my second wig came today. :cheese: so i can achieve the best of both worlds.
pegs thread a while back which did rather well to confuse people, and got me thinking. i was was just the case of finding the right style for me.

no way ever could i achieve this with real hair, and saves horrid styling :p
http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu32/rachelheales/other/wigshort.jpghttp://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu32/rachelheales/other/wigback.jpg

and my other wig which i got couple years back-

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu32/rachelheales/other/wiggy-1.jpg
(sadly had to cut it down because the weight of it made it fall off my head often :( )

and heres me with my clip in hair extensions-

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu32/rachelheales/Photo68-1.jpg

why not? saves doing crazy , regrettable things to your own hair.

what have you guys got hidden away ?
pictures are a must have..........

I bought a short, straight, glossy dark brown wig a few months ago, but it won't stay on my giant head. It's adjustable, but even at the largest size it's not stable and I wouldn't feel confident leaving the house in the thing. I was so disappointed.

Here I am with wearing my Jessica Simpson 21" Human Hair hairpiece - a real must for me as a belly dancer since I had to have my hair chopped.
http://www.nafisehbellydance.co.uk/assets/images/n_ext.jpg
I loved it when I first bought it, but it gets so tangled at the nape, no matter how much I deep condition it. I end up having to rope braid it until I need to dance, then re-braid it afterward.

Not sure if it's because I used a non-ammonia semi-permanent hair colour as I bought the wrong shade, but I'm not sure I'd buy another JS hairpiece.

Only another 10 inches or so till I don't need it anymore (grow hair grow!)

I'm very curious about trying wigs out. Especially seeing pictures like this where, like you said, it can save you from doing something regrettable to your real hair.
I just don't know when I'd wear it. It would feel weird wearing a wig to school, especially if it was an unnatural colour (like purple).

Fencai, That blond wig is cool!

I have a blonde bob and a green bob, as well as my black one. I also have a long red fall that is attached to a clip.... I like having fun with my hair.

My mom was smart she let me buy wigs to play with my hair so there were fewer hair disasters than there could have been. We also used small color clips and manic panic to have fun....

They sell caps that go on the head over your natural hair that the wig can be clipped to so that it won't fall off, even in strong wind. A woman who lost her hair to alopecia showed me this one time.

So, a better pic of the wig above.

I miss wigs!:)
I used to wear them when I danced all the time; I had the purple jaw length bob, a long brown layered that I took back after a few weeks to have cut to a shoulder length, a gorgeous red that made me realize my skin doesn't look good with red hair- which was a bummer, a sandy blonde one that was about apl.
I have no pics of ANY of them.:(
I got rid of them after I got pretty dedicated to wearing braided extensions, since they wouldn't fir under the wigs, ha ha! I stopped doing the braids a few years back because of the arthritis and carpal tunnel I deal with. Braiding made my hands weak, weak WEAK and throbby painful for days.
I have a pic of the braids-
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/LaMermaid/golddress-1.jpg
I decided I will probably braid my hair for our trip to Aruba in March because of the humidity there after trying unsuccessfully to combat humidity in Puerto Rico, Maui and Cancun.

For a very long time I wanted to get more than one, but now I’m afraid I won’t even be able to use the one anymore. I simply can’t pile my real hair under it without getting a seriously freaky big skull

Thanks! haha I really miss those extensions, but I have decided I'm not going to be getting them anymore because it breaks my hair. Sooo I'll just be patient for my hair to grow to that length!!

Wow, I have been away for so long! I have synthetic dreadlock extensions that I made at home, myself. The first picture is of me with them up a couple of days ago. Sorry I look so gross, but I'm getting over a cold and sinus infection. The second picture is me on Christmas, so you can see the length (they are all about 25 inches, give or take a few), and the third is a close up on New Year's eve (sorry it's so grainy) so you can see the size and color variations. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

StarryNight - they look so good! How long is your natural hair?

StarryNight
January 11th, 2013, 05:37 AM
joflakes - Thank you! My natural hair is very short right now. I spent most of last year experimenting with it with plans to cut it all off once I was done, and when I put my extensions in I think the longest layers were six inches or so? Before I cut it all I was nearly to tailbone. I am so much happier with dreadlocks, to be honest. I loved my hair when it was long and loose, but it is really no maintenance now at all. I am currently making plans to let my hair get long enough to have natural dreadlocks and install wool roving extensions sometime later this year. :)

I LOVE love love the dreads! I have always wanted them, myself. Or at least one or two to liven up my updos.

How did you go about making them?

