View Full Version : How much do YOU shed?

I've been shedding a little more than I normally do in the last few months. More than I'm comfortable with...I have been under stress, I've recently moved, I'm hunting for a new job, and the season is changing! I've only started to pay attention to my hair shedding recently! Like since...March.

I think that I shed less now than I used to. I used to clog drains bi-monthly with my hair, now I still shed heavily, but not nearly as much. But, like I said, I haven't paid much attention, so I could be wrong. I also have no idea how much is "normal"!

I know that different people shed different amounts, and how much they shed can also be affected by changes in diet, nutrition, stress, season, <insert a ton more things here!>, etc!

So I would like to pose the question: How much do YOU shed? What have you found affects your shedding? How much shedding is within the realm of "normal" for you?

Right now, I'm in the yearly autumn shed - and since my hair is about 3 feet long, it looks like a LOT. Used to scare me witless....every year I thought I was sure to lose all my hair.

I'd say that during The Great Annual Shed, I probably lose between 80-100 hairs per day, maybe a bit more. Other times, I probably lose about 50-80 hairs per day. The longer it gets (my hair) the scarier shed hair looks, but I just tell myself that it's not more hairs, it's that it looks like more hairs because each single hair wadded up looks like more hair.

I'm also experiencing an autumn shed right now. Normally, I shed very little, I'd be surprised if it totalled 20 hairs a day but right now, I'd say it's about 30 or 40 which is a lot for me.

I've been washing my hair once a week, and each time I have to clean the top of the drain in the bathtub that has a ball of hair, and I comb out even bigger pile of hair after my hair dries more. I think I shed a lot right now. I know it may just look like more then what it is since I have long hair and I only wash once a week so a lot of the hair builds up. It still concerns me because I don't see how someone notices a difference in their shedding if they already shed a lot? Or at least what seems like a lot to me already.

I have always shed what I consider 'heavily', as does my mom and both my sisters (and we all have hair on the thinner side of normal). I remember as a kid (with hair that was usually between BSL and hip) filling up my hairbrush in a couple days. Our family always had to be careful not to clog the drain, and we swept up big piles of our shed hair around the house all the time.

I count hairs periodically after washing. Over a year ago, when I was COing and at a lower body weight with a less healthy lifestyle, I was averaging 150-300 hairs per day (I washed every 2-3 days but usually had my hair down in between, so that wasn't even the full amount of shed hairs).

More recently I am using sulfate shampoo, and have gained some weight with exercise and good eating. Shedding has decreased (and my skin has improved hugely too), to under 150 per day now, which is still a lot in the world of LHC.

I have never noticed any stress-related or seasonal shedding.

Well, I have to agre with who said in the LHC world shedding can be a huge deal...even in little amounts. I take msm for shedding however, I think it is contributing to the anxiety I am feeling about my hair. I never really counted before finding this site. Now its all I do! Last night I deep conditioned and with finger detangling I lost 35 then because I played with my hair all night searching for the thin spots that I've convinced myself I have I lost another 15 or so. I have naturally curly hair but I do wear a lot of gel and hairspray in it so I must admit I sometimes have to wash daily. Also, my hair dresser added a lot of layers to my hair back in June and its been tough on me because I have always had blunt cuts. Now my hair looks and feels thinner. I've always been the girl with the flowing big hair! LOL its hell being a woman at times! LOL

I feel alittle better seeing what others loose..however is this all daily counts for those who didn't specify? Or am I loosing too much too?

September 20th, 2009, 08:54 AM
I think as long as you are not losing hair in clumps or having visible thinning at the scalp, all shedding counts as 'within the range of normal'.

As the OP said it's very common to lose hair seasonally, from deficiencies in your diet (vitamin or otherwise) or diet changes (I've know several people who lost lots of hair after going vegan for instance), and from stress, hormonal changes, and various medical conditions.

I shed about 15 hairs a day until my hair reached shoulder length. I was shedding about 100 hairs a day, every day last year and earlier this year. I got up to 200 hairs this summer, every day, and now since I've changed my routine it's gone down to 150 every 2 days. I miss shedding only 15 hairs, I didn't have to worry about hair everywhere.

About 100 a day. I was shedding 200-300 per day a few years ago. My hair was visibly thinner and you could see a lot of my scalp. Vitamins - the necter of the hairgods. :D

I don't know but I hate finding them everywhere:(
More cos they are messy than because I worry about their loss

Thank you, everyone, for the answers so far. It's actually really fascinating, to me anyway, how much variation in shedding amount there is between individuals.

