View Full Version : New(ish) updo (pic-heavy)

I was playing with my hair as it dried last Wednesday and came up with a new updo. Further speculation proved it to be rather similar to spidermom's bun-that-stays, though doable on shorter hair, so I'm not sure if it actualy constitutes a new bun or not. It isn't as polished as spidermom's bun, but I like to think it looks fun and playful rather than messy :p. Anyway, here are my photographic instructions for it.

First, gather hair into a ponytail (this didn't really need a picture, did it?):

Bring the hair up and wrap it around your fingers:

If I'm using a shorter stick, I'll only wrap the hair around my index and middle fingers rather than the whole hand. If you have shorter hair this might work better than wrapping it round the whole hand.

Next, wrap the tail around the base of the loop:

Split the loop in two and fold the right half to the left and the left half to the right:

Secure by placing the stick in one loop, under the middle, and out the other loop:

This style is secure and very comfortable; I've worn it almost every day since I created it.

Wow. And it looks like it didn't take you too much time to do it as well! Very neat! :toast:

That kind of looks like the Split Bun I saw in a blog a long while back, all the way down to using the split loop as a form of hair slide that works with the stick. I may have a picture of mine in the Hair Game thread, too. I have to say yours turned out really well! :)

Nice! I'd love to try it but I don't know if my hair is long enough yet

It only takes about 30 seconds to do, which I think is great!

I've never heard of the Split Bun, I shall have to do some searching. Thanks for letting me know! ETA: Having seen the Split Bun and its instructions, I think it's exactly the same. Oh well, at least there's pretty photographic instructions up for it for anyone who wants to learn it :p

I've worn this bun almost every day for a couple months now! It's my favorite. :) It holds so well and is comfortable.

I love it, thank you! I tried it today but instead of wrapping it around my hand I wrapped it around two fingers only. The result is this:

Very comfortable with a hair fork!

It's not the same as mine; looks good.

I'm wearing this today - it's great! Since my hair is only between APL+, I wrapped around a couple of fingers. It feels very secure! I did have to use a fork instead of sticks, though - but I have to do that with the Lazy wrap and such too. (fine, slippery hair) Thanks, florenonite!

That looks great, Feye! And I'm glad to hear you managed it at APL, rags.

Very awesome! Wow, that hair is getting long, lol. :D I think, after further research, that what I've been doing is a small variation on spidermom's bun-that-stays. It's similar to the split bun, but with a slight twist to it that makes it stay in even better. ;)
