View Full Version : Van Der Graaf

Today, for the first time ever with long hair, I actually went and did the "hair thing" on a Van Der Graaf generator. My hair is up, with a metal pin, so the extreme static effects were not such a big deal, and I'm having a floofy day anyway.

The weather is very dry, my hair is very fine, and it looked incredible. (Photo pending). Consider, my hair is at waist length, and is rather thick. It made a huge hair-cloud around me, all sticking out at 90 degrees to my head -- so I could easily see the front bits pointing out and upward.

Then people started touching it. When you touch it, you discharge it. So, I was feeling my hair zapping my scalp, and the hair itself falling down.

I also managed to get a decent coronal discharge (http://weatherscapes.com/Photos/w-085-25.jpg) around my fingertips, and around the points of my hairpin.

Photo to give you an idea (http://www.vicphysics.org/documents/teachers/Hopkins/Pictures/Van%20Der%20Graaf.jpg), not of me, to tide you over until I get mine.

It was a fair bit like the little girl's hair, really, but I don't have a fringe, and I had some bits that went up without separating.

Pic, singular, unfortunately. I might get more on Saturday.

I'm waiting for the guy who took it to email it to me.

I'm looking forward to seeing this! Did the hair-zapping hurt at all?

No, it just felt really weird!

Then again, it doesn't particularly bother me to zap people and be zapped when I do that, so...

Waiting for pics here too. :drama:

Yeah, here too.

Come on, J! *Laughs*

I was always picked to do that in physics classes in high school since I had the longest hair (it was a bit longer then than now, blame the over-eager trim my mum gave me :p), but the results were never spectacular since my hair is thick and heavy, so I couldn't get all of it to stand up, unfortunately. But Van Der Graaf generators are awesome :D

I wonder if one of those would affect gelled hair

I can't wait to see a pic! That would be fun to get to do... Of course, I'd go all evil like, and start zapping anybody that came close enough.... mwahaha.

I love those things xD We had a small one in my science class, but there's a BIG one at the Ontario Science Centre. xD I always loved to see people go up and they go all POOF and... yeah xD It was awesome.

I bet yours looked wicked cool =3

lol! I wanna play with one! I wonder what classic-length hair would look like... I'd probably have to have someone save me!

Edit: One of these days, for a meet, someone should have a 'field trip' to a place with one of those things, and take the hair picture that way!

Dangit! Whyinell doesn't the Exploratorium have one of those! Well...why don't they have a big one...they have a little one.

Wanna try!

I can't wait for pics either. We just Have to plan an outing around one of those! :cheese::cheese::cheese:

:) I did that on a small one about ten inches+ layers back. it wasn't very dramatic... The first layer got poofy, but the rest didn't do much of anything...

Do the big ones give a better charge? I want to try it!!!

Dang! I'd be tempted to wash with shampoo if I had a chance at a big one...as it is now, my hair is pretty static free.

Three are two big things that make a difference: the weather (it needs to be a fairly dry day to get good results) and how the lab tech has cleaned the charging belt. Relatively little ones (ours is just a tabletop lecture demonstration one) work beautifully well.

I got a dry day, and a perfectly-cleaned charging belt (N, the lab demo tech is a genius!) and it was really good.

Whoa! That woman's hair reminds me of a peacocks tail! Wouldn't it be neat to do some kind of hair painting beforehand (although that might affect the level of static depending on what's used)?

I got to try this a long time ago when my hair was only APL! I reallly want to do it again now.

Man, I love those machines. We did a demo with one in my high school physics class a few years ago, but my hair was pretty short back then, so it wouldn't have been very cool had I been picked. Even now, my hair is only below apl, so it wouldn't be anything special :(

There was one sitting in the corner of my physics class last year, and we were always bugging my teacher to let us play with it, but he never did. So my classic length hair was not destined for higher things :( That would have rocked.

I have done this at my local Science Museum (OMSI) and I was the force behind a lot of laughter since my hair went up!

Those things are so cool! I tried one when I was twelve and had BSL hair. My hair poofed, but the other kids in my class were more amazed by the fact that there was sparks coming from my steel-toe boots. I was then asked to not touch the machine again. :D

You have nearly the same results as a girl in my grade 9 science class, only her hair was much shorter. =P That's wicked!
