I have redheads in the family, so I think I have gotten my complexion from them. But I don't freckle in the summer. My old hairdresser (best in the world!) told me that I have cool colouring and that I should look for cooler reds. She was spot on, I recon.

To make life easier, I'm going to copy and paste the directions and pictures from the original thread:

I finally got around to trying my hand at doing an updo photo tutorial. It was easier than I expected! Now I want to do more. :) Apologies, though, for the hair-that-needs-washing.
This is an updo I came up with that I call the 'Nautilus Bun'. Partly because it reminds me a little bit of the whorl of a snail shell, but largely because nautilus is a really cool word and should be used as often as possible. :) I wouldn't be surprised if this bun has shown up here before under a different name, but I'm going to show three variations of it here. (Edit: Yep, apparently this bun is known around these parts as the Inside-Out Bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?p=515228#post515228).)

First is the Basic Nautilus Bun. This is a very snug bun that is one of the few 'dos that I can have stay up with no hairtoys whatsoever.

1) Start by pulling your hair back and twisting it snugly. You don't have to twist it all the way down, just the top portion. Start the twist low down on your scalp.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus1a.jpg

2) Loop the twisted portion up and over your hand. You want the loop to be as small as possible and still allow you to do step 4. You may have to experiment a few times to judge the right size of loop.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus1b.jpg

3) Don't twist the remaining hair, just wrap it around and around the base of the loop until it has all been used up. Stuff the tails up inside the wrapped portion to hide them.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus1c.jpg

4) Take the loop in both hands. Don't let the loop loosen up by rotating and untwisting - keep it snug. Place your thumbs on the lump of wrapped hair and push with your thumbs and pull with your fingers until the loop slides down over and around the lump of wrapped hair. If you made your initial loop too tight, you may not be able to do this - try again with a larger loop.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus1d.jpg

5) This should be the result. If use a loop that's just barely big enough to slide over the lump, it makes a snug bun that will stay up with no hairtoys whatsoever. (Well, on my hair, at least.)

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus1e.jpg

6) And the final result, from the side.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus1f.jpg

Continued next post...

Part two of the tutorial:

Variation number two is the Soft Nautilus Bun. This bun is larger and looser, and needs hairtoys - a hairstick or two will suffice. The basic technique is the same, but you loosen up everything that you kept tight in the basic bun.

1) Twist your hair very loosely and make a larger loop than you used for the basic bun.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus2a.jpg

2) Wrap the remaining hair around the base of the loop. Wrap as loosely as possible. Make the very last wrap fairly snug to help keep the tails in place and tuck the tail up inside the wrapped hair.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus2b.jpg

3) Take the loop in both hands. This time, if the loop wants to untwist, let it. You want the loop to be as loose as possible. Flip the loop down over the wrapped portion.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus2c.jpg

4) The loop portion should fit loosely around the lump of wrapped hair. A hairstick or two will keep the bun in place. If desired, use a few hairpins for extra security.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus2d.jpg

5) And the final result, from the side.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus2e.jpg

Continued again...

meichigo
April 18th, 2008, 02:34 PM
Third and final installment:

The final variation is the high, soft nautilus bun, or what I call the Nautilus Pomadour. This gives a rather turn-of-the-last-century look.

1) Start your twist very high. Proceed as you would for a regular soft nautilus bun - it's identical, just placed higher on the head.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus3a.jpg

2) This will be the result.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus3b.jpg

3) From the side, you can see how the thickest part of the bun sits on top of your head. This could be a pretty look for a vaguely Japanese style if you decorated it up with flowers, but I want a more Edwardian look.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus3c.jpg

4) To get that look, take the entire bun in your hands and rotate it 180 degrees so that the thicker part of the bun is at the back. Because of the initial twist that we based the bun on, you will find that rotating it one way will tighten the hairs in the scalp area, and rotating it the other way will loosen the scalp hairs. You want to rotate it whichever way will loosen the scalp hairs.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus3d.jpg

5) Here it is from the back.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus3e.jpg

6) And here it is from the side. Use pins/hairsticks for a secure hold. Gently tug the scalp hair at the front to loosen it up and make it poof softly. Since most of the weight is sitting directly on top of your head, this is a very comfortable hairstyle.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b275/greenwoodlady/nautilus3f.jpg

I hope this tutorial is clear and helpful to someone!
