Well, I would go by the towel test myself. Anyway, littleghost your hair is beautiful and very close to APL!

The towel test is rather erratic, unless it's placed in a straight line between armpit to armpit. Hers is lying in a slight U-shape which makes the goal look further away when it really isn't.
I guess I should show you pictures of myself doing the towel test in different ways (and showing how very different results one can get with this method, even if you have the towel around the armpits), but I don't have DBF to help me with taking pictures right now. :p

I personally think you can call your milestones wherever you see fit (within reason), as it's only yourself you're cheating.
Within reason = within an inch or so, otherwise you're potentially giving other people unrealistic expectations of where they might be in x amount of time.

I agree with you. It's quite hard to determine exactly when you reach a milestone anyway, and it's not like the police will give you a visit if you claim APL when it's really 0.5 cm left. ;)
Personally I prefer to claim a milestone when it's been passed a little, but that's mainly so that I feel 'done' with my previous milestone and so that the next one is closer. :o

I love the idea of LHC police, actually!
***Knock knock*** excuse me madam, we have reason to believe you are operating a HAIR DRYER on these premises.
***Knock knock*** ma'am, I believe those are extensions? Please remove them immediately.
***Knock knock*** APL you say? Ah, we have a comedian here...

 They would never have any rest, those poor souls!
I already feel like a LHC police at times, telling people what they ought to do with their hair troubles and giving them tons of tips. I guess that's what inevitably happens when you spend most of your spare time on this here site. :graduate:
By the way, your hair colour looks lovely in your latest measurement picture (rather like my avatar). =O I wish mine were that light!

So i took a picture of my hair tonight, just to see how it looks, because it looked like i had some sort of wave pattern going on. I looked at it and i was really surprised. I brushed my hair to make it straighter and took a picture again with different shirt. Aand. Yep. It looks like I am one month away from APL and two months away from solid APL. That really made my evening. Here is a proof. Black line shows where APL is on me :)

The first straight line is shoulder, and APL is five inches away at the second next straight line. (I miss judged where APL was the first time I measured)

I'm sat at home today so I made a striped tshirt. I drew an apl line, then going upwards drew 1 inch lines.
I straightened my hair (naughty I know but I needed it to sit at its true length) and I am 1 inch away from apl!!!!!!!
Still a bit wavy I was 2 inches, and naturally dried just under 4 inches away.
So I should be at apl by the end of August but looking apl definately by the end of the year.
I so wish I hadn't cut 2 inches in January lol.
I am so happy. My aim is bsl but I have looking at my pics at least 3 inches possibly four to cut off for a nice hemline. Bsl is another 3 inches from apl which is the bottom of my bra strap. So it is only 4 inches away. That's 10 months growth for me. But with shrinkage and needing to cut I've no idea when I'll get there.
The question is when I get to apl and start cutting should I take all my new growth off or just half of it?

I am so tempted to measure again. May 19th was the last time I measured and I was solidly at 19 inches. I really want to wait until the 19th of June, but I just know it has grown, I can see the difference. The spring and summer are my growth spurt seasons. However, I am going to put it up for the next 7 days and wait it out. Patience isn't one of my redeeming qualities though, I may cave, just saying.....
I tried the Gibson Tuck today and it held for the entire afternoon, and look, no escapee tendrils, another sign that it is indeed a bit longer.

My hair sux, big frizzy mess! I've been growing out a super short pixie for over 2 years now, regular trims, haven't used permanent dye in 2 years, haven't used a deposit only temp dye in over a year. I haven't used heat on it, have used gentle shampoos and conditioners.. but nope, still wants to disobey me! So ready to start using a flat iron before I chop it off!
Anyways! Hi, haven't been on the board in forever.. very sporadic poster and occasional stalker here :waving:
ETA: butterflybutton, love the shirt idea! I need to do that!
So here I am so far.. hoping to be a solid APL by Christmas! My hair looks a bit uneven, I did not really brush it before taking the photo, though it is V-shaped...

Congrats Nay on hitting shoulder length! Exciting!
And thanks ladies, I know I need to hold out, it will get better as it gets longer and has more weight to pull it down, or at least I can bun and braid and see what that does for me.
I had just about reached waist length when I cut it all off into a short pixie in 2012.. but my hair had been colored, and flat ironed a couple times a week for years so I was looking forward to growing out HEALTHY hair.. now I realize it doesn't seem to matter how gentle I am with my hair, it just sux naturally LOL
this was my hair about 9 months before chopping it off, flat ironed:

I need to just be patient.. going to keep staying away from heat in hopes that as it gains length it will maybe smooth out a bit. My hair seems to be taking forever to grow too :/ I don't remember it taking this long to grow out when I've chopped it off in the past! Too many trims I think. I'm going to abstain from trimming until December. Yeah, that sounds good. Maybe S&D if I see any splits.
Ok, happy growing :D I need to go make the growth measuring shirt now!

