So, my aunt has sent me some pictures of my great grandmother. I found her outfits to be lovely, but I of course noticed her hair! :) Anyone recognize this hairstyle? Not that I have long enough hair to do a serious updo, but I'd still like to know. :)

Check out this ginormous hat!!!

And here is her mom, my great-great grandmother. She loved fishing. lol She even has a fish in her bucket. :) She looks like she just has her hair pulled back in a braided bun. But, I'm wondering if she just has her bun covered by some dark cloth?? When first looking at this photo, I just thought she had white hair in the front, but after looking at it longer, she appears to have a cloth head band of sorts on the front of her hair. Maybe it was to keep her hat (on the ground beside her) clean? (although, if that was the case, she wouldn't really put her white hat on the ground. lol )Do you think she looks slightly Native American? (Blackfoot) Someone from that side has Blackfoot, but we aren't sure who. I think it would come from them, as my great grandfather was French and German.

My great Grandmother, in the first two pictures grew up in the early 1900's if that helps identify her hair style. :)

I wondered if your screenname had anything to do with Native American heritage. Cherokee here. http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l226/NorthernXposure/emoticons/cheers.gif

Those are some cool pics, too. Now I wanna check out the album my great aunt gave to me a few years ago... what a great idea!

Nr. 2 is a Gibson Pompadour http://intimelyfashion.com/hair/gibson2.htm

and Nr. 1 is this I think: http://intimelyfashion.com/hair/edward1.html

Perfectly fits the timeframe too.. :)

I agree that the second one looks like a Gibson Girl style.

Cool pics! I like the hairstyle in the first photo. It's one I'd actually wear. I've never seen photos of my great great grandparents at all and only have seen my great grandparents photos on my mom's side. That's so neat that you have those pictures!

Can't help you on the styles, but I love looking at old photos as well.:) I love the pic with your Great-Great Grandmother fishing, it's amazing to see what things looked like back in that era.

My friend has an almost identical hat. I sometimes wear it around her apartment for no reason.

ETA: I pressed "post" before finishing my thought. :p Thank you for sharing those! They were wonderful.

Wonderful pictures, they make me want to check old pics of my ancestors for pretty hairdos.

I´m almost certain that the first picture shows the nautilus aka inside out bun. The old version from the old board. Mine looks exactly like that from the right angle. Minus I don´t wear it over my ears :ponder: should try that, too.

Second one is a loose Gibson style front, with the bun high on top of the head under the ginormous hat. Like this picture of Selma Lagerlöf (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/11/Selma_Lagerl%C3%B6f.jpg) shows for example. That´s why the hats needed to be so big :p to fit all the hair under it.

They're both variations on Gibson updos...your great great grandmother must have been a fashionable woman! :) It was extremely popular right then.

Thank you everyone for the compliments. :) And help identifying the updos. I'm very anxious to see what the other 300 pics on the cd will be when my aunt gets finished with them. When she first sent me the pics I couldn't stop staring at them. I was in awe at how beautiful they were, and how lovely their clothes were. My great grandmother was said to have had major foot problems when she was older, because she wore the tight little Victorian boots all the time. My grandmother therefore never wore tight shoes and had gorgeous feet even in her 80's. No bunions, hammertoes, callouses...nothing! I always thought my grandma had pretty feet. :)

Your very welcome!

My great Grandmother was said to have been the nicest lady you could have met, and very very close to God. She was also a lady, (I have many pics with her dressed up looking cute wearing gloves!) and never cussed. If she said "S*it" you knew she was mad. lol :) I should think of her as inspiration to turn my potty mouth around. :)

Terrific pictures! I'm surprised that anybody could make a guess about the hairstyles because I feel that I can't see them well enough to speculate.

What lovely photographs! It's hard to see how the updo may have been done, but I adore that hat.

Wow, that's awesome to have photos of ancestors who loved long hair as well. I wish I had more photos of my family. A big fire at my grandma's in 1988 had a lot to do with that. If anyone had long hair in my past, it would have been on her side. Hers was really long, and so was her sister's. :(

I love looking at old-fashioned hairstyles. Thanks for sharing! :flower:

BlackfootHair, I posted this in a thread called hairdressing silent movie (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=32440). It looks near to identical to the style in your first pic. With directions, too! http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=8524

I think your great great grandma looks very native american, not just slightly! Her nose, ears, chin, cheeks.
Beautiful photos!
