I would really love to see some pics of WO and NW/SO LHCers who have transitioned into the land of perfect hair harmony.:yinyang:

Or Pics of anyone on either Journey as well.

I need some encouragement!!:hollie:

Thank you in advance.

Well, there's my signature pic... and this one, which I took for the ponytail circumference thread:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v117/Thinthondiel/ponytail.jpg

ETA: Ignore the fact that it's a bit of a messy ponytail... I just threw my hair in a ponytail and didn't look in a mirror before I took the photograph.

Oh, and I'm WO, btw. :)

Wow.....how long was your transition period? Your hair doesn't look greasy at all!

Someone asked me that in the WO thread as well, so I'm just copying my answer from there:

I've been WO for just over four months now. It was hard to tell exactly when my hair transitioned, because I was using vinegar rinses at the time (I'm not hardcore WO), and I realised in week seven that vinegar actually makes my hair look greasy/stringy without actually being greasy. After I had rinsed a few times without vinegar, the stringy look disappeared. So I had transitioned by week seven, at least, although it might have been earlier... I do know that I went through an oily phase in week five (it was different from the "greasy" look I got from the vinegar), so I'd say my "real" transition must've been somewhere between week five and seven. I just didn't notice because of the stringiness caused by the vinegar rinses.

Well, all the pictures of my hair in my album (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=3722) are of WO hair, except three older pictures (the one from April 2009 and the two older ones). I've been doing WO for about 9 weeks. After about 4 weeks I did a wash with some SLS shampoo, and since then my hair has behaved very nicely on only water :)
It never did become insanely greasy, it just built up over time those first four weeks, but it seems that the greasiness has calmed down now.

WOW what an inspiring picture string! You have lovely hair. Do you Henna as well?

Awww, thanks :o

I do henna - I am waiting for my oils to balance themselves out before topping-up my henna as I'm a bit worried it will dry out the ends and not 'take' to the top at the moment... so I have mousey roots at the moment! Also I usually use the Lush henna bars which have added oils, so don't know how that would work out... anyone here have experience of that?

I have been henna-ing my hair for.... ooh... must be 7 years now! I doubt my tresses would be in such good condition without it, tbh.

I'm interested in Henna but I've decided to reach my goal length and rid my hair of all the dye before I try it....if I feel like I need it at that point. Thanks for sharing your story!

I don't know about "perfect hair harmony" since I have more of a love/hate thing going on with mine. LOL But here are some pictures that I took at week 6. They aren't of my length because I was trying to get a good close up of my crown area to show that I didn't have any greasies. I remember at the time being simply amazed that I hadn't "washed" my hair in six weeks, and it wasn't greasy.

I've been WO now for five months, and my hair is still doing well. Sorry, but I don't have any recent pictures. I hate taking pictures of my hair because all I can obsess about is how thin it is and how I hate seeing scalp. That and the fact that I am one of the unlucky people whose terminal point is mid-back. As a result, pictures of my length generally depress me and so I decided years ago that the simplest solution to the situation was to avoid cameras. :)

Anyway, here are three pics from week six.

Hehe - you don't know the half of how cool they are! They have a zig-zag design in blue denim all the way up the sides :D my friend gave them to me because she always felt she looked silly wearing them... whereas I don't mind looking silly :p

Thank you for the lovely compliments, guys - I am actually amazed how nice my hair is with no washing... makes me feel kind of silly for thinking I needed to wash it every week, before

Thank you for posting WO pictures! I'm still having a hard time believing WO is working so well for me -- I keep expecting to wake up one morning looking like an otter in an oilslick. Or, worse, what if I suddenly find out my hair looks horrible to everyone and has through the whole experiment and I'm just crazy?

Your pictures are *very* reassuring. Really makes me want to buy a new camera so I can join in on this thread.

I agree. Pictures are very important. When I started thinking about WO, I searched high and low for pictures of people who were actually doing it. It's good to have that reassurance that we're not about to make a major mistake and end up looking like we haven't bathed in a month.

For me, I still haven't lost that small expectation that one day, I'll wake up to horrible, greasy hair. Truth be told, I find my self marveling at my hair at least a couple of times a week over the fact that I haven't "washed" it in months and the average person who sees me would never guess. But even more amazing to me is the knowledge that I don't use conditioner and yet my hair feels and looks better than when I did. Heck, I don't even do deep moisture treatments.

Here's a pic of when I did NW in 2007. NW was fine with me - no greasies or bad smells.

Nowadays, I mostly do WO and use a little ACV once week.

Sometimes I'll use a very small amount of very basic shampoo (a natural mostly made of natural oils) or occassionally a little Baking Soda - haven't used that one in a while).

Reason: Still experimenting to see how little I can manage with and how my hair responds.

ETA:

Found another picture. I used a little coconut oil (mostly on the ends) as well as noted in the picture (yah for notes!)

My photo album documents approximately 7 months from my first year of Sebum Only.

The first photo in my album was taken during the 4th month of my SO practice and the photos are sequential. The last photo was taken during my 10th month of SO.

I posted other photos in the NW/SO thread which are not in my album. Here is one of them, taken at about 1 year of SO. It's not the best photo due to the shadows from the roof reflected on my hair.

I really need to get a new camera so I can take some pics.

My hair's not greasy, though. I'm just afraid it will be. So far, it's been about a month of WO for me with hardly any transition period.

Bellalalala, it's good to know someone else went without much of a transition period. I thought I was imagining it or deluding myself somehow and that my hair looked gross to everyone but me. Your hair looks great and it makes me believe how good mine has looked on WO!

