This new site is all very exciting!! Thanks heaps Stephanie for putting your time and effort into creating the new forum, and to everyone who has made helpful posts so far so we all know what on earth we are doing.

I was playing around and came across this Akismet key thing. It's an option when you go to set up a blog:

Spam Prevention

In order to reduce the amount of spam on your blog the administrator has provided the option to provide an Akismet key.

Wordpress API Key: (box to enter)

Anyone know what this does, and is it even beneficial to have one?

Oh and I'm adding tags to this thread, although I'm not 100% sure what their use is.

Some spammers target blogs by adding comments to them. The Akismet key is the feature that requires you to type in a word from an image shown in a box, and the letters/numbers are all distorted in a way that a human can read them but a machine can not.

Although - right now we've got blogs set to only be viewable to community members with 25+ posts, so the spam risk is relatively low.

We may turn off that feature since it's kind of irrelevant without blogs being publicly accessible from the internet.

Oh!

Thanks for both the question and the answer. :D

I'd noticed this, but there's been so much new stuff to absorb that I'd forgotten to ask about it myself.

That makes sense, thank you. :) Those "type the words in the image" things are really annoying!

Yeah, they are annoying. But not as annoying as getting hundreds of (usually pornographic) ads showing up as comments in one's blog. That won't happen here at LHC, fortunately!
