Hey everyone, help is very much needed. So here's my problem:
My natural color is brown. I went blonde about 3months ago then my roots were growing and I grew tired of the blonde and me being impatience didn't go to a salon to get it dyed a darker color. I bought Garniers 100% deep brown and colored it myself but then people at work pointed out the green tints in my hair (I forgot if you go from a blonde to a dark brunette it gives off a green tint) then someone told me to use a ash brown which I think made the green show more. Now I was thinking to use COLOR Oops. However as I'm reading the box it says that it will take out the darker shade not the ligt shade. So here are a couple of questions:
Does this mean that it will NOT take out the blonde that was there before I dyed it brown?
And I have long hair down to the middle of my back. Would I need 1 application bottle or 2?
Thanks! Any help from anyone who used Color Oops is greatly appreciated!

What color oops does is remove the chemical bonds of the hair COLOR from your hair strands. Once the color is removed, you are left with fairly ORANGE hair, because every box dye uses ammonia and peroxide to bleach your hair prior to depositing it's color.
So you can effectively remove the coloring from your hair, but if you had.....say, natural brown hair, you won't get that back. You'll have faded, lightened orangish hair. From there, you can then use a dye to achieve a natural color you're looking for.
Hope that makes sense. And you may need 2 bottles. It works very quickly, warms up and you don't let it sit for very long (I think the max is 10 mins).

Well I want my hair to be brown but I want to get rid of the green tint. That's why I wanted to use the color oops but if its going to giive me a orangy color I would have to dye it a brown again which wouldn't it give me a green tint again? And defeat the purpose of me doing the color oops? I don't know I'm so lost in what to do. I've also googled that to get rid of green tint is to dye it a red because its a warm color then if I want a brown color I'd have to dye it again 2 wks later. Oooh boy so confused! Please help what do you think will be better?

I'm bad with the color wheel stuff....hopefully someone else can chime in. I would suggest you use just a neutral tone (not a warm or cool) to dye your hair. It's not a STRONG orange, it's simply your hair that has been stripped of a bit of color. I've not had any issue with green tinges after coloring my hair with browns...and I've used henna after color oops (even more orange). I've used warm, neutral, and cool tones, so I'm not much help in that area.
But to give you an idea of what to expect, here is my hair before color oops:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/astrauser/CIMG0954.jpg
And right after:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/astrauser/814.07afterremovingcoloranddyeing.jpg
You can see it looks just like my horribly faded highlights....which were basically just areas of hair stripped of color.

You need red to counter the green. ;)
You can use the color wheel (http://www.sewanee.edu/chem/chem&art/Detail_Pages/ColorProjects_2004/Denman%20/colorwheel.gif) to counter an unwanted shade. Look at the green color on the wheel. Directly across is the red. Once you add the red, it makes the green go poof. :D
ETA that I don't know much about color oops <never used it personally>. I do know that if you want to go a lighter color you should use it but if you're going darker as in deposit only, you don't have to use it, just use the color. I'll forewarn you though since you were blonde at one time, your color will fade faster. It's probly another reason why your hair sucked up the green base color so fast in the brown. Just get something with red in it! :D

Well that person was exactly wrong and unhelpful. Ash means no red/warm tones, and if you have greenish tones, you definitely don't want MORE ash in your hair - quite the opposite!!! My mom has such ash blonde hair with no red at all that her natural color is pretty much dark olive green!

I know there is something at Sallys (a rinse?) that is a color corrector that removes unwanted green tones... I wish I could remember what it was called!!!! I don't think you had to use developer with it, or if you did it could be a very gentle one..... check that before you more dye/ bleach (and damage)...

Only use the color oops if you need to go lighter. Otherwise, just throw a reddish brown semi permanent over it, avoiding your virgin roots.

Thanks everyone, I have no idea how to know what's warm, cool and neutral. But I guess I should go w/ a reddish color then wait two wks and dye it brown again. Does me buying a drug store box brand like auburn make a difference? Because I have no clue how to do a mix of the wella and developers .

Warm, cool, or neutral is usually on the box somewhere or so I've observed (I don't use dye). Ash means cool. Reddish or golden means warm.

