View Full Version : Apple cider vinegar + rosewater + tea tree oil = Good idea?

Hello all!

I've been thinking of starting to rinse my hair with apple cider vinegar a few times a week. Diluted of course.
So I'm thinking of creating my own recipe for it, containing (yes you guessed it) rosewater and tea tree oil.

Is this a good idea? Will the vinegar somehow harm the effects of the other ingredients or will the other ingredients harm the effects of the vinegar?

And if not, what do you think would be a good ratio for the mix? I'm thinking 4 parts of rosewater and one part apple cider vinegar, and some drops of the oil.

Any comments, ideas, opinions, help, etc. are very welcome! :cheese:

I have used a similar mix for an ACV rinse, but much more diluted, with some plain water as well as rosewater. I do 1 TB ACV to 1 cup of water/rosewater, and a few drops of tea tree oil. So that's 1part of ACV to 16 parts other liquid.

What effects are rose water and tea tree oil supposed to have on hair? I thought Tea Tree Oil was a drying, astringent kinda oil.

It's antifungal/antiseptic, good for scalp conditions.

ETA: and the rosewater, I just used a splash of it for scent. I don't know if it has miracle properties, but it does smell good!

I'm currently doing WO-washes with occasional apple cider vinegar rinse. I find that rinsing with a bit of rosewater makes my hair slightly more shiny and adds a nice smell. The tea tree oil soothes my itchy scalp. :)

Ah, so a bit more dilution then. :)
Did it work any better than with just water + the vinegar?

I like the way the rosewater smells, so I use it still, but I don't really think it does anything special for my hair. Tea tree oil does calm my scalp down when it's going insane. I only use it when needed though, also because of the smell which stays on my head for days.

I've gone up to 1/8 dilution before, but 1/16 seems better for me.

Alright, thanks! Will try it tomorrow. :D

By this, do you also mean itchy? I've always been a bit clueless about scalp health. I can go for several days with out washing, but if I scratch, there's always this goop there. (I imagine it's sebum and all sorts of lovely stuff like that) I always ignored it as it isn't a big deal for me, but I was wondering if Tea tree oil does anything to help with the sebum production (or if it... "cleans" it or something  )...

It sounds like your scalp is fine. Having a layer of sebum there is healthy, and the scalp naturally sheds dead skin like the rest of your body; that's the goop.

When I say "insane", I mean constant itching, sheets of skin coming off, pimply bumps... that sort of major ickiness.

Just make up enough for a single rinse at a time, and experiment until you find something that suits you. If you haven't used cider vinegar before, I'd start with just that and get the dilution right. Some people use larger quantities and rinse it out, some people use smaller quantities and leave it in. I use 1 tsp cider vinegar to a litre jug, made up with chamomile tea (2 teabags) and about 10 drops of whichever essential oil I fancy, and leave it in. I have soft water, so I need less vinegar. I've tried using higher dilutions, and I either end up with greasy hair or worse, get horrible skin irritation from all the vinegar. Other people might find that what I use doesn't make much difference on their hair.

I've filled a small bottle with about one fifth vinegar. If it's too much, I'll dilute it with more rosewater. Still too much on the next wash, I'll dilute it even more until it's okay. :)
I'm not really fond of leave-ins, so it'll be rinse only.

Chamomile tea was an interesting idea! I just bought it yesterday. Might try that too. :D

It's more of a final rinse, really. I think of leave-ins as something stronger. I never really saw the point in using more vinegar than you needed and then washing most of it out. I've also used a highly diluted vinegar/water spray on dry hair when I'd been out to a smoky pub and wanted to get the smell out.

Just had my first wash with ~1/5th part vinegar. It went fine. :) Can't say I notice a big difference, but definatley nothing bad. Will try one more wash without changing the recipe. Might try to add more vinegar if I do change, just to see what happens.
