Looking good! It could be 1b or 1c, it’s harder to tell with layers (the natural layers you get from growing out a shaved/pixie cut). It’ll be fun seeing how it evolves!

You can always set photos in Imgur to private :)

Reading renee your hair looks really long, I bet it's even longer when wet. Looking very nice :)

Well I cancelled my hair appt for this week - was going to get a trim - first trim on 7 months!! But I've put it off another month. I'm really happy with the condition of my hair it feels healthier than it has in months, no idea how that happened but I'll take it :)

Thanks! yes, when my hair is wet or straight it definitely is longer. I have also gone about 7 months without a trim. I am waiting until January to reassess and see if I need one. It seems like when my hair is shorter, it just needs less trims. That is awesome about the condition of your hair. :)

Hey I was wondering, what are people prioritising in their hair care at this length?

I just try to make sure my hair is moisturized enough. I CO twice a week, and wash with a non sulphate shampoo once a week. I try to use leave in conditioner, and I don't brush. I am not wearing my hair up all the time because it's really just too short, but when I do put it up, its usually a peacock twist.

How about everyone else?

With my plan to trim back to SL i think i will stay here till the end of 2019, but i feel it is the right thing to do. My ends look terrible, even though it isn't very obvious in photos.

Your ends don't look terrible at all, stray! It might feel refreshing to trim off the bleach damage, though. Seems like you couldn't go wrong, either way. :)

Lady Stardust that is so exciting! I remember that happening for me when I first grew my hair out.

I finally got a length picture, but it isn't really the best lighting. This cold and dry weather is really straightening my hair. I don't mind though because it's fun to have a different looking texture. I am definitely absolutely at shoulder length now, so that is awesome.

Keeping my hair up most of the time, washing as little as possible, finger combing instead of brushing.

I'm prioritizing scalp health and diet at the moment. I don't think I'm doing anything different to my hair compared to when my hair is shorter/longer. Keeping it moisturized and tangle free and avoiding heat styling as much as I can. That's about it :)

Congratulations kph12, I know this hasn’t been your favourite length and you must be glad to be moving onwards and downwards :)

My routine is quite simple, I need to wash fairly frequently so I use a sulphate free shampoo (but only really because I don’t get on with silicones and the two go hand in hand). I deep condition weekly and I’m making a huge effort to wear my hair up to protect the ends. I mainly do a peacock twist because that’s the most likely to stay put without pulling. Sometimes a disc bun if it doesn’t slip out. I’m finding that blunt ends are not helpful with buns, but my hair isn’t very thick so blunt is better for me. I fingercomb and only brush for special occasions when I want to wear my hair down.

Sometimes I think that I should wear my hair down now while it’s shorter, but I think I would regret that in a short while. My hair is pretty fragile so I hope that being extra cautious will pay dividends in the future. Also, my toddler likes to throw her arms around my neck for a cuddle, so it’s best out of the way :)

I should probably wear my hair up more but I haven't been doing that because I know when its longer I will have to wear it up a lot. I have my hair blunt cut as well because my hair is so fine. I have to remember not to give in and get layers this time because I can't stand my hemline as it grows when I have layers. It looks very thin and scraggly.

I don't do anything special with my hair apart from a leave in hair oil concoction I bought. I use olaplex once in a blue moon. I try to only straighten about once a month if I have a special event. I wear it in a bun 99% of the time though. I'm very low maintenance.

I will be really glad to be back to APL again. I feel like that is a really good length for me. Long enough to wear up easily, but short enough to wear down whenever I want. Thank you Stray_mind. :) I like to be able to switch back and forth, sometimes more curly looking, sometimes wavy, sometimes barely wavy at all. I know what you mean about wave shrinkage though. So glad you decided to hold off on the drastic trim! You have made so much progress, with it being only 4 months away to reach a major goal, I think waiting sounds like a good decision.

I know what you mean about wanting the texture to change on your whim, hahaha. My hair has a character of it's own. After washing and air drying it is either 2a wavy or 2b wurly, depending on the mood. On day two it can get just slightly wavy, almost 1c/2a and later on it can even be completely 1 c straight...
I prefer my texture post washing and air drying, but i don't know how to keep it that way, as my waves straighten out a good bit after i keep it in a bun for some time. I get big and kinda loose bun waves.

Same here. When my hair is longer and I wear it up in a bun all the time, my waves get pretty loose. The only way I can keep my spirals and wurls past the first day of washing is to use gel and I really don't like stuff in my hair.

I have a pic of my bun waves from last year before I cut my hair. Almost exactly a year ago. I would be happy if my hair looked like this all the time. It's funny how we don't appreciate what we have sometimes until we lose it.

I actually have layers and dye damage in my bun waves picture too. It's one of the reasons I cut it. Now looking back I see it didn't look as bad as I thought it did. I think your hair looks good. I would never guess you had dye damage from the pictures.

