I have two default styles: down, and in a pony tail.

I can do a very short French braid, braided pigtails, half-up pony tail and... down. That's it. What else is a shorty at my length to do? I want to experiment with some styles, because it's finally long enough to really get in the way at times.

:) Pictures would be much appreciated, as I'm pretty visual.

TIA!

You could twist it up and use a flexi 8 clip. http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=33931 Might need a small one though.

Oooooh. I like that, actually. Is this a specific brand, or is it just the name of a toy?

ETA: Okay, I went to the website, and I see I have a new thing to spend huge amounts of money on.

On my shoulder lenght hair I can make a pretty good fake bun -
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=1972&pictureid=47664

I put a snag free elastic around my wrist, then brush my hair back and hold it at the base with one hand as though I was making a ponytail.

Still holding the base nice and tight I use my other hand to twist the lenght of my hair a few times until I can feel that the base is nice and secure and tight to my head.

I put a finger at the base of the twisted hair and use my other hand to wrap the twisted lenght around my finger, making the fake bun shape.

Then I tuck the ends of the hair under the 'bun' and secure it by slipping the elastic off my wrist and wrapping it around the middle of the fake bun, not at the base (otherwise it'll all unravel).

The key to success seems to be making the twist as tight as I can and using an elastic that isn't too big or too small.

There are a few videos for styles on the ficcare website that could work, like the french twist, peacock or casual bun- http://www.ficcare.com/videos.aspx

I just use a Babyliss "Fake-arre" to do some of these.

I do a lot of updos I'd like to post on LHC, but I suck at taking pics of the back of my head!

Shoulder length hair is good to learn and improve braiding techniques. I have APL hair, which I often wear in a single french braid, single english braid, or in two french braids.
When I'm lazy, I just have them in a french twist or peacock and secure it with a medium size Ficcare Maximas.
You could also try a sock bun or two.

I tried out sock buns at that stage, but mainly it was in a lace braid. http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=113

You might try this:

With shrinkage my effective length is SL.

I twist my hair into something like a french twist and use a 60th street hair fork. Or I put it into a low pony tail, wrap my hair around it bun-style and then wrap it again with a pretty scrunchie. Or if I'm going for a little more polished look I top it with an octopus clip instead of a scrunchie. Keeps it up and out of the way, and I can oil it without it looking greasy, since it is tucked away.

I love this video. I'm definitely going to try this, though I think I may need a new pins to keep the last few pieces in.

Thank you, everybody. :) I'm going to experiment for the next little while and hopefully post some pics.

My hair is shoulder length and right now I really love the gibson tuck, french twist, and french braid (which you already mentioned) also if I'm in a hurry I just put my hair into a twist of sorts and put a hair shield over it

Might I suggest a "banded-ponytail"?
You can see a pic in my "Functional / Outdoors" hairstyles. It looks pretty cool, and you can add as many sections as you want, depending on how secure you want it to be. Or if you want it loose, just using 3 or 4 hair-ties.

You should be able to do 2 buns. I love this style. I've also been doing this (http://ysolda.com/wordpress/2007/01/10/snow-white-hair/) a lot lately, and my hair is layered and not yet to my shoulders.

My hair isn't as thin an ysolda's, so I use u-shaped hair pins on the sides and a couple claw clips at the back to hold the ends. Your hair may or may not be too long for that one.
