What exactly is a mullet?

I see a lot of member who say they cut their hair because they started to have a mullet. Now I searched google and it said it's a kind of "style" that Macgyver used to have. I'm starting to think it has a different meaning here. And now I'm worried I have may have it lol. So what is it?

Short hair often grows out in a much less.. dramatic form of this. Because it started out all about the same length, the bits that are lower on your head (i.e. the back) end up looking longer.

I actually think the "mullet" stage is worth putting up with for the really great layers it grows into a little later on!

Yup I believe that Billy Ray Cyrus was the Mullet King! I think in an interview one time, he said that after he had it cut, he buried it :laugh:! LOL

Thankfully it didn't last long. I did a complete U-turn as soon as possible and went the emo-route the moment my front hair was long enough :D

In Danish, it is called Bundesliga-hår, cause they thought that all German football players and fans had this hairstyle. The French call it, likewise, "coiffure de futballeur allemand". Amazing.

I saw a serious, true, totally 80ies mullet this summer on a rock festival. I nearly died of laughter. In my world, mullet is like this half-mythical thing, we all know what it is, but we don't really see it in the real world.... until we do. What has been seen cannot be unseen :D

Why not? I'm sure I saw a 1970s time traveller the other day... he had the build, the clothes, the hair, the beard, and even the sandy-yellow Holden Torana in as-new condition. Sometimes time travel is the only reasonable explanation!

No, you have definitely no mullet.

I think a mullet is whet happens naturally when growing out short hair. At some point the nape hair will be hanging somewhere around the neck while the hair on top, while being the same length, is still far away from the neck. Voila - Mullet! As soon as the hair on top has passed the nape hairline the mullet look will be gone naturally, resulting in heavily layered hair. To avoid the dreaded mullet altogether, some people will trim only their nape hair until the layer on top has caught up with it.

Btw, in Austria, we call this a Vokuhila (Foe-coo- hee-lah). It's short for "vorne kurz, hinten lang", which literally means front short, back long.

Actually my mullet was almost semi-tolerable because my hair flips up at the ends when it's short so I looked like an anime character. And while this is certainly not my favourite look, it's better than MacGyver hair.

It is true, many German football players did once have this hair...and guys who either used to play or wish they played still seem to sport this 'do. Along with the denim head to toe, big sneakers, etc. Like the mid 80s never left.

I have always wondered about people with mullets and if their friends or family ever take them aside, all concerned, and say 'hey, I gotta tell you, mullets are OUT.' But as my mom always said about old lady helmet hair, some people just find one style at one point in their lives that they like, and stick with it. Scary!

My baby daughter had one for a while, babies can get it if you let their hair grow without cutting it - the hair on the sides of her head just didn't grow as fast as the back. Now she has the neat natural layers thing going on in the back.

I have a little baby relative (he's about 9 months old) whose hair has never been cut and he has a devilock (think The Misfits). It's adorable!

My brother had one for years, he started growing out his hair as a little kid and rocked the mullet until he was about 13 or so. Not so much the Cyrus-mullet, more a 70's shaggy mullet. Classy. Now it's grown out and the front is finally meeting his TBL ends, goodbye mullet!

Where I'm from (Northern Midwest USA) it's known as "Hockey Hair." :-)

I didn't realize it was such an international style. Or that it had such a strong association with sports. In Canada we call it "hockey-hair" as well.

In Dutch it's called a 'matje'. Which is the diminutive form of 'mat' as in doormat, floormat etc. We don't have the word 'mat' as in 'matted hair' so it doesn't carry the connotation that the hair is matted or anything like that... just that it looks in the back as something you could wipe your feet on ;)

ETA: I remember seeing a picture of a Roman statue that had the same hairstyle. So it's not only an international hairstyle, it's actually ancient, too.

I remember reading something about the ancient warriors who would cut the front of their hair short for obvious reasons (better visibility etc) and the back would stay longer. I have no idea if they were romans though - my knowledge base is huge and totally unorganized. But either way it looks like Teh Mullet is so ancient it's basically a part of human nature. How sad. :D

Honestly, some of the 'mullets' that people on here say they have, and some pictures of them don't really look like mullets to me. They look like long-ish for the normal world (sholder for guys) hair with bangs. I only think it's a mullet if the top is shaved or really short. xD;
