View Full Version : How do YOU pineapple your hair?

I am interested as my hair is getting longer about perhaps containing the length to help preserve the curl overnight as best I can. Until now I have been just tossing the length over my pillow but as the curl is being pulled out by the length even MORE now I think if I could pineapple it I might save more of it.

Questions. What do you use to tie it off and where? What do you do with the length after that? Do you just let it go over the side of the bed or above the pillow? Do you put any leave-ins in it before? Is there a better way to preserve the curl?

TIA!

Can you (or someone) explain to English-challenged person like me what pineapple one's hair means? If I try to search it in google images (what I usually do to get a visual version of something I don't know, beats any dictionary!), I come up with pictures of pineapple. Is it doing a ponytail right on top of your hair or something?

Yes, that's it- putting your hair in a very high ponytail to sleep. It's supposed to help preserve curl overnight.

Personally I have no luck with it at all; the only thing that helps my wurls stay the night is a sleep cap.

If you can handle the odd bedtime look, I love satin sleep hats. it's sort of like being in a pineapple without the scrunchie.

Ah, thanks. :flower:
I never tried it, but I kind of refrain from it, it reminds me of these women who look like they get tired from looking pretty so they put their hair up in a very high messy bun thing, right on top of their head, and walk the streets like that. I mean, what the heck?
The sleeping cap looks like a good suggestion though. I thought of taking a satin pillowcase and pinning it above my pillow, to make this silky pocket to put my hair in it.

I have seen someone do that. I had to do a double take when I saw it

I don't have curly hair, per se, but I have very, very wavy hair. When I want to enhance my wave/curls, I'll put my hair up in a messy scrunchy bun.

I pull my hair up, like I'm going to make a very high ponytail (without using a brush or comb, just pull it up). Then I use a scrunchy and start to make the pony. I do not pull the last bit of length through the tie. It makes a big hairy mess on top of my head. In the morning, I take it out and fluff my hair a bit and that's it.

I hope that helps.

I've never had any luck with pineappling(?). Surprisingly, I have been having consistent success with the pillow-plop (thanks, Presto :flower:). I thought it would totally muss and flatten my curls by just having my hair swept up and over the pillow when I sleep, but it did work for me. I think I might have to look into those sleep caps, especially when my hair gets longer.

So sorry about not explaining the pineapple term in the first place!

I did do the pineapple thing last night and it hurt my scalp on the sides but it did help my curls to stay the way they were a LOT. I'll have to find something else though. I was afraid of the scalp soreness thing from putting my hair up like that.

If you haven't, you could try taking a hair stick, inserting at places where you feel a pull, and loosening the tension by wiggling the hair stick around, moving it outward from scalp slightly.

Oh, I tried that once without even knowing what it was called! It hurt my head and didn't seem to make any difference to my hair. :|
I think I need to invest in a sleep cap.

I am trying to find a sleeping cap that looks exactly like the one in the picture , with no luck :(. Does anyone have any suggestions about where I can buy one on-line ?

I have a sleep cap just like RCC's (thanks to her rec!) and I love it. I have a shorter one, since my hair isn't very long yet. I think it works much better than a pineapple, since pineappling always flattens my curls in the back and gives me a weird dent in the front, no matter how loosely I tie it (generally people recommend using a scrunchie, since it's the least likely hair item to put a dent in your curls, but even that doesn't work so well for me).

Sometimes I'll use a couple of claw clips to twist my curls in the back, sort of into a peacock twist with less twist, if that makes sense. That preserves my curls pretty well and I don't get the weird scrunchie dent. Combine that with a satin sleep cap and you're golden - I've had 3rd day curls doing that.

I get my best curl by putting my damp hair over the top of the pillow to "puddle" in the space above my pillow - is that "pillow plopping"?. I also have to wedge a pillow between the bedframe and the mattress to be sure my hair doesn't slide over the top and hang toward the floor.

I'm a wavyhead and have been trying to figure out a sleeping arrangement, too. Buns fall out, braids make my ends and length look crappy, so for the past couple of nights I've resorted to pineappling. It's both comfy and helps retain some of the curl.

I find that it can pull on your hair if you put it TOO high on your head. But if I place it so it lies on the pillow just right when I put my head down, it's much more comfortable. I toss it over the pillow, but it's still pretty short so it moves around as I shift during the night. I'm using some kind of a soft hair elastic, but a scrunchie should be better.