I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by hair stuff at the moment. I know the answer is to put it up and forget about it, and I’m halfway there...I’m putting it up at least.

I left it down for 2 days over Christmas and it made me realise that I love how it feels when it’s down, but that has made me impatient. My hair felt long to me but then I saw I photo and it looked short. On the flip side, it has made me wonder whether I will like the feeling of having longer hair because it gets in the way (mainly it gets caught between me and my daughter when she cuddling). I think I’ve had APL length hair in the past, judging by photos, but I wasn’t paying attention to the length back then. I would like to be paying less attention to it now!

I’m impatient because I’m tall(ish) and need to trim often so it feels like a very long way between milestones....about a year, and more with trims. My hair goes see through if I don’t trim.

I think the moral of this tale is that I should keep wearing my hair up every day because wearing it down makes me think too much!

I am extremely lazy most days, so i am just putting it in a peacock twist with a ponytail or a wonky cinnabun with a flexi. When i have more time and energy, i do something more "fancy" like a braided half up or a bun with some accent french or dutch braids.

blackgothicdoll, for shorter hair the only bun-styles I know are gibson tuck and tucked braid(either dutch og french - preferable fastened with a flexi-8 ). I'm quite fond of hair claws at the moment - they can be quite beautiful, and are protective and easy to wear. And they make hair seem like it's more than it really is, which is always a plus :)

Hi ladies and gents! It's finally time for me to join you.

Like my siggy says I started growing my hair again in October 2017 when I had my last pixie cut. My hair was basically boy short: buzzed sides and back with around inch on top, heavily lightened with thinning shears. I hoped to grow out with very little trimming but had to do some mullet cuts to prevent my thick hair from looking ridiculous. I'm keeping my bangs and I still have shorter layers to grow out but overall I'm close enough to shoulder length. So I decided to start the new year in a new thread.

I'll take a picture of where I am now tomorrow, January 1st.
Happy growing everyone! :hifive:

I trimmed my hair about 1/4 inch to maybe 1/2 inch today. I did Feyes method and I would say that my current hair length is the absolute shortest that you could ever use that method to trim with. I'm in the no trimming challenge so I wanted to freshen up the ends. We will see how it goes.

The joys of growing out a pixie - I have this odd chunk of hair on the right side of my head that's almost an inch shorter than everything else and sticks together like weird floppy dog ear. No matter what I do, if my hair is loose that bit clumps. So occasionally I braid just that chunk :D

I get this too, but with several layers acting up instead of one. On bad days, my hair looks like a weird asymmetrical sculpture that in no way should sit the way it does. I mean, it just looks like it doesn't belong to my face and was photoshopped on top of my head. Smart idea to mini-braid it :)

I get this too, but with several layers acting up instead of one. On bad days, my hair looks like a weird asymmetrical sculpture that in no way should sit the way it does. I mean, it just looks like it doesn't belong to my face and was photoshopped on top of my head.

I know how you feel :) I have the wildest hair straight after washing, random parts sticking out everywhere; it calms down a lot after I sleep on it but that one bit has a mind of its own. Also, I always thought I had straight unruly hair but coming here I finally realized it's definitely not straight. Can't wait to see what it looks like longer.

:hifive:

edit: Decided to take a photo tonight. Here's my wonky mess of a hair :)

It’s much harder to be patient when you’re close to the milestone isn’t it! Can the trim wait, or can you do a tiny one that will feel much better but won’t be too noticeable?

Welcome to all the recent joiners to the thread. Everyone’s hair is looking lovely.

It feels, and looks, like APL is an incredibly long way away for me. My hair is about 19 inches and as far as I can tell, APL is about 22.5 - 23 inches on me. I need regular trims so 4 inches will take up to a year from now.

What length is APL on everyone else? I wouldn’t think it would vary too much, but there will obviously be bigger variations the further down the body we get! BSL is 28 inches and waist 33 inches for me.

Well, I have reached APL already three times while in this thread... But my ends are so bad. I don't need to trim now, but I have to sooner or later. As far I have not been able to get past APL, and it might be the same thing even this time...

Apl is 21" on me, bsl 25.5", waist is I think... 30" (am short lol... Hip is 33-34")

And in exciting to me news, I've definitely made it. Haven't measured yet but snapped this photo today. :) I was probably at APL mid November like I thought I should have been, just didn't get good photos to show the length or something. Oh well, I've made it now. I don't need a trim anytime soon so it looks like I'll be moving on from this thread. Thanks for the support, guys :D

I know what you mean Lady Stardust. My measurements are about the same as yours. APL dry is around 24 inches, however wet its about 22. BSL dry is 28, wet is 26, and I think waist is about 32 wet and 34 dry.