Your progress is fine if you pixied in 2012. Right about average. Ignore the supergrowers and those lucky people with a short torso :pins: (just kidding )

OK, so I am edging oh so slowly towards APL! Straightened only about 1 1/2" from apl, but with my waves in all their fuzzy glory probably closer to 3-4". I have decided to microtrim every 6 weeks when I colour my roots as my top layer is a bit damaged from highlighting and heat tools for so long. I have been growing since christmas and I guess the longest layer was a fraction past cbl at that stage.
Just feeling like I am never going to get there :( I want my hair to be long but the damage on that top layer is really depressing me and I want my hair to be healthy too. How does everyone deal with staying motivated. I feel like I am trying to do everything right but my hair still looks pretty lousy and it feels like I have been stuck at this length forever.

Maid M, I too have been growing since December and am 1 inch away straightened from apl, with a 3 to 4 inch fuzzy shrinkage going on. The shrinkage seems to get worse as it gets longer and it is demoralising. What gets on my nerves even more is that I cut a couple if inches in January. Oh to have them back!!!
I think on average most people take about a year from shoulder to apl especially if you have waves or curls eating up the length. Mine doesn't look much longer than when I started, but I know it is as it all goes in a high ponytail now bar my new growth.
Hang on in there, you'll get there, the journeys half way along so are glasses are half full :)

Out instead of down! OUT INSTEAD OF DOWN. Baaargh. It would probably look longer if I didn't wear it up all the time, as letting it down just now for a pic it obviously has huge waves in it from the clip. But still!

Nesoi I really feel your pain. I called shoulder last July. I've been here nearly a YEAR and am still not there, wahhhh. I've got rid of a few layers though.

I feel as if I could have written what you said, here. I have made it to mid-back before, starting from a down to the wood chop, so why is this shoulder phase never-ending?:p
Today was to be my measure day, but instead I am going to wait until the end of the month. I don't want to be disappointed, and I will, if there hasn't been any progress in the last month. The truth is, if I let myself get discouraged I may turn to the scissors, this has happened in the past.
Stay strong!! You have beautiful hair and it will look all the more stunning the longer it gets!!
I'm glad it's not just me feeling the pain of 'this stupid stage' It does just seem to take absolutely forever!! Chin to shoulder seemed to zoom by, but now I'm stuck on slow-motion. Le sigh!

I'm not really looking but I think maybe three? My husband says one which makes me think...yeah, it's three ;)
Here's a picture from March:
*snip*
And here's one from today (sorry, the light in my office is horrible, but you can see the length)
*snip*
Out instead of down! OUT INSTEAD OF DOWN. Baaargh. It would probably look longer if I didn't wear it up all the time, as letting it down just now for a pic it obviously has huge waves in it from the clip. But still!
How many inches for you, do you think?
The waves are lovely! And you appear to be looking upwards in your March pic and downwards in today's pic which probably makes it look less.
I have about 1 inch to go, maybe less when it's straight(ish) like today..... aaaand I'm off to clean my bathroom mirror.

Inspecting that photo, it does seem that my hair has now reverted to growing downwards rather than outwards, so hopefully that will come for you too soon...

I think shoulder to APL is actually my longest stretch. Everything after that is 3 inches apart..? So weird. I think I must have a short torso on top of already being short.

I have a reeeeally long torso (have to buy tops from special shops to avoid a 90s look) but a high waist, so shoulder to APL is longest for me too, battles- thanks for reminding us that milestones get closer together after this!
Waist to hip is going to be a very long time for me. I wasn't going to grow it that long but LHC has made me think about it :hmm:

Not a problem! ;) I think shoulder - APL is one of the longer ones til you get to legs.. maybe I'm wrong. I remember APL to nearly waist going by pretty quick the first time around, it seems like it does get easier! Especially once we can do stick buns. :joy:

Woohoooo, I measured this morning and I am 20 inches. I measured wet but didn't stretch it, if I measure dry I always get 18 1/2 even though I know it's longer than that lol
When I straighten it when dry I am 1 inch away, thanks to the tshirt idea, so the tape measuring still isn't that accurate. I'm so rubbish at measuring lol
For me distance from apl to bsl is about 4 inches, but tbh it depends on where you measure it to doesn't it, top of bra is just over 3 inches. I've got a feeling when I get to the top of bra strap I'll be calling it :) from there I've got 6 to waist. I'm not growing that long though. I'm aiming for mbl.
Two-wheels you've got gorgeous thick hair. Great hemline.