And now I feel a little bit better about my heavy shedding. :D I may be able to make a life sized Cousin Itt with all my shed hair...but I don't feel as alone anymore!

I've been washing my hair once a week, and each time I have to clean the top of the drain in the bathtub that has a ball of hair, and I comb out even bigger pile of hair after my hair dries more. I have clogged many a drain in my day! With me, I notice a difference over time. Combing my hair, gently, after it's mostly dry, I'll notice a pile of shed hair in the sink (I comb my hair over the sink so that I can see it and clean it up more easily). Lately it's been a slightly "bigger" pile of shed hair.

A lot. I know that if I count them, I'll obsess, so I don't. As long as I'm not balding, I'm happy. xD

I hadn't counted the actual strands yet, but now everyone has given me the idea to. I think I would be the type to obsess over it, as well. But now I'm so curious...I think I might be doomed. :o

Hehehe. I do take vitamins, too. Sadly, I think I might take them more for my hair than the health of my overall body. I do feel that my hair and nails have drastically improved since I started taking them and became vegetarian (which was when I actually started paying attention to nutrition, hah).

Here's my take on it - shedding is GOOD, shows that your hair is alive and kicking, all doing it's bit every day. Some hairs are growing, some are resting, some have reached the end of their cycle and are shedding. It's good to get a continuous cycle to be honest - I would be slightly anxious if I never shed any hair; because it all has to come out, and I would hate for all my hair to be on the same shedding cycle, because one big shed could cause dramatic hair loss! So it's good to lose a good daily average, and see the new little hairs coming in all the time - it means hair will be consistently thick and growing at all different lengths.

So there - here's a big shout-out to shedding! I think it's a good thing, and I like seeing all the new little hairs poking through, lol.

I did have a massive shed about four years ago which freaked me out; but I do use kelp as a miracle cure every now and again, and also I know that it's normal and natural, and try not to panic...!!(Didn't always work)

It depends :p
Right now I've been shedding a lot, and I guess it's seasonal. It's slowing down tough, but maybe it's because I've been washing more often, so I don't notice it as much.

When I wash once a week (which is rule for me), I can shed up to 60 hairs a day. On wash days, it would be from 150 to 300 strands (tough I only counted 300 strands once, and I was scared!). It's usually about 100 on wash days tough, I think...

I shed A LOT. My hair clogs drains, even though I only wash twice a week and it's not long. My coworkers are constantly picking strands of my hair off my back.

But I have a lot of hair on my head, so it makes sense that I would shed more. I would never count shed hairs... seems kind of strange to me... if I still had a lot of hair on my head I wouldn't worry about shedded hairs, if I felt my hair was thinner, I'd work to reverse it or at least disguise it.

As crazy as it is...I found comfort in your post, so Thank You! :D You do have a good point that its normal to shed. Lately, I've had this "fear" that even though I'm shedding, I fear that the hair wont grow back in to this lost hairs! I think I need to stop reading too much into my daily hair loss and to stop counting.

After joining LHC and changing my routine, I started to shed less. But now that I'm back in school and under a lot of stress with homework and family problems, my shed rate has spiked. It doesn't help that I feel stressed when I see how much I'm shedding...

I don't count how many hairs a day I shed, sorry! I'm way too lazy lol.

I don't even count but I feel like I shed more than enough LOL. I shower daily or every other day max.

I have tailbone length hair and I typically lose about this much hair per shower:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=2161&pictureid=45862

I lose a bit more from deangling, combing, and brushing. I tend to lose more when I've done a deep treatment such as an SMT, a cholesterol/protein treatment, or deep conditioning. I don't know if it's because it sat on my hair for a period of time and weight it down losening the shed hairs? I'm not really sure but I do notice more hair loss after a deep treatment than I notice when I just have a quick CO or shampoo and condition in the shower.

oh I also wanted to add that if shedding is a big worry it might be best to get it checked out by a doctor and get referred to a specialist to see if your shedding too much because it could be due to a deficiency or hormonal imbalance.

Hurra, my hair must be extremly healthy than.
I do not count the shedded hair, but I notice a chenge in the amount with the changing of the season. Now it' s autumn and there is a lot of hair lying around and blocking the drains.
Only recently I extended my washing frequency and when I wash after a longer peiod I shed more then after only one or two days intervall.

Oh yes - I don't think there's any argument that shedding is bad. I noticed that I seemed to be shedding much more than I normally do, and I started this thread because I was worried whether my shed amount was outside the realm of "normal" by the standards of most people. If it was (and it doesn't sound like it, since I'm not the only one who sheds heavily), then I would have gone to see a doctor soon, because I know that it could be normal...or it could be the sign of a health issue (nutrition, black plague :P, and so on)! As strange as it is to ask about everyone's shedding, this thread has put me more at ease!

