View Full Version : How often do you trim/dust your hair?

On average how often do you trim or dust your hair, this does not include s&d.

I dust my hair yearly, if fact the last time i dusted i had gone over a year with no ill side effects. My hair actually likes being trimmed less. I used to dust every 3 months now i realise my hair feels healthier the longer it goes without scissors.

I get my ends dusted once a year, in October.

Last year -- once every four months.
This year's plan -- once every three months.

Trim = once a year just to straighten ends
S&D = about once a month

I trim about three or four times a year.
S&D almost daily. I pick my husband up first, then while he runs in and gets our daughter from preschool, I have about five minutes sitting in the car by myself. I've taken to leaving a pair of hair scissors in there. It's not a lot of time, but it adds up.

I don't do either. :D Thought I'd chime in anyway.

I have a microtrim every 18-21 weeks.

I get a 1/4" trim twice a year, it makes a huge difference in the fullness of my hemline but I only lose one month's average growth total for the year.

My hubby trims my hair for me and does it four times a year. It is done on the first Sunday of February, May, August, and November, without fail. This is done only to fight the taper war. I do not have any split ends so I don't need to S & D.

Jason
April 17th, 2008, 01:34 PM
I've been cutting 3/4 - 1 inch every six months but might change that to 1/2 inch every 9 months. I'll have to see how my hemline looks when I'm due for my next trim.

jojo
April 17th, 2008, 01:53 PM
i cut one inch off annually and S&D twice a month

Lixie
April 17th, 2008, 03:34 PM
I S&D maybe every 1-2 months, but have no idea how often I trim my hair.

Isilme
April 17th, 2008, 03:40 PM
when it needs it. If the splits are too many to S&D away or if I want to shape my hemline.

camillacamilla
April 17th, 2008, 05:54 PM
I search and destroy daily....it's addictive. Microtrim, probably once every two months or so. I just trimmed an inch to get rid of a row of layers. I am going to try to keep my paws out of my hair for a few months now.

On average, since I joined LHC and started growing my hair, never! :D

I do S&D occasionally, though...

willowcandra
April 18th, 2008, 10:52 AM
I cut one inch off every two months.
I search and destroy when I notice a few splits appearing. (every four months or so.)
My hair loves being cut.

Usually Monthly 0.05cm

Right now I trim off all growth monthly for my hemlines sake.

Finoriel
April 18th, 2008, 11:34 AM
I trim about 1cm / 0,39 inch every other month, to fight tapering and to keep the hemline neat.
No s&d  too few splits to bother with this.

I s&d pretty frequently (kind of as a break from other things). Usually I trim as little as possible once every 4-6 months. I'm trying to grow out bangs though, so my next trim might be more like a cut.

KaeleyAnne
April 18th, 2008, 12:32 PM
I generally trim my hair every time I cut my bangs - recently I've been letting my bangs grow from eyebrow-length to mouth or chin-length before cutting, so I've been trimming my hair every 4-6 months or so (usually while on school breaks so that I could get my mother to trim my hair, though I trimmed my bangs by myself for the first time in December and then got my fiance to trim my hair - he did a good job!). However, I used to get 2 inches or so trimmed and now I'm trying to do 1/2 inch or even 1/4 inch trims. I just started to do nightly S&D to try to tackle some the split ends that pervade my hair.

Bellatrix

Once a month (after my menses, to keep track). I'm trying to grow out commercial dyes, at the moment.

I used to not trim at all for a long period of time. Than I started trimming and saw its very beneficial for my hair. I started with every other month and than for a period of time trimmed it every month and realizing I ain't getting forward with it dropped back to everyother month. Now I can't reach my ends so BF trims them for me once every three months. My ends are in great vondition no splits or breakage because I S&D them once in a while too.:)

I don't have a set schedule, just trim when I feel like it might need some trimming. And it seems like it's about that time already! Right after I buy myself a nice pair of scissors.

groque
April 20th, 2008, 08:38 PM
since Christmas about 1" every 6 to 8 weeks to even up hemline and get ends thicker. I started to lose too much thickness because of all the SDg. but now I can go thru hair and not see as many splits and stuff. OMG it is time for my trim. Can't believe it.

I am thinking about doing it every other month and 1/2" at most. I should probably trim less but I noticed my hair grows better when I trim.

April 22nd, 2008, 12:41 PM
I've been averaging about 1" trim every 6-7 months. My ends really need it by then. I don't S&D because I have no patience for it. I am looking forward to hitting waist length and maintaining that length for a year.

I trim once a year on my birthday if I remember or have another plan in place (which would be less frequent rather than more), and I've never done an S&D. My vision isn't that good and I certainly don't have the patience!

