After much consideration and a long day of shopping, I found a dress for the Navy ball. :cheese: The ball is October 3rd.

It is this color - http://www.mccullagh.org/db9/1ds2-5/red-rose-closeup.jpg

And a cross between these styles - top/middle like these http://site.babygirlboutique.com/myspace-grafix/mar-08/lolita-girl-ruched.jpg

bottom hem like this one - http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9g1xXeNqBDQ/SX9t4VTw8WI/AAAAAAAALcU/8q13yIS6K2s/s400/ANONYMOUS+VINTAGE+TURQUOISE+RUCHED+TAFETTA+MERMAID +GOWN+(5).JPG

So, it's a dark red color with a halter top and ruching to the thigh with a mermaid hem. Va va voom! The satin is lovely and it's not something I'd normally choose but it was amazing.

I want to go with a vintage look and I know that the hair can 'make' the dress/style (along with shoes and accessories)

What kind of hairstyle would be IT? :D I am willing to do some hair 'sins' just for this occasion, but nothing too damaging. ;)

Definitely try out one of the many updos here. I would actually check out the Updo threads here or browse the many albums here. At your length, I'm sure you can do at least a neat bun! Oh and please DON'T damage your hair with any teasing or unnecessary heat styling........your hair is way too precious to damage it for any occasion. Maybe you could also sweep your bangs to the side or slick them fully back and include them into your updo, that would look really beautiful!

And have a wonderful time at the Navy Ball. :toast: :waltz:

Well, if you wanted to wear your hair down, you could go for a Rita Hayworth style (http://screenmemories.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/rita_hayworth.jpg). You know, deep side part and big, retro waves.

I think a really fun, retro style would be great. Even something like the one the model is wearing in your dress link. There are a LOT of style vids on YouTube for "pinup girl" styles. Most just involve pinning and such, with a bit of hairspray (which, in my opinion, is perfectly acceptable for special occasions). Anyway, just my :twocents: from one Navy wife to another. ;) Have a great time at the ball! :)

This is of course based on the great dress you have and your desire to go retro :D I'd love to see pics of you all done up and dressed!!

The dress sounds GORGEOUS. Ahhh, I want to see pictures! I'm going to second the retro waves look, maybe with one side pinned up over your ear with a flower? I just went to my first Army ball - so much fun!

what about something like this?!

(I have bangs, and those just don't seem to mesh with styles with a roll at the front. Any ideas?)

Great vids! I have done something similar to those in the past, so they are definitely easy. And the curling iron isn't really necessary either. I second the idea of posting pics in full attire. :)

You could do rolls more to each side, and the bangs would give it a definite Bettie Paige feel. :) (Sorry for all the replies. I LOVE pinup styles.)

:) I just trimmed my bangs so they're a little more 'Betty' style and nipped the ends under to see how I liked them and it's super cute. :)

I don't mind the load of replies, it's fun!

That sort of thing sounds lovely and should look great on you. Are you going to roll all your hair up or leave the back down? With your cheekbones and neck I'd put it all up...

So, you've got a red, runched halter dress that ends in a fishtail hem. My first inclination is that that is a whole lotta dress and you might be better off with a sleek, elegant hairstyle.

What do your bangs look like these days? Are they still heavy and short as in your avatar or have they grown out a bit?

My first thought for hair is to form a fan-shaped chignon as in the video from Gossgirl I sent you and maybe do the bangs with a fifties forward roll, the continuous roll all around the front, using a rat or curled like this (http://freelancersfashion.blogspot.com/2008/06/hairdos-1.html). With vintage makeup that would be a very strong, dramatic look.

If you want something a little softer, you might look at these from Freelancers Fashion Blog.

The last link there is much like the very first style I described, but executed with a bit more romance, a little softer and not so dramatic.

You are going to look so hot! Please take lots of pictures! I adore the color (which I probably could wear well) and love the style (which would probably make my hips look huge:lol:).

AWESOME! I had already decided on pin up girl hair for a formal wedding we are attending in Nov, so you all have given me MORE ideas...whoop whoop!

You are going to look stunning for the Navy Ball! Do let us know what you decide!

Thank you :) My thought as well... plus, it would help show off the halter part of the dress.

*bolding mine

My bangs are in a Betty cut at the eyebrow right now. If I straighten them they look more modern, if I curl them they're rater vintagey. :)

I really like the first link. Looks like I am going to have to get practicing! (and I need to find some brown bobby pins. Japan seems to only have black! Darnit.)

Oh I wanted to add that these are the shoes I chose (versatile for other uses too!)

http://www.babygirlboutique.com/bordello-preen-16-black-satin.html

I thought satin matching would unify the look and a touch of gold would be a great way to accent some gold jewelry. I'm thinking a cuff bracelet and chandelier earrings? Gold clutch maybe...

They don't have brown at the PX?

They don't have brown at the PX?

I KNOW right? I've been looking for almost a year and all I can find is black bobby pins and also black hair pins. The U shaped ones. I finally bought some amish pins and painted them brown on the ends with nail polish.

That's insane!

Did you look around on Casey's blog and see the dress (http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2009/09/sabrina-fair/) she is making for the Navy Ball?
