I've recently discovered wearing a bandana 'cause it's so easy and keeps my hair out of my way (and my hands out of my hair, lol) and I'm so style inept it's ridiculous.......but didn't know if it could be negative in any way. I guess I'm thinking about how "they" say wearing hats can damage your hair. Do you think doing this too often might be damaging somehow?

I usually pull it back into a low pony wrapped only twice with an elastic (instead of 3 times) but figured I was doing that too much and needed to change it up a bit. And, as stated before, I am very style-challenged so braids aren't my friend and I hate how head bands look on me. Just trying to come up with some "short bus" options. LOL

I think bandanas are great! I wear them under motorcycle helmets, ear muffs when on the lawn mower and just for fun when I want it out of my way. I sometimes do a bun and then put a bandana on top of that. I don't think they cause much damage, at least from what I can tell. And there are so many pretty colors and patterns to choose from. :D

I don't know if a bandanna would hurt your hair at all, i notice i get scalp breakout when i cover alot...a twist is pretty simple and if you leave the ends out in a peacock type dangle it is lovley for your length hair. There was an article about doing this, check that section for other shorter hair updos. This does not require the dexterity of braiding!

I can't imagine why it would be bad and it looks really cute on you!

Maybe I can find some to go with the baby carriers I've been sporting lately in my pics, lol. :p

Oh I love bandanas!! I honestly don't think it would cause any damage as long as you wrap it comfortably without getting any hair entangled!!

I would think that bandanas aren't too damaging. If you were really worried you could purchase a few silk bandanas with cute designs. Silk is very gentle on hair.

Maybe it's damaging, but not much. EvaSimone posted great suggestions.

Hair issues aside, the only "reason not to" I can think of is gang issues. That may not be an issue where you live, but I know at my school I'd get in trouble with either the school or the students if I decided to wear a bandanna. Or I'd have to be really careful about what colour I chose.

if you're interested in the silk idea, www.dharmatrading.com sells different kinds of pretty affordable plain silk scarves. Some are bandana sized and some are larger, they come in white so unfortunately if you wanted color you'd have to dye them.

hmmmm.....hadn't thought of the gang issue....though I think my Carhartt for Women one shouldn't cause any problems, :).

The pink one in the pic is actually my daughter's (3yo) and once she saw me with it she promptly asked for it back, LOL.

So I'll just use my Carhartt ones til I can get some other's (maybe silk...thanks EvaSimone!).

Bandanas are awesome!! I've worn them for years. Literally. And I don't think I've got any hairloss issues stemming from them. Is this the same "they" who also say that trimming makes your hair grow faster? ;)

That looks really good. I could never get a bandanna or scarf to stay on my head like this, though. It would slide off very quickly. I don't think a bandanna would harm your hair unless it were made of burlap or something.

I have about 10 bandanas and wear them when I am doing dirty-ish jobs outside or even in the house. They protect my hair from filth and debris as well as the sun. And, of course, they look cute.

Also, I always keep one shoved into my purse for emergencies as they can be used for all sorts of things, from emergency "glasses case" (just wrap your sunglasses in them) to a tourniquet in case of an accident. Also, you may need to sit upon dirty ground somewhere or a friend in a prissy light-colored dress may need to sit on something dirty...it's just nice to always have a bandana with you :)

I love bandanas! I started wearing them wayyy back when I had braided extensions and just got in the habit. I have tie dye ones I find at craft stores (in the fabric paint sections), solids, hippy ones that have peace symbols, smiley faces, etc and the standard cowboy prints. Oh yes, I have supposed "gang" ones; red ones and black ones but I don't care. I wear them anyway. I'm wayyy out of school so I don't conflict with any dress codes, but I'm not giving punk gangs power over what color I want to wear. If I'm sporting a red bandana and a flowery tube top and red skirt and sandals, I don't think people are looking at me to throw gang signs, lol! I'm just a hippy witchy bandana wearer.
Love 'em, love 'em!!

bandannas are great. I wear them alot especiallu since i'm in art and teh chemicals and sprays other people use i dont want in my hair.