Lirazel
April 22nd, 2008, 01:21 PM
I s&d one or two times a week, when I see some split.
The last trim was 5 months ago and I don't know when the next will be, maybe next month 1cm (0,39 inch).

I haven't done either for 9 months. My plan is not to use scissors at all. We'll see how long that lasts.:)

I haven't trimmed my hair in years, but I do a bit of S&D every week or two. It has a lot of taper, but I don't plan to start trimming my hair again until it's about floor length. When it gets there in about two years, I'll probably start trimming every other month or so.

I have layers so I get them trimmed every 3 months or so. I usually only trim the length when it starts looking uneven or straggly or to remove damage. Just had a major trim of ~ 6 inches to even up a real bad/obvious layer/shelf.

I've gone 6 months with no trim, and I'll probably try to go a few more. Then I'll try to dust every 6 months, or whenever I see fit :)

tmmycat
May 3rd, 2008, 07:34 AM
sofoulee your hair has such a nice shape!

between me cutting it and my stylist fixing it after I cut it, my hair was trimmed a total of 2" last month but at least it has a nice shape now and will grow out nicely. :)

next trim is in 4 months but I will probably reschedule and wait a few more months if I don't have split ends by then. I just started growing and haven't gone more than about a month in the past without a trim so I'm not sure how many splits I will get.

I usually trim every 6 months, but my last trim was in Sep 07. I'm trying to see how long I can go until I feel I necessarily need one. I do need to do an S&D though.

Gladtobemom

I used to do it very often, on nearly a weekly basis.

Now, I just don't seem to get split ends since the old dyed stuff is gone and I'm using henna. I search and search . . . rarely a split.

Thanks LHC

I don't really trim my hair at all. I kind of practice benign neglect and so far my hair doesn't really mind, and it kind of just sorts itself out in the end anyways lol

Old thread is old. :) I used to trim 3/4 times a year to get a thicker hemline, but I'll try to trim just once or maybe not at all in 2016. :)

October 24th, 2015, 02:20 PM
I haven't really trimmed my hair since May, and now that I'm into the "I don't want to lose any length" phase, I won't trim for a while. But once I get to the "I can bun my hair again" spot, I will probably start doing microtrims and/or S&D. Eventually, I will do quarterly trims, and when I hit my "final" goal I will maintain a little better.

I micro trim every month or every two months. Im not here to grow, im here to maintain and hope thickness travels all the way to my ends! Once I get a super full hem, we'll see if I grow.

For the past three years it's been every 6 months. In 2016 I plan on doing it quarterly every 3 months.

I have, I think, typed all my trims (during the times I've been active on LHC) in my blog, but haven't really been calculating when to trim or how many times I trim. I trim quite often, I love fresh ends. I might do it on a whim, or sometimes letting the trimming itch grow for a while (until I can't take it anymore). I am also trying to grow out some layers (and let [hopefully] new growth catch up with the rest). But even when I would be purely growing, I would trim at least 4 times a year. Once I went for 9 months without trims, and I hated it. Most of my trims are quite small, often bare dustings, but I do think occasional bigger trim does good to the hemline too.

natural_shine
November 5th, 2015, 12:36 AM
Well... it doesn't split as much if I let it be, but I end up doing evil stuff to it, I dye it, than I think it's too dark and bleach part of it, than I dye again and find the colour uneven, than I henna to salvage, than I end up cuttin 2-3 cm of damage anyway and regret I ever tried to dye into my natural colour, I should of just let it grow. The bigger tragedy hits when the dye end up looking NOTHING like the reviews online and the pic on the box. The HORRORRRRRR! Chatain Cedre my ass, this is horrid dark brown, why oh why did I bleach for this disaster?... and forther on this calls for heaps of coconut and olive oil to get some colour out of it... work work work.

Why don't I just let it grow? Why can't I do that, why must I kill it every once in a while?...
returning to the subject- if I let my hair untormented, it behaves so well, I only have to do 2 micro trims/year and I'm fine.

ThrowNormanAway
November 6th, 2015, 12:58 PM
I almost never trim. When I do it's because I have something in mind for a change in my hemline or layers situation. I last had a "real" cut (with layers, ugh) in February 2015, so I'm trying to get at least to next February 2016 before I reevaluate. Eventually I hope to sorbs a year at classic doing small trims to work out my layers before I move on to thigh.

AmandaJane
November 10th, 2015, 09:51 PM
I don't have a set schedule for trims. I trim whenever I feel like my ends need evening up. It probably works out to about once every 4-6 months with 1-2cm taken off sometimes a bit more for the longest bits since I'm still growing out layers.

Ingrid
November 10th, 2015, 11:26 PM
Once a month, on the new moon. Once I get a blunt hemline and get rid of all the dye damage, I'll re-evaluate my trimming schedule.
