Do you tuck your hair behind your ears?

I'm wondering how many of you tuck your hair behind your ears and specifically what your reasons are for tucking or not tucking (if you have any!) Also if you tuck when wet or only after your hair is dry.

Some reasons for tucking or not tucking might be that you hate the way it feels, or you think your ears are too big, or you think it's just not good for your hair, etc. If you do tuck, is it because you like the way your hair dries when tucked, or you can't stand it hanging in your face or whatever.

I understand that many of you put it up right away and it's not an issue, so I was hoping to hear about when it is left down.

I only tuck my hair behing my ears when I am at home, or when I am doing something like studying, driving or something that requires me to be comfortable, not pretty :D I have very big ears so I would never do that if there wasn't a very good reason to do it.

I normally don't tuck it when wet, mostly because I don't like the feeling (cold and wet behind the ears, no thanks). shudder:

When dry, if it's loose, I usually tuck at least one side. I think it's prettier when it hangs loose, but at the same time, it easily gets in the way, hinder my vision and so on, especially since I don't have any bangs.

I do it, but only after it's dry. If I do it wet, my front hair will stay in that shape until it's washed again!

I much prefer how it looks un-tucked, but I inevitably get aggravated with it getting in my face while I'm trying to do something-- and behind the ears it goes!

Back in the 1960's when I was young, my hair was usually braided, or it had a ribbon as a headband.

Yes, and I hate that I do it. I'm trying to break the habit because I now have cheekbone length layers that really shouldn't be tucked behind my ears. It's hard to break an almost 20 year habit, though. :rolleyes:

Dont know why, but I always tuck my hair behind my ears. wet or dry. I never noticed until I saw a friend do it and thought "why is she doing that?" Then I looked and saw I had done the same thing. lol. I've always done it. subconcisously. lol. now I still do it but at least I am concious of it!!!

Right now I'm experimenting with drying it tucked behind my ears because it is just below shoulders and tends to migrate to the front of my shoulders and is really annoying. Wondering if I can train it to stay back for a while.

However, I'm having issues with the poof thing too, as my hair is really poofy these days and also has layers that won't lay nicely. :rolleyes:

I don't like tucking my hair behind my ears when it's wet because it dries in this weird way, like the shape of my ears makes the hair curve/kink in the shape of my ear and the rest of the hair doesn't, I don't know if I'm explaining this right lol but that's why.

My mother always has to have her hair over her ears, even when up in any style. She prefers how that feels, though I'm not sure why. (She has tail bone length hair as well.)

I used to tuck it because it got in my face when it was shorter - now, since it is long enough to stay behind my shoulders unless I lean way forward, I don't have to worry about tucking it...but as you already noted, that's pretty much a non-issue because 90% of the time, it's in an updo of some sort. :)

I tuck my hair all the time. I like to wear it down, especially on wash-day when it's curly, but when I'm studying or reading it gets in my face, which is really annoying.

I only tuck when my wispies are falling out of an updo - if I'm wearing my hair down I try to touch it as little as possible. Yes. Unless it's too short. Personally, I think untucked hair looks kinda strange and like you're trying to hide your face. It does vary person to person, and my experiences may be colored by the fact most people I know who have longer hair and don't tuck are trying to hide zits with bang type things.

This thread has been a bit of a revelation for me!! I dont tuck and never have done and thats primarily because I have small ears! I didnt realise they were quite as common as they appear to be!

Saying that, mine are also incredibly soft and can be folded right up on themselves. They also sit very close to my head I dont have any lobe to talk of. I cant wait earbud headphones either as they just fall out!

No, I don't like that. I remember several years ago I went to a salon to get my hair layered. I usually wear the front of my hair hanging down close to my face. I remember after the cut, the stylist kept combing my hair behind my ears. I would pull it forward and she would then comb it back behind my ears again. I finally had to tell her that I don't like to wear my hair like that. She kept telling me how cute it would be. I found it very uncomfortable. I would rather wear bobbie pins than to tuck it.

No, I don't like that. I remember several years ago I went to a salon to get my hair layered. I usually wear the front of my hair hanging down close to my face. I remember after the cut, the stylist kept combing my hair behind my ears. I would pull it forward and she would then comb it back behind my ears again. I finally had to tell her that I don't like to wear my hair like that. She kept telling me how cute it would be. I found it very uncomfortable. I would rather wear bobbie pins than to tuck it.

Ack! I hate it when stylists do that! When I would go in for a short haircut the stylist would always say how versatile short hair was ... for example tucking it behind your ears for a new look, or using various products to change the texture. It was all a ploy to get you to buy more product and to come in more often. Short hair is NOT more versatile!

I don't usually wear my hair down, so most days it isn't a problem. Whenever I do wear hair down, I usually have a small ammount clipped over my middle parting. This mini half up stops my hair from getting in my face, which I hate! I find that with this style I don;t really tuck!

I'm definitely a "tucker". That's a direct quote from my two most recent (over the last 20 years) hairdressers who know me well enough not to put product in my hair when we are 'done' and that I will inevitably "tuck" my hair.

I work in the legal world and I spend a bit of time reading actual books and paper on a desk, so I reflexively tuck it behind the ears to keep it out of the way, unless I don't want people to see what I'm reading..... :) Only time I wouldn't reflexively tuck my hair behind my ears is when my hair is pulled back in the current "proto ponytail"... but I *still* tuck the elflocks that slip out of the ponytail behind my ears.

If I want it out of the way, I'll quickly do a wrapped hairstick bun, which takes about 10 seconds. I always have a hairstick handy. :)

I generally tuck on instinct, but don't like the look of an un-framed face all the time. Normally my hair is in pride braids/pigtails, so my face is framed and I'm all happy. When I do my hair up in back, I sometimes separate out long bits of what would be bangs/fringe either to the left or right of center and let it hang. Sometimes I let bits down on both sides and maintain my natural part. I started doing this back when I still was growing my bangs out to length, thinking I look ultra cool and mildly mysterious... then halfway through the day, realize that it has somehow found itself tucked back behind my ear. My spouse says he thinks it's pretty, and then asks why I leave it down if I'm just going to tuck it back. I tell him I don't know and keep doing it.

I used to. Back in highschool I couldn't stop tucking my hair behind my ears, which drove me nuts because it really didn't look good like that. When I bobbed my hair it was no longer tempting or possible really so the habit was broken. When I started growing out again I was able to do so without the impulse to tuck anymore. It's so much better. And it only took six years bobbed to break the habit.

Bobbing also allowed me to move my part easily for the first time ever. That's another thing I've been careful about since growing out, not letting my part get to settled again.

After one year of growth from a pixie (yeah!) I find that I tuck all the time. I've been told that I have a heart shaped face, but to me it looks kinda round and fat when I just let my hair hang with no tucking. I don't know why tucking would make my face appear slimmer to me, but it does.
