Twice I've done this actually, once I had the stupid Idea to put my cigarette behind my ear while I was busy doing something or other.. but forgot it was lit  Another time someone offered me a light and i leaned forward and my hair fell straight into the flame :( It was a few seconds before I actually noticed...

Fire is bad for hair, I've learned that much lol :p

WoW! I don't think I've ever done that! :D I have burnt my hair on windy days smoking outside, in the car or trying to feed a yowling hungry cat on a smoke break!

Definately not good when you hear the sizzle and smell the hair.

One time, my brother filled a zippo with gasoline. Yeah, NOT GOOD! :agape: *WOOF*

I once burned my hair when firing an electric ceramic kiln. The kiln has peep holes with peep hole plugs that you can take out to check on the progress. The plug is cool enough to hold on the end you're supposed to grip, but the other end is 1000 degrees or so, depending on the stage of the fire cycle. I pulled out a plug, and leaned in to peer through the hole, accidentally letting some loose hair come in contact with the hot end of the plug I was holding. Sizzling sound and burnt hair smell. Oops.

I haven't burned my hair off by accident just yet *knock on wood*, but this thread has just reminded me that I really should always tie my hair back or put it up whenever I'm cooking over the stove! On several occasions I simply just start the flame on without even thinking about protecting my ends..........and I oil my hair like once a week :agape:..........wow I need to not press my luck everytime I'm cooking! :poot:

I have singed my arm hair with the oven a number of times and I have burned some individual sheds a number of times on purpose.

I rarely have my hair down...so that reduces the risk of it catching on fire.

And I've singed my hair with cigarettes many times...fortunately it's usually only a little piece that got blown onto it while smoking outside. I've never actually set myself on fire...yet.

I set my hair on fire in a bar once. I think it was leaning over the lighter trying to light my cigarette that did it. Some guy threw his coat over my head to put it out. Another reason that I'm glad that I quit smoking!

I have. I was at an after-show party for my favorite musician and we traded lighters. I was so happy to have something from him! Some time later I used his lighter for the first time to light a cigarette, and it turned out he'd had it set to "flamethrower" mode. The flames caught the tips of my bangs and filled the room with a terrible smell.

After that, I always make sure to light the lighter AWAY from my head and then bring it close once I've seen the strength of the flames.

I've singed mine by leaning over the oven burners or open oven door and not realizing my long hair was touching the hot bits!

Also, two Halloweens ago my hair caught slightly on fire. I was dressed as a witch and handing out treats. I had the usual black dress, broom, cauldron, and a long black feather boa. The boa caught on fire from one of the candles I was burning for effect and before I knew it I smelled a nasty burning and looked back and saw that the boa was on fire! It got a small bit of my hair but nothing serious, thankfully.

Oh yes, more than once. The last time I gave myself a set of unplanned bangs was right after a Rammstein concert, when we came out of the venue and I was dying for a cigarette so I lit up as soon as I stepped outside. It was very windy and I had trimmed the wick of my Zippo just before the concert, but left it too long (=bigger flame). So a rather big portion of my hair went up in flames. My friend cocked her head to one side and commented that obviously I should no longer attend concerts that incorporate such huge amounts of pyrotechnics and live fire, because it affects me in ways it probably shouldn't. :D

OMG!!! What was he thinking?!

See what would happen.

They go really well on hexane, actually. You have to fiddle the wick a bit to get it happy, but yeah. Solvent grade hexane is really nice.

I have a zippo for doing lab demo stuff. Even when it's empty, you can use the flint alone to light bunsen burners, etc. I consider it far safer and more convenient than matches.

As for the original topic, no, never.

I have caught my hair on fire as opposed to singed twice. Once as a child in front of a John Deer heater, the kind that didn't have a glass in front of the flame. I had butt length hair as a child and a frilly nylon dress. The hair flamed, but fortunately the dress only melted instead of flaming.
The other time was about a year ago, I bent over to light a heater and my hair fell back over my shoulder and it went poof!!!! Sizzle pop!!! OMG stinky!
I lost a piece that was about a foot long but fortunately it was only about two inches wide of a piece.

So now when I light something I make sure that my hair is fastened up securely.:o

I have singed my hair on my cigarette before, maybe once or twice, and each time vowing to be more careful.

My brother-in-law actually singed off one full eyebrow trying to copy my mom by lighting his smoke on the gas burner!

I had a FRIEND of mine light my hair on fire... And she did it kinda on purpose too... (i say kinda because she obviously didn't think it through before she did it, and didn't do it maliciously) we were at church of all places... she took her lighter and held it up to my hair - i watched it go up the small section of hair before i jumped and patted it out!!!

On a related note, I had a candle burning in my room when I was maybe 13 and I had the bright idea to see how a kleenex would burn.... the answer ...... POOOOOOOF!!!!! :flamed: I burned a small hole in my carpet and vowed never to play with fire again!