Definitely! I take my health seriously - I want to live long and have many adventures with my husband-to-be. :D

You know, I was thinking that earlier! But I also know that people seem to notice a marked increase in shedding during certain times of the year. It's fascinating to see the differences :)

I don't know if I should answer because I don't really know what my normal is and the whole reason I started conting sheds is because it seemed a lot more than normal.

But, for what it's worth, for the past two months, my average is about 125 a day. I brush/comb every morning and evening so it's not like my sheds are "saved up" until wash day but wash days still seem to be nuts. I washed day before yesterday and the total was 202 hairs (which is the most i've ever counted). And yesterday the total was 60 hairs. I've been up for an hour this morning and brushed once very gently and today's tally is 32 so far.

It helps to see that others are big shedders too. I've had bloodwork done recently to rule out anemia, thyroid, lupus, infection, etc. so I know my high shed rate isn't due to anything like that.

I don't think counting increases my anxiety. The gobs of hair that fall to the bathroom sink would have me worried even if I didn't count. I'd still be searching my scalp for thinning and bald spots and measuring circ. every week. The counting is actually helpful to me so I can see if the shed is going up or down over time so that if this goes away (pllllleeease go away!) but returns next year, I'll have something to compare to.

I don't keep track of her every hair like I do my own, but I do count my daughter's sheds. She is 7. In her morning brush out, she usually has 15-25 shed hairs. And the same amount in her evening brush out before bed. In wash days, every other day or so, there are another 10-15 or so. So her average is 30-60 a day that I actually SEE. She wears her hair down a lot and I'm sure she loses a few at school or wallering around on the sofa or bed. Her hairs are so fine and thin, I'd never notice them around the house. Anyway, my point is, if you were someone freaked out by hearing that some people here hat LHC lose only 5-15 hairs a day and you were afraid your 90 a day meant something bad because of that, take heart! My totally healthy and normal 7 year old loses at least 30-60 and probably more like 50-90 a day. And gosh, her hair is so lovely, I'm envious :)

Hi there!

I saw wondering if you use normal sulfate shampoo? I ask because I am a counter like you. I was never this concerned with it until my hair felt thinner and looked it at my ends. I,d like to think I'm atleast halfway smart LOL! But I never considered the fact that I had my hair dresser out lots of layers to my hair. Well...that panick landed me here on the board. I'm very grateful for this place! However, I became a counter and I personally go overboard with my worry of it. I had switched to sls fee shampoo and I was blown away at the difference in lost hairs! Plus I finger comb to too. I also started taking msm. Among hair vitamins too LOL maybe switching shampoos will help you as well. I have to admit my curly hair had more volume big hair thing going on with my normal shampoo though...and with having a lot less hair right now, I can use all the volume I can get. Yet, it I have 16 hair from brushing my hair out (like I did this morning) I obsess! Go figure!

Awww, thanks. I wish that was the issue. I usually use either pureology or giovanni shampoo and they are both sulfate free. I use sulfates about once a month but it doesn't seem to make a difference either way. I also take MSM, garlic, 5000mg biotin, EPO, b-complex drops (the kind that go under your tongue), and a hair skin and nails vitamin with some kelp/hosetail/bee pollen/aloe in it.

Maybe I'm doing too much in the way of supplements? I don't know but nothing seems to help and my scalp is always burning and itching and tender but there are no scabs or sores at all, it just FEELS tender. My DH thinks maybe it's because this is about the time I stopped nursing each baby and probably had my post-natal sheds years ago so my hair cycle is sort of "locked in" (my kids are 7 and 3) to shed during this time of year. But I think it's weird that I never noticed it before. In the past 7 years, I've had two children, three surgeries, and anemia so bad that I had to be hospitalized for two days but never ever noticed shedding like this. I'm really hoping that my body is just realizing that it's healthy now and it's out with the old and in with the new. But what I do know is that doctors aren't willing to look any further into it since I don't have any other symptoms. Only time will tell!

I don't count because my hair seems to be doing just fine, but over the course of the day, I'd say I shed between 10 and 20 hairs, not including whatever comes out in the shower or when I brush/comb.

I don't know how much I shed in the shower, but I don't notice any big balls or anything. Back when I stripped my hair to go back to blonde from black, my hair fell out like crazy and my drain would frequently get completely clogged. I haven't found any hair stuck in the drain in a long time. Thank goodness :) So I imagine I probably shed between 10 and 20 hairs in the shower, and I get some in my brush as well.