I will find out at the end of this month if I have managed to make it to 20 inches, as well.
I know a few of us have posted photos of our hair, here on this thread, to share Updo and styling ideas with each other. This being a long hair forum means that our thread doesn't get as much activity as some of the other Show Us threads, which is more than understandable.
But, it turns out that a new thread has just started up for those of us with BSL and shorter hair to participate in. I have added a couple of photos already.
So, if you would like to participate or just drop by for some ideas and tips, not to mention a chance to see some awesome hair toys, here is the link.

It looks like my hair is brushing apl in the front and I think I'm about a cm from just brushing apl in the back. I tried to use the towel to measure and I think I'm getting close. These pregnancy hormones sure make my hair grow fast!!! (though I will probably pay for it with loss of thickness in a great postpartum shed like last time) It is nice getting over an inch of length a month (probably closet to 1.5 inches).

Same here. I expect to see my hair at APL in the first half of next month. Maybe first week. My hair is about 1-1,5 cm away from APL. And i think if i'd stretch out my waves, i'd already brush APL in the back... Ugh.. Finally. It's been forever! (10 months actually)...

I guess it's time for me to join this thread! I've been at shoulder for a few months now but I knew I'd be getting a trim, and I wasn't sure just how much the stylist would cut off (I had a fear he'd take me back to chin!) But, thankfully after my cut yesterday, I'm still solidly at shoulder, with a nice shape and fresh ends. This is my hair today, though I've just left it alone since the cut and it's all blown out straight, as I'm kind of too scared to see how much shrinkage I'll get from my waves. I've been growing out a pixie since January of '13, ultimate goal of waist.

Okay, been busy but it looks like I finally made APL! Funny because I had a huge stall and I was really frustrated, but then the last couple of months it picked up and I'm still back on target. I was expecting to make it this month. I think from the back it's still not APL and won't be for awhile but whatever. I shampooed my hair today and it dried straighter than usual, so I pulled down the longest ends in front and I'm definitely there. I am just almost to as short as I had ever had it until I pixied it. Wow.
I'll upload a picture when I have time, but for now, I respectfully bow out of this thread and move on to the APL to BSL thread, wishing you all the best growth possible. See you in the next thread. :)

I think by the end of the summer my longest piece will be APL.. my layers seem to be real wonky, which is unfortunate considering my last "trim" cost me close to a hundred dollars :/ I think I'll skip the pricey salons and start doing the ponytail on head trimming method. I do want a nice V-shape.. but not a wonky V shape lol

OK I recently discovered if I let my hair air dry, it's pretty wavy and doesn't yet hit armpit length. Also I guess I am due for a trim but I DON'T WANNA! Is it really so bad to let your hair grow even though you might have some damage in the ends...? Is it true that s[lit ends just crawl up the length?? I would love for my layers to catch up in the front but I really don't want to lose any length...what to do? Keep growing or trim? Oh yeah and I am growing out the bangs finally!

Yes, the damage will "travel" up the hair shaft. I would search & destroy, as opposed to going for a trim, if you have the patience for it. I understand not wanting to lose any length!

This is the thread for me! Yay! My first goal at least. I'm at/ in between shoulder length right now. I plan to get a small trim on the 30th of this month then again at the end of the year. I'm just a few inches away from it right now so I hope by 2015 (eek! It sounds weird saying that number) I will be there!
I'll probably try different ways to boost hair growth along the way (like as a science project :stirpot: )
I.e. : the inversion method, MSM, melatonin, etc.

Your hair looks so beautiful. So thick too and a great hemline. Congrats on your progress.
I was APL when I joined LHC but now I'm SL….I keep having to cut out damaged and highlighted ends….I haven't been to a hairdresser or had any highlights for 6 months. I did a trim this morning then a big SandD. I think I look better with longer hair but I would like to get my hair healthier before growing it. It may take me years to get to a solid and healthy APL hemline like seven77. I think next time I will do a big S and D and then a trim. Maybe I will take less off that way.
I don't see there to be a point in paying a hairdresser to cut your hair. I'm never happy with what they do. I would rather give myself a bad haircut at home for free. I haven't given myself a bad haircut yet, you just have to trust yourself. Give yourself a cut then pay yourself the money you were going to pay the hairdresser :)

What a fantastic idea, two_wheels, thank-you so much! :blossom:
I had my husband help me out and it is 5 inches from my shoulder to my armpit, so that would make it only 10 months to APL, I can SO do this! He also measured my length for me and I am at 18 inches, so my mini-milestone goal can be to make it out of the teens and into the 20's.
I am now re-energized, APL here I come!
As of today I am solidly at 19 3/4 inches. This is good growth considering, in my post that I am quoting, I was at 18 inches on April 27th.
Perhaps I will reach my mini-goal of 20 inches by the 1st of August.