YAY! Congratulations Wispe! Your hair looks great! and long! :)

I trimmed I think about half an inch a few days ago. My hemline looks a bit more straight across now, I will measure today after my shower. I took a length pic yesterday but its not very good quality. I will try for another one later and see if there is an improvement. I have been wearing my hair up in a peacock twist all week and I like it. It's always a pleasant surprise when I take my hair down at night to see that it's longer than I thought it was. :)

ReadingRenee we do have very similar distances between milestones! I don’t have much shrinkage, but then I don’t have lovely curls like you. I think I only have an inch shrinkage at the most.

I love that contrast between wearing my hair up and letting it down too. The length creeps up on you, and it’s so lovely to be able to wear it up after all this time. I usually do a peacock twist but sometimes do a bun if my hair doesn’t feel too slippery.

Yeah the waves and curls definitely eat up the length. Although my hair is collarbone length dry now, I still haven't been able to get a bun to hold in any decent way. What kind of bun do you do?

I measured my hair and it is 20 inches after my trim. It was almost 20.5 before the trim so that is not too bad.

That was an accurate half inch trim! I’m amazed that it’s possible to do it yourself at this length.

I do a disc bun, but success varies. Some days it slips out, sometimes the ends splay out, sometimes it’s nice and neat! It can feel a bit tight sometimes so I usually default to a peacock twist.

There was a thread about a shoulder length version of a lazy wrap bun and I can do that too, but it also feels tight at times.

I haven't the exact measurement, but the distance between my shoulders and APL is ridiculous. At least as compared to BSL, MBL and WL, which are much shorter and evenly spaced.

I once ordered a corset online and found out that, though I'm slightly above average in height, my torso is too short to even wear regular corsets(!). The rest of my body is normal(or daddy longlegs, depending on how you look at it). That's why I'm not even going to measure myself - I already know I'm a freak:laugh:

I used the feyes method of trimming straight across, by putting my hair in a ponytail at the nape of my neck with a scrunchie, and then while looking straight down at the floor sliding it down and then bringing the tip over my shoulder. I could barely see what I needed to trim. That is the shortest I would ever want to have my hair to do the feyes trim method. I also have wavy hair so it forgives a multitude of unevenness sins... :eyebrows:

Oh, the disc bun! I need to look at that again. I could NOT get it when I had long hair, it was too confusing or something. :?

Thanks for explaining how you trimmed, I’ve saved that for future reference! My hair is incredibly unforgiving and I have nape whorls which like to mess things up at this length, so I’ll stick with my hairdresser until my hair is longer. At least I’ve got a good one to go to :)

I think this is a good stage for trying out buns without having too much hair in the way :)

-Seconding the recommendation for disc bun, that one may work sooner than most other buns do at this length. For me it was the seashell bun right at shoulder, and the disc bun right afterwards.

-I microtrimmed out some bleach damage using feye’s method for a u-shaped hem several months ago. It worked out pretty well for me since most of my bleached ends are still on the sides/front and the u-shaped hem got the parts of hair I was most interested in trimming. My natural hair didn’t really need messed with, those ends feel fantastic. Plus, I prefer the u-shape hem on me.

I have this same problem. The distance between shoulder and APL for me is more than any of my other milestones all the way until tailbone. I have broad shoulders and mega long legs. My torso is 7 inches and I am 5'6.

The good news about that is, theoretically once I make APL, I have maybe 2 years to get to hip length. *shrug* One can only hope.

If you happen to see this, do you have any particular tutorials you used for the seashell bun and the disc bun? Shoulder to APL is the single longest road on my journey since I'm not planning on growing below waist. I'm almost 6' tall and naturally have broad shoulders also. The last time I started to grow my hair I was already close to BSL, so I didn't have to go through this phase. Sigh

I'm so glad I can post in this thread again. My hair is at my collar bone. While I'm thrilled it's growing, my styling options are still pretty limited. I do a half-up lazy bun a lot, as well as peacock twists and pony tails. I'm working on making a presentable braid, but right now my attempts are laughable.

Do you guys have any other styling suggestions for this inbetween length?

Welcome to All of the newcomers of this thread as well.

Just like for everyone else here, SL to APL is the biggest distance and probably biggest milestone ever. Not just because the distance is ridiculously large, but also because beyond this point my hair starts looking Actually Long. :)

I am only a few months away from it though and the wait is getting really painful hahaha.

Aerya
January 8th, 2019, 03:02 AM
I agree, Stray! This is a long milestone but a good one - APL feels so different from shoulder. And beyond that point the hair starts to feel and look long, at least by most non-LHC standards. Also, once you've done this milestone the next feel shorter! At least on me, it's not so far to BSL, and from there not so far to waist.

