanks chotee, that sparsely oil after washing looks like a good more permanent solution for me. Just I seem to need some extra oil before swimming, which I do fairly frequently.

I was an oiling addict (and still kind of am..) but I don't put as much as I'd like to anymore. I keep the oil (a little olive oil or jojoba) for as long as I can only when I don't have important engagements. Like Chotee, I rub a few drops after I wash.
I really wanted to continue heavy oilings (overnight) but I recently stopped because I had to shampoo out about 3/4 times, and I realized I'm actually making my hair even drier by overshampooing! If I don't shampoo that much, the oil stays in my hair and it feels icky....:(
Anyone else have this problem?

I lightly oil my ends every night before bed. I use jojoba oil and my hair loves it!

Odd, indeed. I live in a very hard water region and my hair loves oil. Just shows to go you how different every one's hair really is.
I love to oil, too. It seals in moisture and makes my hair lovely and soft. I oil both pre and post wash. :)

Another one absolutely hooked on coconut oil here. I love both the way it makes my hair feel and the way it smells. Lovely stuff! :)

Oil your hair as long as it feels good and looks good!
I usually apply liberal amount of oil to my hair at night before I wash it in the morning two to three times a week. Hollywood Beauty Olive Oil Blend & Apricot Oil are my Favs. I sometimes use Africa's Best - Ultimate Herbal Oil w/ginseng(red Cap) and coconut oil.
I also dab a little Hollywood Beauty Olive Oil Blend on my ends & hair for a shinny finish after a partial blow dry & style (I have oily skin & hair if I do not blow dry my scalp area it will lie flat & look very bad half way through the day in hot Fl). That blend works real well for me, it soaks in nicely and doesn't leave my hair greasy or too stringy, its very lite and has a pleasant smell. I buy it at WalMart in the ethnic section. I saw it at albertsons & Publix but it was a lot more expensive then at WalMart.

I haven't gone overboard with it, but my hair (and skin!) is loving sweet almond oil. I apply about 1-2 drops to my hair from the ends down after a shower. Also, I sometimes apply a drop to a dry braid tassel a little while before bed. Hmm... I think I might do that tonight, actually.
Oiling has done wonders for the softness/silkiness of my ends :D

Conditioner is great for removing oil, oddly enough shampoo doesn't seem to do all that much to take it out

I'm also really into oiling (using coconut). I also use a little jojoba sometimes. This problem has gotten worse recently because I got some new conditioners and a shampoo and I want to try them out... so I help the process of getting greasy hair along a bit more than normal :) Regularly, I do daily light oilings and a bit heavier one when I think I'll be washing my hair the next day or so.

My hair loves oiling and so do I. I also don't think you can overoil. Well, you can, but that leads to greasy hair fast and not to damage of any kind I believe. So oil away.:D
I basically oil my hair everyday, before I put it up and sometimes even before I go to bed. These are just light oilings. The day before I wash, I do a heavy oiling and put it up so no one notices it's greasy.;)

I'm desperately waiting for my oil in the mail. It's taken over a month. Me and my hair misses it terribly. I love to put a small amount in when my hair is wet after washing. Drys soft and shiny.

I'm glad someone asked this question because even though my hair is chin length, I've been oiling the ends nightly (sometimes olive, sometimes jojoba) and was wondering the same thing. Sometimes I oil lightly after washing in the morning too.
The effect I really like about oiling is that it adds weight to wurliness and makes it feel longer. The last 2" of a wurl I have in the back of my head will literally stick straight out. Argh! I know that eventual length will weigh it down, but for now oil seems to do that trick.
Interesting that conditioner removes the oil more than shampoo? I learn something everyday here and feel like it will take another year to get all those lifelong hair myths busted!

Well I used the coconut oil last night and not as happy with the results as with the olive oil. It seems a little dry. Might be the fact that I washed with shampoo twice in order to remove the oil. Hmmm. Will try again next week.

I've read somewhere on this forum that oil removes oil (don't ask me why:o) and I think that conditioner does a better job at washing the oil out because it has more similarity to oil than shampoo. After all, shampoo is meant to cleanse your hair and conditioner to make it softer/more manageable/shinier.
Don't take my word for it though.

Used the coconut oil again last night and had much better results today. I read somewhere that someone had more success with the oil on wet hair than on dry hair so I tried that after my wash and it seems to have been good.

ok, I just looked for a sticky and did a search but didn't find an answer so let me ask a newbie question: how much oil does one usually use? I once tried an "oil treatment" by drenching my head in olive oil , wrapping it and sleeping in it overnight- when I washed it out the next day it felt soft and shiny...for about 15 minutes, after which it flattened out and felt oily and grungy for what seemed like weeks, no matter how much I washed it. (I have rather fine, medium thick hair). It totally put me off ever trying it again, but now that my hair is turning grey it's a bit coarser and dryer and longer I'd like to try it again. Apply it to the entire head of hair? Just to the ends? A few drops? The entire bottle? ;)

I oil almost daily at least through the drier fall and winter here in the midwest. There's no harm if your hair likes it! I find dampening my hair first helps the oil work better!

Start with a teeny tiny amount and see what works for you. With coconut oil I use about a fingernail's amount or less. With jojoba I used like 1 drop and sometimes that was too much!

*holds hand up*
Me too I lightly oil the last 4" or so every morning before putting it up and I do a deep oil once, sometimes twice a week. My hair loves oil and I am totally adicted to doing this, so much so my bathroom cupboard looks like an oil shop with all the different types.
Emu being my favorite at the moment!

I found that 3-5 drops of Nightblooming's oil mix (NAYY) on unwashed but wet hair worked well for me.
I wash Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, but in order to have presentable hair, I need to wet it down Monday. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday. So--after towel drying, I put a few drops in one palm, rub hands together, then smooth hands over hair from the ears down a time or two, then run hands over the canopy.

I lightly oil nightly from the ears down the length with either jojoba, triple moon or coconut. I then plait into 2 english braids and sleep :D
my hair loves this - I also do DH's hair the same, but he just gets one plait and I think his hair likes coconut the best (especially if he's been surfing)

Oh wow, maybe that is why oiling didn't work for me? The shampoo stripped my hair but still left it feeling unclean and dry. Conditioning to get it out is a great idea! Thank you!

Thank you! I was wondering if there is a such thing as over oiling and I wasn't sure how much was too much. Of course I don't walk around with oily hair but I wondered if oiling was for a few times a week or something like that. My hair loves coconut oil and feels so soft when I use it. I have been using it every day for about a month now. Anyway, you answered my question. Thanks.

I love oil. I use a small amount after a wash on damp hair, and I do heavier oilings on dry hair. After 5 months using oil on a big "cut", I continue to have no splits. Yeah.

I love oil for my hair. I do light oilings of just a few drops. Sometimes daily. My hair just soaks it up. I love the Aveda oil mixes for their scent. I've recently stepped up the frequence of my night time oilings. I'm doing them almost every time the night before I wash. I've also increased the amount of oil I put on my hair for heavy oilings.

Count me in. After every wash I lightly oil the ends and canopy. I also try to remember to do a heavy overnight oiling at least once a week. I actually really like how my hair feels during the heavy oiling. I've been tempted to just leave it in there for a few days but haven't gotten brave enough to do so. I don't do alot of updos yet and oily hair worn down doesn't look so attractive. LOL :)
My favs are coconut oil and olive oil. I'd like to try jojoba but can't seem to justify the price right now (especially since I have half of a huge jar of coconut yet to get through). But regardless, my hair seems pretty happy with its current selections. Yes, I love oiling!