I am so happy to see this thread as I thought it would be something unheard of on a long forum. I must confess I have cheated a good deal of times because I can never seem to get my hair to the extreme lengths others can and I did purchase some really nice clip on hair pieces, one is really long and looks beautiful and natural. I find wigs too warm so have never purchased them. I can't uploard photos on here to show you. But you all look gorgeous with your various styles, whether natural or not :)

I have a bunch of wigs--a blonde, three redhead, a Marilyn Monroe white, a hot pink. I wear them for costume parties. I also have what is called a half-wig--that is, you put it on the back of your hair and brush the front of your real hair over it so that it looks extra realistic. My sister in law bought that one for herself and it didn't match her hair so she gave it to me. I wear that one very occasionally when my own hair is wet and I really have to go out and its summer so I can't wear a hat. But I don't much like it. I like the wigs that look very different from my real hair because I like dress up and pretend sometimes. I don't like them if I have to keep explaining over and over that it's not me.
I have known of people who grew their real hair long by wearing a wig everyday and taking care of their hair under it and giving it a rest from being styled.
I would never wear extensions or hair weaves. I think they are heck on your hair. I know a lot of women with broken off hair or baldness because of them. One of my sisters-in-law has lost her hairline, I believe permanently, all the way back to her ears from years of hair extension wearing, it looks dreadful. A wig, you braid up your hair or twist it up with oil or conditioner in it, put on a wig cap or cut off stocking cap, I also put on a satin sleep cap and then I put on the wig, my hair is protected. And then the wig comes off after the party or whatever. But weaves are sewn or glued into your hair and then there's the question of getting the stitches or glue OUT without destroying it. and extensions are heavy and drag your hair off. And then there is what I call the 'cubic zirconia effect'. I have know girls who got cubic zirconia engagement rings because they couldn't afford a real diamond ring yet, which is fine--but then when they could afford a diamond, they found they didn't like the ones they could afford because they were neither as big or as sparkly as the CZ. I would hate for it to happen that I got used to how hair that wasn't mine looked and then was dissatisfied with my real hair because it doesn't have that Victoria's Secret model look that most wigs have--fake perfection.

shutterpillar - thank you! ^.^ Making them is very simple, and cheap, but time consuming if you make as many as I did, lol. I use kanekalon, which is a specific type of synthetic hair sold in most beauty supply stores for about 1.50 - 2.50 per bag. I usually get eight to ten dreadlocks out of one bag of hair, and I have about 80 on my head, but could have fit 100 easily because I have a lot of hair. I take a section of hair (it comes in a braid and I undo the braid), fold it in half and loop the end around the hook of a plastic hangar. I then use a tiny elastic to make a loop at the end of the hair wrapped around the hangar hook. This I leave in to make the next step easier, but you don't have to, although it helps if you're learning. Then I backcomb like crazy, usually until the dreadlock reaches a thickness I like and is a little stiff when held out sideways. I use a pet brush to back comb because I find it faster than a comb, but people use all kinds of things, it's personal preference. When I have a stack of these rough looking dreadies I take them to my pot of boiling water on the stove, twist them until I like the way they look, and (being careful not to burn myself!) dip them into the water, which causes them to seal permanently. This is why I use kanekalon. Then I lay them on a towel to dry for 10 minutes or so and they are ready to braid in! Sorry if any of that was unclear. You can find many videos on youtube that show how to make and install both single and double ended dreadlocks (mine are single).

I love, love, love wigs. I have a wig that sits at about classic length on me. I'm at the gym right now, so I can't post any pictures of it, but I'll take one as soon as I get home.

shutterpillar - Ah, good! If you decided to make some please post pictures! Also, the synthetic hair I use literally comes in any color you could think of, almost, so people make some really beautiful combinations.

I really want fake dreads now! how easy are they to remove and how long do they last? id be scared of the braids getting matted up. I don't think my work would be very happy about me getting dreads though :/

Why would you want to cover up that hair, leslissocool?

It's not much about covering the hair up, but I get bored with my hair sometimes. I like crazy colors, but I like healthy long hair... I've been thinking of getting wigs for cosplay in pink or like this:

I think that would look good on me. And if it doesn't, well, it comes off :D

Sorry this has taken me so long to reply! Ive been mia for a while. To remove I just snip the elastic band holding the braid together and they slide out with a little unwinding. I keep them in from 2-3 months at a time, depending on how much of a change I want and how much they need maintenance. They don't get matted, as they are synthetic, but you do have to separate them every so often, I usually do it once a week, just because they are so long and I have decorations in them. Usually work places dont have a problem as long as you keep them looking neat and keep the rest of your look clean and simple. You could always do it and see how they react. If is unfavorable you can take them out in minutes, although I would have a hat handy. When I take mine out I look like I stuck my finger in a socket, lol. Please keep us posted if you decide to try!

I just got a fake bun, and I love it! I think it will be great for days when I heavily oil the ends of my hair. I can cover them up with my fake bun. It matches pretty well. It was made for me by puppycatmeow on etsy.

I've never bought a wig but I did buy a pony tail with hair. I did this in 08 after my shag cut.