Speaking of which, I am sooo close... I think the longest bit is there when straight, but I want a solid APL before I call the milestone, so I will wait until the end of the month at least, maybe a bit longer. I'm a bit annoyed with my layers as from the front my hair is like an inch away from APL but I'm not going to start evening my hemline up yet. I want all my length for now, lol. Besides I like a bit of layering and non-blunt hemline on longer hair.

raemarthe - lovely shiny whirlyness

I think I am safe to claim APL ish – still sort of teetering around the edges, the fronts defo there, the rest depends on how straight / wavey my hair is / what angle my head is at.
Stray – Mind- hang in there – it’ll reach it before you know it! Totally agree this is it – now I feel hair can be considered long! Maybe the short end of long as far as the knee growers are concerned – but it does pony tails n plaits etc. and it’s only gonna keep growing longer

However Not had a hair cut /trim in 18 months starting to feel the need for one. It’s grown out of any style & with the length its starts to look a little flat.
My whirls are more waves with a whirl at the end.

Yes it’s a risk but if I get my usual guy I can normally trust him to listen & do a good job and not shave everything off. love the pampering niceness of the hair dressers and usually get a style that grows out nicely for at least the first 6 months & hopefully it’ll help make my hair look a little thicker again & be in better condition.

probably book something now for like May – that will stave off the twitchy need to cut in the meantime and give me something to look forward to. might have an extra inch or two hair by then & plenty of time to cancel or put it forward.

Not used to hair being even this ‘long’ so it’s a bout to get tricky on the looking after stakes.

aerya - sames! just wobblin on the edges of APL. The only time you really know for sure that youve hit a milestone is when your desperately pondering whether or not you've hit the next one.
If you're thinking am I at APL it's kinda sorta there if definitely looks there from this angle? Then at least you know youve definietly surpassed collar bone!
When it's tickling your BSL its definitely past safe to call APL!

I think my hair is around 2 inches away from APL when stretched. But i wanna get there unstretched.

Due to my layers, my hair in the front is already past APL and moving towards BSL. But when i trim in summer, i will even it all out, i think.

Aerya, you've got lovely hair:) I'm the same with milestones having to be solid. Otherwise, the name of the length itself doesn't feel satisfactory, almost like it's cheating(even though it's not). It's the difference between "longest hairs are reaching APL" and "definitely APL"

OhSuzi 18 months sounds like a long time! It's been four months since my last trim, but I'm on the 2019 no-trimming challenge, so it'll be 16 months soon enough. How are your ends doing? It's good that you have a hairdresser you can trust

Thank you! Yeah, I just want a very solid, passing the towel test APL before I call it. I always feel like I am cheating with pics too - it's too easy to accidentally add an inch or so! I took ten pictures before accepting that as my actual length, lol. Besides I feel like a very solid APL looks very different from just barely sort of there.

OhSuzi, that is so true lol! I'm just glad I am solidly past CBL - it's suuuuch an awkward length for me. Like I definitely needed a good chop but I regret going all the way there. I was gradually cutting off a bit at a time but then I watched a tv series where one of the characters had this adorable wavy shoulder-grazing bob and without considering that she has completely different hair from me from the looks of it, I chopped. *facepalms*

RubberDucky
January 8th, 2019, 05:55 AM
Like many others, shoulder to APL is the longest stretch for me. When I reach APL I might stay at that length for a bit since there are some layers that desperately need catching up. It all depends though on how things look.

OhSuzi
January 8th, 2019, 07:40 AM
Hah the other day I knocked the back of my hair dryer off & sucked up about 5 ml width of hair strand into the fan – instant dreadlock! So 4 inches length did get chopped off the end of that bit!!! Sad but I got over it.

Other than that Ends are surprisingly good! I thought there would be loads of damage could not believe that people really didn’t cut their hair for so long before lhc & trying it myself.

I am reasonably good to my hair – hair drying is for rare occasions (Especially after the incident!) and only on cool, no heat straightners, no hair brushes, no bleaches/dyes etc.
& I had pixie cut short virgin hair when I first started so no bleach damage to worry about
So I noticed very very few split ends I mean like maybe 5 individual ones in total throughout the growing process so far.

Recently, now that it’s long, I am guilty of putting it up with elastic ties (allbeit soft ones with no seams made from tights) but I definitely snap a few hairs everynow and then with em – so trying to plait it instead.

Figured I would join this thread as I am focused on growing my curly hair to APL and love reading everyone's progress! Makes the journey less lonely :)

Currently when wet/stretched the longest layers of my hair do reach APL (since last month). But with shrinkage it dries all the way back up to collarbone/shoulder length. And that's really what I am focused on, my dry hair length reaching APL. So I am sure I will stay in this thread for a long time lol.

I do have a lot of layers in my hair and plan to eventually even out some of them but not until I reach a length that I am comfortable staying at for a while. Not sure where that will be but for now, its all about growth for me.

I'm excited to join and read in on everyone's updates!

I didn't trim my hair more than a year, so this year I need some trimming to refresh my ends and get rid of some of my layers and dye.

See you in the next thread!

