Video of Hair Under a Microscope

Stumbled upon a neat video on YouTube... a gradual zoom-in on hair strands, that shows all the structures. Cuticle, cortex, down to the melanin and individual cells. I thought it was pretty interesting, the scope goes up to about 6000000x.

Wow, video SEM. It's one of the new ones that give color at higher magnifications too.

We had a thread earlier on hair microscopy (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=24889), but not quite that magnification.

:raises hand: I'm a dork!

When I was in 8th grade we were using a microscope. The first project was to do a wet-mount of a letter "e" from the news paper so we could see how imperfect it actually was (or something like that). Then some of us pulled one of our own hairs and put it under the microscope. Mine looked little bricks of gold. My hair was actually light or medium brown, but it has/had a golden tint to it.

I thought it was way cool. I did wonder what my hair would look like since I don't really have any melanin. That could be fun!

That was awesome. I with they talked more about the cuticles/cortex, etc. Seeing all the way to the cells was really unbelievable though. :D