This is funny! And slso true. I find this too. My hair seems the same as last September today even though last month I could see visible progress! I am so glad it is not just me. SO annoying. I get frustrated thinking nothing is happening but something MUST be happening as I do not suffer with breakage and I am alive therefore my hair ought to be growing.

Hahaha, yes, I agree with this 100%.
I attempted my first Gibson tuck last night and it did not work. at. all. It stayed for about 45 seconds and then suddenly all of my hair decided NOPE, NO THANKS, spit out all the pins and unraveled. I'll really be happy when I can do more updos than just tucked under twin Dutch/French braids and a very spiky crown braid (which I am rocking today). It's just been so unbearably hot lately that I just want my hair up and contained.

Molljo, I am just impressed that you can do a Gibson tuck at all! I can't get them to hold evenly on me. It's not that my hair is too short, it's just ornery ;) And I can't Dutch or French braid on myself either! I suspect my problem is more impatience than anything else. For spitting out pins, have you tried spin pins? They were a revelation to me. I could never get bobbies to stay in my hair but spins are amazing.
Measured this morning and I am at 21 inches  I was stuck at 20 for nearly three months so I'm really happy to have that extra inch! And I am just an inch from APL on me now :happydance: So I hope I can get there by September, when I start an exciting new RL project. Yay!

Thanks two-wheels. Unfortunately it doesn't look that long normally what with wurls and curls lol. I should be apl in August but I won't look it until October or November. Difficult to know when to call it when you don't have straight hair.
But when it does look apl I'll start cutting some of my new growth every month to let my shed re growth catch up. I measured the difference between my length and the growth at my nape which is looking quite decent now the other day, and the difference is four inches. So it will take me a year to thicken my hemline I would think.

Thank god for ponytails lol. Here's a shot of the initial pixie, then when I hit solid shoulder 2 months ago, and then an old shot of the last time I was past shoulder in 2006.

I didn't say it was a good Gibson tuck! It was a weird, sad, lumpy thing that did not resemble the elegant updo I was hoping for. I can also only manage twin braids, not single ones.
I've had my eye on trying spin pins for soo loong but I was never sure how much length I needed for them to work. Right now I'm ever so slighty brushing the top of my collarbone, but I won't feel like I'm solidly there until the end of August, maybe.
Welcome Ashflower89!! I have also been on the pixie to shoulder back to pixie yoyo for the last decade, so I am right there with you.

Get the mini ones I you think the regular will be too long. I've been using the minis since my hair was only just touching my shoulders. I'm actually thinking about trying the regular ones too now I have a little more length.
Welcome Ashflower and Pixiestar! 9.5 is a huge cut, wow! Your hair looks super healthy in your avi though :)

We are the same then, pixiestar. I made it a bit past BSL and swoosh, I was at shoulder. I actually went to a chin length bob last January and now here I am at 19 3/4 inches. Another six months will be one full year without so much as a dusting. Crossing my fingers here that I have finally found the resolve to stay focused on what I really want.....APL hair. Once there, not sure exactly, I am only sure that I do not want to cut.
Yes, let's do this together.:hifive:

Hey everyone! Shoulder-lengthish here, going to BSL and beyond. No idea how long it will take... hoping to reach APL at least by the end of the year but I don't have a really good grasp on how fast my hair grows. I take biotin when I remember to... and its healthier than its been in years so we'll see! Right now the longest bits are in the back and fall just past my collarbone, the shorter bits in the front are juuust now barely brushing my shoulders/able to be put back in a ponytail (there was more damage in the front). I've also got shorter parts underneath from sporting a long mohawk for 5 years haha. But those pieces are almost caught up to the rest, which is wild to me. In the summer it's almost tempting to reach for the clippers again...
That's part of why I'm here I guess! It's nice to be striving for things with others, my willpower isn't so strong about not changing my hair on my own ;)
I am going to henna it soon, but that's for hair and scalp health. Yep. Definitely not because I can't resist changing it all the time.