Whoohoo Lumienkeli that's awesome :) some great growth there in just a few months. Send some growing vibes to me haha

I just found out my new hairdresser is going on mat leave, so will have a really decent cut in 2 weeks (havent had a cut since May last year) and then I'll hold out for whenever she is back. I mostly get my regrowth done cos I'm getting very grey !! but will leave my next trim after this one til the end of the year . Will definitely be in Apl territory by then

In the blink of an eye and I’m already so much past the most awkward phase for me: shoulder-length. Time sure flies :)

Now I’m between CBL and APL but it’s really just another awkward phase, not short but not long either.

I’m already past my last awkward stage :D Grew past it so quickly, but of course I’m glad it’s over.

I feel like I am in the midst of the awkward stage and have been for past two years since I started growing out my natural hair lol. I am not sure how I am going to get out of the awkward stage! I have so many layers since I grew it from "bald" that it just looks odd. Though the longer its getting, the less unruly it seems to get.

I am hoping that with length, the layers will seem less extreme. I have been tempted many a times to get my hair cut by a curly hair stylist to give it a better shape and blend the layers better...but I know it means I will have to lose healthy length for my bottom layers! I cant stomach it knowing how hard and awkward this past year was for me. I worked so hard to nurture my hair and keep it as healthy as possible and it has paid off. I don't want to cut off any of that effort. So I am just going to hang in there until I get to APL and perhaps then I can try to maintain there for a while and even out the layers.

Congratulations Lumienkeli that’s fantastic :)

BerrySara I think most of us have had, or currently have, that layers dilemma. Mine was from growing out pixie layers plus post partum shed that made my ends thin, even at chin length. I wanted to even them up as soon as possible so I took the slow road as far as growth was concerned, and the last half inch of layers will go with my next trim.

I did a bigger trim once (just an inch) and it was frustrating waiting to get back to where I had been, so I decided that the best way for me was to have half an inch trimmed every 3 months, so I always felt like I was moving forwards.

BerrySara
January 18th, 2019, 02:25 PM
Lady Stardust that makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone and I am sorry you experienced post partum shedding (though I am certain it was well worth it of course!!). I do think that it makes good sense to take off half an inch every 3 month so it wont feel so drastic taking a big chunk off later on. Also waiting until I get to APL to maintain until layers are even may get discouraging as I would feel stuck.

I think getting close to APL I might just start doing something similar. Take off 1/2 inch of the 1.5 inch length gain. That should still give me 4inches of progress in a year.

Well I think the post partum shed was worth it .... but my daughter has just got chicken pox so ask me again in a couple of weeks :)

I’m glad that sharing my plan was helpful :) Half an inch isn’t really noticeable off the length so you don’t feel like you’re losing much, it makes the ends feel loads better and it’s always moving in the right direction! I get about average growth so yes it’s around 4 inches a year with trims.

I was quite stressed about the thin ends to begin with but having a trimming schedule really helped because I knew that it would improve again with the next trim so I could forget about it in the meantime.

It’s great that you’re nearly at APL and even better if you can keep moving forward and even up your layers at the same time :)

Hehe, aww I hope she feels better soon!

Do you trim your own hair?
I just cant imagine going to a hair dresser and asking specifically for only 1/2 inch off and not end up with far more than that taking off. That is just based on my past experiences. I do S&D of my own hair, cut off any fairy knots and even dust the ends when needed but I haven't actually attempted to trim my hair.

I’m lucky that I have a very accurate hairdresser and she’s great at communication. When I ask for half an inch she asks me to clarify whether I mean half an inch off the back and less off the front to square it up (since my hair grows faster at the back), or whether I mean half an inch off the front and so about 3/4 off the back. Basically, she checks down to a quarter of an inch, and then does exactly what we agreed. I’ve even measured at home afterwards and it’s been exact :)

I’d like to be able to cut my own but I don’t think I could do it very well at this length, and I’ve got nothing to lose by going to my current hairdresser (except money of course!!) I might be brave and try to trim when it’s longer. I have cowlicks that cause problems with the hemline so I don’t dare yet.

I agree to slowly trim out layers instead of big chops. I've got both layers and damage I need to get rid of, but length is really important to me - at this point I won't trim off anything but split ends simply because I can't stomach to lose any of my growth. I plan on doing bi-annual little trims until my hair reaches a comfortable length (waist or perhaps a bit earlier, I think) and then trim off more frequently, but still allowing a bit of growth.

I'm fairly sure any hairdresser would sigh and shake their head at me, but doing bigger chops would just feel like such a setback. I chopped from BSL to CBL right before joining here and even though my hair was incredibly damaged, I regret chopping off so much right away. Now I would have gone about it by trimming off almost all growth each month or so, slow and steady while still having 'long' hair.

The more honor to those who go for the big chop; it's awesome to just get it done and start fresh, but it's not the only option.