Ok I did a water-only wash today cuz my hair wasn't really dirty anyway and I thought it might help with shedding not to use any product. I was quite proud when I only saw about 30 hairs in the shower afterwards but I just detangled (note:finger combing only) and i counted another... 167.. so I guess that makes it the usual 200 :( I don't think i'm going bald but seriously how long can this go on before I have no hair left?

Also I keep finding "bent" hairs :s hardly ever any actual splits but what are these bent ones? I'm really gentle with my hair I don't understand...

bah sorry for slight hijack :o

Oh my goodness! The exact same thing happened to me this weekend. I got so excited when I only lost about 30 in the wash. But that feeling passed very quickly when a single swipe of my hand through my hair dragged out 15 hairs and it just kept happening until my tally was like 180. Then I picked hairs off of me for the rest of the day as my hair dried.

That exactly why I don't wash every day. I just cannot handle the grief. I know they say that washing won't make any more hair fall than would have fallen normally anyway, but I dunno. I think it takes me at least a day to recoup emotionally before I can go through it again *lol*

you aren't alone darlin.

I computed in another thread that the body grows about 100 feet of hair per day. Thus, one should shed 100 feet of hair daily if one's growth and shedding rates are in equilibrium. :)

For me, a good shed day seems to be about 50 hairs (average length 1 foot). A bad shed day is 100 hairs.

Bunnybee, I never saw those funny shaped hairs until I started finger combing. I think in my case, because my hair does not lay down completely smooth finger combing, when I lay down on it I see those funny shaped hairs. This never happened when using a comb, so I might finger comb first then go through carefully afterwards with a regular comb. Has anyone tried the garlic rinse? I would be curious if that would curtail some of the shedding.

I shed a ridiculous amount. Or at least, I seem to. Every time I comb my hair, at least 30 hairs come out from having been shed. When I fingercomb, anywhere from 20 to 30. Both combing and fingercombing is done frequently. When I wash, easily over 100, possibly as much as 150.

I find shed hair EVERYWHERE. In my clothes, socks, buttcrack, wallet, my friend's car (we carpool), in the cat's poop from where they've ingested it and pooped it out again, in my own poop once (don't ask), and my dbf has even found it wrapped around body parts he doesn't want it wrapped about. In fact, my hair nearly killed the vacuum this weekend.

My hair is waist length, and in short, I shed so much that I am actually considering cutting it (have been for some time). Not because it's thinning--its not. Nor because my hair looks bad or patchy, as it doesn't. Just simply because the shed hairs annoy the crap out of me, and the length of the hair seems to multiply my annoyance for how longer it gets. :P

Honestly I don't think I shed very much at all. I don't usually keep count, but I would be shocked if I lost more than 15-20 hairs a day. I finger-comb my hair in the shower almost every day, and lately I've been putting the hairs that come out off to the side and it never amounts to much. I don't comb or brush my hair out of the shower and only pull 2 or 3 out throughout the day when I run my hands through it. Either there's a bunch falling out when I'm not looking, or I'm really lucky, I guess

I mostly shed between 5-20 hairs a day! But I think when I'm stress and not enough sleep, I shed about 25-50 hairs in 1 day sometimes once a month or 2 times a month, not everyday like that! Mostly is 5-20 hairs in a day!

It has been quite awhile since I last counted, but I averaged around 80.
50 is very much a norm and over 100 isn't strange. Is wasn't surprised about the "high" shedding, I'm supposing it has something to do with the "The single hair is thin, but there's lots them." thingy.
It does make cleaning rather... awful.

I think I shed anywhere from 20-40 a day, but I don't count so I can't be sure. I have fine and fairly thick hair, so I have more follicles to shed! I used to shed MUCH more, but what made the biggest difference for me was getting enough iron and protein in my diet. In addition, very gentle products (sulphate free, 'cone free, as organic as possible) made a noticeable difference.

Hi Shadowclaw! I see that your from NE PA! I was born and raised in NEPA! A small little town called Great Bend. Its not every day I see someone from there! I live in South Carolina now. I just wanted to say Hey from a former Northerner! :D

I know where Great Bend is! It's up the line from my hometown. I grew up in Clarks Summit (just outside of Scranton), which is probably about an hour down route 11 from Great Bend. I also have family in Susquehanna, which is a bit closer, I think.

It's great to see a fellow NEPA resident, or at least a former one! Did anyone in SC make fun of your NEPA accent? My Scranton accent gets weird responses from southern states, and even from the southern part of PA!