Twolunarspring: your hair is amazing!

After seeing all of these pics, I am motivated to eventually try water only. For now, though, I'll start with washing less often (used to wash every other day) and also trying CO only. Thanks for the encouragement.

I definitely think it makes it easier to go WO once your hair is used to around a week between washes, I think that's why it's going quite smoothly for me.

I'm going to try WO after seeing those pictures! I already wash once a week CO and WO in between. I have dry hair and I think it will work with WO for me.

I was only shampooing about once a week before I started WO.

My hair has always been dry, and it was painfully dry after shampooing no matter how much I conditioned.

It would get oily between washes, but I didn't really care, I hated the frizzies that shampoo caused, so I just put up with having bone-dry then oily hair weekly cycle.
I pretty much only kept it up to fight dandruff.

I have had no transition. At no point has my hair been greasier than it normally was between washes.
It is darker, thicker, has A LOT more volume.
As long as I scritch my scalp at least once a week, I have almost no dandruff anymore.
I really feel that shampoo, especially dandruff shampoo, was causing rebound flaking on my scalp.

Scritching is definitely a necessity though. My hair will smell musty if I leave it too long without scritching.
The smell is like a damp towel left on the floor...so not pretty, but easily avoidable.

Remember that sebum is not just an oil, it is the excretion of entire hair follicle cells that have been broken down. The cells themselves were filled with oils.
If it were just oil, there would be little for bacteria to grow on. However, nice dead cell bits are very tasty for bacteria.
This is why people who don't care for their dreadlocks end up stinking.

Thankfully, the plaques of bacteria are easily rinsed as long as they are loosened first.

I have my last shampoo wash 9 days ago und my first WO 5 days ago. So this thread is the right motivation to try a second WO instead of shampooing and stay to the WO-thing for a while.
Maybe I can post pictures of perfect hair harmony sometimes. :cheese:

Update!

So I took a pic outside to see if it was shiney. IT WAS!

http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss334/Ravenwaves88/14Sep09.jpg

I then took a pic of a braid. I'm still getting used to braiding.

http://i589.photobucket.com/albums/ss334/Ravenwaves88/14-Sep-09.jpg

So this is day 10 for me exclusively WO. My hair was super soft all this morning, and even after I took it down from work it was still soft just slightly oily.

My only problems right now is an itchy scalp now and then. I do Snowymoon's Technique twice a day and I wash once a week. I do regular scritching during as well. I have also been wrapping my hair up at night to avoid damage from movement and this seems to work since I don't have crazy morning hair anymore.

I'm overall happy with the results. Don't think I'm out of the transition yet.....but I think my hair really likes it.

I use photobucket. It's very easy. Just upload your photos, when they are in your album you hover over them with the cursor and chose the ling with IMG in it.

I can't wait to see your pics!;)

Yes. I'm a curly, more or less. I'm sure you'd get more information on the official thread, but before I went CO I went WO because I didn't own a bottle of conditioner (I know, bad, bad) and I was desperate to see if dropping sulfates could make a difference (it did). I went WO cold turkey for a month or maybe a little more. I washed my hair four times a week with WO and didn't experience a transition period (probably didn't stick at it for long enough). My hair was very soft and didn't look dirty at all, though my roots were a bit flat (easily fixed by a good scalp massage). It didn't affect the curl much. Less frizz than with using only shampoo which was what I had been doing. And that was it, really.

I like CO better for the moment, but when my hair gets long I may go back to WO for cheapness' sake.

Do you think I could go WO and still use products? I hate having to take forever in the shower to rinse and wash my hair, but products are easy to apply for me, just a bit of mousse and some gel, let dry and scrunch. So would I get terrible build up? I used honey for a wash two days ago and my hair had a bit of an icky feeling, but it is also soft and frizz free, maybe WO could be a possibility if I find the right products to wash out with just water?

Ingrid
September 11th, 2014, 04:10 AM
It probably depends on the type of products you want to use. Some of them are relatively easy to wash out with water, while others have some ingredients that still leave some residue which can lead to build-up.

I've been doing WO for almost two months and I'm considering giving up. By that I mean I want to run and shampoo my hair right now!
My hair is fine and thin and it's short - growing out a pixie - and I think it looks AWFUL.
Here's a pic of it yesterday, pulled back with a scarf headband to distract people from the grossness of my hair.
See how the front is stringy and piecey? Is that because of WO or because my hair is fine/thin? I don't know. All I know is that it looks gross :-(

Bettina, I know what you mean when you say piecey, but honestly I don't think it looks bad. It just looks like hair looks when it's not freshly washed. Are you practicing the "smp" routine? Scritch/Massage/Preen? I think that could help distribute remaining sebum along the length and reduce its concentration at your scalp.

I've never heard of this, and it's sort of blowing my mind. I dread having to wash my hair, so if I can minimize the amount of stuff I put in my hair, that would be amazing!

Is it possible to do this with bleached hair? Or scalps with mild dandruff?

I'm sure it's still possible to do with bleached hair - I started when most of my has was dyed and it still helped improve the quality. I'm not too certain about dandruff though, depends on what is the cause of it.

Pretty curls HairKay! I'm doing wo with dandruff/white flakes/whatever that is and my scalp is doing best on wo, but I have to remember to scritch daily. And I got huge flakes when I tried finger detangling wet while wo so I guess I have to scritch and comb to control flakes.