I'm still a bit unsure of how to proceed with trimming though. I do not trust hairdressers to cut off little enough, especially considering my ends are damaged, and I don't really have the money for it. I could get DBF to do it; he is no skilled hairstylist but he knows how much I care and would be very careful. Or I could do Feye's method myself which would be a bit uneven probably, but at least then I am guarateed to not have more cut off than I want. Oh well, I have until summer to decide. :)

I also started growing from very short hair so I'm constantly battling with layers. I did some bigger mullet cuts in the beginning but now that I finally have some overall length I'm keeping the trims as small as possible, even though I still have layers to go. Small trims, small trims...

Back in September I had my hair cut into a curly bob that is shoulder length when straightened. After a few turns to keep the shape, I have decided to grow it until it’s at least at the shoulders curly again. The last time I had APL hair it was a few inches below the shoulders curly. I’m excited to be looking for tips on the grow out again. Right now my hair is just hitting an awkward length curly when it is no longer a nicely shaped bob but not deliberately a shoulder curly cut.

My hair hit an awkward length too. Couple of months ago my front hair managed to form some very loose waves for a short period of time but now has straightened, instead my front hair has flipped ends. Like Rihanna here https://s1.r29static.com//bin/entry/4d7/720x864,80/1954418/image.jpg though some days the other side is flipped towards my face while the other side faces outwards :dizzy:

I need to be in this thread now, because I FINALLY got past collar length. My hair is just above my bra strap at my longest layer in back. I am keeping my light layers until I get to waist length because my hair is so coarse and thick, I can't handle it otherwise. I think I'll be starting to wear it up more once it starts to warm up a bit. I'll try to get some decent photos when my husband feels like taking some for me. Glad to be here at last.

I did love Bree van de Kamp's look but it's not for me personally :D same thing, it's pretty much guaranteed that I'll have flipped ends after a bun. I wonder at which length it will stop happening...

That's up to you! Mine does too and personally I will wait until it's a very solid, dry, towel test APL to 'officially' call it, but I think of it as APL. Congrats!

I know we've talked about it earlier in this thread, but I love how much difference a few inches make at this length. It looks, moves and feels so different! Yesterday I put my hair in a ponytail after wearing a bun for two months or so, and it suddenly does the swishy thing again! Ponytails has been my go to style for years and when I chopped to CBL I was bummed out at how short and 'round' it suddenly was, and now it feels a lot more like my old pony.

Same here, but its still a victory and a milestone of its own to reach APL while hair is wet.

I am at APL when my hair is wet and stretched but once its dry and curls up, its not close. I want to call it when I reach APL with my hair dry including shrinkage due to curls. That's when I will feel like I have graduated from APL goal lol.

I hear ya, shrinkage is frustrating. And I also get that for some its worse than others. I am seriously hoping that the longer the hair, the more stretched out the curls will be due to just the weight of the hair. And that the growth rate will feel like it has increased due to actual growth + stretched out from weight of hair. Ill take the illusion of faster growth any day lol.

My hair in my avatar is with my hair only half way dry. Once it fully dries it does shrink up to about CBL.

Usually don't feel much like posting as my hair growth is creeping on me slowly these days but just hoping I'll get there sooner than later. At this length I still can't do anything but a ponytail with my hair or a double folded pony tail, as it is too thick to try to make a true bun with it.

I remember having this problem too before i discovered my texture is actually 2a/2b rather than 1c/2a, lol (henna and other dyes ruined my true texture). Now it is just wavy all over the length and of course the ends flip in every possible direction.

Well, you can always look up ways to encourage your waves.

It's just that they seem more damaged by chemical dyes as my hair got longer. I am not sure if i will just keep growing or trim, since damage tends to travel up and my healthy part with natural hair can get damaged eventually. They also look very sparse because of the layers i got during my short cut.

I did curly/wavy girl method for a while back then, maybe I'll try it again and see if I can detect more waviness.

That was my experience too. Dyed length starts to look kinda bad compared to virgin hair when the virgin hair grows longer. Maybe just keep an eye on the line of demarcation and see if the damage can be controlled. My length was really damaged (dyed multiple times and I used to use a flatiron almost daily) and I cut it off when my natural color reached APL, didn't notice much damage in it. I did use helluva lot of silicones back then, maybe that helped.

Have you thought about cutting say half the new growth, so you’re cutting out damage but also gaining length? For example if your hair grew half an inch a month you would trim 1 inch every 4 months. You would still gain length this way. Even a small trim of half an inch can make a big difference to how your hair feels and how your ends behave.

Well i am not thinking about a Huge trim. I think i will trim 2 inches at most. Which is about two or three months worth of growth for me, so i will still reach APL by summer. :)

I keep measuring my hair and trying to estimate when I might reach APL but it just leaves me frustrated and impatient lol. Trying my best to leave my hair up and forget it.