You just need a warm toner to counteract the green. You could try a purple shimmer-lights shampoo or one of the John Freida brunette or redhead toning glazes. You don't need to use the color oops. Or as someone said, pick a golden brown semi-permanent dye - you can mix it with conditioner and let it sit on your hair @ 10 minutes till the green tones fade and then rinse out.

Before you get too excited throwing more color on your head, please check out one of the chelating treatments such as Malibu 2000. This is the gentlest way, in my experience, of removing conventional chemical color, because often times the color molecules get attached to mineral buildup in the hair. If you chelate out the minerals, out comes the color molecule. Here's a link to the product: http://www.amazon.com/Malibu-2000-Crystal-Treatment-Packet/dp/B000ROFTMI
I think it smells like dog drool, but it won't thrash your hair as badly as some of the color fix type stuff. Hugs :)

you need to remove all the color in your hair.
get a Filler (basically a demi permanent dye mix with a ration of 2 parts developer : 1 part color. develop for half of the full developer time.) and then apply your brown dye
when this is done you will have amazing brown hair.
i'd also suggest finding a friend who can get you Wella Color Touch (http://killerstrands.myshopify.com/products/wella-color-touch-demi-permanent-color) (to use as your filler) and Koleston Perfect (http://killerstrands.myshopify.com/products/wella-koleston-perfect-permanent-color) (as your permanent brown), since in my opinion box dye's don't cut it. these dye's will be very gentle on your hair, and make sure you get the companioning developers since they have the most lipids in them to keep your hair healthy and conditioned.

The girls at Sally's will help you choose a color and explain how to mix it. It's definitely a better idea than box color because you'll know exactly what tones you're putting in your hair and you'll know you're selecting the gentlest developer.
Whoever mentioned the Malibu is a pretty smart cookie. That could help. I don't know if you can buy it over the counter or not, though, but it's a very small packet and I have tons of them, so if you're willing to PM your address to a total stranger, I wouldn't mind dropping one in the mail for you.

Most beauty supply stores should have it. There's also a similar product called Ion, sold at Sally. I would try this before doing anything else if I were you.

So I found a Sally's where I live, let me tell you it was a mission getting there! However the girl said it would be best to redye my hair with a professional hair dye (wella dark golden brown) w/ 20 developer. The golden brown would take the green tint away because its a cool color. She said that using hair color remover, hair treatments w/ chemicals then redying my hair would be more harmful. Also that I shouldn't go with a Red bc its a strong color especially if I didn't want it as a permanent color. So here's hoping the Wella Dark Golden Brown w/ 20 developer works. She also said to use Henna N Placenta for extremely damaged hair (for a month a so to repair whatever damage past colorinh has done). I will try everything on Thursday as I'm waiting for another week to pass since my dye in a box experiment went wrong!

The employee at Sally's is probably not a stylist. (Well, I'm not either but I've made lots of mistakes and lived to tell about them.) This may be one for a professional to handle, someone who specializes in "color corrections." Since your hair is already processed underneath the green hued color, adding another dose of 20 volume peroxide could add insult to injury.
Perhaps the best thing may be to wait two weeks, use a clarifying shampoo in the meantime, and see how much of those green pigments fall out of the hair on their own.
A Snowymoon Moisture Treatment might also be a gentler way to lighten hair, if you don't microwave the honey as the recipe provides. (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=10495) You might also want to consult the peroxide damage thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=10495). And, you might be interested in learning more in depth about how honey can lighten hair (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=61); it has mild peroxide in it and is probably less damaging than the 20 volume developer. Good luck! :)

woah, woah your gonna end up with some very mixed results if you dye right over the existing color. because ever color in your hair & the color of your actually hair will determine your outcome
if i were you i'd go on ebay type in "Vanish Color Remover" or just simply "Vanish" and get it ($20) use it to take out your color. then use the Wella you got. (by the way what line of wella is it Koleston Perfect, Color Touch, Color Charm etc...?)
its way better to correct the problem than cover it up. if you use vanish which i highly recommend you do, you can just put a demi permanent over it as well. depending on the color of your after the dye has been removed i'd would also suggest a filler to give warmth back to your hair. otherwise you'll end up with the same green again. if your hair is more in the blonder range i would say you need a filler , a nice 7RG and process for half the time on the box, then dye with desired brown.
im also a professional in training - so i've been taught well.