Welcome! :blossom: I've started using this spreadsheet (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=36275) to track my growth data. Very well laid-out and helpful, in my opinion.
I hennaed my hair a while back, and it came out great. Growing it out now, because its too much maintenance for me and I like the look of my natural hair. :)

Aaarrrgggghhhh the scissors are calling me again. I'm so close to apl when stretched so I don't want to cut, but boy my see through ends are driving me nuts. I'm having to wear my hair up every day now.
I want to do my snipping while I'm going from apl to bsl but I won't look apl until November with my shrinkage. That's a long time to keep away from the scissors.
My hairs not damaged, it's thin through shedding and leftover layers so it's not a case of healthy hair or long hair. It's just about thickness.
Does anyone else have the same dilemma and if so what do you do about it?

Oh gee - this sounds like me. I recently straightened my hair for the first time in 6 months and my longest layer was just skimming the towel! With shrinkage though probably 1-2 inches away when wavey. My layers are driving me nuts for the same reason, just too thin looking at the bottom, but I would rather do my trimming between apl and bsl because I simply don't like the way I look with short hair. So tempted to trim an inch or two but I am determined not to.
My plan is to hold tight until December and then it would have been a whole year of nothing but teeny tiny microtrims. Hopefully by then my hair will be a bit below apl and then I plan to cut the longest layer back to apl and then I will do another year of teeny tiny microtrims. This is how I plan to thicken up my ends without losing too much length! With any luck by the end of 2015 I will have bsl hair with thicker ends.

Wearing your hair up is good for protecting those thin ends, but I understand it just be frustrating not to be able to wear it down at all, which is usually one of the perks of shorter hair!
It really isn't that long until November. Why don't you join the Hair Up a Challenge until you hit APL, and then start microtrimming?

So, out of curiosity, what are the best styles to wear your hair in this somewhat awkward stage? My hair is really slippery and refuses to hold most anything but a ponytail or a claw clip, and the latter only sometimes. I kind of wanna stay away from elastics for fear of breakage.

With my wavy/curly hair, my hair is about three inches from APL. When my hair is pulled down or brushed down or blowed dried (which i am currently trying to avoid) it is two inches from APL. It feels like it has been at this stage for a long time now. After the initial crazy lady-growing out pixie stage, this is definitely the hardest stage. I didn't even visit the chin to shoulder thread more than twice! That period sped by for me, and I have a long neck! Why is this stage so aggravating?

Mine is in between a layered reverse bob and well anything! It's grown from that for about 3 months or so. It's almost impossible to do much with it now. It's okay down and curly the first day but after that I have to put it up. I just want to be able to do a french braid!

I've been really fed up with my hair this week and it's stupid see through ends, and I'm itching to chop it. So I decided to straighten it and do a length shot.
Anyway, looks like I'm nearly there, the bottom line is my apl line. So for tonight at least the scissors will stay put. I'll do another shot in the morning when it's wavy to see where it is.

I love claw clips but all the ones I find in stores lately have weird gummy "grip" on the inside that catches and rips my hair. It's a little maddening!
diddiedaisy, you look so close.
And rubytuesday, I know what you mean about having a long neck... I'm very tall and long necked and my shorter friend grew her hair out longer than mine in half the time "longer" because her build is much more petite/short than my giraffe neck.

I love being tall - apart from when it comes to growing my hair. At 5ft 10" tall it takes me so much longer to grown than many others. I keep telling myself, I am NEVER cutting again and this is the shortest it will ever be. My face needs hair! I remember wailing when I first had my pixie "I suit hair more than most people!". My family thought I was being a drama queen, but I am convinced that without long hair I do NOT look pretty! Vain, moi?!

and yes RubyTuesday... I'm 5'9" and my hair took forever and ever to get from chin length to shoulder. A lot of it was growing out damage and doing trims, but there's stil a good 4-5 inches between what I'd count as chin and what I'd count as shoulder. So fed up, I hoovered my bedroom before, I've not it for two weeks, couldn't be bothered ;). Anyway I have one if those wool carpets that entwines your hair so I use the brush bit to go over my dressing area. I then check the brush and pull the hairs off and repeat until I've got them all up. Well since I stopped my hair loss in January I've not got a lot off the floor. But today on my first swipe over I had a wig on the brush. I knew I'd had another good sized shed but I didn't realise how much.
I spent ten minutes before all the hair was off the carpet, and all in all it looked to be at least ten percent of my hair. I'd already lost 40 percent last year. Luckily my shed has slowed down.
It feels like I'll never get a decent hemline unless I cut right back to shoulder, which I am trying my best not do. It's a drag having to wear it up everyday.