That's where I am! I'm gonna have a busy next few weeks, which I like, so hopefully February will fly by. I have somewhere between an inch to an inch and a half left (on stretched hair) depending on where I measure, so now it's just time for me to close my eyes and wait 2-3 months (maybe less if I'm diligent with scalp massages and inversions).

I am very, very bad with measuring my hair, so I can't chime in with any good evidence. I do feel that I get a growth spurt during the months that I do the inversion in comparison to the months that I don't (I follow the one week per month rule). My thought is that it doesn't do any harm at all to give it a shot and see what happens. :)

Hmm I might have to try it myself :D I remember doing inversion years ago but didn't do it regularly. Even a tiny growth spurt would make a difference at this length.

Do you find your hair to be more oily the week you do the inversion method?
I would like to try but I have an oily scalp already and all that touching and oiling would make my head a grease ball and I'd have to wash everyday..

Not really, but I have a very dry scalp. I also don't use oil every time that I do the inversion - I might add a couple of drops the first day, then skip the rest, or some formula of that. Basically, if I don't think I need to put oil on my scalp then I won't. I also don't follow the rule of not washing the week I do it. I follow my regular wash schedule. Annnnd I only do 5 days a week (this is more because I have a very short attention span and by day 6 I'm over it LOL). Really, I think the basis of this method is the inversion and the head massaging - the oiling and not washing can cause problems for some people and I don't think they're totally necessary unless they really work for the person. So simply incorporating these in a way that fits your hair and regimen shouldn't hinder any results, in my opinion, if it works it works.

blackgothicdoll Thank you for your reply!
My scalp becomes oily by day three, so I already *need* to wash every other day/every two days :(. I can go longer when I'm at home, but when I have to go to work I can't be looking all oily because the environment is kinda official.
I really want to try at least massaging the head 7 times a month, but I'm afraid I'd still have to wash every day and more afraid I'd have a hard time adjusting to every other/every two days.
I think I will try it once I get off my period, I've been wanting to try it for some time now, especially now that I'm regretting cutting my hair.

You can do the massaging without oils though. My scalp doesn't approve of oil but I still do inverted massages. :)

I have also been trying inversion scalp massages but I haven't been doing them regularly to know if its helping or not. I need to try to it more often like a set 3 times a week.

Last night I decided to take a photo of my wet hair while stretched and I was seriously surprised to see that it is longer than I thought! I'm excited to see I am past APL at least when I stretch my wet hair! Although when it dries it seriously shrinks all the way up to collar bone and I reaaalllyyy want to get to APL with curls fully dry. Shrinkage can be so discouraging at times!

I took a length pic for Feb 1st. Conveniently, today is wash day so my hair is pretty much completely straight. As you can see I also don't brush my hair anymore since its always up. :D

My phone has a pretty terrible camera and the lighting was not great so not the best pic. My hair color is not accurate. Current routine is washing once a week, oiling it and putting a little mousse in it out of the shower and then leaving it alone and put up for the rest of the week. It seems to be working so far.

It really does look longer when its straight. Also the ends are flippy from being up in a peacock twist all day everyday. :)

Currently long bob (SL?) with my shortest layer (fringe) between eyes and nose. I have reached a point where I usually book an appointment to get a chin-length bob or a shaggy haircut with layers to give life to my curls/wurls. No more, I'm wading in growing hair territory, I have read that this is the dreaded part of reaching APL. I hope that I can reach it by Christmas 2019. My last haircut was in July 2018. That will be a journey of 15 months of going from CL to APL. Do you think that's realistic? Or should I wake up and smell the coffee?

I think that is definitely realistic. That sounds just about right to me if you have average hair growth. Are you planning on trimming on the way? I think for me its like 7 inches from shoulder to APL so it takes me just about 15 months. :) Welcome!

Patience is what it's all about here even for those who grow quickly. I'd suggest that you measure from your ends to armpit length. You can wrap a towel around yourself to help see exactly where armpit length is. Once you know how many inches you need to get to APL then just figure on 1/2 inch per month or 6 inches per year. That will give you a good idea of your timeline. I am getting close to APL and it was tough growing it until I finally got enough length to pull it back and put it up. Now, I love it and there is no looking back as I head towards my goal of waist length. Happy growing to you! ETA; opps I didn't see that you already had an answer to your question. I left my computer for a bit when I was in the middle of answering and then posted before checking.

Great tip about the towel, thank you! I'm glad you left the computer :) Will do that first thing in the morning. I'll post pictures soon. Six inches seems so...little. Yeah the wurls really make it look shorter than it is. At least they are pretty right? :)
And the healthier you get your hair as you grow it out sometimes you will see even more wave and wurls.

The advice given by bokeh is good advice to figure out length and how long it will take you to grow, you might discover that you have less to go than you thought you did. I always call 2 milestones, when wet and straight and when dry. It makes me feel better to acknowledge the wet and straight milestone because otherwise it makes me feel kind of like the growing out is eternal.

