Back in the day the ladies would save the loose hair until they had enough to make a hair piece or make jewelry out of it. Does anybody here do that? Good way to recycle!

Haha, yep. Only not necessarily for that purpose. I'll dig up the thread for you, hold on.

ETA: As promised (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=23616&highlight=make+ponytail).

No - shed hair has an "ick" factor for me.

Here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=23616) was one of the recent threads about saving shed hair. I personally don't save my shed hair as I have no use for it. I roll it up into a ball and toss it out.

 jewelry? What kind of jewelry would you make out of shed hair?

Well, there's a member on another long hair forum that has a cross made of hers and her mother's hair. I didn't ask if it was shed hair or cut hair, but either one would work. It's actually really pretty, in the picture it sort of looks like delicately carved, shiny wood. I'd imagine you could make other shapes and things out of it. I read in a hundred-year-old book about a girl having a lock of her hair made into a bracelet with a gold clasp.

It does sound kinda gross when all you see these days are wadded up balls of hair in your shower drain, sink, and coming from your hair brush. :p But if you just have a neatly organized strand you're saving, it doesn't seem so gross. To me, anyway. I'd never tell an acquaintance in real life about it, though my roommates know.

This is the silliest reaction to hair ever.

I bet that bracelet is extremely durable too.

Interesting...that cross sounds really pretty. The only thing I would do with shed hair if I thought about keeping it would be to make a braided ponytail cover or something.

If you google about it you can find all kinds of jewelry that the Victorians made from their hair using beads, ribbons, etc. I know in Jane Austen times you gave a lock of your hair to your lover who would wear it in a ring or a locket. I saw some really beautiful jewelry made from hair.

Yeah, I'm not so ambitious with my saved hair. I'm probably just going to use it for strand testing at some point, whenever/if ever I decide to henna or something.

I think I will start saving mine! There is a picture of a cross and necklace made from hair: gorgeous!

I stuff the shed hair in to a Kleenex box and I plan to stuff a wool appliqued pin cushion with it someday.

I remember someone posting a picture of a braid from shed hair, that looked cool. But I'm too darn lazy to save it all.

I never have saved my hair before, but I think I might start doing it now just to see how much I get and what I can do with it. :)

If you save it and put it in a stocking you can make a hair bump like the 'bumpits'. If your into thoes kinda 'dos.

No. I have no place to keep it, what with all the other stuff life seems to require.

ETA: Oh, also, I think saving my shed hair would just make me sad that it wasn't on my head anymore.

I might consider starting to keep an envelope for it and mail it to Matter of Trust, but I might also turn out to be too lazy.

I originally found LHL (before the split and we became LHC) because I was interested in Mourning Jewelry and Mourning Art. One day I'd like to attempt making a bracelet, but I'd have to do a LOT of research first!

And no. I do not save my shed hairs. My mother saved my hair from my first haircut (when I was 5) and I kept my itty bitty pony from when I went from fingertip length to BSL-ish a few years ago. Mom also has her mother's hair when she (Gma) cut her hair in the early 1920s. It and the hair from my first cut are very similar in color and texture.

My mom told me that pin cushions made out of hair are really good because they keep the pins nicely polished and smooth. I've been meaning to make one for years but couldn't figure out how to keep the hair together nicely while saving it. A Kleenex box is an excellent idea :)