My shed last year was stress related and I've got loads of new growth coming through from that one. This last shed has been post misscarriage, so probably a mixture of hormones and stress.
My plan is to get to apl with my waves which will be about November, then trim while getting to bsl. But I may just have to maintain at apl.
I think I've got it under control, I've started taking msm and biotin again which stopped my last one. I just need not to have another shed for a couple of years.

Well, don't worry about it to much. Try avoiding stress as much as possible, do something relaxing once in awhile... I never had problems with my hemline, so all i can say is to be patient or just do good ol' benign neglect. Think more of taking care of your whole body more than of your hair and when the body is healthy-the hair will be too :) i am sure you'll have the hemline you want in time.

ok, so my hair is just grazing my towel when straitened or wet!!! Won't call it though until I am about 1 inch beyond as I will be trimming back to get rid of one layer in my hair. So excited to finally start seeing some progress - just had to tell someone hehe :)

I've noticed today that my new growth on the top of the head has reached my ears. I still have a second bunch of new growth that's probably 1-2 inches long, but it feels so good to see some progress. I thought it hadn't been growing as I've only noticed the shorter ones that stick up lol.
My nape new growth is just past collar bone stretched. I estimate that it will take up to two years to properly grow in my new hair and get my thickness back. I don't mind loitering between apl and bsl though while I do it. But boy, hurry up and look apl!!!

I just cut 1cm off my hair. Then I got a bit carried away and cut again. When I measured what I cut, it was an inch. So I've just managed to get rid of 1.5 inches of hair. I need to remove the scissors from my dressing area. Nearly 4 months growth gone in a moment of madness.

Oh diddiedaisy! I know the feeling. That's why I hid all the scissors from myself!
The last time I did that I ended up with a buzzcut.
I think I'm nearly at APL. Do you count it from the front or the back?

July 20th, 2014, 02:19 PM
I think it's up to you, but most people seem to count it from the back.
I mean, your hair length is what it is, a name isn't going to change much :) so I think within reason, you get to choose your own goals.

I'm at 20.25" and APL is 23" on me.. Apparently I should be there around November - December. I guess we'll see! I haven't started towel pics yet, doesn't seem to be a point. I'm not close enough.

I just measured my hair and it says I grew a little more than an inch this month. I am floored. I must have remeasured five times. I always knew my hair grew fast, but that sounds insane. I will keep measuring monthly to make sure I didn't just get the first measurement wrong.

On one hand, I'm really glad I trimmed back in June, but on the other, it feels like I've been at shoulder for years and I'll never make collarbone, even though they're so close together. I'm also very annoyed that I'm experiencing a summer shed but not a summer growth spurt. Stupid hair.

Hi guys!
Here is my three months update of my towel test!
Sorry the quality of the picture is a little different because I used a camera with a self-timer this time and the color and clarity is not that great:

Getting closer! At least when I grab my hair in the back I can actually feel like I´m grabbing onto some hair, it fills my whole hand! The shoulder length is such a pain to get out of! Ack.

Just going to quietly slip in this thread. Stretched my hair is solidly at APL but dry it springs back up to shoulder length, my curly goal for now is APL which will probably take a while. :) Good luck to all of you on reaching your hair goals!

I know how you feel. I'd be at apl now if only I'd learn to put down the scissors. I've got severe see through ends through a massive shed last year so the hair needs to go, but I'm never going to get there!!!! I'd be at apl in a few weeks if I haven't chopped the other week. I just wear it up everyday now.
It is a long journey to apl though. Yawwwwnnn.

It is a long dull journey. I'm at the stage where it actually looks APL in the mirror with no towel (don't worry, I won't inflict dodgy pics!) but when I look with the towel I see I have an inch to go still. Unless it's wet. I'm there, wet :disco: hang in there!