Hi!! I am all too familiar with Scranton! I have spent many weekends down there! And yes, Susquehanna is closer to Great Bend. I had family over there as well too! Yes, I get busted on for my accent all the time. Actually, its weird looks and then they ask "You from 'round here?" LOL However, my husband is a born and raised southerner and has an accent. So some of his wording has worn off on me! lol Sometimes, I have to ask him to repeat himself because even I can't understand him.

It was great to hear from you! I'm hoping for snow for Christmas up there, we are coming home for 10 days! Yay!!! I can't wait, I miss the winter weather around the holidays so bad!

I don't count my shed hairs, but I do notice that I fill my brush up faster now than I did a year ago. Some of that is just length, but I've had two surgeries in two months' time and the stress my body has been put through has definitely made me shed more. I can definitely feel a difference in thickness between my hair now, and what it was six months ago. I'm pretty bummed out about it, so I've started upping my daily protein intake as well as drink more water, and I've started taking my vitamins so hopefully I'll see some new growth coming in soon. I do seem to have a lot of little 3-4" hairs floating out in a 'halo' when I wear my hair down, so maybe in a year or two when they're past shoulder length my hair won't look so thin and sad...

A couple brushfulls a day is normal. Not eating enough and that time of the month will make it more. Sometimes the shedding actually improves it, like pruning a hedge.

I shed like it's my job...
My grandma came to me the other day and stared at me incredulously, going "how do you still have hair on your head? It's all over the house; it's our second layer of carpeting..."

:D Oh, I have so had that reaction from people when I tell them that I have to use a broom to sweep up all my hair BEFORE I vacuum the carpet. From the sheer amount I can find sometimes, I really wonder how I manage to still have hair!

Oh my goodness...I didn't even think of this! It started getting quite noticeable about a week before that time of the month, and now that it's over, the shedding is ever so slightly less. Perhaps this was one of the factors in "The Great Shed of 2009" - I'm positive now that there were others, stress being the most prominent one. Ah well...I'll continue to dutifully take my multivitamin and brush gently, and hopefully it will subside soon!

I shed a LOT. Maybe I'm shedding more now than usual, but I shed a tonnnnnnnnnnn. Whenever I CO my hair, I come out with a handful of hairs (exaggerating a bit, but close!) I brush my hair over the sink before I wash it, and the sink is full of hairs by the time I'm done. Whenever I run my fingers through my hair, especially when it's tangled, I come out with TONS of hairs.

I'd never heard of the concept of an 'autumn shed' before. It's reassuring because I was starting to get a little alarmed... my hair is very thick so I'm not worried about going bald or anything, I've just been losing quite a bit of hair lately

Haha that's too funny. I remember going to Tennessee to visit my grandfather when I was 12, and a waitress at a restaurant couldn't understand what I was saying because I had too thick of an accent. Then my dad was like, "she's not the one with the accent, you've got one!" We also went to Canada when I was 15 and one of the border control people immediately knew where we were from by our accents.

I would say there's a good chance for snow this Christmas! Either last Christmas or the one before didn't have snow (I can't remember which :p), but it was the only Christmas I can remember where there wasn't at least some snow flurries. Old man winter has been pretty good to me in regard to snow on Christmas. Be sure to drive through Nay Aug Park in Scranton if you can. I dont know when you've been up this way last, but there's a nice light display in the park now. Hopefully no one will vandalize it this year :(

Thanks for the tip on nay Aug! I forgot they do the light show. We were up for Christmas last year. Thankfully there was a little bit of snow. I'm wanting my husband to actually see the snow fall! Last year however, he did manage to experience ice for the first time. Actually we were talking about it last night. He didn't realize how slick ice can be to walk on. Needless to say, he ate the gravel and ice in my parents driveway! I crack up thinking about it now. Too funny! Keep your fingers crossed for a nice snow storm between 12/23 to 01/02 for me. :-)

I shed very little most of the time-- it all comes out when I wash! Every time I wash, whether it's CO, CWC, or a full-on clarifying, I always come away with handfuls of hair.

I don't notice any thinning or bald spots, and I've gotten the handfuls of hair for as long as I can remember, so I'm assuming that this is normal for me. Maybe my shed hairs take a little encouragement to come out instead of just dropping out on their own, and that's why they all seem to come at once when I wash... don't know.

I've never counted them before, but maybe sometime I'll have to just to see. It really looks like a LOT in my hands.

If I'm healthy I shed around 20 hairs a day..anything around 30 is still considered normal for me and a small amount if you think of the average.

When I get really sick I shed around 50 hairs..and thats my culprit for bigger sheds. Being sick for a prolonged period.
Stress does not affect my hair at all.