I know what you mean about triangle head! I had a blunt cut in the beginning but my hair never seems to grow all the same length at the same time so gradually my hemline becomes less blunt. Im just glad its long enough to finally put up without wisps falling down.

Hi everybody! I am still on this thread since my hair seems to not want to grow. It is so hard to reach APL!! Finally I can do a bun with a 4 inch 2 prong fork but I have to pull it very snugly so it stays. This is going to take forever to get back to TBL!!! I stopped measuring since it is just too darn disappointing... I am just practicing benign neglect. Something new I am trying is to not use cream rinse...but a bit of hair serum after my hair is sort of dry and then detangling. I am thinking that detangling curly 3b fine hair in the shower w a comb at TBL is what broke a lot of hairs and created a horrible halo and so I did a big chop since the broken ends were sticking out with my buns. Welll, just wanted to say hi again! My avatar was from a time before when my hair was a lot longer, but I like the pic and it is providing a huge incentive to me since I grew longer before so hopefully my hair will grow longer again. ETA.. And I know all about triangle head... :( Ugh!! :( OK.. I just measured since it is Feb 1st... my hair is now 18.5 inches long... sigh... :(

Looks like it's growing nicely :)

Thanks! :) I feel like I'm blind to my own hair, it looks the same in all the photos heh.

Okay, these photos are pretty terrible: no good place to take pictures in this house, the phone I'm using is beyond ancient and the lighting in our bathroom is just strange and makes my hair color even stranger. And the first photo was taken in my mother's bathroom lol. Just FYI, these are all direct links so you won't be directed to imgur.

My hair in January https://i.imgur.com/zYE2m6p.jpg?1

I tried a copper color mask after the first picture and haven't used silver conditioner in ages, so my highlights are not bright anymore. I think I'll just let the color wear off on its own.

Oh I can totally see what you mean when you say you think we might be hair twins!!!!! I thought that was me for a moment with the hair and the glasses lol. Yours looks so much shinier tho! Your hair looks so good!!!

I'm about mid-way (again). I estimate I'll be there around mid-2019, unless my hair is longer than I think - I haven't measured it in ages, I'll need to get around to that some time soon.

Welcome back to LHC :waving:

One consideration.....was the halo actually from breakage and not from new growth?
My new growth runs from crown to hemline so I usually have some sort of halo, and curl definition is beyond me because the products I'd need to manage it is too heavy for my fine wispy silver

Assuming your goal is the same....37 inches....then you are halfway there :eyebrows:

Good luck with your new plan and try to enjoy EACH STAGE of the journey :cheer:

Sorry to hear you're feeling so discouraged LongCurlyTress :( I haven't had this short hair in over 10 years. I didn't realize how daunting it would feel to start growing again and think about how long it will take... so I try to not think about it. Sending you some good hair growth vibes!

I know what you mean. The only way i notice that my hair grew is by being able to do certain hair styles more comfortably.

Oh yeah, definitely! I keep checking on how my nape hair fits in a high ponytail or high bun. Right now some hair won't stay up and I look like I have a small mullet. I'm gonna call it a mini-milestone when all hair stays put in higher styles.

Checking out my length in braid waves since I'm not even bothering with my normal shrinkage. I wonder if I want to measure by my stretched out hair, or by braid waves. I'll figure it out xD

And of course I'm wearing black.

What pretty waves. I am calling my milestones unstretched, but i think it would be very frustrating for a curly. :)

You may call your milestones however you choose. :flower:

I'm at that stage where my bangs are growing right into my eyeballs, and my longest length is doing the Bree van de Kamp. This is the most awkward my hair has ever been. The front is just a couple of months from being able to be put behind the ears, and way beyond being able to look good as bangs. And the length? Well, it's growing, but you can't tell, because the ends has begun to either fold over or tip upwards. This is the mini-braids pinned-at-the-sides stage, it's the ponytail but not really. It's ugh, just the worst! I'm hiding my hair in updos as much as I can 'till this blows over

Also, congratulations Aerya, for reaching beyond this most dreaded milestone! That length looks very elegant on you

Thank you! And you'll get there - the good thing about the flippy hair is that one day it'll be past it and you'll feel as if you grew so much overnight!

Lol yes I still lurk this thread, I couldn't leave you guys just yet. And with shrinkage and post-wash poof my hair suddenly feels so short. Seriously, my hair goes into shock after I wash it! For a good two hours or so after it's dry it is in full Hagrid-mode.

Your texture really is lovely Stray_mind :) and so is the color of that wall I see in your photos lol. Coming here is so inspiring but it also makes me impatient and frustrated... I already whined about this in the random thoughts thread but anyway. Even though I'm so keen to get to APL quickly, I know I'm gonna hate it  APL is probably my least favorite length. Could I get at least 30 cm/12 inches here ASAP, please hair gods.