Hey, thanks!
I actually combed my hair for that picture since I´ve been oiling it and keeping it up so maybe that helped.
And tell me about long dull journey! I´ve been in shoulder lenght for 1.5 years! Because I was trying to get rid of layers and was addicted to chopping one or two inches almost every month!
Now I started to microtrim and it sort of helped. Your hair is looking really long! And what a difference from that pixie. You sure had long ways to go from there!
two_wheels
July 29th, 2014, 05:26 AM
It is dull but the end is in sight for you, no doubt about it! I haven't trimmed since November because I don't mind the last few layers, they help with updos. I've been in shoulder-APL for a year now.
I actually started at zero pretty much- when I joined in 2011 I had unremovable henndigo. Went ultra short to remove it. The pic in my siggy is 6 months after I cut the last of the dye out. I'm so happy that I'm getting close to my 2011 length again! Where was your starting point?
eva888
July 29th, 2014, 02:26 PM
The journey from SL to APL is ridiculously hard!! Hmph! :steam
Anyway, I measured my hair dry today and I am at 20.5". I have 3" to go in the back until I'm at APL and I have 2.5" to go in the front to APL. I won't really count it until it reaches dry at the back, but I will be so happy when I get there in the front! :disco: I'm going to take progress pics tomorrow and compare them with my pics from three months ago.
It's so nice checking in here and seeing everyone else dealing with the same thing. Last time I grew my hair out I didn't know about LHC or any of the length terms I just wanted my hair to be "long" and it was "not long." so at least I know that I'm making progress!

Oh, wow! I´m going to throw virtual fireworks for you when you make it to APL! Really!!! :taz:
I started with hair that looked like this:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9023&d=1391218434
And the problem was that it´d never grow past that! Ever! So I chopped it at chin length to give it volume and see if being more heavy and blunt would help with the growth process. Crossing my fingers I´ll make it to BSL this time. :graduate:

I've got 2 inches to go as well, unstretched. I've decided not to call until I look it without straightening. I just need to learn to keep away from the scissors, I've chopped off about 3 inches this year give or take. I'm going to spend next year micro-trimming between apl and bsl to get rid of my thin ends. Well, that's the plan anyway....
Maid M
August 13th, 2014, 09:20 PM
I'm with you diddiedaisy, unless my hair looks apl the usual way I wear it (wavey) then I am not going to call it! I did a check the other day and my very bottom layer is finally just skimming the top of the towel. I plan to trim an inch off the longest layer in December though so am going to wait til then before I finally consider myself apl - hopefully after the trim I will have a thickerl hemline that is full apl. My year of microtrimming has been working great and I plan to do the same for 2015 - hopefully I can make it to bsl by end of next year. I too have been finding it hard to stay away from the scissors when I am frustrated with my thin ends but I have a great hairdresser who always talks me out of it.
Stay strong diddiedaisy - it will get there eventually :)

Well I have good news, my new growth is at last travelling and my ponytail circumference has gone from around 2 inches max in December to 2 1/4 inches today. Ponytail withers away to about 1/2 inch at the most. Hence the scissor visits!!! And I still have a lot of hair that doesn't fit in the pony for measuring, so I reckon by time I can get it all in (which will probably be at least a year with my slow growth), I will get to at least 2 1/2 inches maybe more. Can't wait to start micro-trimming.
Maid M, its good to hear your trimming has worked for you.

I'm sitting here wondering...When my back finally reaches APL, my front will only be to shoulder, which do I consider myself? Does it count if only part of my hair is there?
two_wheels
August 14th, 2014, 06:54 AM
I think you have to decide that for yourself, SunlightShines. Just like how you have to decide whether to call it when it's there straight/wet, or dried wavy, and whether to call when it's touching, or there on a straight day, or there most days.

I'd probably go by, if whether the back, when pulled to the front, is at APL. But it's what ever counts to you :)
As for me, I think I'm pretty close. Maybe just an inch and a half to go. An armpit isn't the most definitive marker to me. Because some shirt's armpit might hang down a little more....

August 18th, 2014, 02:33 AM
My hair was really curly yesterday, so I got my measurement tshirt out, it was only wavy today so I measured it wavy and then pulled it straight. The results are:-
Curly - 3 inches to apl
Wavy - 2 inches
Straight - 1 inch
By my calculations I will be apl wavy by Xmas. This is when I've decided to call it. Feels like I've been here forever, I will not go anywhere near the scissors now until I'm 1cm past solid apl. I'm too scissor happy. I would have been there curly now without my trims. I hope my growth doesn't slow down in winter, I've only been measuring this year.
I think once I get to apl I'll stop stressing about my growth.
How's everyone else doing?