I am glad someone else started this thread, as it was one I was going to start. I am shedding SO much, but it isn't anything new -- I've always shed a lot. I think it was one of the many things that pushed me over the edge when I did the BIG chop (to pixie!) two years ago. When my hair was short, the shedding wasn't very noticeable. But as my hair grows back, the shedding has returned with a vengeance. Of course, it probably shed just as much when it was very short, it's just that it wasn't as noticeable.

I counted the shed hairs a week or so ago, and it was around 150. I was horrified! Some days it's not that many, but close. And when I wash my hair, it seems to be twice that number, because I shed during the day AND a HUGE amount in the shower. I never know what to do with all the shed hairs -- I could create a small animal farm out of them.

I do take vitamins, do eat well, do take care of my health, but I guess I'm just a naturally heavy shedder. I am SO happy and relieved to know I am not alone with this "condition." Thanks to all the other heavy shedders who posted and offered support!!! :grouphug:

I'm also a heavy shedder. For me in coincides with taking any medication for any length of time (like I am now). I don't actually count the hairs (I don't know how I'd do that... when they come off a brush or comb, they are all tangled up!) but I can fill up a brush in one or two brushings. I cut down on it by taking biotin & selenium supplements, occasionally taking iron, and minimizing how often I comb/brush my hair. I try to avoid brushing/combing it when its wet at all cost, because that seems to be the worse. This system helps me keep the shedding down some.

Hmmm... it's hard for me to tell, as I don't actually count the number of shed hairs. And, I don't typically shed during the week - my tightly coiled hair tends to wrap around itself to the point where the shed hairs don't fall out on their own. I only see them come out once a week on wash day... and then, it's quite a bit. But that's every single strand I would've lost during the week, plus what I lost on wash day. When I look at it that way, it really doesn't seem like much at all.

Perhaps this next time I'll try to save the shed hairs and then count them all...

:grouphug: right back! :)

I shed a fair amount, but the last two weeks have been terrible! There was hair everywhere! I felt like I was drowning in an ocean of shed hair near my desk (where I practice learning updos and braids so I can read instructions, or watch the video at the same time), and I was losing so much in the shower, then again when I gently combed it out. I think it may be dying down now, thank goodness. But I turned to the LHC because I know, despite how much variation there is in shed rate between individuals, I could get a picture of what the "high end" of shedding was like. If it was too high, I would have seen a doctor, but now that I hear of other people being like me, I think I just shed "a lot" but not "too much" - which is of GREAT comfort to me.

I can relate to this! When I first started wearing a braid quite often, and wouldn't take the braid out, I was frightened by how much hair came off of my head when I finally undid the braid and combed my hair gently. There was tons of hair! Nearly gave me panic attack! Okay...not really. But I did have to sit and tell myself that I didn't lose that much hair over the course of one day, or I would have stressed out about it.

I still don't think I'll count the hairs...I'm so very curious, but at the same time, I'm afraid I'll obsess over it!

I moved to L.A. from Boston about 5 months ago, and though my diet didn't change my hair and scalp went insane, and I started shedding heavily. I still shed a lot, and it freaks me out, to be honest. Also, I imagine that my hair is thinning, but that could just be my paranoia. One thing that has happened is that due to my scalp issues, especially around my face, I claw at my hairline constantly, and I noticed I was getting a bald spot! Now I'm trying to find a routine that will fit the climate and sooth my scalp...

I started trying to collect shed hairs about a month ago, and I could only find about 10 a day, including wash days. In the shower I shed maybe 5 to 7 hairs.

Mama sheds probably over 100, and yet she still has so much more hair than me. My DBF sheds a lot more, as well as my brother-in-law. It really depends on the person, and I'm sure not every case really means poor nutritional diet--although many benefit from adding vitamins and better nutrition. :)

I'm a heavy shedder just like my mom. I went to the hair stylist, and when she was combing (she started from the top and ended up yanking the comb through my hair since it got tangly. She clearly doesn't understand my long hair.. and she also recommended a trim.) She told me I shed a lot, which I already knew, but it was kind of embarassing since my classmate was there too.

Just when I thought my shed was slowing down a little, my counts are back up. I just got out of the shower and gently combed and my grand total before 9am is 152 hairs and only 13 hours until bedtime. I fully expect to be at 200 by then.

