Hi, I have a question regarding Mason Pearson combs for anyone who has one. :)

Recently I bought the Detangling comb from http://www.adiscountbeauty.com/page520.html and when I received it the surface was all scratched up. The scratches weren't deep at all, in fact you couldn't even feel them, but I thought these combs should have a smooth surface (glassy even?).

How does yours look (at least when you first got it).

For comparison (the images are big, but it's easier to see the scratches the way):

Thanks :)

I have the one without the handle, it came without any scratches and still does not have any after a few years of use. It seems like you got a bad one and should contact the seller to ask about gerring it replaced.

Yeah, I kind of figured. When I first got it I was really confused  and even thought that maybe I'm wrong.

In any case, thank you for your help :)

That stinks! It looks used or it was sitting out in a pile of them or something.

Honestly, it looks like they sold you a used one.

When I first got mine it was all glassy and smooth. Now after about two years, it looks like yours. I don't think it hurts my hair at all, but still. You paid for something, you should get it.

Hi, thanks for the replies. :)

On another note, has anyone bought their MP combs from that site? I'm not sure if I want to return it and get it from somewhere else or ask for an exchange.

Yeah, it looks like their "sale" price means you're actually getting a used product. Jerks.

I bought both of my MP combs from Whatshebuys.com (http://www.whatshebuys.com/for-her-hair---scalp-hair-brushes.html). They came in perfect condition. I was about to say that they are a bit more expensive there, but then I checked the link and the prices have gone up since I ordered mine two years ago. So now they're a lot more expensive. Free shipping, though.

Yeah, I think I'll just return it and get it somewhere else. :\

My combs (six of them in various shapes) have all been smooth and lying safely tucked away in their wrappings. This comb looks worse than the one I carried around in my purse for years, sorry :(

Hm, it does look scratched up, but depending on how little you paid...you may be better off keeping it. It doesn't seem like those slight scratches are going to change how well it works at all. I think I got mine directly from MP. It did look glossy, but that glossy look doesn't last very long. I haven't used mine much at all and it got those tiny scratches very easily.

I got mine here:

She was a pleasure to deal with and my items came very quickly.

"Im very sorry but that is impossible that is the comb you received from us. All our combs come in a sealed Mason Pearson package directly from England. We take no returns on Combs and brushes so their was no mix-up on what we ship to you. Im sorry but this cannot be our comb and we cannot accept this return."

Grrr.. Angry e-mail incoming! It was brand new out of the package which is why I was so concerned in the first place!

To birthmarkie:

Unfortunately, I've already sent back. And technically, it's the principle of the matter, if I buy something new, I expect to receive it in new condition.

*sigh* :(

I should also probably ask, has anyone ever contacted Mason Pearson through http://www.masonpearson.com/mail.asp? I filled out the form the day I got it but no reply from them yet. :(

To simone_rodrigue:

Yeah, I was thinking of getting a new one from that shop :)

If you bought from the website you listed, you were not buying from Mason Pearson directly. You would have had to have bought from masonpearson.com or a licensed vendor. So contacting Mason Pearson won't help you. You'd have to contact the beauty supply store.

Update: I received a reply from Mason Pearson!

Thank you for your enquiry. Thank you also for your photograph. The marks you have identified on your comb are all part of the manufacturing process and quite normal in the manufacturing of products made from cellulose acetate and yes, they are suppose to be like that. As you rightly point out you can see them but can’t feel them, that is because they are marks within the cellulose acetate not scratches on the surface of the material These marks are visible on all our combs but are more noticeable on the ‘Detangling comb’ model ‘C2’ (the one being held in the photograph) due to it having a larger expanse of flat surface than any of our other combs.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Best wishes,
Mason Pearson Bros Ltd

Well, I feel kind of stupid now and I'm currently in damage control mode. Ahh.

Note to self, be more patient.

That is really interesting, and good information to have. Thanks, and I'm glad things worked out for you!

That is definitely good to know... I may get some soon when funds build up. Too bad about the attitude of the original seller though... what nerve!

Does anyone know if these are sold in stores anywhere? Or do you have to order them?

So, I'm bumping this old thread to update everyone. I finally got the comb (although, I will soon have 2 due to my impatience. Oh well, doesn't hurt to have an extra one) and used it and it's great! :)

Little Lox: I haven't found anywhere locally that sells them (I'm in Canada). Although I assume that some stores in the UK might sell them. In any case, your best bet is probably online :)

Little Lox, I know there are stores in the States where you can buy Mason Pearson brushes/combs, I just couldn't tell you where. I would say your best bet is to try department stores and salons, probably the 'higher end' ones.

Oh I didn't see this thread earlier. I have a few MP combs. They all have tiny scratches like that. The one I use regularly is way more scratched than yours. I bought all of them from UK, sealed in package. I think they're just supposed to be like that. It's just a hard plastic after all.

Hi I recently purchased a MP comb from that site (maybe 2 wks ago) and I received it in perfectly new condition. I'm sorry that they gave you such a hard time. Glad you finally got a new one, MP is awesome. I hope to buy a BBB next.