It's not just me then taking forever hehe. I'm not sure where I want to end up at the minute, but definately bsl or mid back. It depends on how good my thin hair looks at various stages. It just takes way too long to grow. Borrrriiinnnnng. Having said that, if I stepped away from the scissors I'd get there quicker. :/

August 18th, 2014, 10:53 AM
Yeah, I know it's not that surprising but since I stopped trimming the layers (last time was November) it has grown more quickly...
It's all about quality, though- I couldn't have powered through the mullet stage for example. Had to trim it. If I were in a post-shed situation like you, I think I'd do the same as you and trim a bit, most people would. :grouphug:

August 18th, 2014, 11:07 AM
Thing is two-wheels I've always been scissor happy lol. Back in the 80s when I was at high school, I once cut my bsl hair really short one night on a whim. It wasn't quite pixie, but not far off. I've been chopping my hair ever since, I can't help it lol I remember back when I had Bon jovi hair, I was at an expensive hairdressers accompanying a friend who wouldn't cut her own hair, and the stylist asked me who cut my hair. His jaw dropped to the floor when I told him I did it myself lol.
I'm quite good at it, even layering, but updo's, with what magic is that done? :)
two_wheels
August 18th, 2014, 11:15 AM
Ha ha, updos are done with the combination of extreme laziness (so no cutting), tolerance-for-styling-errors ("romantic" is a word I like to use) and practice, in my experience
Maid M
August 22nd, 2014, 10:57 PM
Well, I am feeling very frustrated and discouraged at the moment. Did my usual microtrim but took a bit more off, although I don't think 1cm is that significant.....it just Feels so much shorter!!! It needed it so I am not that sad, I just feel my hair has been this length for ages and some days I wonder if I will ever get it past apl looking decent. It was just skimming the top of the towel wavy before the cut and now it looks at least 1 inch above even though that much wasn't cut - must have given more bounce to my waves.
Anyone else taking forever like me? I started growing December 2013 at about collarbone length with very layered hair and some heat and highlighting damage, and I still haven't made apl :(
Anyway, just had to have a whinge and a vent :o

Ha ha, updos are done with the combination of extreme laziness (so no cutting), tolerance-for-styling-errors ("romantic" is a word I like to use) and practice, in my experience
I don´t know if I´ll ever do any updo. I´m just sooo lazy! :ponder: The only thing I manage is a half-up with a claw clip. And now my hair is not that short and I could do french braids or other stuff, but nooooo....half-up it is, or maybe a ponytail with the spiral things. :coffee:
I don´t know if the updos will grow on me someday, but so far not feeling it.

I feel a bit silly, my hair feels so much longer and fuller today! I don't think it have grown anything noticeable since I joined really, but it just feels different :D really hope this feeling stays, it's easier for me to be patient when the hair feels good.

Maid M, I too started growing December at cbl. I'm 2 inches off apl wavy, in July if I straightened it was just approaching apl and I should have been there this month....but then the scissors attacked me. I had a good sized trim end of jan, a microtrim a few months later, then a decent sized cut last month. Like you my ends need to go , but I wanted to get to apl before trimming. Well, that didn't work out!!!
It does seem to take forever though and I feel I've been at this length for months.
I feel your pain :)

I think it does just take a long time. I was at shoulder last July and CBL in December too. I haven't trimmed since Nov 2013 and I'm not there yet wavy. The next milestones will come more quickly.

Haha, I used to practise braiding at night whilst watching TV. Fails don't matter and your fingers learn. Then it takes 90 seconds to do (I timed myself). Still a little slower than smooshing it all into a clip, but it always impresses people for a very small effort.

Mine does that too- I wake up one day and boom, it's longer. Then is the same for a while. I don't measure so I don't know if this is psychological or a real thing but yeah, I get you :)

I took three different pictures just to be absolutely sure ;) I'm so excited! Just yesterday I was dooming and glooming and considering getting an ombre or something to liven things up, and now today I am finally at APL! Only just, granted, but this is wavy, dry hair, unstretched, so I will TAKE IT. :bounce:
Off to the APL -> BSL thread I go! But I will still pop in here because I've loved this thread so much :happydance:

Yea, it can't be possible that it have already grown as much as it looks, maybe it has gotten to that "golden moment" where its getting enough past the shoulders to "flatten" a bit? (lol, not sure if anyone know what I mean :p )

:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: yay!!! Your waves look very Hollywood too... Hopefully see you in next thread soon!!
Estrid, my hair does that, yep, I think it's the wave pattern, first it flips out then it starts growing back in, and the wave gets knocked out. Then it starts flipping again which is where I am at the mo!

Hey, I was giving this a thought...I think I don´t care for updos because I´m not even APL. Maybe if my hair gets really long (crossing fingers) then I´d have to do something with it. For now is just for it to look more cute, but then it´ll be practical to do a nautilus or something like that. My braids now are just a couple inches long if I don´t french braid which I´m not very good at.

That's fair enough. If you like it down, I say enjoy it while it lasts!
I hate wearing it down (big part of the long hair thing for me, easier updos.)