*raises hand*

I was cleaning off DH's desk. I had lit a scented candle to improve the smell of his desk area, heavily laden with cigarette / cigar smells. So I had my hair up in simple double braids, one on each side. Had candle on main part of desk while cleaning and putting things away. Well I reached up to put something in the shelf space above where the monitor is. I smell something burning, look down and one of my braids had got dead into the candle. Managed to get about 2 inches real good.

I also have caught my hair in the car door, in the window while rolling up, kids coats (velcro) and am constantly pinned under DH's body at night.

One of these days I"m going to learn to keep may hair up better huh?

This happened once to a friend, but never to me.

But this reminds me of a time when a couple of my friends and I lit my other friend's leg hair on fire.

Just for kicks, not by accident :D

It was way funny, because it was in class so we smelled the burned hair soon enough and tried to cover it by spraying Axe all around us.

It worked but the teacher said "David, no matter how much of that stuff you spray, you won't get girls all over you like the commercials imply"

Ah, high school, good times, good times.

Nope, I haven't caught the hair on my head on fire before, but I've set individual sheds on fire just to watch them shrivel and disintegrate, and to marvel at what on earth would make it smell that way.

Oh, and my brother used to burn off the hair on his legs on purpose, to show off.

Oh, and I saw a video once of a way of "shaving" a man's face in Turkey (I think :ponder:) that used a small flame to singe the hair off. I think it was a barber shop that was demonstrating. I always wondered if it was bravado that made the man show no pain or wincing, or if it really didn't hurt at all. It didn't seem to leave burn marks, so I guess maybe it didn't hurt.

ALMOST. Oh god, almost. I don't smoke though.

I had an oil burner, right, with some honeysuckle EO in the top bit and a candle in the bottom bit, and my lighter nearby.

I heard this hissing sound... my sister (it was when I was living with my dad and sister some time ago) alerted me to it, and I went up to look and see what was hissing... it turns out the liquid inside the lighter was BOILING! and it caught on fire, and went FWOOOOSH, big, you know, fire! I backed up very quickly and called for Dad, who put the fire out.

I lucked out and did not singe anything, but I swear I nearly had a heart attack!

Good thing i dont smoke, but if it would happen any other way im sure i would hate myself for days. Thinking about another person doing that to me, if by accident or not, im afraid that would piss me off to the very core, im sure i couldnt speak to them normally for quite a while.

I've never done worse than singe a few strands, but a girl I went to high school with lit her bangs/fringe on fire in the bathroom (lighting a cigarette, which was not allowed) and had to go to the hospital (like, they sent her in an ambulance) because she burned her face and scalp. This was in the early 1990s, so everyone was wearing the poofy/curly bangs/fringe with six tons of hairspray in it, and her hair went up like *that.*

personally, no. But just about every year it seems someone gets singed during the midnight service, one of the unwritten traditions that goes with being Orthodox is waiting for that particular smell to waft your way. Around now we always bring up the story of my great aunt who famously caught fire, scary part was she ddnt even know it right away. Personally i was glad to be in the choir box this year... less to be cautious about. lol.

A looong time ago when I was still smoking I found out that trying to grow out your bangs at the same time did not go together too well. Long story short: I never did manage to grow my bangs out and very often there was a distinct smell of burnt hair around when I lit a cigarette. Now I have stoped smoking I guess now would be the ideal time to try and try again to get my bangs to 'play' with the rest of my hair ;)

Yep, in the 8th grade. My school couldn't afford nice bunson burners, so we had to use old-style alcohol burners. My friend picked it up and somehow accidentally caught the tiniest bit of my hair in the flame, woosh! I had a really bad haircut at the time though, so I just trimmed the chunk to chin length (with the rest of my "layer"). A hairdresser trimmed my BSL hair and cut the front (from my ears forward) to my chin, basically a super grown-out mullet. It wasn't that big a deal at the time, but if it happened now I would be totally freaked.

Then there was 11th grade chemistry class with a teacher that loved to play with fire. Oh, that was a nightmare for a pyrophobe! He did the burning hand trick (fill wet palm with methane gas bubbles, light it on fire), "The Birthday Candle" (burning hydrogen gas in a Pringles can, the boom from the explosion was so strong it shook two classrooms), and he loved putting chunks of sodium into water. The NA in H2O is the one that almost set my hair on fire, along with the ceiling, and the stack of quizzes he had just graded (yep, failed it!). I hated chemistry....

Every now and then single strands of hair get in the way of my cigarette/lighter, if it's windy outside. I try to always have my hair up when I'm smoking but sometimes I forget.

I once managed to burn a bit of my eyelashes. I had been tinkering with the lighter so that the fire got really big and I forgot about it. Then I went out for a cigarette, tilted my head and lighted it. It took 2 weeks for my eyelashes to go back to normal.

Yes! I almost started my hair on fire today burning leaves in the garden. My LHC voice told me to get away from the fire! Thanks LHC.

I very nearly did once. I was leaning over a candle to blow it out, and I got a bit of my braid tassel too close to the flame. Not much hair was lost, but YE GODS THE SMELL.

I've singed the ends while cooking before. Not too nice. Luckily only the very ends were damaged. They turned a very strange brown color and became rather brittle. I went to the hairdresser after that and had the damage cut out. :P