Also depening on what type of city you live in. yea certain colours(most of them really...) are 'gang' colours. Just dont really heed it if you live in a good community. city or suburb of a city thats very gang related i'd stick with silk ones. I find mine at antique shops. I lve my italian silk ones they arnt slinky slick silk but they are really nice.

I <3 silk head scarves

At my age, no one thinks I'm in a gang so I wear whatever color I want. And if they think I am in a gang at my age, they need to be afraid, very afraid

I know I'm long out of school age, but I don't think I could ever wear certain color bandanas because of the gang thing. It does tick me off. I do like scarves but have never been able to tie them so they stay on my head.

The only issue I could see is the gang thing, but if you're older, professionally dressed(or in non "gangsta" style clothes.), and wearing a non RED or BLUE(I capitalize those as those are the most common gang colors, though black can mean you're an anarchist, which some might view as a gang!) scarf. It could cause balding, but only if you wore it really really tightly for many many years(as some men do their hats). As I presume your hair grows at a normal pace, you likely will only be using the bandana for a few more months or a year till you can try some updos.

Black is Black Gangster Disciples.
Pretty Vicious.
(yeah, I lived in a rougher part of town for a while- I know what colors are what, but I always wore what I wanted to wear. I'm not a huge fan of Crips Blue, though. Just doesn't work with my skin tone.:D )
My hairline still grows into my eyebrows and I have been wearing bandanas for over a decade- including sleeping in them, but like you said, they aren't tight but they are snug.

Haven't read the whole thread, but all I can say about scarves and bandannas is just take care not to knot your hair up in them when you tie them. Otherwise, I can't think of any problems.

Ah, the anarchist radicals party(Hopefully not a gang. Otherwise I need to stop being related to and being friends with "gangstas" XD They certainly do a lot of crazy things, but violent things don't seem to be what they do!) also uses a lot of black bandannas(also, over the face to protect against the teargas). However... Most anarchists look like college students, because a lot of them are. They don't really look dangerous. Most are rather non muscular, and well, carrying around books and such. They look like the sort of people you'd ask to help you carry groceries to your car if you needed help. They wear the black due to mourning for Haymarket riot I've heard, but that does depend, some say mourning for the fact we still have a goverment and thus the decline of humanity. I wear a lot of red ones, which... Hai, I'm a socialist(And communist if I'm feeling all jolly. XD), not a blood!(I have actually been asked that. Then the person asked me if I was like Obama(Which... Our president isn't socialist compared to Karl Marx or any one else who's a socialist(and yes, I know Marx is Scientfic Socialism)). This was a middle aged man looking at our High school to decide if he wanted to move here and let his kids go to our high school. Wearing whatever you want is a good idea, but if you live in a very bad part of town and people don't know you're not in a gang, it might be a little bit tricky, esp during a turf war. But I'm sure you knew that already!

Oh wow! Thanks! Those are really reasonable!!! I think I may buy some from their site. I asked about this a while back and the suggestions I got ran in the $50 per scarf range. What's a good size for a bandanna. Mine is 24x24 that I use to sleep in.

I wear bandannas all the time while dyeing or painting. I have short hairs in front that get in the way and my slippy hair just laughs at clips and bobby pins and spits them out.

I have to tie it underneath, though, it would never stay on the way whiteisle is wearing hers. And silk doesn't work for me - just slides right off.

I wear bandannas all the time! I always wear one to bed to keep all of the hair around my head from frizzing. Occasionally I will also roll one up and wear it like a headband too. I haven't noticed any damage from them.

God bless,

~Ruthie

That's my yummy Baby Hawk. :D I've also got 3 Kozy's, a Gypsymama stretch, a Moby, and a Mama Baby ring sling. I think I may need a few more....lol. That's so cool you teach! I'd love to do something like that but I don't think I know enough. I do understand the obsession though!

I love bandannas and scarves! :rockerdud

They’re great for holding hair back, for playing “I have bangs for a day”, for sun protection, for hiding greasy days, for decoration, you name it!