I had to pull this thread back up just because I'm so excited. My daily shed is now less than the average 50-100 hairs!! For so long, I was losing wads of hair while combing before washing, after washing, and in the shower while washing. I didn't ever really count the hairs, because it was too depressing, but I'm sure it was over 100 a day. Today I took a deep breath, combed my hair over a pillowcase laid on the floor, and counted up the hairs. It was only about 50, and my hair had been up since Monday morning! :cheese:

I think I've finally found a routine that my hair likes, and it's showing its approval by not shedding so much!

I so understand your happiness, I went through stress, lots of stress over the course of 2 years and I had lost half my ponytail diameter. Hair looked terrible, dry, crunchy, dull..I found this place and starting doing things differently in my routine. Now my hair loss count is under 20, easily. It is very exciting and makes you feel like giving a big yell of joy for not going bald, after all! I hope you have a wonderful thick hair journey!!

I would guess between 10-30 hairs a day is my normal. That's a big range but I don't know exactly how many I shed because most of them are found on the carpet, rugs, inside clothes, and wound around cat toys (eww!). It would be easier if they came out in my comb or got caught in the shower drain, then I would have a more accurate count.

High five! That sounds amazing.

My normal shed is between 5-10 hairs. A day. For the whole day. Which sounds great, but once a season, I go through a week-long phase where I suddenly shed about five times that. Then, I'll wash my hair and about 200+ hairs will come out (which is TERRIFYING) and then it's back to normal. My scalp procrastinates heavily.

Just as an aside here. During the Victorian and Edwardian era, ladies who were shedding their hair or combed out hairs, collected them in recepticles called "hair tidys". At some point they even had the combings made up into hair pieces. You can see/purchase these antiques on e-bay.

Hmm! DNA from bygone famous people?

I never bothered to count mine until this week. I realized a month ago that I have lost half an inch in ponytail thickness. So now instead of shedding, I'm gonna actually try to keep track of these shed hairs for a while and get myself an average to compare to, next time I'm in a panic about shedding. So far I'm averaging about 50 a day.

If nothing else, it's helping me keep these darned things off the floor, sink, clothing...everywhere :D.

You know, I've never noticed big/seasonal sheds (besides the prolonged one I just went through, but I'm sure that was due to the things I had been doing to my hair, and not related to anything seasonal) with my hair before. I don't know if I just don't have them, or if they're too slight to notice, or if I'm just ignorant and don't realize when they're happening! :p

I shed 50-100 hairs I guess. I lose a lot randomly throughout the day though so I don't have the most accurate number.

Here's a picture of the weekly shed after my wash. I never knew shed hairs looked like so much, I feel like I should be bald. But I guess it's normal for me.

Usually 5 - 12 hairs daily.
Depends on the weather. :)
When my hair was neglected (irons/repeated overall bleach), it was anywhere between 20 - 40.

I agree. I have always thought that the 50-100 number was way too high (and some say 150 is normal!). Shedding fluctuates throughout the year, but for me, 30 is on the high end.

This isn't to say that for some people, 150 isn't normal. I think everything pertaining to hair is really variable.

[ETA] P.S., it occurs to me that this may have something to do with the number of follicles on one's head. This is said to depend on one's hair color. How does it go now, blondes are supposed to have the most follicles, and redheads the least, with brunettes in the middle? Is there a poll on daily shed as a function of hair color?

If I start counting my shedded hairs, my husband will think I have lost my mind. It's tiresome to be expected to have beautiful hair, and have it come without paying any attention to it. I'll count, but where will I hide them? LOL!

Me, too. Some days it may be fewer than 10, but I doubt I ever get to 30. Yesterday I colored and I felt like I lost a lot, but I bet it was only about 20 total.

I shed a ton! My hair is longer than I can ever remember it being, so maybe it's mostly the length of the sheds that makes it seem so much? I can ball it up to the size of a half dollar/fifty cent piece. They don't make those anymore, but it's bigger than a quarter (o:

Also, anytime I run my fingers through my hair, or comb, I lose hairs..........any time. I don't know if this is normal or not? I would guess I shed at least 100 hairs daily, more if I manipulate my hair a lot.

I wonder if biotin would help?

I have never counted my shed hairs, but I think my shed rate is about average. When I was coloring and heat styling, I was clogging drains left and right. But now, if I had to guess, I would say about 50 hairs per day.

I wouldn't worry about it unless I started thinning.

I am so glad to found this Thread.
I just post new Thread couple days ago.http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=44269

but after I read everybody's post here I felt my shedding might be normal.made me feel bit lighter.

