Hi there!

TRYING to be good about protective updos. Plus, I like having my hair up. Problem: the bump in the back that most buns and related do's give you makes relaxing on the couch, lying on your back to do crunches, or riding in the car uncomfortable. I braid my hair often, but I'd like to find ways to keep it entirely off my neck AND allow me to do yoga, nap, or lie on the couch with the laptop on my belly, reading LHC forums.

If you want it up up, a ballet bun -- that's a good, high, very flat cinnabun, which incidentally looks very elegant -- might give you less of a "bump" than many other styles. CinnamonCurls' Vortex bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=27288), a many-strand variation, can give a very flat-to-the-head bun.

Is your hair short enough to tuck the braid in?

I have the same problem. I find that twisted 'dos work a lot better in preventing bumps. They also look more flattering on me than buns do. Braids always give me bumps; I save them for 'dirty' days.

Of course nowadays with a baby I have my hair up most of the time so wearing it down and 'bumpy' isn't an issue...

The most comfortable updo I make is a log roll. I secure the log roll with a couple of Wavelength pins. This updo is fast and easy to make while you are walking across the room.

I always wear an updo. As I walk toward the sofa, I take out the hair pins, grab the hair at the base (imaginary ponytail), sort-of pull (or shift) the base of the ponytail up to the top of my head (crown area), make a log roll and insert the pins. Thus the bump is on top of your head, which is good enough for reclining although it is not suitable for the headstand inversion!

When I tried the Amish braids updo described in this thread (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=30688&highlight=amish), I found it very comfortable to sleep on. I just tucked the braid ends in, after weaving them through several times.

I'm no good for advice, if i'm going to lay down and relax on the couch (which rarely happens because my three year old will MAUL ME!) I'll usually do either a really high bun, or a simple braid that I can pull over my shoulder. Course, like I said, this doesn't happen enough to be an issue for me....I wish it did...:P

If you french braid your hair, and then tuck it under in the back, there will still be a bump, but it will be more flat in the back. It won't stick out or get in your way like some other hairstyles. I have a picture in my album.

I just found this picture on the net:

The tighter you do it, the more secure it will be too.