Color charm is a demi. It's a deposit only hair coloring. A filler helps fill in the gaps in the hair strand after it's been colored/damaged.

a filler is a demi permanent color. and the term filler is used to mean your filling the warmth back into your hair.
semi permanent is deposit only, not mixed with any developer and washes out in 8-10 shampoos.
demi permanent last 20-28 shampoo's and needs to be mixed with a low volume developer.
permanent must be mixed with a 20 Vol developer or higher.
also i highly suggest picking up some In-Depth (a PH balanced finishing conditioner)
if you like i'd be more than happy to help.

A little honey might just take the edge of the green out, then you may not have to do a third color application to get you back to where you started. Probably not advisable to pick out your final (wella semipermanent or similar) color until you see how the mistake color fades out on its own or comes out with honey. Honey will be more gentle than any commercial color remover. Your situation may not be bad enough to warrant commercial color removers. If you are not satisfied with the honey, then you can try something stronger. Hang in there, sleep on it, you will get through this. :flower:

I don't know why everyone is making this so incredibly difficult. We're talking about a basic brown here.
Remove the old dye with color oops. You can IMMEDIATELY dye it with whatever color you choose, box dye or something like Wella or Ion (I've used Ion, it's very nice). Ta-da. You have brown hair with no orange or green shades....
A filler will help with fading and can be beneficial, but it isn't required at this juncture if you merely want to correct your color.
This advice is coming from my own personal experience, which I've shared photos of. As you can see by my signature photo, I don't have crazy fried green hair.
I know in our quest to help newbies we tend to over-suggest things which just makes for confusion and difficulty.

Please don't bother with the honey. It won't do what you want to do.
ETA: Honey lightens slowly like a natural peroxide. It may lighten your color, but it's doubtful to have any beneficial effect on the green tone. It's an extra step that is not required for what you are trying to achieve.
I'm going to assume that Vanish is similar. The orange color is your hair, stripped of the dye molecules, and showing the bleaching that was done when you applied the color to begin with. It is inevitable, and is not a product of using Color Oops or any similar product.
I would suggest you purchase 2 bottles with your length.

any color remover will leave your hair organge because we you dye your hair it removes your natural pigment and what you see is whats left of the pigment its like this - http://twitpic.com/fy0f3
and Vanish is much more gentler on your hair than ColorOops as color leaves the hair incredibly over porous (which means your ability to hold color will be lessened) yes i would definitely suggest two bottles - better to have more than enough than not enough

I've successfully "re-toned" extension hair many times by using the conditioner, 10. vol peroxide and well charm color. Extension hair has already been double/triple processed so a dye remover would damage it even more - I use conditioner, peroxide and an 8G, golden blonde dye and leave it on the hair for 5-7 minutes tops and it takes the green right out.
Since you bought 20 vol. peroxide, you can just mix 2 oz. 20 Vol. with 2 oz. conditioner to end up with 4 oz. diluted peroxide, then just add 4 oz of the Golden Brown Wella Charm and leave it on your hair for 10 minutes, remove and see if the green is gone, if not, put back on hair for another 10 minutes. I also agree that you should wait about a week if you are going to do the redye without color remover - wash your hair every day with a clarifying shampoo and then condition it really well - in one week, a lot of the box dye will have faded.

A long while back, when I had a fiasco with going blond, I decided to dye my hair a dark(ashy) brown in the end, and got a color with olive green tones like the board OP described. I dyed over that with a warm(reddish brown) toned color and voila, no green. I didn't have to strip, bleach, remove, lighten, or tone anything, I didn't have to perform some complex medieval ritual and pray to the hair color gods, etc. or anything like that. Just sayin'. O_o

you hair should be dry, water will only inhibit the dye. also note if you're dying right after color oops you need to pick up a 'neutral protein filler' (this is easily found, usually at Sally's) and process for half of the suggest time (to make sure you don't go to dark)

so follow instructions to the T. exactly.
if at all possible wait 1-2 day between color oops and the dye.

its probably because people who work in salons try and keep everything they do and use a secret - which ridiculous. they most likely use pre-treatment packs from Malibu2000 & Performance Plus to as protein fillers.
while you at Sally's see if you can grab Wella In-Depth as your conditioner for after processing. stuff works wonders, and makes your hair very shiny