I notice my hair shed a lot around last Oct.
I went to see Dr's (even I took flight to my country to see hair specialist Dr ,also he is dermatologist)
I had Blood test too. all result was fine.so I didn't care so much.incase I start to useing Nioxin etc.also more careful what I use. start air dry.try to not wash hair everyday.
I never count. however couple weeks ago I did count &
it was 168 and I got so depressed. maybe I never attention to my hair ( I was more into skin care) so I got too overwhelmed.

now I am washing my hair everyday. it was about 50 shed
when I washed my hair today.
if I don't wash my hair everyday it's more like 100+.

Not much. I'm lucky if I lose 10 hairs after washing and combing. S0 maybe 20 total during the day. 30 if I'm horribly stressed or something. I'm quite happy that I barely lose any hair. I used to shed all the time but since I switched to CO I don't shed much. My sister, on the other hand, frequently clogs the shower drain- but then again, she uses sulfates.

I don't know if I've always been a high shedder, but the last three years since my last baby, I' shed 110-150 daily. And I mean daily. Those pics you all post of what comes out in your shower is nothing, Mine are big wads and it scares me because I don't have that high of density of hair like the rest of you who say, mine's thick so I can handle this heavy shed. I don't. I've been taking iron now, daily but haven't noticed any improvement and I'm on spironolactone for PCOS. Very scary at 31 to think I'm going to lose my hair. I too, was the one with the poofy hair. Some of it I say to myself, is the fact that now I wear it naturally curly instead of brushing it out, so now it goes into clumps and you can see more scalp, but still, that doesn't make me feel good, and then to see all that hair. I don't know what else to do. Oh and I take 1000 biiotin, have been for many years.

My hair, besides being long, has really thick strands and I shed quite heavily. So a comb through my hair after a good shampoo usually yields a good clump. I shed like it's my job, hahaha....

50 hairs a day I think, though I haven't actually counted. My diet isn't ideal, perhaps I could reduce it by eating better.

I still wash and comb the hair of my two ten year olds (always head lice at school so I need to comb with conditioner on weekly as a precaution) and they barely lose any hairs at all. Maybe one or two each. I'm so jealous!

Kricket, I shed like it's my job too. It's a shame we can't get paid for our shed hairs -- we'd be rich!

Enough that I feel worried. I have always had thick hair but whenever I shower I loose a lot.

I shed A LOT. about 20-40 hairs a day? Sometimes a lot more... Seasons really affect my shedding. Hardly any shedding in summer, and a ton in the fall. Very weird. Stress also seems to matter and how much sleep I get.

My mother and I both have very thick hair (mine more so than hers) and shed a lot. My hair is everywhere, though nowadays my fiancé and I don't notice as much because my service dog is a major shedder. Amusingly, I am not the one who clogs drains, it seems to be my short haired fiancé and our short haired roommate.

I was combing my hair and I counted about 70 hairs I think number wise there is no exact number as long as you don't look or go bald.

I feel like I shed a lot but I don't think it's actually that much. My hair is getting pretty long (it's never been this long before, actually :D) and it simply looks like more than it is. But I still hate the feeling of seeing a loose hair by the ends of my hair, grabbing those same ends with my fist and pulling gently... only to find my hand filled with loose strands. But I think it's some kind of yearly shedding period for me now. :p

Wow, I was really horrified when I read through all these posts to see how much everyone is shedding. My daily shed rate is something like 5 hairs a day, sometimes a few more but mostly less. I attribute this to a number of things I've changed over the past 10 years I've been growing my hair.

Firstly, I'd say was my diet: getting rid of all the junk (sugar, dairy, white flour, etc.). I also take a number of supplements which I do believe helps. Next was exercise -- something I didn't do too much of before and now pretty much exercise daily. Scalp massages are something I do morning and night just like brushing my teeth, with or without a topical. Most of my 'shed' hairs are from impatient combing or getting caught in my sunglasses.

Prior to this I'd say I was in the 40 hairs a day range and up to 80-100 during periods of stress or when my diet was really awful. I'm glad that I made the changes I did, because I feel much better and reduced shed rate is a by-product of that. Considering that I want to grow my hair even longer, I'm glad that I was able to get this under control.

I think I was shedding over 150 hairs a day during the worst phases and maybe 80-100 'normally'. My shed basically escalated to these proportions when I moved cities, I guess because of very hard water here. I thought it would right itself over time, but that never happened. My ponytail thickness went from what was probably 5" or so to 3" over 10 years. My work schedule was way too stressful and hectic to resolve the hairloss, plus it was the last thing on my mind. But I think, since being on LHC, it's gradually reduced to around 50-60. I'm hoping that reduces further.

I seem to shed a lot more during the fall/winter. It thickens up during the summer though, but still very frustrating. It could be stress related, but it's hard to tell.
